Carling Cup Final Preview

Carling Cup Final PreviewAs I am away for a few days now I wanted to post my Carling Cup Preview in advance.

William Gallas is Chelsea's main doubt for Sunday's Carling Cup final against Liverpool, but Damien Duff and Didier Drogba have been passed fit and will start up front alongside either Joe Cole or Eidur Gudjohnsen.

If Gallas passes a late fitness test on a groin injury, Mourinho will keep faith with the same defence but, if not, Glen Johnson looks set to replace him, with Paulo Ferreira shifting to left-back.

Tiago could be rested, with Jiri Jarosik among the contenders to replace the midfielder, Petr Cech will start in goal with Carlo Cudicini suspended, while Wayne Bridge, Scott Parker, Robert Huth and Arjen Robben are out injured.

Mourinho, who named Barcelona's side as well as his own starting line-up at the Nou Camp on Tuesday, was mischievously asked to name Liverpool's side for Sunday's 45th League Cup final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Mourinho suggested that the Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, would opt to play Fernando Morientes and Milan Baros together or Morientes as a lone striker with "someone in behind him.''

On Chelsea's team news, Mourinho revealed that William Gallas, who recovered from a groin injury to face Barcelona, was their "biggest doubt''.

Mourinho added that Damien Duff was "OK'' and that Didier Drogba would be fit to face the Reds.

He confirmed that Duff and Drogba would definitely play on Sunday and his main selection decision was between Joe Cole and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will return from his midweek European suspension to lead the Merseysiders out against Chelsea.

Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino, who were cup-tied for the Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen, will also be available to Benitez for selection.

But Benitez thinks it is unlikely another Spanish import, Josemi, will have recovered in time from the groin injury which has ruled him out since mid-December.

Benitez who, like Mourinho, will be leading his team to his first domestic final since taking charge in the summer has admitted: "When I arrived in Liverpool I said the challenge was to win trophies, so if we can win this one it will be fantastic. But we are thinking about more than this one, our idea is that this will be the first stone in the wall as we start to build something. This could be the best moment to play Chelsea. They are favourites and we know they have spent a lot of money on players and are having a very good season. But now, after losing two games in a week it could be the best moment for us to be playing them. We will see. I like to play against good teams and Chelsea are the best because they are top of the league, so it is a challenge for me, one that I like.''

The Spaniard hopes the experience of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Morientes will help the Reds do what they have been unable to do in their two previous meetings with Chelsea in the Premiership this season after Joe Cole scored the winning goals in the two previous meetings between the clubs.

"It is important for us to have Gerrard back, he has the right mentality for winning trophies. Morientes is the same, he has won so many trophies with Real Madrid so it is important for us that we have these two players back because they have had a rest and were not playing in the Champions League. They will be fresh and certainly not tired.''

Enjoy this game on Sunday and let's hope it's not 3 defeats on the bounce.

UEFA Champions League: Barcelona 2 Chelsea 1

UEFA Champions League: Barcelona 2 Chelsea 1Today is not a good day as a Chelsea fan to celebrate my 40th birthday after watching last night as Chelsea lost a half-time lead and Didier Drogba to a controversial red card ten minutes into the second-half of this pulsating Champions League encounter.

After defending for long spells on 32 minutes Terry blocked a fierce Deco shot, Lampard finally found the time to turn with the ball and hit a long pass over Barça’s defence, Duff raced up the right and pulled it back for Drogba, and Belletti in trying to cover hit the ball into his own net. Chelsea hadn’t had a shot and were in the lead.

Two minutes later that should have been doubled when Drogba was put away by Makelele, but one on one with Valdéz he screwed the ball wide.

At the start of the 2nd half Drogba was whistled up again after tangling with Albertini and given a clear warning not to foul again. But ten minutes into the second-half he went for a Duff cross with goalkeeper Valdéz, colliding with him, and both went down. Frisk got out the yellow and red card and sent him off. Drogba was furious. In the Premier League it would probably not even have been a foul.

But Chelsea had more rhythm now, and the crowd was delighted when Guily was withdrawn after 63 minutes – he had got no change at all out of Gallas – and replaced by the sprightly López. His all-action entry led firstly to a Deco shot which was just wide and then, after three minutes, he planted the equaliser when Ronaldinho made the breakthrough pass into the area.

Suddenly Barcelona were everywhere again and this was going to be a long last 25 minutes. Johnson replaced Cole and Chelsea had Tiago and Makelele shoring up the middle with Johnson wide right and Lampard wide left. Now Barça had shots raining in on Cech’s goal from everywhere. His handling was good.

But there was nothing he could do when López mishit a shot across goal and Eto’o swooped to strike home. The home team were ahead and the crowd went ballistic. Just seven minutes had passed since the equaliser.

When the final whistle went Chelsea hadn't managed any shots on target but a respectable result. And what would have happened if the referee hadn’t branded red?

Never mind, it wont upset what has been an excellent 40th birthday so far. Let's hope the Carling Cup brings us our first silverware for 5 years on Sunday.

The Showdown - Who Rules

The Showdown - Who RulesIn the build up to the launch of FIFA Street, nikefootball.com are talking strictly street moves, showcased by the world's freshest talent - including you, if you dare.

Judge or be judged. Promote, relegate or eliminate. The crowd will decide who makes The Chosen Few.

It's rough, tough, freestyle justice. There's no official rulebook, and no referee to wipe your nose or turn a blind eye. Rule or be ruled, it's your choice.

Once you're done with the street, go to Showcase and see what the Pro Maestros are wearing. New Tiempo gear will add a fresh dimension to your playmaking.

Finally, for those who only want fast access to the best players, downloads and latest gear, nikefootball.com is now available in a low-bandwidth version.

UEFA Champions League: Tactics which suit Chelsea

UEFA Champions League: Tactics which suit ChelseaJosé Mourinho put his tactics for the game in Barcelona down to the players available rather than the team he is facing.

"I am not going to change the system because of them, I am going to change it because of the injuries we have. We’ll play another system, we’ll play without wingers like Robben and Duff. We still have very good players."

He reiterated that he expects Nuno Morais and Steven Watt to be on the bench. He also restated his love for Barcelona and lamented their barren times. "I would say in the last six years of my life I have progressed a lot in my life and you haven’t. I have changed my position and improved my life and you obviously haven’t. I regret. This is a club that I love. I wish them to win everything but nothing against us."

Barcelona have not won any trophies since 1999 when Mourinho was still at the club.

Chelsea will play with two players one booking away from a suspension, Marteja Kezmana and Alexey Smertin. Neither are due to start. Barcelona’s Rafael Marquez is also one booking away from a suspension.

FA Cup 5th Round : Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0

FA Cup 5th Round : Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0 A bad day at the office as Wayne Bridge was injured and taken to hospital, Carlo Cudicini was sent off and misses the Carling Cup Final through suspension as Chelsea went out of the Cup.

The whole of the second-half was played with ten men following a triple half-time substitution and an injury to Bridge in the first minute of the second-half. Cudicini was red carded in stoppage time for bringing down Ameobi when he was the last man.

Newcastle’s goal came early. They worked the ball from right to left after three minutes, Robert was unchallenged as he crossed, and Kluivert climbed above Gallas to thunder a close-range header into the top corner.

As the fourth official signalled five minutes stoppage time, Carvalho was booked for pulling down Kluivert just outside the area. Within a couple of minutes Ameobi got through again and Cudicini’s reaction was something he couldn’t prevent himself from doing. He was dismissed with an apology by Halsey.

Glen Johnson went in goal and blocked Robert’s vicious free-kick with a valiant outstretched leg. The only good news was that the completed game allows John Terry to play the Carling Cup Final.

FIFA Street Previews

FIFA Street PreviewsWe also check out today some previews from recognised websites of the forthcoming FIFA Street game.

Check out the following selection:

  • 3D Avenue
The whole game revolves around the momentum of players. You can't really score a goal by running up and shooting at the keeper, that’s not what this game will be about. Due to the fact all the players featured in the game are some of the best in the world, tricks need to be used. (Click here for the full preview)
  • Game Informer
The tricks players can pull off are very slick and not only are they useful to get around players, they're necessary to get the opportunity to get Gamebreakers. Just like other Street games, there's a Gamebreaker which you can execute once you've pull off a number of trick moves, and air passes and have filled the Gamebreaker meter. Once deployed, your shot is extremely powerful, and most likely destined to score a goal. (Click here for the full preview)
  • GameSpot
Most players will take directly to the rule-the-street mode, as this is where the game's real meat lies. Essentially a career mode, rule the street allows you to create a player and team from scratch so you can work your way up the ranks by playing a number of pickup and tournament games on the 10 global street venues found in the game, from New York City, to Amsterdam, to Rio de Janeiro. (Click here for the full preview)
  • TeamXbox
The other element that is very different in FIFA Street than it is in a regular football match is scoring. Instead of 0-0 tie after 0-0 tie, FIFA Street is set up for scoring pretty much every trip down the pavement, grass, or dirt. (Click here for the full preview)

Excited? Now check out our cut prices above in the "Features in Focus" section and then pre-order the game directly from our brand new FIFA Street Shop.

Deserved medal for Mourinho

Deserved medal for MourinhoJosé Mourinho's achievement in leading FC Porto to successive victories in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League will be recognised by an award from the Portuguese government.

Mourinho will receive a national medal for sporting merit, the Colar de Honra ao Mérito Desportivo. He will travel to Lisbon to collect the honour at a date yet to be confirmed.

The 42-year-old coach, now in charge at Chelsea FC, guided his Porto team to victory against Celtic FC in the UEFA Cup final of 2002/03, before they made it a famous double by beating AS Monaco FC in last season's Champions League final.

And hopefully he will add the English Premiership this season to make it a hat-trick of successive years!

Stars Shine at Tsunami Match

Stars Shine at Tsunami MatchA marvellous night of entertainment which ended 6-3 in favour of a team led by Ronaldinho against Andriy Shevchenko's XI offered a fitting show of football's overpowering wish to aid those affected by the Tsunami disaster in Asia.

On a bitterly cold night in Barcelona, 40,000 fans gathered for the Football For Hope match and were treated to a festival of soccer by a glittering group of world stars. The result was an irrelevance, the evening was of great significance for football in general as the world's great players took time, gave generously of their talent and made a statement in so doing.

Liverpool 0
Liverpool's hopes of closing the gap in the race for a Champions League spot were dealt a massive blow as goals from Walter Pandiani and Julian Gray sealed victory for Birmingham City.

English Premier League: Everton 0 Chelsea 1

English Premier League: Everton 0 Chelsea 1Chelsea went 12 points clear at the top of the League, if temporarily, thanks to Eidur Gudjohnsen’s 11th goal of the season, but it was a long battle against Everton’s ten men.

Just seven minutes had gone when Everton were reduced to ten men. Beattie, chasing Gallas who was following the ball as it moved for a goal-kick, jumped on the defender and appeared to head butt him twice. Referee Riley, running just behind, flashed the red card without delay. It was extraordinary and inexcusable by the former Southampton striker.

The breakthrough came on 69 minutes when Gallas flicked a Ferreira cross on to the bar and Gudjohnsen had a simple net-in. There were no great celebrations. ‘Job being done, on with the last 20 minutes,’ it seemed. Or maybe it was tiredness. Or maybe it was ‘About time too!’

When the final whistle went Chelsea were camped in Everton’s defending corner. Another northern outpost had been conquered. The team and staff celebrated with the fans on the far side of the pitch from the dressing rooms.

And don’t overlook a tenth consecutive Premiership clean sheet.

English Premier League: Chelsea 0 Manchester City 0

English Premier League: Blackburn 0 Chelsea 1Chelsea have dropped their first league points for two months as Manchester City became the first team to stop José Mourinho’s side from finding the net in two games this season.

The point the visitors gained owed much to out-of-favour England goalkeeper David James. At times he rode his luck with saves that dropped back into the danger area but crucially he was in the way of everything Chelsea could throw at him. At the death he pulled off a wonder save to preserve the hard-earned stalemate.

It was deep, deep into the additional minutes when hope had just about gone, Chelsea won a free-kick midway inside the City half. The kick came in, Terry won the second ball with a header that oozed determination and when it fell to Lampard, the shot was as sweet as he would have wished. James somehow reacted and pulled off a diving save as good as you are likely to see all season.

There was no time for another Chelsea chance. The marvelous eight game winning run was at an end.

English Premier League: Blackburn 0 Chelsea 1

English Premier League: Blackburn 0 Chelsea 1Chelsea went 11 points clear at the top of the Premiership thanks to Arjen Robben’s goal and Petr Cech’s penalty save, and equalled Arsenal’s Premiership record of eight consecutive clean sheets.

But in a frankly dirty game Robben was injured soon after scoring. A defiant and ecstatic José Mourinho took his team to the travelling fans at the final whistle and made them throw their shirts to the crowd. It was the final strong gesture of a muscular performance.

The goal took only four minutes to arrive. Duff had won a corner in the first minute and Terry was running off a knock from a particularly lunging tackle after Makelele had lost possession. Lampard hit a counter-attacking ball up to Gudjohnsen who flicked a wonderful cushion header for Robben to take outside Neill at full pace and smack across Friedel into the far corner for his ninth goal of the season.

A particularly physical challenge by Mokoena on Robben followed, and mysteriously referee Rennie gave no foul. Terry had worked his knock off but Robben couldn't and after 11 minutes was replaced by Cole.

Cech claimed the Premier League clean sheet record, overtaking Peter Schmeichel after four minutes for the longest Premier League time without conceding.

Too often the defending was more uncertain than recently, and just past the half hour Rennie pointed to penalty spot when Savage went down under Ferreira’s challenge having run across him. Chelsea were furious claiming Savage had dived, but there had been the minimum of contact.

Dickov slammed the penalty to Cech’s left and the big goalkeeper dived with incredible reflexes to make a superlative parry. He relaunched himself at the loose ball, Dickov lashing a kick into his ribs and forcing lengthy treatment. He wasn't booked.

Chelsea seemed prepared to dig in and win ugly. That’s what they did. It left the top of the Premiership looking mighty pretty.
