UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PS2 Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PS2 Review IGN have reviewed the PS2/PSP versions of the game and quote:

"UEFA is an interesting and worthwhile addition to EA's growing library of soccer titles, thanks to its interesting mix of unique modes, its quick-moving, fast-paced game, and its fun feel and solid controls. The PSP connectivity adds another layer of depth, as you can port your season back and forth between systems. You might find better FIFA games on the market, but for a last-gen effort UEFA retains that feeling of fun and playability that is actually a little better than its Xbox 360 brethren."

Rating (out of 10) Description
8.5
Presentation
Not as stunning as its 360 brethren, but still good solid EA presentation, with quick menus, great video and good load times.
7.5
Graphics
One can ignore the blocky players and low-res textures because the animation is good and the motion capture is excellent.
7.5
Sound
Great announcing, decent crowds, and some enjoyable music for a change.
8.0
Gameplay
Fast-paced, enjoyable and right to the point. Some good modes in there, and, of course, everything is officially licensed.
7.5
Lasting Appeal
The Treble is a solid addition and so is ultimate Challenge, plus, the PSP connectivity means it all good for the road.
7.9
Good

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Card Trading Issue Explained

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Card Trading Issue ExplainedEA have released their latest position with some problems regarding online card trading at the moment and they have followed this up with the studio.

The issue comes from the test data (which was used before the game being released) having been deleted and the sysem which tracks trades being reset later than originally intended - after the game launched.

The upshot of this is that trading is incorrectly tracking initially for some users. And while this is frustrating will only be an issue for this first week, after which the trades which did not work correctly will have timed out in the system, restoring any cards which may have gone missing and restoring trade slots you may have lot in the meantime.

They apologise for the delays to those suffering this problem, but their current understanding is that by the end of the week this will no longer be a problem.

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Another Xbox 360 Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Another Xbox 360 ReviewTeam Xbox have reviewed the 360 version of the game and quote:

"The refinements made in the EA Sports soccer engine (this independent player/ball physics engine is the wave of the future weather you like it or not) allow UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 to play like FIFA 07 should have for the Xbox 360, and it’s good to know that EA cares about such things. They could have merely slapped UEFA licensing on the same exact engine and many gamers would have been none the wiser. Add the gameplay tweaks to a new mode that makes a strong case for the combination of card and sports games, and the result is a surprising effort from EA’s Canadian development house.

There are still some improvements to be made (the graphics and audio could be better, and the A.I. is still frustrating), and we still want those online leagues like FIFA 07 for the Xbox, but it’s hard to complain about having a strong soccer offering like UEFA Champions League 2006-2007. A soccer effort that just may give us all a glimpse of just how good FIFA 08 could be. "

Rating (out of 10) Description
8.5
Gameplay
A lovely game engine featuring independent player and ball physics. Card game campaign mode jazzes up offline play.
8.0
Graphics
The player models are still a bit synthetic, but the overall look of the game in motion is more refined than EA’s 2006 offerings.
7.5
Audio
The soundtrack isn’t quite as good as FIFA 07, and the commentator call doesn’t sync as well with the on-pitch action.
8.5
Longevity
Eight player online action – oh yeah! One could get lost in the Ultimate Team mode.
9.0
Innovation
Soccer gaming seems to be EA’s main refuge for innovation these days.
8.3

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PC Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PC Review23rd of March is the official release date of EA's newest soccer game, UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 and today we provide you with an independent review of the PC version of the game.

Feeling
The game isn't really different in this area as many might have guessed. EA are sticking to the new FIFA 07 engine and that's it. There are some new animations for the players, such as new header animations and keeper reactions. The game itself is pretty much the same as FIFA 07 but flows a little better with passes and movements.

AI
The AI has in our opinion been improved and holds a little better standard than in FIFA 07. The opponents try harder to get the ball, they don't panic as fast as they get the ball near their own goal as they do in FIFA 07. Their accuracy has been improved so the old days when the AI would shoot the ball over the lines are (almost) over. The keeper has also been improved to act more rationally in certain situations, example: you are approaching the keeper for a 1 on 1. In FIFA 07 the keeper would wait for you to come very close and then start to come out of the goal, but in this game he'll already be waiting for you far out of the goal.

Player Likeness
There's not much to say here, the faces of the players are unfortunately exactly the same as in FIFA 07.

Features

  • The Treble: As manager of your club you have just one season to complete the ultimate football accomplishment - the treble! With every mission comes a new challenge as you play through a season filled with league matches, cup ties and much more!
  • Ultimate Challenge: A series of challenges that recreate the many memorable moments in CL history. Your mission is to play them out as they did in real life, and the points you get can be spent in the Store.
  • UEFA Champions League Tournament: Play this years official CL tournament with the best teams from the best leagues, or your imagination and mix up the groups as you want.
  • UEFA History Book: Keep track of all your accomplishments in the challenges here.
  • Training Mode: Train your skills so that everyone that faces you doesn't stand a chance.

Improvements
There are some nice improvements to the game that are worth mentioning. The animations have been slightly improved, the game is also slightly smoother, the AI is also improved. There is a new feature in the game that we call "quickies" that are good in some situations, for example: The ball goes out for a throw in, and then a small text appears – "press 5 for quick throw in" – when you press 5 (or whatever you have assigned) then the annoying throw in cutscene skips and you´re ready to throw the ball directly. Also when you play at nighttime, you'll notice all the beautiful lights that light up the pitch from the stadium "walls" or roofs. The game is also supposed to feature snow, although we haven't seen that yet.

Unlockables
There aren't many unlockables, but the ones featured are really nice and entertaining, there are some cool footballs, for example one smiley ball, and ball with the globe painted on it. There are also two locked stadiums, Highbury and the absolutely beautiful Ultimate UEFA stadium, which looks magnificent. And the final unlockables are some cool turf modifications.

So what do you think now?

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Xbox 360 Review

IGN have reviewed the Xbox 360 version of the game and conclude that "The greatest club football tournament in the world comes to 360, but all the skill, finesse and excitement gets lost in translation".

Rating
(out of 10)
Description
8.5
Presentation
Slick and very polished, it’s every bit the authentic product you’d expect it to be, with all the correct teams and players, plus cool new game modes.
8.0
Graphics
Still the best looking next-gen football game around, with great TV-style replays and superb animation. Players still look a bit plasticky though.
8.5
Sound
Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend provide the best commentary in any football game, plus the crowd chants and in-game effects match the action perfectly.
5.0
Gameplay
Slow, unresponsive and stupid, and that’s just your team mates. Tackling is too difficult and scoring is too easy, with everything in between a forgettable mess.
7.0
Lasting Appeal
There’s plenty of options, with the 42-game Challenge mode and online play a highlight, if you can stomach the painfully slow gameplay.
6.0
Passable

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Interview with EA Producer Matt Holme

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Interview with EA Producer Matt HolmeOur great friend and soccer gaming hero, Matt Holme (now an EA Producer) breaks down the upcoming club soccer title on the PC over with IGN.

Check out below some of the questions IGN asked Matt and then check out the full interview:

  • IGN: First off, how many teams will there be in the game?
  • Matt Holme: We have 268 teams from 17 leagues. We've ensured that every major team from all of the major European leagues is present in the game. In addition the game boasts 49 stadiums from around the world.
  • IGN: It sounds like you get to play through normal league matches as well as the Champions League schedule. What are the challenges of being a Champions League team and having to play in your own league?
  • Holme: You certainly do get to play through League and Cup matches as well. We realize that one of the biggest challenges for a Manager or player in a season is being able to cope through a campaign that not only involves a Champions League schedule, but the day to day responsibilities of a Domestic League and Cup season. We wanted to ensure we gave the user more than what they expected. So by adding the Cup and League matches along with the Champions League schedule, the game is going to be offering a lot more than just the standard package you may have come to expect from a licensed sports title. Of course though, if you're just a Champions League enthusiast and don't want to bother with League and Cup matches, the complete Champions League campaign can be played from the Group Stages onwards in our Tournament mode.
  • IGN: Quick controls? We don't even know what that means. Explain!
  • Holme: Glad you asked about these, because for me the first thing I look for in any new football video game is something innovating and new in regards to gameplay. We've definitely delivered this with Quick Controls. Quick Controls adds a fundamental of football which has been sadly missing from football games for a long time. They give you the ability to be able to take advantage of attacking movements and catch your opponent off-guard by taking a quick free-kick, quick throw-in, quick goal-kick or quick corner at the press of a button. Every time play stops, if you want to speed up the action and not sit through the highlights and cut scenes, just hit L1 and you'll be thrown straight back into position and ready to play on. This really does speed up the overall gameplay experience, and like I said, give you the ability to carry out something that has been common in football since its very beginning, but never before fully implemented in a football game.
  • IGN: What upgrades to gameplay have you focused on since FIFA 07?
  • Holme: We've really focused on capturing the true pace and intensity that can be found in a real-life Champions League match. Naturally, when the world's best players and teams are involved and the stakes are so high, the intensity and overall speed of a match is going to go up a gear. This is exactly what the UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 gameplay engine simulates.

This interview will give you an understanding of what to expect in UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 for the PS2, PSP and PC. Click here to read this great interview.

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Xbox 360 Hands-on

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Xbox 360 Hands-onIGN bring us one of the first previews on the Net for UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 for the Xbox 360.

To summarise their preview:

  • UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 is hands down the most gorgeous soccer game to date and it's not even finished yet.
  • While the game runs on a modified version of the FIFA 07 engine, which was disappointing, to say the least, UEFA is making modest improvements over its predecessor.
  • The team that handled the impressive 2006 FIFA World Cup is at the helm this go around and we've already seen some of its influence. For instance:
    • The passing game has been improved -- or is it corrected? -- so that you can now hold down the short pass button and hit a teammate a longer distance and the through pass has been tweaked as well.
    • In the air, it's much improved and it's a bit easier to lead strikers into space.
    • On the ground, the lead pass still needs works as you can't bypass one teammate and hit the next one by holding down the Y button, which would be particularly useful in scoring situations.
    • Off the pitch, the team also implemented a challenge mode similar to World Cup.
  • Back to the graphics:
    • The frame-rate and the animations are excellent in UEFA -- no more dropped frames like in FIFA.
    • With a revamped lighting system and adjusted cameras, some of the smooth animations look almost photorealistic.
    • The player models and faces looked great in gameplay, but they still retain that sort of plastic look in cutscenes.
