Being a follower of Manchester United
(I don't like to say supporter because I'm not linked with
Manchester United in any way, I just like there style of
football) for around the past 13 years, the idea of a Red
Devils super patch was definitely worth a peak. Once the
patch was downloaded, I installed it using Sweetpatch MRA
and it went on hassle free. Once the patch was installed
I loaded up Fifa and was welcomed to a nice splash screen
of the Manchester United players, the Manchester United
FA Cup Anthem for their 1995/96 season and a neat little
mouse pointer in the shape of a Red Devil.

First thing I did was have a look at the
Manchester United Squad. They said that the patch changed
some of the player ratings. I wrote down the overall ratings
of the first team before I applied the patch and compared
them with the ratings after the patch was installed...none
of the players in the first team have been changed, as far
as I could tell. I personally think that making a super
patch for a single team is one thing, but making the ratings
biased in the teams favour is more like a cheat. I think
the designers of the patch made a good decision in keeping
the player ratings as they are, or if they changed anything
it was minor enough for me not to notice.
One
aspect of this patch I was looking forward to see was Old
Trafford. I was very impressed with the overall result.
I thought the stadium was a spot on likeness of the real
thing. If only they could get the players to walk out from
the corner of the pitch like the real thing instead of the
centre. The turf on the Old Trafford pitch is another feature
they included...this is again done well and adds to the
whole authenticity of the stadium.
I been keeping one eye out for the Manchester
United 3rd kit, and I didn't expect the super patch to leave
it out. The kits have been done well and they even give
you a choice of the 3rd kit or the white away kit. This
is done outside the game. The goalkeeper kit is a nice feature
and done well, the goalkeeper gloves show good attention
to detail.
This
patch also adds the Sky Sports TV logo to the game. This
looks good and better than the original display, but when
a team has a long name i.e. Ipswich Town, it covers up the
score with the end of the team name, and personally I think
it looks messy. Other than that the Sky Sports patch looks
very impressive and would be a must have if it wasn't for
that minor problem. At the time of this review it is still
in beta form, so I assume the final version will be perfected
and minor problems like that ironed out.
I've only reflected on the good points
above, and where there's a good, there's always a bad to
counteract it. I think this patch needs a little more work
done to it, just a little touching up for it to be a complete
patch. The Manchester United background goes back to the
original background after the options have been looked at,
not a major problem and no doubt easily fixed. The bi-mode
boots don't seem to work that well, one minute Andy Coles
wearing Adidas predators which I had on there before I installed
the patch, then he's wearing Silver Nike boots. Not very
noticeable but anyone with an eye for detail will pick up
on it.
As
much as I love the Old Trafford stadium, it sadly replaces
Wembley...but that's not the problem, when in tower cam,
a supporting beam blocks the view when play is happening
on the near touchline. Get that little bug fixed and there
wont be any faults with Old Trafford. Another fault I came
across is the Manchester United Goalkeeper kit appears on
other keepers aswell, for instance I was playing with Valencia
and there keeper had the Vodaphone sponsor written across
his shirt. An educated guess would be that the goalkeeper
kit files are common to other teams.
For those of you who use Sweetpatch MRA,
this patch is fully compliant and can be added and removed
in a matter of seconds. It does not add the 3rd kit or goalkeeper
kit. To do this a separate file needs to be downloaded and
a batch file will do the rest.
Overall I think the patch is really for
hardcore Manchester United Fans. It needs a little work
done on it to fix the problems I mentioned and then it will
be the complete Manchester United Super Patch. I do like
Manchester United but not enough to have this patch on all
the time. Old Trafford is an add-on I've been after for
a long time, but I will get this in the Extreme World Update
that's in production. I've kept the kits on there because
I like the 3rd kit over the original white kit. If you hate
Manchester United then don't even think about this patch,
if you follower United or are even a neutral, then its well
worth a look and for the die hard United fan its a must
have.
