Wembley may miss FA Cup deadline

Wembley may miss FA Cup deadlineThe new Wembley Stadium may not be finished in time for the FA Cup final on 13 May, the Australian company responsible for the project has warned.

Martin Tidd, Multiplex's UK managing director, said there was a 70% chance the stadium would be ready.

Tidd said Multiplex could not afford any further delays if it was to meet the 31 March deadline to hand the £757m project to the Football Association.

The FA has provisionally booked Cardiff's Millennium Stadium for the FA Cup final as a contingency plan.

Tidd said Multiplex would know in two or three weeks whether it would be in a position to complete the stadium by 31 March, but that it needed everything to go "like a Swiss watch".

The main obstacle to completing the stadium on time is the "depropping" of the roof on the south side of the stadium. In layman's terms, this means taking the supporting structures - steel cables and so on - away to allow the roof to ease into its final position. But this work will be at the mercy of the weather; winds stronger than seven knots would mean that the roof could not be safely worked on.

Tidd said the work would also depend on the performance of subcontractors, design changes and relations with trade unions. "It does not all come down to us at the end of the day - there's a lot of people needed to make sure the FA Cup comes off," he said.

Wembley Facts and Figures:

  • Of 90,000 seats, 45,000 are in place
  • Of 161 hospitality boxes, 24 are "substantially complete"
  • Of 127 toilet pods, eight are complete
  • Of 44 catering kiosks, four are complete

"We have 3,500 guys putting huge pressure on the contractors to drive the job over the line. There's still a risk and we are managing it, but there may be other contractors out there that might not see it through."

Earlier on Monday a Multiplex spokesman had said Wembley was still on target to hand the project over to Wembley National Stadium Ltd, the company set up by the FA to run the stadium.

Multiplex has issued four profits warnings since last August. Difficulties with the redevelopment of the 90,000-seat stadium prompted the resignation of Multiplex executive chairman John Roberts in May as the group blamed "cost blow-outs" for the spiralling cost of the stadium.

In December, Multiplex said it faces losses of up to £75m on the whole project, suffering a significant fall in its share price as a result.

Will it be ready or won't it?

CEP 0.11 is coming

CEP Career Expansion PatchFinally CEP, the Career Expansion Patch, reached the most important Fifa community site, here on Sweetpatch: this is a great honour for this project and a strong motivation to make this work even more ambitious and wide.

CEP version 0.11 is almost ready: I finished all the code (database) and graphical elements and I'm in the phase of testing. As new additions that were not anticipated for this release you will find Mexican second division (Primera A) and Venezuela Primera Division. I'm really proud of the work I have been able to do with the winter transfers: with about 25 hours of work during the last week I managed to do about 700 transfers around the world, updating rosters and formations thanks to the great help of CEP updaters too (please, consider the possibility to join the CEP as updaters of your favourite team or league to increase the quality of this patch: see the section Join CEP! of this site for further informations). A great addition to CEP is the presence of new in-stadium flags for all South American new teams of the CEP and for Italian third division (Serie C) teams. I'm working in free time to Rest of Europe flags too to see if I will be able to add them to the version 0.11.

Next version will be released on 3rd of February here on Sweetpatch and will feature an exe installer (Warning! This will be NOT an exe installer as the one of many "superpatches" that overwrites and modify files contained in original big files of Fifa: will be just a for-dummies installation that will copy the proper files in the proper place). Regarding the problem of freezing during the transfers market I'm optimistic enough: I found many incoherences in the db and I fixed them: these errors could have been the cause of freezings so now I'm testing if this is definitively resolved. I received a mail from EA authors too trying to understand the cause of these problems: the definitive solution would be a utility that lets me understand what happens to Fifa when it freezed during transfermarket: if it's for memory leak or for a db problem, so if anyone know such a debugging utility let me know. You'll receive news about this anyway in these days. CEP 0.11 will feature full Fifa 2006 languages support thanks to an intense work of translation.

I'm very glad that the most important national websites are joining the CEP: thanks to the collaboration with Fifamexico.net we will feature an incredibly detailed Mexican league together with the second Mexican division. A great Brazilian Fifa site, Fifabrasil joined the CEP too and we are trying to add the full Brazilian Seria A to 0.11 version; anyway full Brazil Serie A and Brazilian regional leagues will be present in 0.12. A special thanking goes to Jose Delgado, a great Venezuelan graphical editor, who is helping me and the CEP to feature great improvements in South American teams graphical elements.

Italian Lega Calcio Review
Lazio 1
Cagliari 1

In a very very tough game no one of the two teams Lazio or Cagliari could get the three points. The game was so nervous full of dangerous harsh tackles & too many cards especially for Lazio who had two red cards & three yellow cards while Cagliari had only two yellow cards. Lazio was the 1st to score in the 37th min through Paolo Di Canio while Cagliari equalized in the 2nd half in the 69th min after Sebastiano Sevilia was shown the red card in 41st min & ten minutes before Lazio had another man sent off who was Liverani.

Inter Milan 3
Palermo 0
Inter continue following Juventus at the top of the Lega Calcio after beating Palermo by three goals to nil to take their revenge from Palermo who beat them before by three goals to two. The three goals were scored through Cambiasso, Luis Figo & Christian netting an own goal. By this result Inter are still in the 2nd position after Juventus.
Ascoli 2
Lecce 0
Ascoli still performing well this season after beating the bottom team Lecce by two goals to nil scored in the 1st half through Marco Ferranti in the 4th min & Sisa Milanovic in the 37th min. The game also saw many yellow cards as Lecce took three yellow cards & Ascoli took three yellow cards & one red card for Christian Del Grosso.
Udinese 1
AS Roma 4
Roma continue their good results, that they began by beating Milan, as they thrashed Udinese by four goals to one scored through their rising star Reborto Mancini (2x), Daniel De Rossi & Christian Chivu. The game began so nervously and saw one yellow card for Christian Chivu & another one Damian & a red card for Gampiero Udinese player which was the turning point of the game as Mancini opened the score through a penalty kick in the 39th min. In the second half Roma continued dominating the game & scored another goal through Daniel Di Rossi in the 62nd min before Di Natale scored the only goal for Udinese in the 65th min but then Mancini returned to scoring netting another goal in the 75th min before Chivu scoring the fourth in the 79th min through a penalty kick to end the game in their favour with this big result to maintain their position in the 6th spot in the table of the Lega Calcio.
Siena 0
AC Milan 3
Milan returned home with the three points after beating Siena away by three goals to nil scored through Kaka (2x) and Shevchenko to maintain their position in the third spot in the table. AC Milan dominated the game from the beginning to the end & were worth this big result over the very weak team Siena.
Reggina 2
Sampadoria 1
Reggina got a very important three points on their way to escape the relegation zone after beating Sampadoria by two goals to one in a very strong game witnessed the three goals in the 1st half as Giacomo Tedsco scored the opener for Reggina & then Vitale equalized for Sampadoria in the 44th min before Nicola Amoroso scored the winner for Reggina in the 45th min.
Livorno 1
Trevisio 1
In an unexpected match for Livorno, who had many important games before with the giants of the Calcio, but couldn't beat the very weak team Trevisio & lost two important points by that draw with Trevisio that came in the final minutes of the game & after two men were down from Trevisio in the 75th min & 90th min. Trevisio showed a solid performance defending their goal and scored 7th min until two men were sent off as Livorno scored the equalizer in the 90th min through their player Fabio Galanti before the final whistle to give Livorno the hardest point in the Lega Calcio.
Parma 2
Chievo Verona 1

Juventus 2
Empoli 1
In a very hard game for the Giants Juventus, they beat Empoli by two goals to one thanks to Cannavaro head. Juventus began with attacking football in order to compensate their draw last week with Verona but Empoli was the 1st to score through Almeron from a perfect free kick in the 2nd min but Cannavaro header scored a very difficult goal to end the 1st half in a draw. In the 2nd half the game still like that until another header from the defender Cannavaro gave the Giants Juventus the three points of the game after Empoli made it so difficult for the Giants. Wigan go through on away goals

Wigan reached the Carling Cup final - the first major final in their history - as Jason Roberts' 119th-minute effort put them through on away goals.

Keeper Mike Pollitt made a series of fine stops - including Jose Reyes' first-half penalty - before Thierry Henry headed home on 65 minutes.

And Robin van Persie's superb free-kick in the second period of extra-time looked to have put Arsenal through.

But some slack defending let Roberts in to scramble home the vital goal.

Blackburn 1

(agg 3-2)

Manchester United booked their place to play Wigan in the Carling Cup final after overcoming Blackburn.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy fired in a shot to put United ahead before Steven Reid equalised when he lashed home as both players pounced on defensive mistakes.

Zurab Khizanishvili was punished for handball to Blackburn's fury but Brad Friedel saved Van Nistelrooy's penalty.

A half-time tunnel fracas marred the tie before Louis Saha spooned in a volley for United's winner.

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Charlton 1

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Charlton 1Charlton have again proved nuisance London neighbours as they become the first team to take Premiership points away from Stamford Bridge this season.

As with the Carling Cup game back in October, the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Chelsea took a goal lead in a comfortable first-half but then lost their way after the break. It was debutant substitute Marcus Bent who drew the game level. The task of re-establishing the lead was made all the harder by the dismissal of Ricardo Carvalho late on.

  • 1-0: After a couple of early Charlton shots, the Blues had gained control of the game by the 18th minute when Duff took a corner from the left. Crespo at the near-post flicked his header straight at Myrhe but when the Charlton keeper failed to hold, Gudjohnsen reacted first. The ball was scrambled onto the bar and out by the red shirts gathered back but the linesman instantly flagged for the goal. Replays proved him correct. Gudjohnsen had announced on Friday his wish to contribute more goals as a midfielder. This was his third of the campaign.
  • 1-1: The game continued with little incident until 59 minutes when the equaliser came. Carvalho initially lost a battle, Ambrose picked up the loose ball and chipped forward for Marcus Bent to head home having been played onside by Del Horno.

The visitors from south-east London were delighted with the result. It was just a shame for them that more of their support than the sparse showing here had not witnessed it. As the Chelsea crowd filed quietly out, the feeling was that it was their team’s carelessness rather than any great battling by the away team that had let this one slip.

English Premier League Review

We bring you a summary of all the latest action from the English Premiership:

Barclays Premiership Review
Sat 21
Jan 2006
Visit our home of the English Premier League
Birmingham 5
Portsmouth 0

Birmingham City gave themselves a Barclays Premiership relegation lifeline by maintaining their improved form at St Andrews as they demolished Harry Redknapp's revamped side and pushed them deeper in the mire.

This comprehensive victory thanks to goals from Jiri Jarošik, Jermaine Pennant, Matthew Upson, Mikael Forssell and David Dunn means they have taken 10 points from the last four outings on their home ground.

Bolton 2
Man City 0

Bolton Wanderers chalked up their first win in five Barclays Premiership matches thanks to goals from Jared Borgetti and Kevin Nolan against Manchester City.

Everton 1
Arsenal 0

Everton produced a display of character and defiance to frustrate an Arsenal side who had Cesc Fabregas sent off in injury time. James Beattie put Everton ahead in the first half and could easily have had a couple more as the Gunners wilted against the belligerence of the Toffees who have now gone six matches unbeaten and won their last three in the Barclays Premiership.

Middlesbrough 2
Wigan 3

Neil Mellor ended a year of injury heartbreak to grab a dramatic winner for Wigan Athletic in a five-goal thriller at the Riverside.

Jason Roberts and David Thompson, who arrived on Thursday with Mellor after signing a short-term contract for the remainder of the campaign following his release from Blackburn Rovers, put Wigan in charge in the first half. However, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Aiyegbeni Yakubu hauled the home side level, only for Mellor to strike on his first Barclays Premiership appearance for 368 days after recovering from surgery on both knees to cure tendinitis.

Newcastle 0
Blackburn 1

Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness saw his troubles worsen when a Morten Gamst Pedersen goal 'handed' former club Blackburn Rovers all three points at St James' Park.

Spurs 0
Aston Villa 0

Tottenham Hotspur's quest for Champions League football faltered as they were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa at White Hart Lane.

WBA 0
Sunderland 1
Sunderland seized upon a long-overdue slice of fortune to sink West Bromwich Albion and claim only their second Barclays Premiership win of a difficult season. Anthony Le Tallec’s 72nd-minute effort appeared to be drifting wide when it struck Baggies defender Steve Watson and deflected past Tomasz Kuszczak in the Albion goal.
Sun 22
Jan 2006
Visit our home of the English Premier League
Chelsea 1
Charlton 1

Substitute Marcus Bent marked his Charlton Athletic debut with the goal that ruined Chelsea's 100 per cent home record in the Barclays Premiership. Remarkably, it was the Addicks’ second success of the season at Stamford Bridge following a Carling Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Jose Mourinho’s men in October.

Bent’s header cancelled out Eidur Gudjohnsen’s first-half opener and, for the second week running, the champions finished the game with 10 men after Ricardo Carvalho was sent off for two bookable offences.

Man United 1
Liverpool 0

Rio Ferdinand's injury-time header completed a memorable Manchester United hat-trick as Liverpool's unbeaten run became the latest to end at Old Trafford.

Italian Lega Calcio Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Italian Lega Calcio, Mahmoud Hagi, returns following his exams, to bring us a summary of all week 20's exciting action:

Italian Lega Calcio Review
Chievo Verona 1
Juventus 1

Chievo achieved a very good result by stopping Juventus consecutive wins as they drew their game by a goal each. The game was very difficult for both teams, strong & full of harsh tackles & yellow cards as Chievo got four yellow cards & Juventus got two yellow cards for Mutu & Ibrahimovic.

Chievo were the first to score in the 21st min through their player Daniel while Viera equalized for Juventus ten minutes later in the 31st min to end the first half in a draw & then in the 2nd the game became very nervous & witnessed too many yellow cards & the game continued like that until the final whistle to end the game in a draw & a point for each.

Inter Milan 1
Trevisio 0
Inter succeeded in achieving an important & easy away win against the very poor team this season Trevisio through a good header from Julio Cruz to give Inter a very important three points to decrease the gap with Juventus at the top to eight points.
AC Milan 1
Ascoli 0
After their bad game last week & their setback with Roma, AC Milan achieved three points when they got over the mid table team Ascoli by a single goal scored by Filippo Inzaghi after some wonderful individual work in the 4th min.
Sampadoria 3
Fiorontina 1
Fiorontina had a setback after losing away to Sampadoria by three goals to one. Maxi Tonninio scored the 1st goal for Sampadoria in the 11th min but soon Lega Calcio top scorer Luca Toni equalized for Fiorontina just three minutes after but Tonninio made it again to give the lead again to Sampadoria in the 25th min. Then Flachi made it three after scoring the third to end the game in this bad result for Fiorontina but good result for Sampadoria.
AS Roma 3
Reggina 1
After their important win over Milan, Roma continue their good results by achieving another good win over Reggina by three goals to one at home at the Olympia Stadium. Totti was the man of the match by scoring two goals in the 4th & 65th min before Mancini scored the third in the lat minute after Ivan scored the only goal for Reggina in the 89th min. With this win Roma are still in 6th position hoping to get to a European qualification.
Cagliari 1
Siena 0
Cagliari achieved a very important win on their way to escape from the relegation zone as they are just above the relegation zone by three points. The goal was scored through their top scorer David Suazo.
Empoli 1
Udinese 1
Filiipi Di Silva scored the equalizer in the 55th min for Udinese just three minutes after Tavano score the opener for Empoli from a penalty kick in the 52nd min to help his team Udinese to return home with a point.
Lecce 0
Livorno 0
Livorno wasted a very good chance to get closer to the 1st four positions qualifying for the Champions League as they drew with the very poor team Lecce, who are in the relegation zone & couldn't take advantage of Fiorontina losing.
Messina 1
Lazio 1
Messina got a point on their way to escape the relegation zone as they drew with Lazio 1-1, but they are still just above the relegation zone by three points & need more work.
Palermo 4
Parma 2
Parma are still sinking deeper & deeper in the relegation after this bad result when Palermo thrashed them by four goals to two. Di Michele, Andrea, & Corrini scored the four goals for Palermo while Fabio Enricho & Paolo Cannavaro scored both goals for Parma.

Scottish Premier League Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Scottish Premier League, Gaz Scott, brings us a summary of all the action from last weekend's matches: Scottish Premier League Review
Motherwell 0
Rangers 1

Peter Lovenkrands scored his ninth goal in six games to give Rangers a hard-earned victory at Fir Park. The Danish forward volleyed emphatically past Graeme Smith from six yards out after Marvin Andrews had headed the ball into his path.

Dundee United 2
Falkirk 1

Dundee United's new manager Craig Brewster watched his side claim all three points against Falkirk with a late strike by Derek McInnes.

United, under the charge of caretaker Billy Dodds, took the lead with a sublime chip by David Fernandez. Falkirk levelled when Kenny Milne headed across goal and Daniel McBreen headed into the net from close range. But the winner came in the 89th minute when McInnes fired a fine shot past Allan Ferguson from 20 yards out.

Hibernian 1
Aberdeen 2

Aberdeen were gifted three points at Easter Road by a blundering Hibs side who ran out of luck as they fought hard to stage a second-half comeback.

Gary Caldwell's poor back-pass was intercepted by Stevie Crawford to slip in the opener early in the game. And a terrible mix-up between Chris Hogg and 'keeper Zibi Malkowski allowed Darren Mackie to bundle in the second. Derek Riordan missed a penalty after a host of chances for Hibs, while Steven Whittaker knocked in a late free kick.

Dunfermline 1
Hearts 4

Michal Pospisil scored twice as Hearts kept pace with SPL leaders Celtic with a comfortable win at East End Park.

Hearts defender Steven Pressley fired home the opener from close range after Calum Elliot failed to finish from a Paul Hartley free-kick. Pospisil finished from a Robbie Neilson cross before Mark Burchill scored for Dunfermline from another close-range effort, set up by Greg Ross. But Pospisil headed the third and Rudi Skacel added the fourth from 12 yards.

Celtic 4
Kilmarnock 2

Celtic maintained their lead in the Scottish Premier League despite squandering a two-goal lead against a committed Kilmarnock.

A Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick and a Shaun Maloney penalty, after the striker was pulled down by James Fowler, put Celtic two goals ahead. But Stephen Naismith, pulled down by Stephen McManus, replied from the spot before Danny Invincible headed home. McManus headed Celtic ahead again and Maciej Zurawski fired the fourth.

Inverness 3 Livingston 0

Inverness demonstrated that their is life after manager Craig Brewster with a comfortable win over Livingston.

Striker Craig Dargo met a cross from Barry Wilson to cleverly head the home side into a 26th-minute lead. And Dargo added a second from the penalty spot on 57 minutes after David Mackay crudely brought Wilson down. Three minutes later, Dennis Wyness powered home a wonderful volley from 12 yards when he connected with a delivery from Roy McBain.

Rinaldo's Animations Patch

Rinaldo's Animations PatchThe excellent Sweetpatch Posse Developer Rinaldo is working on a new project, his Animations Patch. Animations are the movements made by the players during the game.

Beta version 0.3 is now available with a lot of new dribblings and contains:

  • 90° Bicycle Kick: make a cross, stay with your body perpendicular to the goal line and type D.
  • 180° Bicycle Kick: make a lob pass from the midfield, stay with the shoulders toward the the goal line and type D.
  • Chest pass: make a lob pass and type S before you receive the ball.
  • Fake Shot: two new movements added to the original one. Press together Z + D
  • New dribbling added
    • Forward Flick: Shift + Ahead Arrow while the ball is in movement
    • Quick Sole Touch + Other Internal Foot: Shift + Left Arrow (or Right Arrow) while the ball is in movement
    • Heel touch behind the other leg: Shift + Left Arrow (or Right Arrow) while the ball is in movement
    • Elastico: Shift + Left Arrow (or Right Arrow) while the ball is stopped
    • Double Touch and small Flick Ahead: Shift + Ahead Arrow while the ball is stopped

The described movements appear casually during the game in addition to the existing ones, so you could have to play several times before you see them. Rinaldo suggests to try in training mode first.

You can download beta version 0.3 at file.webalice.it (usr: rzocca pwd: GPM06). Be aware that after a certain number of downloads the file is automatically deleted, if you don't find anything be patient and try later, Rinaldo will reload it periodically.

English Premier League: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 2

English Premier League: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 2Chelsea spluttered to a tenth consecutive League win, coming from behind with goals by Hernán Crespo and Arjen Robben, but Robben got a second yellow card and was sent off for his celebration. (He is the first man sent off at Chelsea in the Premiership since the arrival of José Mourinho. Both bookings looked bad refereeing decisions).

  • 0-1: In the 12th minute when Arca’s cross from deep came in, Terry was stretched to head away from Le Tallec and the ball fell for Lawrence. He belted a low, unstoppable left footer inside Cech to give the bottom club the lead.
  • 1-1: Chelsea’s equaliser came in the 28th minute. Gallas cut back and crossed left-footed from the right, Cole almost on the goal-line beyond the goal but still in the six yard box, headed back, Gudjohnsen somehow didn’t get there but Crespo nodded in from two yards. It was his tenth goal of the season making him Chelsea’s equal second top scorer with Drogba.
  • 2-1: Chelsea still didn’t look the normal lubricated deal until the 69th minute when Robben got the ball back from Gallas, hit a 20 yard left-footer which deflected and shot in. It was reminiscent of his goal at Charlton. Robben celebrated by jumping the hoardings to go to the Chelsea fans, and extraordinarily referee Foye booked him again and sent him off.

For all Chelsea’s less than impressive display, the team managed ten shots on target, set a new club record of ten consecutive League wins and equalled the record of six consecutive away wins in all competitions.

Carling Cup - Semi Final 1st leg: Blackburn 1 Man United 1

Carling Cup - Semi Final 1st leg: Blackburn 1 Man United 1Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen struck a spectacular equaliser to leave the Carling Cup semi-final with Manchester United in the balance.

Louis Saha gave United the lead in the 29th minute, latching on to Ryan Giggs' pass to powerfully beat Brad Friedel. But Pedersen's rising drive five minutes later put Blackburn level.

United dominated possession in the second half, but resilient Blackburn held on to leave honours even for the second leg at Old Trafford.

Carling Cup - Semi Final 1st leg: Wigan 1 Arsenal 0

Carling Cup - Semi Final 1st leg: Wigan 1 Arsenal 0 Paul Scharner scored on his debut to earn Wigan victory in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal at the JJB Stadium.

The Austrian came off the bench and climbed highest to head home a Gary Teale cross 12 minutes from time. Wigan deserved their victory against a weakened and lifeless Arsenal side, who only threatened with an early Freddie Ljungberg shot that flew over the bar.

There were 53 minutes on the clock when the floodlights went out and plunged the ground into darkness, caused by a power failure in the town. The delay lasted around 15 minutes and when the players came back out Wigan seemed revitalised, ploughing forward in the hope of gaining a crucial goal.

On 78 minutes Teale found time and space down the right and with a looping centre he found Scharner, who rose high to power a header downwards and into the net past Almunia.

English Premier League: Maniche joins Chelsea

English Premier League: Maniche joins ChelseaChelsea have completed the loan signing of Portugal international midfielder Maniche. The 28 year-old joins until the end of the season from Dynamo Moscow. He has not played in European competition this season so is eligible for UEFA Champions League action.

Maniche (whose full name is Nuno Ricardo Oliveira Ribeiro) becomes the first player to have worked with José Mourinho at three different clubs. A product of the Benfica youth system, he was coached by Mourinho during the Chelsea manager’s nine-game spell in charge at the Lisbon club in 2000.

Prior to that, Maniche had spent three seasons on-loan at Alverca before returning to play for Benfica. In 2002 Mourinho took the midfielder to Porto where the two shared in domestic and European success.

Maniche was in the side that won the Portuguese League Championship, the Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup in 2003. The next season he scored two goals in the Champions League quarter-final against Lyon and played the whole game as Porto triumphed over Monaco in the Final. The domestic title was again won with Maniche scoring six times.

He made his international debut in 2003 and has been a regular since, playing all but three minutes of Portugal’s Euro 2004 campaign that ended with defeat in the Final. His long range shot in the semi-final against Holland was voted goal of the tournament and Maniche was also voted into the all-star squad of the tournament.

In the summer of 2005 he moved to Dynamo Moscow for a Russian record transfer fee of 16 million euros, along with Porto team-mate Costinha.

The switch to Chelsea is the second consecutive January transfer window that the club has strengthened the squad with a player from a Russian team. Last year Jiri Jarošik joined from CSKA Moscow.

English Premier League: West Ham 1 Chelsea 3

English Premier League: West Ham 1 Chelsea 3Frank Lampard scored his 14th goal of the season, Michael Essien was carried off and substitute Hernán Crespo limped off, but Chelsea won comfortably after allowing West Ham to equalise straight after half-time.

Chelsea have now won nine League games in a row, equalling the club record set earlier in the season.

  • 0-1: Lampard’s golden moment came in the 25th minute. Gérémi’s long throw wasn’t dealt with, Drogba challenging with two defenders, and the ball fell for Lampard to volley in from 15 yards at the near post. It was his first goal against West Ham since leaving them in 2001, and he raced away from his colleagues into space so he could just stand there and savour the home jeers. They had been intense every time he touched the ball from early on.
  • 1-1: It took West Ham just 24 seconds after the interval to restore unity. Reo-Coker on the right pulled the ball into the path of Harewood after Terry had cleared carelessly, and the centre-forward, one on one with Cech, shot through him. The goalkeeper made a good attempt to save but the ball bounced up and Harewood was first to it as it was going over the line to make sure it was in.
  • 1-2: With a minute to go to the hour Mourinho made his tactical change. Crespo replaced Duff and Chelsea went to two up front with Robben free behind. Immediately Robben fed Crespo who ran cleverly to be onside, rounded Carroll, barged Drogba out of the way who might have been offside and, falling, drove his ninth goal of the season, making him level with Drogba. From substitution to netting had taken under a minute.
  • 1-3: Gudjohnsen released Drogba behind Konchesky and he smashed a low 20 yarder across Carroll for his tenth goal of the season.

After four games in nine days, and despite another match in five days, Chelsea now have two off to recover and celebrate their maximum 12 points gained over the festive period.

English Premier League: Chelsea 2 Birmingham 0

English Premier League: Chelsea 2 Birmingham 0Chelsea are three-quarters of the way to a perfect Christmas and New Year programme after first-half goals from Hernán Crespo and Arjen Robben plus another clean sheet ended a momentous calendar year in winning style.

The last home game at Stamford Bridge in 2005 was dominated by the boys in blue and there should have been more goals, especially for Crespo, but as on Boxing Day against Fulham there was also the odd lapse at the back. It took two last-ditch clearances to keep the Chelsea goal intact for an eighth time in nine games.

José Mourinho again rang the changes as the games continue to come thick and fast, this time making five switches from the team that won in Manchester. If the tightness in defence was slightly compromised, the invention in attack was not.

  • 1-0: Chelsea jitters were settled by the opening goal. Crespo was again the predator supreme. This time he was exactly in the right spot when Taylor pushed out another shot, this time from Robben. The goal was Crespo’s eighth of the season.
  • 2-0: Thoughts that Chelsea may rue the chances wasted were banished three minutes before the break when the second goal went in. As with the opener, Chelsea moved the ball from right to left with Birmingham chasing shadows. Crespo chested Cole’s ball onto Gudjohnsen. Wide it went to Robben who slotted home calmly.

Chelsea failed to turn a comfortable win into a good one but the march of victories goes on – eight-in-a-row now in the Premiership, just one short of the nine-game run that opened the campaign. The one piece of bad news was the sight of William Gallas exiting the game in stoppage time with what appeared to be a hamstring concern.
