Mendieta Serie A nightmare

Spanish newspaper Marca has reported that Spanish international midfielder, Gaizka Mendieta, is poised to join Athletic Bilbao in a loan deal from Lazio.

Mendieta

The negotiations between the Basque club and Lazio are believed to be at an advanced stage and the deal is likely to be concluded before the Spanish transfer deadline expires on Thursday.

Mendieta's agent Gines Carvajal refused to confirm that a deal with Bilbao was imminent, but did say that the player was considering his immediate future at the Italian club: "He is keeping calm at the moment, but he is not happy about his situation and is hoping that things can be resolved before January 31, He wants to go to the World Cup - to do that he needs to play and the more he plays the greater his chances."

As we all recall, Mendieta, who was the most expensive player in Spanish history when he joined SS Lazio from Valencia for $41million in the close season, has failed to hold down a first team place at the Serie A club.

Mendieta, 27, has been singled out by fans for heavy criticism in the wake of the side's poor start to the season as they lie seventh in the table and were eliminated from the Champions League and UEFA Cup.

Born in Bilbao, Mendieta has played for the Basque Country's regional selection and would be eligible to play for Athletic, who have a strong policy of only signing players with Basque origins.

Belgian Fifa Patch 2002

We have some great news from the Belgian/Dutch site (and our partners) SoccergameZ.

After the success of the Belgian Fifa Patch (BFP) 2000 (for Fifa 2000), the BFP 2001 and 2001-2002 (for Fifa 2001) and recently the Dutch Fifa Patch and the Retropatch 97-98 they are now proud to announce the Belgian Fifa Patch 2002.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image Click for larger image

This will be biggest Belgian Fifa 2002 update ever. It will bring the total atmosphere of the Belgian league in Fifa 2002, including use of the great tool FifaFX which allows them to give every (every!) team its own fan crowds (e.g.: Gent fans now sing "lololo say Buffalo" during the game), every team its own Goalkeeper kit, its own ball, its own adboards and every team its own music by goals and while the teams enter the field (e.g. by Lierse or Genk teams you'll hear "Eye of the tiger" when the teams enter the field, and by Standard Liege you'll hear "Hey baby" when Standard scores). This will give the gamer the feeling of being in the stadium during the game.

The patch will be released in a few weeks so in the meantime check out the full features in the Patches Database. Also, the lads totally redesigned the site of the Belgian Fifa Patch for this occasion - check it out now.

Shearer - still an option

England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, has admitted that Alan Shearer may yet be part of his World Cup plans.

The former England skipper retired from international after Euro 2000, but has recently refused to rule out a comeback.

Shearer

Shearer has scored 13 times for Newcastle so far this season and speaking ahead of the draw for Euro 2004 in Portugal, Eriksson admitted that he may yet pull on an England shirt again.

Eriksson said: "I have never talked to Alan Shearer, because when I came in he had already taken that decision to say no thanks to the national team.

"But we'll see in the months to come. There are many good strikers around, but I have never ruled Alan Shearer out. I don't know whether he will want to come back, but maybe...

Title race still on for Chelsea

Claudio Ranieri insisted Chelsea are still in the Premiership title race after they routed West Ham 5-1 at Stamford Bridge. Ranieri's side tore 10-man West Ham apart and moved up to eight points off the top of the table.

Chelsea 5 v 1 West Ham

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen both struck two goals in the 5-1 dismissal of the Hammers.

Ranieri said: "The big group of clubs were getting away, so it was very important to win today. Now we are near the group."

Hammers goalkeeper David James pulled off half-a-dozen great saves to prevent the Blues running up a cricket score - but he could not prevent Hasselbaink rifling home in the 45th and 60th minutes, either side of a superb finish by his strike partner Gudjohnsen.

Just when the 3,000 West Ham fans thought their afternoon could not get any worse, Paolo di Canio stamped on Jody Morris and was shown the red card by referee Andy D'Urso.

In a frantic finale, with three goals in as many minutes, Gudjohnsen first produced a cool finish for his second in the 86th minute.

Just 60 seconds later, Jermain Defoe hit a fine consolation goal - and in the 89th minute Mikael Forssell sidefooted home his side's fifth from 14 yards.

Ranieri added: "Without Jimmy, we scored four (against Norwich) - so he was afraid because he thought he might not play. But I would never have left him out.

"It was a very good match because both teams played to win. In the first half there was a lot of touch-and-move - but we wanted to win and scored at the right moment. In the second half it was even better for us.

"Maybe we now have the psychological advantage for the FA Cup game also against West Ham, on Saturday - but I prefer the advantage on the pitch. Every game has its own story."

Great new Cinematics

I have been chatting in the past few days with Ariel and Xavier from our Latin American partners Soccer Access regarding their great new Cinematics. Ariel even provided me with this great new image last night of the teams standing in a straight line.

The demo of their cinematics will be available soon and includes 4 totally new cinematics, with the latest feature in the cinematic editing: the zoom in and zoom out feature. Ariel has managed to control the camera angles, height, zoom and position. Therefore, you will be able to see amazing camera views from the "helicopter cam". Apart from that, all the cinematics have a different intro tune that the ones from the original cinematics and you won't loose your Fifa 2002 cinematics.

Forlan to Premier League

Diego Forlan has revealed that he rejected a move to Middlesbrough because of the money on offer from Manchester United.

Forlan

The Uruguayan striker will complete a £6.9m move from Argentine Independiente by signing a 4 and-a-half year contract at Old Trafford, although it may not be until Monday.

Forlan flew into England on Friday and was expected to sign for Boro - but the English champions revived their interest to pull the signing.

"The offer was bigger for the club, for Independiente, and for me," said Forlan "I was going to go to Middlesbrough, but Manchester offered more."

The 24-year-old will have a medical on Saturday and is already looking forward to lining up alongside players he has only seen on television.

"They're all big players, and I know them because I've seen them playing on TV in the league and in the cups," he said "I hope I can get into the team, but first of all I have to sign. Then we can talk about that."

Manchester’s manager, Alex Ferguson, confirmed on the club's official website: "It's been a confusing deal really, but he's flying to Manchester this afternoon and we hope to put the deal to bed by this evening."

Forlan will be able to play in the Champions League second phase when it resumes in February.

Great new site - Created Soccer

Callan Woolcock has created a new site called Created Soccer. It is a Fifa site with a difference.

Click for larger image

Here is how the site works:

  • You can create players from FIFA 2002, or just create them on the site, and submit them in and they put them in a league and then you can get updates with news and see how your player is going. They keep the goal scorers, card counts, injuries and all the other match stats up dated on the site regularly.
  • You can upload their replays and they will host a goal of the week, and they will also have a player of the week (for the created player that plays the best in the league).
  • They will also have a replay database, and in it they will store all the goals, fouls and most of the other stats of the games.

We know you will enjoy watching the progress of the players, but Callan needs your support to start it off. Take a trip over to Created Soccer and join in the fun.

Parma's new striker

Sreie A club Parma tied up a deal for Inter Milan's Turkish international striker Hakan Sukur, the selling club announced.

Inter Sells, Parma Buying

Sukur, who “froze” out at the San Siro since Argentinian manager Hector Cuper arrived at the club, completed the deal with Parma.

The 30-years-old, Hakan Sukur, was one of the most prolific strikers in Europe when he played for Istanbul outfit Galatasaray but has yet to really make an impact in Italy after a previous unsuccessful stint with Torino.

The Turkish international will face a stiff competition for a place at Parma’s starting line-up from Italian international Marco Di Vaio and Emiliano Bonazzoli.

But he was way down the pecking order at Inter where Ronaldo, Christian Vieri, Mohamed Kallon, Alvaro Recoba, Nicola Ventola and Brazilian Adriano were all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Roberto Ayala to United

Manchester United have made a £10.5m bid for Valencia central defender Roberto Ayala, according to reports in Spain.

Ayala

The Argentinian was a key part of Valencia's run to last year's Champions League final, and Spanish sports newspaper Marca claims the club are unlikely to let him go.

Ayala, who is 28 years old, joined Valencia from AC Milan for just £2.2m in the summer of 2000 after agreeing to forego his percentage of the transfer.

The Argentinian is said to have a buy-out clause of £37m, but his agent is reportedly keen to renegotiate the player's contract.

  • The players are from the 2001 Brazilian Championship with the actual formations

Carew to Premiership

Fulham are close to completing the signing of Norwegian striker John Carew after confirming they have been in negotiations with his club Valencia.

John Carew

The Cottagers are believed to have agreed a fee of around £7.5m for the giant Carew after initially remaining tight-lipped at claims from Valencia that a £9m deal had been struck.

Carew's signing should be completed subject to a successful medical.

Fulham manager Jean Tigana moved quickly to target the 22-year-old who has fallen out of favour with new Valencia coach Rafael Benitez.

Di Canio turn red

West Ham’s Paolo Di Canio is holding talks with Manchester United about a possible move to the Premiership champions.

Paolo Di Canio Turn Red

Newspaper reports claims that the West Ham striker would move north in a £3.5million move in the weekend, but United officials refused to comment on what they termed 'transfer speculation."

the Italian, who missed the 3-0 New Year's Day defeat at Leeds through injury, is said to have told the Hammers he wants to leave after being informed of United's interest and is negotiating a move, although no deal has been finalised.

West Ham press spokesman insisted the club had 'received no offers for Di Canio from Manchester United or anyone else and continues to be a West Ham player'.

Sad news

As possibly you heard in the TV News, Argentina the country where I was born is in the middle of an economical and political crisis. By taking in count these events there have been some happenings in the Soccer Access, Fifala and FifaExpress team. I would like not only to show you some of the latest happenings from their site but also, to show you that due to the recent crisis of Argentina Ariel Santarelli, a well know editor and patchmaker has officially left the FIFA community, but I just think that the better is that you read this that was posted on their site:

"In behalf of the Soccer Access, Fifala and FifaExpress team, I will like to thank Ariel Santarelli for the time that he worked here. Unfortunately, due to the economic and politic crisis in Argentina, Ariel will be very busy in the upcoming weeks with his medicine jobs. Therefore, he won't have as many time as he did in the past to edit kits, discover new ways of editing and provide us with top quality downloads. This is not the first time that Ariel has left the site, and believe me, he usually returns when he has more spare time for us

So now, I guess the main question are:

  • What will happen to SA now?
  • Who will make patches now?
  • What about the 3GK kits?
  • And the cinematics??

We at SA would like to continue with this webpage and with my new team mate Gabriel Seri, we are totally commited to make SA a more popular site. Perhaps, in a few weeks the situation will get better. I would like to thank all the people who support us and put links to our site. Your help is very much appreciated and if SA will improve Ariel's return will speed up a lot, believe me. I won't talk about the problems now, because I think that Ariel was a great persona in the FIFA scene and should be rememebered for all his two and a half years that he has helped me with my sites.

Last and not least, this is not the first time that Ariel has left the scene. I remember once when he had to leave Fifala because of his busy medicine classes. However, as soon as Ariel will find some spare time to return to the scene I'll let you know.

Finally, the Soccer Access cinematics won't have 40 new animation's as we wanted to. However, the patch WILL BE RELEASED IN A MATTER OF DAYS. Be sure to come over to check the release date of this amazing patch. About the 3GK kits, they are not ready yet and there is still a lot of work to be done there (tpages issues). About the World Cup patch, we will release it soon, and Ariel's work will be there plus some excellent kits from Jin Man Bae, Israel Huertas and Gabriel Seri.".

So we the members of the Sweetpatch team, wish Soccer Access team the best of the lucks and please keep your work coming. Cheers:-)

Premier League news

Fresh transfer from Manchester United, striker Andy Cole, will go straight into the Blackburn Rovers side for their game against Tottenham.

Rovers boss Graeme Souness will start with Cole in an attempt to bolster a forward line that has not scored for two games.

Right defender, Lauren, is back for Premiership leaders, Arsenal, as they travel to Leicester, who are sweating on the fitness of Robbie Savage after he was subbed in the stormy draw with Bolton.

Leeds are still without a host of first-teamers as they entertain West Ham, while Paolo di Canio is back from suspension for the Londoners.
