PS2 Premiership & Division 1 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

Premiership News

Today Juventus were the visitors to Old Trafford who have now returned from their lengthy vacation and eager to start winning matches. Juventus started strongly, Nedved hitting the upright with an early free kick but they were stunned to see Man Utd  go 2-0 up with goals from Scholes and Van Nistleroy early in the First Half.

Juventus replied and managed to score quickly, making their job a lot easier - converting their chances better than United and took a well deserved lead on the 66th with Del Piero. Man Utd had a definite penalty appeal turned down in the dying minutes but Juventus hung on to take all 3pts here to keep Second Spot in the Table.

Division One News

Spurs took on Celtic in this Division One Clash and it turned out to be a very exciting game. Celtic were awarded a Penalty early on in the 1st Half but Keller amazingly kept it out and this proved to be the turning point.

Spurs took the lead when Keane robbed the Celtic defence and made no mistake to put the Lilly Whites 1-0 up. Celtic replied with a cracking equaliser to tie things up at 1-1 and this is how the match finished with both teams sharing the spoils in a very entertaining match.

SFTLA PC League Kicks Off!

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC LeagueThe long awaited SFTLA PC League that consists of 40 Players and 4 Divisions, making it one of the biggest Online Leagues in the World to date has finally Kicked Off !

The Players Patch for SFTLA PC Leagues that had been worked on tirelessly was also introduced to the players. It consisted of all teams Rated the same from they Mighty Giants of Real Madrid down to the Minnows of Barnet City FC so there is no disadvantage and every one is on an equal playing field.

The Players Patch also included some extra goodies to make this Patch a very sought after commodity, with things like

  • SFTLA Ball
  • Realistic Nets
  • Sweetpatch FTL Arena Stadium
  • Sponsors Advertising Boards (Sky One Gamezville, EA Sports, Punters Lounge, FreeMoney)
  • SFTLA Menu Logo's
  • Personalised Team Formation Setups Submitted by Players

Let us take a look at all the Action that took place in Week One

SFTLA Premiership

What an exciting and explosive  First Week we had, with Two Dutch Teams in the Premiership and there managers closely matched on form,  Jpm of Ajax and Kev of  Feyenord, was a battle of Holland alright and was pinched at the death by Feyenord in the 90th min too claim the 2-1 Victory. Feyenord Manager Kevin who got promoted from the old FTL 1st div last Season has definitely got One over on one of his top rivals.

Arsenal and Manager Si who are new too the League and a bit of a unknown really as he only joined at the very end of last season has shown signs of being a Dark Horse in the opening Week of the Premiership by beating old FTL Division 2 Champions Woody and his Man Utd  Team by a convincing 3-1 Victory.

Santos - Patrick, who is another new boy who done well in the Pre-Season Tournament too claim his Premiership place by reaching the Final came up against FTL -  Treble Winner of Last Season - Kotp of Spurs and the old Fifa Veteran showed the new boy how tough its going to  be by spanking him 5-0 and showed he still means business at the Fifa Office!

Another team who got blitzed by goals was PSV - Hez, who Last Season got most improved player in Fifa 2003 but, has obviously not got too grips with Fifa 2004 yet as Real Madrid hammered 6 past them. By all reports the connection wasn't good and too be honest is a constant issue we are having to deal with without the luxury of us being able to use Kali like Last Season, but like the PSV Manager said Credit where Credit Due regardless of the connection they were never going to win this game and Real Madrid deserved it totally....

SFTLA Division One

Celtic - Mad Jock 4th in Last Seasons FTL Division 1, kicked off his campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over his old rivals Snake - Bayern Munich , who themselves came 3rd Last Season in the same Division. Blackbrun - Colin also done the same with a 4-0 win over Deportivo too keep the pressure up on the Scots, but Valencia - Culver, didn't want too miss out on all the scoring fun and put 3 past Walsall....these 3 teams, Celtic . Blackbrun and Valencia are definitely the Division 1 Favourites too claim promotion and are the teams too watch out for. Liverpool - Nidge, had a very tough opening game with Juventus but eventually got the break through they deserved too claim a 1-0 victory over his rival Kiz.

SFTLA Division Two

Only one game has been played so far and that was between two new boys that have joined the SFTLA Leagues. Roma - Andy, took a nice home win over Stoke - Bolly, 2-1 and leads the way in Division 2 at this early stage.

SFTLA Division Three

The Witts Family well and truly represent the 3rd Division with  Dad and 2 lads,  Dave Witts (Sweetpatch) and his two younger lads Jay & Dan. Dave and his Plymouth team were hosts to Real Betis - Ian, but came a cropper too the silky skills of the Spanish team losing 4-1. Younger Witts Dan on the other hand done the family proud with a 1-0 victory over Ipswich - Peck and showed his Dad how it should be done. (well done Dan lad)

Parma - Leon are classed as the 3rd Division Favourites and lived up to that bill by an impressive 3-0 win over Real Sociedad - Matt.

SFTLA Pink Echo

Also this week the pc league have presented a paper called the " Pink Echo " where you can read all the match news and reports....whispers and gossip of the SFTLA.

The name behind 'The Pink Echo' comes from the Merseyside & Cheshire Football Echo ('Footy Echo'). It gets printed on pink paper, and is therefore referred to as 'The Pink Echo' you can catch up with all the weeks action and anything else happening on the site in this great source of information.

SFTLA PS2 Premiership Update Week 8

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueWell what a game this one was, Real Madrid were expected to win here today and a penalty cost Inter Milan a vital 3 points. Real Madrid went 1-0 up after 10mins when Raul split open the Inter Milan defence. Then just 7mins later Real Madrid added another goal to there lead thanks to figo. Inter Milan must of thought they was in for a heavy score line defeat after conceding 2 goals in under 20 minutes played, but Inter Milan dug deep for the rest of the half and went in at half time 2-0 down.

The 2nd half was a lot different both teams made tactical changes and the game was full of both teams cancelling each other out until Real Madrid were awarded a penalty with Zanneti the guilty player for Inter Milan bringing down ronaldo in the 72nd minute. Ronaldo stepped up and cool as you like slotted home the 3rd although the Inter Milan keeper guessed right and was very close to saving it, surely now real Madrid had bagged up the 3 points.

Inter Milan then showed why they will probably be a Team that survives relegation by battling on with everything they had, this continued arrogant attitude paid off and  Recobba smashed one in on 83minutes. Then to everyone's surprise Inter Milan scored a 2nd with Zanetti making up for his earlier clumsy tackle by Scoring the goal of the match to shock the home crowd.

Real Madrid now knew they couldn't slip up with only seconds left they brought the ball forward but Inter Milan had the got the ball back and took it far into the Real Madrid half. The defence began to panic and gave away a free-kick in a very dangerous area. Veiri placed the ball as the Home Crowd held their breath but much to their relief and the Real Madrid Manager the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar.

It was a remarkable comeback attempt by Inter Milan but unfortunately they started to play the soccer they know they can far too late and Real Madrid secured the 3pts and continue to look good for the Premiership Title. Inter Milan will go away knowing they should of got more out of this game and will surely be a Team to watch in the coming weeks as they will certainly be hungry for victory.

France v United Kingdom Update

France v United Kingdom

The first couple of International Matches have taken place and at the moment the score is France 6 v 2 United Kingdom. First for the UK to play was Deadcell and he was brutally murdered in the Away Leg 8-1 , he done much better on the Home Leg losing 5-3. I caught up with him after the match to see how it all went and he wasn't at all happy , the French Player disconnected an Amazing 15 times because his Connection was so bad , so Deadcell can count himself very unlucky in that aspect.

Second to play for the UK was current UK Champion Reidy and he also found things difficult in his Away leg losing 4-2. He soon turned it around in the Home Leg and was handing out a Fifa Lesson the French Player Pipo who found himself 5-0 down. This proved to be too much for Pipo who threw in the towel on 65mins as he simply couldn't take any more punishment , which was very disappointing to see. So that's 3 Wins for the French and 1 win to the UK. We will continue to keep you updated with all the matches as and when they happen.

Sweetpatch's FA Cup Snippets

Sweetpatch's Soccer SnippetsNationwide Conference side Scarborough produced heroics on their way to a 1-0 defeat by Chelsea at the McCain Stadium.

John Terry scored for the Premiership title challengers after just nine minutes but Scarborough rallied and should have had a late penalty when William Gallas appeared to handle.

Francis Jeffers scored his first goal since returning on loan from Arsenal to keep Everton's FA Cup hopes alive in the 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Jeffers forced the ball home with barely a minute left to cancel out Sean Davis' second-half effort in this fourth round tie.

Gary Doherty's first goal of the season earned Tottenham a 1-1 draw and denied Manchester City a place in the last 16 after they had led through Nicolas Anelka in a dominant first-half.

Manchester United overcame a spirited Northampton Town to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over the third division side on Sunday. United striker Diego Forlan had an early penalty saved, but the Uruguayan redeemed himself with a goal which added to a Mikael Silvestre effort and an own goal.

West Ham's three-pronged strikeforce of Brian Deane, Marlon Harewood and David Connelly scored a goal apiece as Premiership Wolves were swept aside 3-1 at Molineux.

Arsenal avenged their midweek defeat by Middlesbrough with a comfortable 4-1 FA Cup fourth-round win a Highbury. Middlesbrough beat the Gunners 1-0 in London in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final on Tuesday but they fared worse today when Dennis Bergkamp struck after 19 minutes.

Joseph-Desire Job equalised four minutes later to keep Boro in the hunt but Freddie Ljungberg restored the Arsenal advantage. The game was effectively sealed when Ljungberg claimed his second after 68 minutes but there was time left for George Boateng to be sent off for two yellow cards and David Bentley to add a fourth.

Matthew Taylor ended Scunthorpe's hopes of a Cup upset with a brace to see Portsmouth safely into round five after a 2-1 win.

There were two early goals at Anfield when Liverpool took the lead through Bruno Cheyrou after one minute and Laurent Robert equalised for Newcastle just moments later. Cheyrou's second goal in the 61st minute was enough to earn the home side victory.

Birmingham made the perfect start to their clash with First Division strugglers Wimbledon when Bryan Hughes scored after just four minutes.

Colchester threatened an upset after taking the lead against First Division Coventry at Highfield Road but had to be content with a replay after a 1-1 draw.

Burnley's top-scorer Robbie Blake scored twice to send the Clarets into the fifth round following a comfortable 3-1 home win over Gillingham.

In the other all First Division encounter, at Portman Road, Sunderland beat Ipswich 2-1.

Swansea provided the biggest shock of the FA Cup fourth round so far when they fought back from a goal down to knock First Division Preston out at the Vetch Field.

The battle between two Second Division sides at Kenilworth Road was decided by a Mickey Mellon goal with nine minutes to go which sent Tranmere through at the expense of Luton.

France v United Kingdom (International Friendly)

France v United Kingdom

The United Kingdom SFTLA National Team will be doing battle with the mighty France over the next 7 Days in the first International Friendly for the combined Sweetpatch FTL Academy. The lucky Seven Players chosen to represent their Nation are as follows :- Reidy , JPM , Bradders , Kev , Culver , Kotp , Deadcell

The France Manager chose the Fixtures and there are some very tasty fixtures to be had. Current UK Champion Reidy will do battle against Pipo and our sources inform us that this is definitely the Fixture to watch as Pipo is looking for revenge after Reidy beat him at the European Cyber Games.

World Cup Champion JPM will do battle against Aghaton and this should also be an interesting fixture although not much is known about Aghaton. FTL Treble Winer Kotp takes on Nobody who was also at the European Cyber Games to cheer on his fellow countrymen so this is another fixture that is bound to be tough. We will continue to keep you informed of this International Friendly as and when it happens so stay tuned.

Sweetpatch's Premiership Round-Up

Sweetpatch's Soccer SnippetsChelsea's title challenge suffered another serious blow as they lacked the inspiration to find a way past a determined Birmingham side at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea made heavy weather of a hotly-contested 0-0 draw in which Robbie Savage, Stephen Clemence and Maik Taylor all excelled for the depleted visitors.

Victory would have taken Chelsea two points behind Manchester United and a further two adrift of Arsenal. But having lost at home to Liverpool 11 days earlier, they suffered further frustration.

The closest they came was when Joe Cole struck the post. The diminutive midfielder hammered against the upright after 31 minutes of an energetic, albeit largely uneventful, opening 45 minutes but Steve Bruce's side were dogged and determined. After the break William Gallas should have done better when the ball dropped to him in the box but, with Taylor stranded, Olivier Tebily raced back to make a superb goal-line clearance for Birmingham.

Thierry Henry lifted Arsenal back to the top of the Premiership with his 18th and 19th goals of the season in a 2-0 success at Villa Park. Henry opened the scoring with a controversial free-kick after half an hour, and then added the decisive second from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Victory enabled the Gunners to move two points clear of Manchester United after the champions shock defeat at Wolves, and maintained their unbeaten league record.

Leeds' problems on and off the field mounted as they slipped to the bottom of the Barclaycard Premiership. The Yorkshire side have until Monday to find a way of reaching a new agreement with their creditors and a 2-1 defeat to Southampton - coupled with Wolves' stunning 1-0 win over Manchester United - saw them drop to 20th.

Wolves caused the shock of the Barclaycard Premiership season so far by beating league leaders Manchester United 1-0 at Molineux. Kenny Miller's assured finish secured the win which Wolves' tenacity had deserved. They held on despite late pressure from the Red Devils. Former United midfielder Paul Ince also hit the post for Wolves with a long-range strike.

Leicester were seconds away from climbing out of the relegation zone as they were held 3-3 by Middlesbrough. Boro, who had not scored in four of their last five home league games, were gifted the lead in the eighth minute when City goalkeeper Ian Walker's clearance cannoned off Joseph-Desire Job into the path of Juninho, who tucked away the chance. Walker made amends by saving a penalty from Job on the stroke of half-time to keep the Foxes in it, and it proved to be vital as City mounted a second-half revival.

Paul Dickov scored from close range following a 49th-minute corner and added a second from a similar position after 64 minutes when Riccardo Scimeca headed a deep free-kick back across goal. The third arrived when Mark Schwarzer gifted possession to Marcus Bent and the striker made no mistake. Massimo Maccarone scored a late goal for Boro and deep in injury time Steve McClaren's men levelled the scores.

As a result Portsmouth avoided dropping into the bottom three despite a 1-0 loss at Bolton.

At the right end of the table, Charlton remain best placed to secure the fourth Champions League spot after a 1-0 win at Everton. The Toffees piled the pressure on Charlton at Goodison Park but could not find a way through and former Everton man Graham Stuart gave Alan Curbishley's side the lead with four minutes to go to half-time.

Helder Postiga finally grabbed his first league goal for Tottenham as fifth-placed Liverpool slumped to a 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.

Manchester City's winless run in the league now stretches to 11 games after they were held 1-1 by Blackburn at the City of Manchester Stadium.

SFTLA PS2 Division 1 Update Week 3

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueHot off the press and following yesterdays Match Report today we have another Match Report for you from the Real Sociedad v Santos game.

This week, Real Sociedad were hoping to continue there perfect start to the season with a third successive win when they played hosts to Santos. The early signs were promising for the home team with the midfield players dominant and the pace of the attacking players running riot in the Santos defence.

The first real chance fell to Real Sociedad after about twenty five minutes when Lee Chun Soo turned away from the mystified Santos defender and found the space to fire a low shot past the keeper but only to suffer the agony of hitting the right hand post and see the ball scrabbled clear by the defence. Santos did settle down a little after that and it was a close fought battle until the sides went in 0-0 at half time.

The punters backed Real Sociedad at half time and they weren't disappointed, Nihat became the hero of the home fans and after scoring a hat-trick in his previous game opened the scoring with header from the six yard line after a well placed cross. Real Sociedad continued to dominate and although allowing Santos one or two shots, never looked liked giving up their lead.

Then two minutes from the end Real Sociedad 100% record was confirmed when Nihat slotted in his fifth goal in two games after poor judgement from the Santos keeper. He had a chance for his second hat-trick in as many games when he won penalty in the very last action of the game but Fabio Costa got up and redeemed himself with a magnificent save. An action packed game and a deserved win for league leaders Real Sociedad.

SFTLA PS2 Division 1 Update Week 3

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

Today we have a result from the PS2 Division One League.

Betis played host to Scottish Champions Celtic this week for a much anticipated game with both teams looking to heighten themselves in the division 1 table. The game didn't take long before it featured its first piece of action with John Hartson finding some space in the Betis defense and finishing very precisely in the bottom left corner from just inside the penalty box.

Once again Betis had been beaten by an early goal like the week before. The game was seeming very lively down both ends when a breakthrough came for Betis. Some great one touch passes sent Tote down the right wing crossing a low pass into the area which was expected to be taken care of but some mis-communication from the defender and goalkeeper caused Palemo the easy chance of walking the ball into the net. The game became very open with both teams having full confidence in winning but in the 37th minute Celtic took a lofting cross right onto the head of John Hartson which he guided to the right hand side of the goal putting Celtic 2-1 up.

And half time came with both teams still confident of winning. No changes for the second half. Betis came out second half looking sharp but alot of their passes were not pulling off and Celtic kept cool under pressure until the 54th minute where Tote chased down a Celtic defender in the area and managed to slip it past the goalkeeper in time bringing Betis back with a chance.

4 minutes later Betis's quick passing found a gap in the Celtic defense leaving Palemo 10 yards to run before sending a well placed shot into the top left corner from just inside the area giving the home crowd alot to cheer about. After this goal Betis finally looked confident and should have scored more if it wasn't for some great defending and the Celtic post. But Celtic never gave up, and as it came to the end of the game Hartson never lost spirit and scored a great header from left side of the box from a very precise corner which sent to Betis fans quiet. The game ended with both teams attempting long balls to try and find a winner but it ended at 3-3 with John Hartson as a deserved man of the match.

FA Cup - Chelsea 4 v 0 Watford

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea's strikers did their talking eloquently on the pitch as they sent a defiant message to owner Roman Abramovich amid the club's on-going search for yet another top-class forward with a 4-0 victory over Watford.

Adrian Mutu scored twice, while Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen were also on target as Chelsea completed a routine FA Cup third round replay victory at Stamford Bridge - and the trio can only hope that Abramovich was paying close attention.

Mutu, who ended a 13-game goal drought at Leicester, struck again after just seven minutes against Watford, with Hasselbaink taking his season's tally to 13. While Mutu scored again late on, there was also the added bonus of Damien Duff making his long-awaited return from injury as a substitute as he set up Gudjohnsen for Chelsea's late fourth.

All in all, therefore, a satisfying night for Claudio Ranieri as he showed his determination to win the FA Cup by fielding a virtually full-strength line-up against a gallant Watford side. Joe Cole was promptly included in the starting line-up, with Marcel Desailly rested after being given such a torrid time by Watford at Vicarage Road.

Bring on Scarborough!

SFTLA PS2 Leagues Division 1 Week 2 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

Santos played host to Real Betis here today and both Teams were eager for a victory. Santos already victorious in their opening fixture wanted to build on that where as Real Betis who's opening fixture was Cancelled were hoping to start their campaign off well.

So the stage was set and Santos kicked the game home attacking the goal from left to right. After only 5mins Santos got the Dream Start as Diego fired home to take the Home side into a 1-0 lead. Things were being mixed up well in midfield and you could see this game was going to be a close affair but on 33mins Salvation for the Visitors as Jorge Tote calmly struck the ball home to level the scores at 1-1 as both Teams headed down the tunnel for their Half Time Cups of Tea.

The Second Half began and much like the First Half this game was turning into a Midfield Battle , with possession being gained and lost and crunching tackles coming in left , right and centre but on 61mins the Home Fans were silenced as Joaquin calmly slotted home for the Visitors to take them into a 1-2 lead.

Santos tried desperately to break open the Real Betis defence in search of the equaliser , but their efforts were thwarted by some great defending and the Away Side held on to the 1-2 score line to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

Santos will be disappointed they didn't get anything from this match but must be confident that they have the ability to challenge for a promotion place.

SFTLA PS2 Premiership & Division 1 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

The Match everyone had been waiting for finally took place over the weekend Real Madrid v Juventus

Juventus lost their Top Spot last week after Boca inflicted their first dropped points of the League, so Juventus were determined to take all 3pts here and keep up the pressure on Real Madrid.

Real Madrid playing in front of their Home Fans started the better and were quickly in control of this Match when on 27mins Real Madrid were awarded a penalty by the referee. David Beckham stepped up and smashed the ball into the back of the net as the home fans went wild.

The Half Time whistle brought this First Half to a close with the score Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus.

The Second Half began and much like the first Real Madrid were quickly in control of the game again and on 58mins Raul was allowed to much space by theJuventus defence and he made no mistake in hitting the back of the net to make the score 2-0 to the Home Side.

Both Teams had chances to add more goals to this match but the Final Whistle came and ended this match Real Madrid 2-0 Juventus. An important 3pts for Real Madrid as they now open up a comfortable 5pts gap over Juventus in 2nd Spot.

Juventus on the other hand look as if their Title Challenge has hit a brick wall and it will be interesting to see if they can recover from this almighty setback.

In other news Barcelona got of the mark as they managed their first Win of the Season against Inter Milan. As predicted in Week 4 after Barcelona so nearly upset Real Madrid , it wouldn't be long before they obtained all 3pts against someone and against Inter Milan they did just that.Barcelona hero was Ronaldinho as he bagged a superb Hat-Trick for the Home Side. Vieri bagged a brace for the Visitors but it wasn't enough and Barcelona took all 3pts as the final whistle ended this game Barcelona 3-2 Inter Milan.

In Division One news ..Real Sociedad went top of the League over the weekend after an emphatic 5-2 demolition job over Dortmund. An impressive Hat-Trick by Nihat helped the Home side power to Victory here as they controlled the game from start to finish. Dortmund gave it their best shot , but on the day were found wanting against a better Team and the final score was Real Sociedad 5-2 Dortmund.

Sweetpatch's Premiership Round-Up

Sweetpatch's Soccer Snippets Manchester United 0 v 0 Newcastle United
Two of the Barclaycard Premiership's most deadly front-men barely fashioned a chance between them on a day when defences ruled but as the home side celebrated the point which allowed them to leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the league, the Magpies will lament the decision which cost them victory.

When Shearer sees a television replay of the incident midway through the first half when the former England captain clashed with Tim Howard inside the United box, his initial feeling it was a penalty will be confirmed.

He won the race to reach Gary Neville's underhit back pass and was sent sprawling by the United keeper, who arrived an instant later. To the visitors' disbelief referee Paul Durkin waved away the appeals and Shearer was denied the chance to give his side a lead they would have deserved.

After a poor start, United battled back and had their own tale of woe to fall back on when Mikael Silvestre's second-half effort was ruled out for a debatable shove on Andy O'Brien.

Though it ended the home side's eight-match winning streak and extended Newcastle's 32-year wait for an Old Trafford win, neither side will be too displeased at the outcome which enhances their respective championship and Champions League aspirations.

Leicester 0 v 4 Chelsea
In Sunday's other game, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink eased the pressure on manager Claudio Ranieri with a two-goal blast to rekindle Chelsea's Barclaycard Premiership title hopes and add to Leicester's relegation worries with a 4-0 win.

Hasselbaink took advantage of being restored to the starting line-up to earn Chelsea their seventh away win of the campaign before substitute Adrian Mutu and Celestine Babayaro struck in the final three minutes.

The Dutchman opened the scoring on 11 minutes. Mario Melchiot played the telling ball into the path of Joe Cole and his low cross took a deflection off Steve Howey and was turned in deftly at the near post by Hasselbaink, who got in front of newcomer Nikos Dabizas.

Then two minutes before the interval Chelsea took a stranglehold on the game as they doubled their lead in fortuitous fashion, Hasselbaink's free-kick from 30 yards out striking Dabizas and flying into the opposite corner of the net to leave Ian Walker stranded.

Leicester did not go down without a fight and John Terry cleared a Jamie Scowcroft header off the line while Paul Dickov stabbed the ball wide of the post, but with three minutes left Mutu wrapped up the game, curling a superb shot past Walker.

Then in injury-time it was the turn of Babayaro to get on the score-sheet after a mistake by Paul Brooker.

Arsenal 4 v 1 Middlesbrough
Arsenal moved level at the top of the Barclaycard Premiership table (for 24 hours) with a convincing win over Middlesbrough in the first of the four matches between the teams this month. With fellow leaders Manchester United and fellow title hopefuls Chelsea not in action until Sunday, Arsene Wenger's team knew they could take over at the top with a four-goal victory.

Charlton put last week's FA Cup exit at Gillingham behind them with a 2-0 defeat of Wolves which kept them fourth.

Liverpool are fifth after a 1-0 defeat of Aston Villa checked the visitors' recent surge up the table.

Bolton won a see-saw match at Blackburn 4-3 to claim bragging rights in the Lancashire derby.

Birmingham also came from behind to beat Southampton at St Andrews 1 v 2.

Manchester City's winless run stretched to 14 games as Portsmouth continued the trend of coming from behind to win at Fratton Park. Dejan Stefanovic gave the hosts a 19th-minute lead but Nicolas Anelka equalised within two minutes and Antoine Sibierski gave City an interval lead.

But under-pressure boss Kevin Keegan was left stunned by a home fightback, with Yakubu Ayegbini (52 and 77) and Teddy Sheringham (58) lifting Pompey out of the relegation zone.

Leeds remain deep in trouble after former signing Robbie Keane returned to Elland Road and scored the only goal of the game with Tottenham - and gave the north London side a third successive win.

Manchester United target Louis Saha netted from the penalty spot just before half-time to give Fulham the interval lead against Everton at Loftus Road. Steed Malbranque doubled the advantage within a minute of the restart, with Kevin Kilbane's goal nine from time mere consolation for David Moyes' men.

Chelsea 0 v 1 Liverpool

Visit Chelsea mini siteUnder-fire Gerard Houllier's tactics paid off as Liverpool snatched a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

With England striker Michael Owen on the bench for the first time in two months Houllier chose to bring in Djimi Traore and Bruno Cheyrou - two of the under-achieving foreign players the manager criticised this week - and the latter repaid his boss by scoring the winner.

Lone striker Emile Heskey crossed from the right wing in the 33rd minute and the France international stabbed home his first Premiership goal from six yards.

However, Liverpool's injury worries were worsened when goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek sustained a groin injury in the second half and - with Chris Kirkland already out for two months - had to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi.

El-Hadji Diouf was then sent off for a second bookable offence after an innocuous clash with Adrian Mutu in the last five minutes to increase the pressure for the visitors but they clung on to record their first Premiership win at Stamford Bridge.

SFTLA World Cup Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

With the SFTLA PC Leagues set to kick of in the coming weeks, over the Christmas and New Year we decided to have a SFTLA Pre-Season World Cup Tournament  to give everyone a chance to get themselves a bit of practice and get used to online play before the new SFTLA Season gets underway. With the Pre-season Play-offs a huge success it also gave the current FTL crew a chance to assess the new boys in the SFTLA

20 teams participated in the Tournament with a draw being held to decide the teams, with the groups already having been drawn beforehand. Phase 1 comprised of 5 groups A - E, the group winner automatically going through to the Quarter-Finals and the 2nd placed teams and the best 3rd place going into Qualifying play-offs. From there on in it would be knockout stages with golden goal becoming involved if games are drawn and a two-legged SFTLA World Cup final with away goals involved.

The current SFTLA Treble Winner Kotp got the lucky side of the team draw and drew out the French but would be in an interesting group in Group D with the Mad Jock as the flamboyant Mexicans as his opponents. Group B had the usual tournament tag "Group of Death" with Kev, Rich and Bradders being paired together. The other groups were pretty even with Argentina (Leon), Senegal (JPM) and England (Van) looking the favourites to qualify from their respective groups.

Phase One
Group A: Argentina (Leon), Italy (Scatty), USA (Hez) and Ireland (Snake).

Argentina took to the top early on with a victory over Ireland but then Italy took over with some impressive displays including a shock win over Argentina 2-1 to finish the group undefeated. Ireland grabbed the 100th goal of the Tournament in their last group game against the USA to go out of the tournament on a high note.

Final Standings: Italy (9pts), Argentina (6pts), Ireland (3pts Eliminated), USA (0pts Eliminated)

Group B: Czech Republic (Kev), Sweden (Bradders), Germany (Rich), Cameroon (Harty).

"Group of Death" tag is right for this Group as some very interesting games have taken place. The Czech Republic took the early advantage in the group beating Sweden 3-2 and Cameroon 9-1 and looked odds on for topping the group. Things soon changed however, as the Czech Republic were hit for 5 by Germany and then Germany themselves were given a lesson as Sweden beat them 5-1. That left Germany needing to beat Cameroon by 4 goals to move ahead of the Czech Republic. Sweden also needed to beat Cameroon by 2 goals to finish ahead of the Czech Republic as well so we were guaranteed an exciting climax in the final few matches. Germany got their 4 in a 4-0 win over Cameroon and now it has left the Czech Republic participation in the Tournament on a knife-edge. Sweden v Cameroon game finaly got underway and Sweden dominated this match from start to finish and won destroyed Cameroon 6-0 to win the Group and book themselves a place in the Quarter Finals. The Czech Republic also received some good news after they also managed to advance into the Playoff Stage as the Best Overall 3rd Place.

Final Standings: Germany (6pts +10 GD), Germany (6pts +5 GD), Czech Republic (6pts +4 GD), Cameroon (0pts Eliminated)

Group C: Nigeria (Colin), Spain (Bolly), Brazil (Kwiz), Senegal (JPM).

Senegal (Group Favourites) finished top with some big wins, 6-0 against Brazil and 5-0 against Spain and they looked a good bet for the Quarter Finals Stage. Nigeria were considered to be their rivals in the group and they also started of well with a 4-1 win against Spain.

Then the shock of the tournament occurred as Brazil turned this Group on its head by beating Nigeria 2-0. Brazil followed that impressive performance up by grinding out a 1-0 win against Spain and it left Nigeria's participation in the competition hanging in the balance going into the last game against mighty Senegal to set us up for a very exciting match. Senegal took the lead early on and it looked like business as usual, but 2 goals in 6 minutes for Nigeria looked to have saved them as the clock slowly ticked away. The Stadium Clock hit 90mins and the whole stadium erupted in Whistles as the Nigeria fans urged the Referee to blow his whistle to end the match. Senegal continued to press forward looking for the equaliser and were awarded with a corner deep into Injury Time. The corner was whipped in and Fadiga the Giant rose highest to power his header into the back of the net that would result in Nigeria being Eliminated from the Tournament and shockingly out of the competition!!!

Final Standings: Senegal (7pts), Brazil (6pts), Nigeria (4pts Eliminated), Spain (0pts Eliminated)

Group D: Mexico (Jock), France (Kotp), Denmark (Andy), Turkey (Simcut).

The flamboyant Mexico took the front early on with two impressive wins against Denmark  and Turkey. France then kicked-off their campaign crushing their opponents just like Mexico had done. The stage was set as it went down to the last game of the Group between France and Mexico to decide which of these two Teams would top the Group and automatically qualify for the Quarter Finals. The  match kicked off and pretty soon it was obvious to see the tactics the Mexico side were using as time and time again late crunching tackles came in every time France had possession.  France used this to their advantage by playing quick one touch passes to get themselves into the Mexico penalty box and wait for the wreck less tackle to come in. Mexico didn't disappoint as time after time they panicked and put in crunching tackles which resulted in the Referee making no hesitation at pointing to the spot, Mexico were amazingly caught out by this shrewd tactic 4 Times and Henry made no mistake in punishing Mexico all 4 times as France raced into a 4-0 lead. The Mexico keeper obviously frustrated by his Teams performance then fired home a back pass into his own net to seal a 5-0 victory for France to leave them Group Winners and into the Quater Finals and the Mexicans heading for the play-offs. Altogether France have netted 17 goals in only 3 Games and are one of the few teams left in the competition yet to concede a goal, and will be a tough nut to crack for the rest of the tournament.

Final Standings: France (9pts), Mexico (6pts), Turkey (1pt Eliminated), Denmark (1pt Eliminated)

Group E: Portugal (Nidge), England (Van), Scotland (Ant), Korea (Matt).

England as expected took to the front with solid displays against Scotland and Portugal and look on course for the quarters with one game remaining. Portugal beat Scotland 2-0 to go 2nd in the Group but their defeat by England meant that the Qualifying play-off place was still wide open. Korea started off their campaign very impressively with a crushing 7-0 victory over Scotland to take over 2nd spot from Portugal, but in their next match against England they were found wanting and lost 1-0 to set up an exciting showdown in the last match against Portugal.

Korea only needed a Draw to guarantee Qualification to the Playoffs , whereas Portugal needed all 3pts. Korea started the better and were soon in front when Park Hi Sung fired home a lovely shot that squeezed in the left hand post. Portugal then dug deep and minutes later a cracking effort from Pauleta slammed the back of the Korean net to tie the score at 1-1 and Game On. Both teams pressed for the winner in the second half with Portugal coming closest on many occassions and they must of thought the game was there for the taking when Korea were reduced to 10 Men.  The game ticked by and Portugal were bombarding the Korea box with wave after wave of attacks and then on 88mins it looked as if the breakthrough had finaly come for Portugal when a fierce shot was fired him from outside of the box and looked to be sailing into the back of the net, but somehow the Korean keeper managed to get a hand to it and keep it out, Portugal fans were on their feet as the rebound fell straight into the path of Pauleta 7yrds out and it looked a formality for him just to side foot home. Amazingly he lost his composure and smashed the ball high over the bar much to the relief of the Korean fans and that was the last chance for Portugal as the game finished 1-1 to send Korea into the Playoffs and Portugal on the plane home thinking what might of been.

Final Standings: England (9pts), Korea (4pts +6 GD), Portugal (4pts +6 GD Eliminated), Scotland (0pts Eliminated)

SFTLA Division 1 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueThis Week saw the beginning of the SFTLA Division 1 and like the Premiership i will be bringing you the News as and when it happens so that you are all kept up to date with all the latest News from both of these Big Leagues.

Our first match to be played was between Dortmund v Santos. Both teams wanted to get off to a good start here and it was the Visitors who struck the early goal when William fired home on 17mins. Dortmund rallied and it wasn't long before they were right back in the game when Tomas Rosiscky was given too much space on 42mins and he made no mistake in powering his shot home passed the helpless keeper. The Referee blew his whistle to end the First Half with both teams tied at 1-1.

The Second half began and after only 3mins of the restart Santos silenced the Home Fans when William again found space to fire the Visitors into a 1-2 lead. Dortmund tried to press for the equaliser, but Santos dug in deep and defended well and were rewarded with all 3pts to take them top of the Division 1 League Table as this Match finished Dortmund 1 - 2 Santos.

PS2 Premiership Week 5 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueWeek 5 of the Premiership took place over the Festive Period and here's the latest update of the matches that have been played.

Liverpool entertained the mighty Real Madrid and both teams were looking for all 3pts here for various reasons. Real Madrid took control early on and the breakthrough came as early as the 9th Minute when Raul fired the visitors into a 0-1 lead. Liverpool pulled their socks up and defended stoutly for most of the game and it took Real Madrid until the 80th minute to finaly breakdown the Liverpool defence when Raul found space and fired home his second of the game, to add insult to injury Ronaldo scored again 6mins later to settle things and Real Madrid ended up 0-3 winners to keep the pressure up on League Leaders Juventus

In other news Chelsea faced AC Milan and with both teams sitting in Mid Table a win would take any of these two teams up into the top 5. AC Milan got off to a perfect start when they shocked the Chelsea fans on 20mins when Inzaghi made no mistake to put the visitors into a 0-1 lead. Chelsea were rocked again 5mins later when Andrea Pirlo smashed in AC Milan second and it was starting to look just how many AC Milan would score. Chelsea had other ideas and on 37mins Hermon Crespo pulled one back for the Home Team to put them right back in the game. As the 1st Half was coming to a close something spectacular happened, Mutu fired home to level the scores at 2-2 and from the resulting kick off ,AC Milan were caught sleeping as Chelsea regained possession and Damien Duff fired Chelsea into a 3-2 lead and Stamford Bridge erupted as the Half Time whistle blew.

The second half began and AC Milan were pressing hard to get back into this game and on 67mins they were rewarded when Inzaghi fired home his second of the game to bring both teams level at 3-3. AC Milan continued to press and they snatched the vital fourth goal on 73mins when Rivaldo was given too much space and he made no mistake in beating Cudichini to take the score to 3-4 and seal a very important 3pts for AC Milan.
