SFTLA PC Latest News

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

This Week's Headlines

Arsenal keep on impressing!!!!

Arsenal thrash early pace setters Real Madrid and keep proving that they are one of the teams to watch for whereas Feyenoord win again at Santos. On the other hand, PSV are still going downhill and lost 6-1 against a spirited Manchester United. It looks like the Dutch team are not getting enough attention from their manager who is busy with other issues as well.

Liverpool show their consistency and yet again hold another Division 1 favourite Blackburn to a draw. Meanwhile Chelsea look to take full advantage of these drawing scenarios and go third while no one was noticing by seeing off Walsall. In other news Valencia thrash near rivals Celtic and sit on second at the table, and as it stands, Division 1 looks to be the juiciest one of them all. On the other side Boca Juniors are finding their feet with a thrashing of Bayern Munic

In Division 2, Macclesfield are at the top while AC Milan Win a thriller against Benfica and keep the pressure up on them.

In Division 3, Dortmund cant stop Winning but can feel the breathe of a number of teams on their shoulders. Charlton manager does his father (Kotp) proud with a convincing Win at last and Middlesborough look impressive. Lazio are recovering from their bad spell with wins in both the League and the Cup.

Preview of Manchester City v Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteThe City of Manchester Stadium hosts the battle of the Blues on Saturday when Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea travel up north to take on a rejuvenated Manchester City.

Kevin Keegan was relieved to see City get their first win in the Barclaycard Premiership in fifteen matches last weekend, against Bolton, but believes that his job is still not safe, despite the fact that the traveling fans were chanting the manager's name when the final whistle went at the Reebok.

A win against Chelsea on Saturday would go a long way to easing Keegan's fears, but, while an optimist, the popular manager is a realist and knows how tough the challenge will be.

Chelsea may also approach the game with a fresh and more relaxed attitude after boss Claudio Ranieri dismissed his side's chances of winning the Barclaycard Premiership.

Following their 2-1 home defeat to the leaders Arsenal last weekend Chelsea dropped of the pace and Ranieri believes the nine-point margin is too great to close.

The Italian said: "There are 10 or 11 matches left but I think nine points is too much to make up, although we want to fight to close the gap because it's important to continue to build. We never gave up. Well done Arsenal but both teams played well and created chances, and we had chances when they had an extra man."

Chelsea will continue to battle but know a defeat against City would surly put an end to their title dream once and for all.

Stuttgart 0 Chelsea 1

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea maintained their 100 per cent away European record with an extraordinary win in Germany, courtesy of an own goal forced by a Glen Johnson cross.

Before taking the lead Chelsea had to be truly grateful to Carlo Cudicini who, despite not being able to take goal-kicks still, showed his wondrous agility with a seventh minute save.

The goal came in the 12th minute. Johnson received the ball in a tight situation from William Gallas wide on the halfway line, played a sharp one-two with Gérémi who gave an excellently weighted return, and crossed early behind the defence aiming for the cleverly running Eidur Gudjohnsen. Defender Fernando Meira, realising Gudjohnsen was in a marvellous goalscoring position, desperately intervened and slid in only to turn the ball past his goalkeeper at the near post.

Corners and free-kicks in the area were causing Chelsea trouble, but the unit stayed solid and began to win back possession. As half-time approached Stuttgart got frustrated and Chelsea won a series of corners, all taken expertly by Gérémi.

Extraordinarily when the final whistle went for a terrific Chelsea victory the winning side had no shots on target against the five of the losing side.

When FTL met Sweetpatch

Article by Nidge following our meeting on 16/12/2003 at Bude, Cornwall.

SFTLA LeagueFTL Manager/League founder - Nigel Morrison (Nidge), founded and got the FIFA Togga League (FTL) up running with the help of his brother Aubs and his mate Pimp from MSN Messenger. It was founded in April 2003 and had just the 1 league of 12 using the PC version of FIFA 2003. This then grow to 16 players and 2 divisions of 8 from all over the UK. The lads played there games and formed a solid but fun community and kept in touch through FTL - MSN Group and using MSN Messenger. They were great credit and still are to the FTL & SFTLA leagues.

Winty, one of lads who joined in the 1st season, was a great credit to the FTL by supporting the other lads with PC support and still played his games despite getting beat most weeks but had great humour bout it and hence was voted by the FTL community - Most Respected Player. Winty works with Dave Witts who is his boss and also Dave is the founder of the Sweetpatch website which has been going for over 4 years now and is seen worldwide. Dave Witts has always wanted to merge with a solid and reliable FIFA league and to work with. Hence Winty put forward the FTL to Dave and Sweetpatch and he took great interest and the two parties merged, providing webspace on his site and world wide coverage as well as support. The pics you see is where Nidge was invited down too Bude, Cornwall by Winty to meet Dave Witts.

Screenshots Larger image Larger image

Also added to the Sweetpatch FTL team was Nidge's good bud on MSN Messenger, who had been talking and playing FIFA for over a year is Kotp - Dave Edwards who joined the FTL also in the 2nd season and ended up winning the treble, but has vast FIFA experience and contacts by helping organise and playing in FIFA UK Cyber Games, which can lead to Euro and World Cyber Games. His ideas and experience is a great asset to the team and wanted to make Sweetpatch FTL into an academy and hold LAN tourny's and improve UK FIFA players and produce strong contenders for the likes of the Euro and World FIFA Cyber Games.

And there we have it - the Sweetpatch FTL Academy was formed.......

21 travel, but no Mutu

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri has taken 21 players to Germany for the knockout UEFA Champions League game at Stuttgart tonight. Adrian Mutu is missing with a thigh strain.

Carlo Cudicini, Damien Duff and Hernán Crespo who all missed the weekend defeat by Arsenal are in the squad and optimistic of being involved.

The 21 are: Carlo Cudicini, Neil Sullivan, Marco Ambrosio; Mario Melchiot, Glen Johnson, William Gallas, John Terry, Marcel Desailly, Robert Huth, Wayne Bridge, Celestine Babayaro; Scott Parker, Jesper Grønkjær, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard, Gérémi, Damien Duff, Joe Cole; Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Hernán Crespo.

Stuttgart play with a back four which includes two flying wing-backs, and a diamond, tight, midfield.

The flying full-backs are German internationals, No 2 Andreas Hinkel on the right and No 21 Philip Lahm are on the left. The defensive midfielder anchoring the diamond is the sole survivor from our European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1998, No 20 Zvonimir Soldo.

The strikers are both internationals, No 19 Imre Szabics of Hungary and No 22 Kevin Kurayani of Germany. Kurayani is Stuttgart’s top scorer this season.

Claudio Ranieri will have to decide whether to go with his own diamond as he did against Arsenal, or play wingers to push the Stuttgart wing-backs back.

Stuttgart is topped with a light covering of snow. The temperature was –1 degrees centigrade on arrival, and the sky was clear, the air fresh. Tonight the temperature is expected to be –6.

Chelsea v Arsenal build up

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri admits he is beginning to fear Chelsea are destined never to beat Arsenal. Chelsea took the lead at Highbury last weekend in the FA Cup fifth round but lost 2-1 to extend Ranieri's run of games without a win against the Gunners to 12.

That sequence has included seven defeats and Ranieri is desperate for a measure of revenge when the Barclaycard Premiership title chasers meet again at Stamford Bridge today.

Arsenal will be chasing their fourth straight win over the Blues to stretch their advantage over them at the top of the table to nine points - and Ranieri fears he is fated not to beat Arsene Wenger's men.

The Italian told Chelsea TV: "Arsenal are a very good team but I believe in when a team is good for you or not good for you. Look at Liverpool - when we go to Anfield we lose, when Liverpool come to Stamford Bridge we win. With Arsenal it is very, very strange - sometimes we play well without winning."

Let's face it, past Fifa games allowed you to either pinball pass your way to a score, or dribble past all the D and bury the shot. Fifa 2004 does not let you do this. The fact is, becoming a competitive player on Fifa 2004 will take some time and effort. Whether you have a job, school work or other responsibilities, you no doubt have only limited free time. You want to have fun, you want to play the game, not spend days and weeks just trying to figure out the details.

If you are still tracking with me, then the Virtual Playbook will be a great resource to you. It will help you overcome the learning curve quick in areas you haven't already, and improve your approach to playing the game at any level.

Grab your copy today and perhaps you could be the world's next FIFA champion.

Ronaldo Would Listen To Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteBrazilian striker Ronaldo has admitted he would listen to any offers, especially those from the Premiership, although he has also stressed he is happy at Real Madrid.

However, the comments could act as a green light for Chelsea, who are rumoured to be interested in luring the World Cup winner to Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old said: "When there is interest from other teams, you have to listen - especially when that interest comes from England and I've never played in the English league. I know there is interest from English clubs though, as yet, there's nothing concrete. Right now I'm happy at Real and love the club but I'd be foolish to dismiss any interest in me."

New Ranking Points for the Sweetpatch FTL Academy PC Leagues

SFTLA PC RankingsWant to see the entire SFTLA Teams ranked 1-40? The basic principle is that every time you play a match, your rating points will change, based on two main factors:

  1. The result - whether you won, drew or lost.
  2. The strength of the opposition (position in ranking table).

The way this works is that:

  • If you win, your rating will always go up - the stronger the opposition compared to you, the more your rating will go up.
  • If you lose, your rating will always go down - the weaker opposition compared to you, the more it will go down.
  • If you draw, your rating will move towards your opponent's rating - the bigger the difference between you, the more your rating will move.

Check this great alternative way of viewing the teams in the SFTLA at the new PC Rankings page.

This Week in the SFTLA PC League

The Pink EchoTo tie up with the release of Issue 3 of The Pink Echo today we have our weekly news update for you of the SFTLA PC League:

  • Cheltenham and their award winning manager sets the league alight with goals here, there everywhere.
  • Ajax gets the fragrance of what their new manager can do.
  • Premiership super starters play out a thrilling draw.
  • Feyenoord and Real Madrid both had superb starts to the season and were sat jointly on top of the Premiership table before they faced each other. A game of attack and counter attack saw these two excellent powerhouses draw 3-3 in an enthralling encounter.
  • Blackburn Rovers look to be the top team in Division 1, but are closely followed by Celtic who, after thrashing Bayern and Juve, fell to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Blackburn on the other hand, continue to impress being the only team in the division to win all games so far.
  • Giant killers of the season, Liverpool? Liverpool are surely branded giant killers this season with respective 1-1 draws with two promotion favourites Valencia and Celtic. They continue to impress, and with a similar result against Blackburn next week will throw the Division 1 top half wide open, can they do it, yet again?
  • Roma are performing very impressively in Division 2 but are closely followed by Newcastle. Although Newcastle are joint on top alongside the Romans, they are yet to prove their abilities as all their points came from default wins so far.
  • The Pink would like to take this opportunity to urge Division 2 players to play their matches on time so that the dreadful 2-0 default win situation does not arise this often.
  • Borussia Dortmund look to be an upcoming promise from Division 3. Early pacesetters in Division 3 are Borussia Dortmund. The young manager of the team has impressed critics and if we are to look out for rising talent from the bottom divisions, the current top of the Division 3 lad looks to be one to look out for.

Check out the full issue 3 of The Pink Echo and look forward to an interesting interview in issue 4 next week.

SFTLA Knock-Out Cup - Dortmund v Ipswich

SFTLA PC Knock-Out CupThese 2 teams had played in the league this season already with Dortmund scraping a 1 v 0 victory, so would the result be similar in the Cup?

Both teams started well but it was Ipswich who took the early ascendancy scoring 2 goals in 4 minutes in the 30th and 34th minutes. Firstly Counaga broke and fired past the keeper. Then almost straight form the ko Dortmund lost the ball and Armstrung followed up a shot from a colleague which the keeper saved but he made no mistake with the follow up.

At this point the German manager rolled up his sleeves and went for it. Half time came though with no reply from the Dortmund squad.

Whatever the Dortmund manager said at half time certainly seemed to work. The Germans came flying out of the blocks and on 50 minutes won a corner. Metzelder rose to head home and provide some hope.

Then on 77 minutes Koller had a shot well saved but man of the match Amoroso was there to fire home the rebound.

Up to the final whistle both teams had chances to wrap up this cup tie but the final whistle went and it was in to sudden death extra time.

Ipswich started the livelier and had a few chances but then Dortmund got their game back together and won a string of corners.

In the 116th minute of this awesome game Dortmund won another corner. Rosicky swung it in to the near post and Metzelder rose highest to head it against the inside of the post and in.

What a game, what a comeback from 2 v 0 down and Dortmund progress into the next round.

Fantastic game for the spectator and both managers should be proud of their teams performances.

Keep an eye on the Knock-Out Cup here as it progresses over the coming weeks.

Cheltenham (Reidy - current UK FIFA champion) have taken a firm grip of the Premiership at this early stage by scoring 12 goals and only conceding the 1 in the first 2 games and is flying high at the top. But this week faces his toughest test when he has too play Spurs (Kotp - last season's FTL Treble winners) who themselves look solid again this season. This game should be a cracker as these two players know each other and their games very well.

Real Madrid (Van) & Feyenoord (Kev), both have 100% records and had very good starts to the season with both having very tight defences. Ajax (JPM) who by their standards had a surprised defeat with Feyenoord on the opening day of the season made it up by defeating Inter by an amazing score of 10-1, but there were questions over Inters negative playing attitude.

Inter (Shaf), got their first victory of the season against Man U (Woody) who themselves got a great draw in week 3 against a flying scoring machine - Feyenoord. Will this lift Inter now after conceding an amazing 18 goals in their 2 games?

The 2 bottom teams clash in the Premiership this week and will be a confidence booster for both teams who ever claims a win and stay away from the dreaded 0 pts.

Division 1
Celtic (Mad Jock) have stamped their authority on the 1st division by claiming first position on goal difference but have to face Liverpool in week 3 which will be a very tough affair. Can they withstand the pressure. Blackburn (Colin) are looking steady in 2nd position and look very strong indeed.

Division 2
This division out of all 4 has been the slowest to develop into a real pattern due to postponed games and new managers taking over, but Roma (Andy) still lead the way and set the standards. New managers at AC Milan (Penfold) and Barca (Gaz) do look as if their gonna challenge Roma and the favourites Macclesfield (Bradders)

Division 3
This is has to be the closest of all divisions as 7 teams seem very close and on a level playing field and any of these teams could take the 4 possible promotion places but new kid on the block Dortmund (Witts junior - Dan) has the only 100% record and could well be the team to beat...

Chelsea take advantage as Man U lose

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea have decreased the gap with Manchester United for second position as the Londoners defeated Portsmouth while Manchester were shocked at Old Trafford by Middlesbrough.

Manchester came back from 0-2 down but suffered another goal in the final phase of the match to allow Chelsea to gain on them.

Juninho Paulista scored for Middlesbrough in both the 34th and 38th minute to silence the home crowd, but Ruud van Nistelrooy's goal in the last minute of the first half restored some hope for the Mancunians. Ryan Giggs even scored the equalizer in the 63rd minute but Middlesbrough struck again in the 80th minute through Joseph Desire Job for the final 2-3 win.

Meanwhile in the south of England, Portsmouth were not able to surprise Chelsea, who took the lead after 17 minutes had been played, with Scott Parker scoring his first goal for the Blues. Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo decided the match in the 79th minute making it 0-2.

With these results, the gap between Arsenal, who have 61 points after 25 matches, and Manchester, who have 56 points, has increased, while Chelsea are back in the race for second place with only one point less than Manchester United.

SFTLA PS2 Division 1 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

League leaders Real Sociedad travelled to Leverkusen in hopes to extend their lead at the top. After seeing golden opportunities missed by Nihat and Lee Chun Soo, Leverkusen managed to push up the field and earn themselves a corner. A keeping blunder gifted Nowotny with an unmissable chance and Leverkusen took the lead.

The 1st half ended 1-0. Real Sociedad continued to test the Leverkusen defence and keeper throughout the 2nd half but some of the chances missed were unforgivable. With the pressure building Real Sociedad got the luck they deserved with a Kovacevic penalty in the 86th minute, but they couldn't finish another good chance after, and so an exciting game ended 1-1.

Hasselbaink keeps Chelsea title bid on track

Visit Chelsea mini siteJimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's 99th Premiership goal was good enough to give Chelsea a 1-0 win over London rivals Charlton here at Stamford Bridge that kept their Premiership title challenge alive.

Hasselbaink's first-half penalty ensured that Chelsea remained third, four points behind champions Manchester United and six adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Defeat for Charlton meant Alan Curbishley's men missed out on the chance to regain the fourth and last Champions League place after Newcastle's win over Leicester on Saturday.

SFTLA PC Leagues Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC LeagueThe SFTLA PC Leagues are now approaching their Third Week so it's time to catch up with all the latest information on what is happening in what it probably the biggest Online League Tournament in the World.

SFTLA PREMIERSHIP

Last Season Division Two Runner up Kevin who is Player/Manager of Feyenord finds himself sitting pretty at the Dizzy Heights of The SFTLA Premiership Table . They are certainly looking an impressive outfit with Two Victories and 8 Goals bagged and their defence is looking a very tough cookie to crack as only 1 Goal has been scored against them.

Last Season Treble Winners Kotp and Spurs have had a decent start also and find themselves sitting in the chasing pack along with current UK Champion Adam Reid and Cheltenham and it's surely just a matter of time before one of these Big Predators makes a move for that Top Spot.

PSV Player/Manager Hez who was right amongst the Top Boys last Season finds himself bottom at this early stage and has himself admitted that he is finding this version of Fifa a lot more difficult than he probably imagined. I'm sure we will see PSV start climbing the table soon and I really can't see this huge Club being in the Danger Zone of Relegation come the Final Weeks , but only time will tell.

SFTLA DIVISION ONE

The mighty Celtic are riding high here and look a very serious contender for the Title with Two Impressive Victories and an amazing Ten Goals bagged and with just One Goal conceded they certainly have the early signs of Title Contenders , can anyone stop them .... I believe there is, Deadcell Player/Manager of Blackburn who themselves have had an impressive start to the Season are the Team who I believe that could put a spanner in the Celtic Title Hunt. This of course will remain to be seen and when these Two Giants of Soccer meet you can expect a very explosive affair. Other contenders who could upset these Two would probably consist of Valencia and Liverpool who again have both started their seasons well and remain unbeaten at this early stage.

SFTLA DIVISION TWO

This would be the only Division where I would go on record to say that it's over before its began. Macclesfield Player/Manager Bradders is the outfit that will certainly win this Division and I can't really see any of the others even getting close, as of yet Macclesfield are yet to play which is about the only good news that the rest of the Teams in the Division have.Barcelona and Newcastle would be my picks of the rest of the bunch who could possibly grab a vital promotion place come the end of the Season.

SFTLA DIVISION THREE

Another Strong contender here in the form of Parma and Player/Manager Leon and with an impressive start to their Season look a class outfit at this early stage. The Witts Family make their Fifa Debut here and the two younger Witts, Jay & Dan have both started well with victories, unfortunately Daddy Witts finds himself propping up the Table at this early stage and i'm sure his Boys have had an excellent week in ribbing their Dad. Kotp Junior (Luke) also made his Fifa Debut and he has also started well by winning his first fixture.

That's about it for now from the SFTLA PC Leagues, but we will continue to keep you updated on all the action as and when it happens.

SFTLA PS2 Division One Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 League

This match only ever looked like a Leverkusen win after their dominating performance brushed aside a lacklustre effort from a Santos team who looked more interested in the pie stand at half time than anything happening on the football pitch.

Goals from Nowotny, Basturk and Neuville sealed the game for the visitors in the first half and although Diego pulled one back for Santos from the penalty spot just after the hour it wasn't enough to spark a comeback and it finished 1-4.

A second strike for Neuville with four minutes left on the clock sealed the game and three points for Leverkusen
