Palermo will miss World Cup cause of injury

Villarreal's striker Martin "El Loko" Palermo finished the season due to a weird injury.

Palermo scored a goal against Levante in the Spanish cup, and ran to celebrate with the crowd, he hang up on the fence, but the fence fell on his leg after the crowd pressure on it.

Palermo broke two bones in his left leg, and will miss the World Cup in Korea and Japan.

Villarreal doctor said: "It looks worst then we firstly thought, the wall crashed on him. I don't know how much time exactly it will take him to recover, but it will be more then 5 months for sure"

Palermo's injury is a great lost for Argentina national team and to all football fans around the world, who won't see him in the Mondial.

Fowler to Leeds

Leeds United have agreed a fee with Liverpool for striker Robbie Fowler.

The fee is believed to be around £11million and he will begin talks with Leeds today and will undergo a medical.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Leeds have been given permission to speak to the player. The deal has not been done, though. It's now up to Robbie to discuss personal terms."

Fowler To Leeds

Fowler's Anfield future has been in doubt for some months after it became clear he was no longer a member of Gerard Houllier's first choice line-up.

Leeds manager David O'Leary is a huge fan of the controversial England international and appears to have held out for a price that suits both parties.

Earlier, O'Leary stated: "If a player does become available at the right price for us we will always be interested. We may have to wait for players, like Seth Johnson, who we paid initially £7m for, not £9m.

"We will spend what we think is right and I will wait to buy at good value prices. That will be our policy and that will be how we do our business.

Munich wins the Toyota cup

One extra time goal by Samuel Kuffour was enough to give the World Club Cup for European Champions Bayern Munich in Japan.

The Ghanaian international scored five minutes into the second additional period to settle an ill-tempered affair at Tokyo's National Stadium, in which Boca Juniors were reduced to ten men.

Kuffour pounced on a loose ball to score from close range after the Argentinian defence failed to clear a corner from substitute Ciriaco Sforza.

Bayern missed a number of opportunities to capitalise on their numerical advantage in the second half after Boca striker Marcelo Delgado was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for diving in first-half stoppage time.

Boca, last year's World Club Cup winners, wasted a clear-cut chance to open the scoring in the 30th minute when Guillermo Schelotto dispossessed Kuffour and fed Delgado, who contrived to miss his kick with just Oliver Kahn to beat from eight yards.

Overall, this 1-0 win over South American champions, Boca Juniors, gives Munich the title "best club in the world".

Boca Juniors Vs. Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's manager, Ottmar Hitzfeld, has warned South American champions Boca Juniors that his side are comming to "make history" in the Toyota Cup.

The German and European champions only arrived in Japan on Monday morning after Saturday's disappointing 0-0 draw at home to lowly FC Nuremberg, but Hitzfeld denied jet-lag would be a factor in the annual fixture at Tokyo's National Stadium.

"We are here to write a new chapter in Bayern's history. Arriving late obviously puts us at a disadvantage but I think we are experienced enough to handle the situation," he said.

The Argentinian club, Boca Juniors, who beat Real Madrid 2-1 last year to bring the world club cup back to South America for the first time since 1994, arrived in Japan last Wednesday.

Bayern, who last won the Intercontinental Cup under the old two-leg format in 1976, will be missing eight squad members through injury, including German internationals Stefan Effenberg, Mehmet Scholl, Jens Jeremies and Alexander Zickler.

"While our injury list doesn't help, at this level games are decided by a moment of skill or one mistake. We have strikers who can win games if they are given a sniff of goal." said Hitzfeld.

Toyota Cup

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn also stressed that victory over the defending champions would give Bayern a huge lift in their current Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns.

"The world club cup title carries a lot of prestige. If we win it, we have the right to call ourselves the best team in the world. It has been 25 years since Bayern won so we know how important it is." said Kahn.

But Boca's manager, Carlos Bianchi, insisted that his new-look team would not be overawed by Bayern.

"Bayern have a lot of foreign players and don't play like a typical German team. They are a cosmopolitan team with a lot of individual flair but our players are in top shape and we are confident about our chances." said Bianchi.

Viduka to quit national team

Leeds United’s striker, Mark Viduka, has threatened to quit international football after Australia exit of the World Cup to Uruguay.

"I don't know if I'm going to back up, it's exhausting, it's mentally exhausting," he said after they lost 3-1 aggregate play-off defeat in Montevideo, the third successive time they have missed out on a World Cup place in a play-off.

"The whole two-game thing just kills us," added Viduka, who also reckons that Australia have been treated harshly by FIFA after winning their qualifying group and an earlier play-off.

Viduka To Quit International Team

"We have such an unfair route to qualify," Viduka moaned. "I mean, Uruguay lost about 10 games in their group and we've lost one but we're the ones who are out. I'll probably go back to concentrating on club football."

Barthez gifts to Arsenal

It ain't Christmas yet, but Fabian Barthez keep on giving gifts to who ever who asks.

Two bad mistakes by Barthez in the last 10 minutes at gifted Arsenal the points and Thierry Henry two goals as The Gunners beat Manchester United 3-1 at Highbury.

Both players had their performances re-evaluated by the five minutes of madness that saw Henry go from sinner to saint, and Barthez lose his man-of-the-match tag and pick up his mantle of hapless keeper.

The first mistake came when the French goalkeeper fluffed his clearance from six-yards but only succeeded in kicking the ball to Henry's legs, who kept his cool as always and slipped a low shot into the net.

Then with five minutes to go, Barthez raced to beat Henry to Vieira's through ball, but let the ball slip through his hands, giving the Arsenal striker the simple task of filling the empty goal.

United Lost Again To Arsenal

United had barely got out of their own half in the opening spell, but when they finally did it proved to be decisive. They worked the ball through the midfield area before Mikael Silvestre was freed on the left, where he passed Ashley Cole with ease before his cut-back was fired home by Paul Scholes from seven yards.

Three minutes after the start of the second half the Gunners were on level terms when Gary Neville gifted the ball to Pires, and the Frenchman ran at the heart of the United defence before playing a slide-rule pass to Freddie Ljungberg, who beat Barthez with a sublime chip.

Henry was to miss a golden opportunity after he linked-up superbly with substitute Dennis Bergkamp, only to crash his shot straight at Barthez.

United were defending desperately at this point, and seemed happy to hoof the ball clear, as Arsenal threw everything at them.

Then came the crazy five minutes, that gifted Arsenal a deserved victory. Ljungberg could have added a fourth, but was denied by a fine save by Barthez.

England Premier League review

Newcastle kept up the pressure on the Premiership leaders on Saturday by moving up to third in the table with a nervy 1-0 victory over strugglers Derby at St James' Park.

With the top five at the start of the day's play not playing until this evening, they took full advantage by securing their fourth home win of the season to jump three places.

Derby started well and had the better of the early exchanges but against the run of play the home side took the lead after 30 minutes.
Frenchman Laurent Robert, who came from French outfit Paris St Germain, went storming into the Derby penalty area only to be hauled down by Chris Riggott and the referee pointed to the spot.

Former England striker Alan Shearer, who missed a penalty at Fulham last week, made no mistake this time, rifling the ball past Mart Poom. Fabrizio Ravanelli could have levelled matters but the Italian's spot-kick, brilliantly saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given.

Derby fought back in the second half but despite plenty of possession could not make the breakthrough.

Southampton won for the first time at their new St Mary's Stadium with a 1-0 victory over Charlton.

James Beattie, who missed a hatful of first-half chances, produced a superb cross which Latvian international Marian Pahars powerfully headed past a helpless Dean Kiely five minutes after the interval.

Premier League Review

Tottenham move up to sixth place after beating West Ham 1-0 in a fiercely-contested London derby at Upton Park where Les Ferdinand scored the decisive goal.

Simon Davies crossed from the right and former Chelsea midfielder Gustavo Poyet's brave header was tipped onto the post by former Liverpool's David James but he could not prevent Ferdinand from tapping in the rebound in the 50th minute.

Gustavo Poyet was unable to play on after a clash of heads and promptly left the field.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson watched Chelsea draw 0-0 at home to Blackburn, the Blues' eighth Premiership draw of the season.

Chelsea fans, unhappy with some of manager Claudio Ranieri's curious tactical decisions, chanted the name of former boss Gianluca Vialli in protest as they struggled to break down the Rovers defence.

Leicester, who have won just three of their last 24 Premiership games, were held 0-0 by Everton while early pace-makers Bolton played out a goaless draw at home to Fulham.

The top of the table will be done when Arsenal and Manchester United lock horns at Highbury today while title hopefuls Leeds welcome Aston Villa to Elland Road.

Also today, Liverpool, who lost their opening phase two Champions League match to Barcelona on Tuesday, entertain Sunderland and Ipswich, buoyant after their 1-0 win over Italian giants Inter Milan in their UEFA Cup third round, first leg tie on Thursday, travel to Middlesbrough.

Wenger wanna be Ferguson

Wenger, The Highbury boss, who has yet to officially sign a new contract, has been the subject of much speculation of late.

But, ahead of the Gunners' crucial Premiership game against Manchester United on Sunday, he has allayed fears that he may leave when his current contract expires in June.

Asked if he could categorically state that he would be in charge of Arsenal next season, Wenger said: "Yes, of course. My commitment to this club has always been clear. Perhaps I am from a different generation, but I don't need to sign something - if I give my word, it's my word."

And he even revealed that he hopes to remain Arsenal manager for as long as United boss Ferguson has ruled at Old Trafford.

Wenger added: "I have a vision for this club. I want to help them move into a new stadium when this club can become one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Effenberg attacks Beckham

Bayern Munich's midfielder, Stefan Effenberg, goes out against David Beckham following Tuesday's Champions League clash with Manchester United, calling his performance 'dreadful'.

Effenberg came in for abuse from the Olympic Stadium support as he was substituted midway through the second half of the 1-1 draw.

But he claims that Beckham's showing was far worse, and less than worthy of a man nominated for World Footballer of the Year.

"Beckham was dreadful," ,Effenberg told the Kicker magazine, "He made so many bad passes. If that had been me, the crowd would never have stopped booing. And he's supposed to be a candidate for 'World Footballer of the Year'? Give me a break!

"There were 11 players on each side, it wasn't Effenberg versus Beckham. If that had been the case we would have won 1-0.

Effenberg Against Beckham

Effenberg is no stranger to controversy, and a run-in with Germany fans at the World Cup Finals in 1994 led to a self-imposed exile from international football.

And he says that Bayern officials such as "the Kaizer" Franz Beckenbauer are responsible for the ill-feeling towards him after publicly criticising his contributions.

"I know a thing or two about soccer and I cannot understand why people started whistling the second time I touched the ball," Effenberg said.

"Maybe these people have other problems and they're letting their frustrations out on me. On top of that, I think the fans are whipped up against me."

More European injuries

Beside Barcelona's Luis Enrique and Manchester's Ryan Giggs, all around Europe the amount of injured players just get bigger and bigger.

Munich's Hassan Salihamicic is out for about 2 months cause of a knee injurie.

Arsenal would have to play with it's third goalkeeper, the 21-years-old, Stuart Tylor, After both David Seaman and his replacemeant, Richard Wright are injured.

Also Marcus Stewart and Finidi George will miss Ipswich's UEFA cup match against Inter Milan through an injury.

Posted by Shlomy - Please post your Comments/Feedback here (0)

Vieri and Ronaldo won't play against Ipswich

Ronaldo and Christian Vieri have not travelled to Ipswich for Inter Milan's third round Uefa Cup tie.

Inter's coach, Hector Cuper, has decided to let the two mega-strikers stay in Milan in an effort to improve their fitness ahead of Sunday's Serie A match against Fiorentina.

But even without the club's two star players, the Italians will be confident of proving too strong for George Burley's side in the first leg.

Ipswich's proud home European record of 27 games undefeated, is in grave danger, ironically because the club are missing their two leading strikers.

Still even without Ronaldo and Vieri, Ipswich must be aware of the mega-scorrer Mohamad Kallon and the turkish forward Hakan Sukur.

Giggs out for 2 months

Manchester United's left winger, Ryan Giggs, suffers an injury which will take him out for 2 months.

Also Barcelona's Luis Enrique who has injured in the game against Liverpool, will be out for 5 months, it's a big lost for Barcelona since Enrique is an important player and got no decent replacement.

Champions League

Liverpool lost 1-3 against Barcelona, Galatasaray drew 1-1 with Roma, Munich have also drew 1-1 with Manchester and Boavista won 1-0 over Nantes.

Liverpool assistant manager, Phil Thompson, still believes the club can qualify from Group B despite suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Barcelona.

The magnificent Michael Owen had given Liverpool the lead, but goals from Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochemback and Marc Overmars ensured Barcelona claimed the three points.

"It's the first game in the group and we know how things can change,", said Thompson, "Teams can get beaten in their first game and still qualify and that's what we'll be aiming for. I thought we were magnificent, the lads have played against a very good team."

Champions League Day 1 Second

Another english team who didn't won was Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that an individual error denied Manchester United a memorable victory in Munich's Olympic Stadium.

Ruud van Nistelrooy gave the english champions the lead but Paulo Sergio tied the scores three minutes from time, following a slip by Mikael Silvestre.

Champions League Results
Bayern Munich 1 v 1 Manchester United.......Galatasaray 1 v 1 Roma.......Boavista 1 v 0 Nantes.......Liverpool 1 v 3 Barcelona

Feguson said: "It was one slip, but Mikael made our goal and it was a fantastic performance by him. Despite that, it was a very good second-half performance from the players and I'm very pleased with that. It's a decent result."

He added he thought his side had deserved the three points, before adding that he was happy with the end result.

"We deserved our victory to be honest. But the most important thing is the performance. Ruud had a bit of sickness this morning so he's done as well to last as long as he did and score an important goal for us."

Hapoel Tel-Aviv 2 v 1 Lokomativ Moscow

After droping the turkish Gaziantepspor and the english Chelsea, Hapoel Tel-Aviv goes on with her UEFA Cup journey.

The russian Lokomativ Moscow, who dropped from the Champions League into the UEFA Cup, faced the first leg against Hapoel in Tel-Aviv in Israel.

Hapoel attacked most parts of the game, but only manage to score at the 43' minute. The second half was also opened with Hapoel attacking Lokomativ's goal, but the russians with a single attack, manage to score when Izmailov shot a great shot into Shavit Elimelech's net.

Few minutes later Hapoel's striker Milan Ostrec was fouled and a panelty kick was called. Shimon Gershon, who scored the penalty against Chelsea, failed this time to score into Nigmantulin's net, and left the score still at 1-1.

Hapoel 2-1 Lokomativ

Lokomativ were dangerous in another fast breack and a kick which only stopped at the cross-bar.

On the other side, Yossi Abuksis free-kick was also stopped by the cross-bars. At the 88' minute, Hapoel's defender, Asi Domb, roll the ball in after a mix in the box to set the score on 2-1 for Tel-Aviv.

In injury time, Lokomativ's Cherbechenko was sent off after he injured Hapoel's winger, Ilan Bachar.

Lokomativ trusting the freezing cold of Russia to help them beat Hapoel Tel-Aviv on the second leg, but still a though game is expected.

Big step for Australia

Kevin Muscat was transformed from villian to hero as he scored a late penalty to give Australia an advantage in the World Cup play-off against Uruguay.

Muscat who was heavily criticised after the recent friendly against France for a tackle that seriously injured Christophe Dugarry, scored a 78th minute penalty to set up a tense second leg in Montevideo.

Uruguay defended stoutely up until that moment, although Australia did have earlier chances to make the scoreline more comfortable for them.

Australia are hoping to avoid their play-off heartache of four years ago (when they lost to Iran) and take the final place up for grabs for next summer's Mondial tournament in Korea and Japan.

Keane waits for Munich

Roy Keane is fit to lead Manchester United out in Tuesday's Champions League big clash against European champions Bayern Munich in Germany.

The Republic of Ireland's midfielder has suffered no reaction after playing the full 90 minutes of United's 2-0 win over Leicester.

He was forced to miss the second leg of the World Cup play-off against Iran last week after complaining of stiffness in his knee following the first leg in Dublin which was his first game in three weeks.

Keane Is Ready

However, United's manager, Alex Ferguson, checked on Keane during training on and claimed there is no problem with his knee.

It all means that United should be at full strength for the opening second phase game in the Olympic Stadium, even with Juan Sebastian Veron set to return after being rested on Saturday.

His return means that Dwight Yorke is likely to be relegated to the bench despite scoring his first goal since April 14 (!!) on Saturday.

The SoccerAccess Network has released its second program in a week, the highly anticipated Ball Raptor! Ball Raptor allows you to choose between 15 different balls or even add new balls using zip or fsh files. A great utility for your FIFA 2002.

The Balls included in BALL RAPTOR are 2GB (second generation balls) made with textures of 128x128. This is the same concept of the 2GK Kits. With a special file included in this program, the balls from your game will use larger FSH images. Therefore, the quality of the balls increases drastically.

Click for larger image

They have also released another very handy utility called Boot Raptor. Boot Raptor allows you to upload up to 15 different styles of boots to your FIFA 2002. The images must be gif files of 84x84 pixels. A very useful tool for your FIFA 2002.

Due to the success of the first Raptor program, programmer Ariel Santarelli decided to put more emphasis on this series of Fifa 2002 programs. Ariel has already released screenshots of the SoccerAccess upcoming programs. They will continue to promote the Raptor series, with the highly anticipated GamePlay Raptor and Kit Raptor. We invite you to visit their site, see the wonderful editors that they have for you this year, and post your thoughts and comments in the forums and talkback pages.

Sol Campbell: "Enough is enough!"

Arsenal's Sol Campbell passed a test of character on his return to White Hart Lane and then declared: "Enough is enough now."
The former Tottenham favourite was targeted throughout by Spurs fans still angry over his summer switch to north London rivals Arsenal.

An inquiry may follow after water bottles were thrown at Campbell during the match which ended 1-1 after Tottenham's Gustavo Poyet levelled it in injury-time.

Before the game, the visitors' coach was pelted as it arrived at the ground with bottles and cans.

The jeers reached a crescendo just before kick-off, while banners and balloons bearing the word 'Judas' were held aloft and Campbell's every touch was booed.

Sol Canpbell

But the England's defender never lost his composure and gave what was probably his best performance of the season so far.

Campbell said: "It was a bit strange for me but you have to take it. I didn't understand why it the abuse went on for the whole game but enough is enough now. I wasn't aware of the bottles being thrown at the coach but I was aware of the bottles being thrown on the pitch. Everyone has got their opinions, everyone has got their passions but it hasn't been too difficult this week."

Stam failed on drugs test

Jaap Stam's suspension for failing on drugs test has been upheld by the Italian Football League.

The league's disciplinary committee confirmed that the Lazio defender would be suspended from all sporting activity with immediate effect.

But no decision on a ban will be made until the result of a second test on the former Manchester United centre-half is known.

The decision follows an announcement by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on Friday that Stam had tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone after the Serie A game against Atalanta on 13 October.

Stam Failed On Drugs Test

Stam has insisted that he is innocent: "I cannot believe what's happened and feel sick at the suggestion I would take drugs. One thing I can say, without hesitation or doubt, is that I have never knowingly taken nandrolone or any other illegal substance. I am not - and never have been - a cheat and would never do anything like this to jeopardise the happiness of my family or the future of my career."

The Italian Olympic Committee released a statement, detailing the circumstances in which the Stam failed his test: "The Rome laboratory has revealed in the analysis a presence of the metabolic substance nandrolone," ,said the statement, "The athlete has been found positive in the first analysis and will be immediately suspended from all sporting activities."

Stam, 29, who joined Lazio from United for £16.5m in August, after the well known clash with Feguson, is the second player at the Serie A club to fail such a test.

Portuguese international Fernando Couto has just returned from a ban, while Dutch team-mates Edgar Davids and Frank de Boer have also been suspended for use of the drug.

Juventus midfielder Davids was banned for five months and fined £32,000, but has since returned to action.

Figo: "Beckham don't deserve the award"

Portuguese super-star Luis Figo claims David Beckham is not good enough to be European Footballer of the Year. Figo said Beckham was not even the best player at Manchester United.

The Real Madrid winger is the current holder of the title with another Madrid's player, Zidane, and is on the list of 50 players in the running for this year's award.

Beckham is again on the list for what is now known as France Football magazine's "Golden Ball" award for European player of the year.

The Portugese international believes his Madrid team-mate Raul should win.

Figo told The Sun newspaper: "If I had to choose a player from United, I would choose Ryan Giggs. I would place Raul at the top for all the goals he regularly scores in the championship and Europe."

European Player Of The Year Award

Roma's coach Fabio Capello thinks the prize, presented on 18 December, should go to Beckham or Raul.

Capello said: "I think Raul deserves the award for what he has done in the last few seasons, showing his great talent on many occasions. But Beckham has become a complete player and shown himself to be really mature."

Ireland are through too

Republic of Ireland will go to the World Cup Finals next summer, despite a 1-0 defeat in Tehran.

Iran attacked through the whole game but didn't manage to really risk Given plus the very slow game by the Iranian made the Irish defense life's easy. The sedate nature of the game seemed to affect the 100,000-strong support, who were audible only in bursts after they had drowned out the Irish national anthem before kick-off.

Yahya Golmohammadi did head a consolation from Mehdi Mahdavikia's free-kick in injury-time, but it was no more than a statistic in the end. An Irish forward line lacking the presence of Niall Quinn seldom gave Ebrahim Mirzapour a chance to repeat the acrobatics he so eagerly displayed between the posts at Lansdowne Road, but neither the small Irish contingent in the ground nor the jubilant Irish millions will care about that.

Brazil are finally through

Brazil are through to next year's World Cup finals after a comfortable 3-0 win over Venzuela in Sao Luis.

They only country to have played in every World Cup tournament kept that record intact despite a troubled and unconvincing qualifying campaign.

Brazil have used four coaches and lost six matches in route to the 2002 finals in Korea and Japan.

"We suffered for 17 games and I thank the Brazilians who suffered with us, wer'e finally there." said the left-back Roberto Carlos.

Germany, Turkey, Slovenia & Belgium are through

Germany, Turkey, Slovenia and Belgium were all celebrating their second-chance reprieves after reaching next year's World Cup finals through the European playoffs. They all triumphed over other teams who finished as runners-up in the European qualifying competition to swell the number of known qualifiers for the finals to 29.

Germany, who were in danger of failing to appear in the World Cup finals for the first time since 1950, immediately dispelled such fears by going 3-0 up inside the first 20 minutes against Ukraine in Dortmund.

They ended up 4-1 winners to clinch the tie 5-2 on aggregate after their 1-1 draw in Kiev on Saturday. Turkey, who won the first leg of their playoff 1-0 against Austria in Vienna, scorched to an emphatic 5-0 second leg victory at the Ali Sami Yen stadium in Istanbul to reach the finals for the first time since 1954 on a 6-0 aggregate.

Slovenia fought hard for a 1-1 draw against Romania in Bucharest for a 3-2 aggregate win to secure their first World Cup finals appearance after making their international finals tournament debut in Euro 2000 last year.

In Prague, Belgium beat the Czech Republic 1-0 to go through 2-0 on aggregate for their sixth successive appearance in the finals. The Czechs, who had Tomas Repka sent off on Saturday, saw skipper Pavel Nedved and Milan Baros both dismissed two minutes from time.

There was a similarly one-sided match in Istanbul where Turkey were utterly dominant against an Austrian side already at a disadvantage after losing their home leg 1-0.

Austria came with the 9 players who refused to go to Israel, but still didn't helped them, and they went down 5-0, a similar result to the one they lost against Israel last year.

Yildiray Basturk made it 2-0 on aggregate after 21 minutes and once Hakan Sukur (30) and Okan Buruk (44) added two more before halftime to make it 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate, Austria were all but dead and buried. Arif Erdem scored twice after 68 and 83 minutes to send Turkey into the finals for the first time in what will be 48 years by the time they kick off next year.

Roy Keane might come back against Munich

Roy Keane could be back in action for Manchester United next week after United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, insisted his midfielder does not need knee surgery.

Ferguson has played down reports that his midfield dynamo must undergo an operation to cure an injury to his patella, declaring that Keane has not even had a scan to determine the extent of the problem.

Keane has already pulled out of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifying play-off second-leg against Iran this Thursday, and Ferguson revealed that the player will resume training this week ahead of United's Champions League match against current cup holders and arch-rivals Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

"He's not had a scan and he isn't having one,", Ferguson said, "We hope to get him back in training on Thursday and we hope he will be fit for Bayern Munich."

Fiorentina in troubles

The Italian club, Fiorentina’s future is nearing a crucial crossroad, now that their loan request made to the Monte Paschi di Siena bank was rejected by the financial institution.

This refusal surprised me. I am afraid there are reasons that have little to do with football and Fiorentina behind this decision.” said Fiorentina's midfielder, Angelo Di Livio today.

If Fiorentina's Chairman, Vittorio Cecchi Gori, fails to find a buyer the team will be forced to file for bankruptcy, and all of Fiorentina’s assets will be controlled by the courts.

Mayebe you guys got some spare money to buy Fiorentina?

Oliver Kahn: "Shevchenko is overrated"

Germany goal-keeper Oliver Kahn has laughed off the threat of Andrei Shevchenko ahead of the second-leg of the World Cup qualifying play-off with Ukraine.

The AC Milan's striker missed the 1-0 defeat in Kiev with a broken nose and although he is expected back for Wednesday's return clash, Kahn insists he is overrated. He said: "He has been praised to the skies, but realistically he is just a good striker who we know how to stop."

"Austria don't deserve to go to World Cup"

Haluk Ulsoy, the Turkish Football Federation chairman, has claimed that Austria do not deserve to go to the World Cup finals.

Turkey lead the Austrians 1-0 going into Wednesday's play-off second leg in Istanbul, and Ulsoy believes there should only be one winner. "Look at how the two teams got into the play-off," he said.

"The Austrians only qualified because of a last minute lucky goal. And anyway, we have to go to the finals. Austria have played in many finals in the past, but we have done so just once in 1954."

Stam: "I will never come back to United"

Lazio's defender Jaap Stam says that he keeps being told that Manchester United's decision to sell him to the Italian side was the "worst deal of the summer".

United's manager, Alex Ferguson sold Stam for £16.5m and replaced him with Laurent Blanc soon after the start of the season.

Ferguson figured that Blanc and Barthez know each other so well and co-operate excellent on pitch, so that will make United's defence strong as it was.

But since Stam's departure, United's defence has conceded goals at a rate of nearly two a game.

The Premiership holders have also lost three league games and slipped down to sixth place in the table.

"I am flattered when I hear that United are missing me," ,Stam said, "Everyone is convinced that my transfer was the worst deal of the summer. People and friends in England tell me this more and more. While I was in United, we won almost everything we could. Since I left, I have noticed things have gone wrong, especially in the left."

Stam also added that he would never return to Old Trafford as a player.

"I'm told by friends in England that I am not with the club I should be, and that I want to crawl back on my knees to Manchester United. But I can tell you that I will never come back to United, even if they asked me. United for me is a chapter of a book I have read and will never get into again."

Keane is out for second leg

Roy Keane is out of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off second leg against Iran in Tehran on Thursday.

the 30 years-old captain led his country to a 2-0 victory in the first leg at Lansdowne Road on Saturday after missing five matches for United.

Ferguson had given his team's captain permission to play for Ireland despite his absence from club fixtures and he came through the whole 90 minutes.

On Sunday afternoon it was announced that the midfielder had been sent home to Manchester for treatment on his injured knee.

Mick McCarthy, Ireland's manager said: "His knee has stiffened up overnight and it would be unfair to ask him to play two matches in five days."

Turkey half through to World Cup

Turkey took a massive step towards next year's World Cup finals by winning away in Austria in the first leg of their play-off match.

Okan Buruk scored the game's only goal on the hour mark when he poked home from close range after a slip in the Austrian defence.

Almost half the crowd was made up of Turkish fans, and they celebrated in great style.

The match was extremely tight and competitive, Spanish referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzales handed out four yellow cards only in the first half hour.

Austria included none of the nine rebel players who refused to play in their final group qualifying match against Israel, where they stole a 1-1 draw to earn the right to meet Turkey.

Australia 1 - 1 France

Australia held World and European champions France to a 1-1 draw in their much-hyped friendly in Melbourne.

Australia's coach, Frank Ferina fielded what he called his "dream team", including Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka of Leeds up front.

And indeed his "dream team" went in front a minute before half-time when Craig Moore steered home a header.

But France hit back and forced a draw with a superbly-worked goal by David Trezeguet who scored from close range on 49 minutes.

Australia: Schwarzer, Muscat, Moore, Tony Vidmar, Murphy, Emerton, Okon, Skoko, Lazaridis, Viduka, Kewell.

France: Barthez, Karembeu, Leboeuf, Desailly, Candela, Vieira, Makelele, Pires, Zidane, Trezeguet, Dugarry.

Israeli Premier League latest news

The big derby game of Tel-Aviv ended in a satisfying 2-2 draw which held in front of a full stadium who provided a great set for a great game as the fight for the 1st place was underway to begin.

Hapoel Tel-Aviv came in form and high moral after kicking Chelsea out of the UEFA cup, Maccabi came as underdogs though they are at the 1st place, cause of a massive injury problems with 6 starting line-up players out of the squad and a youthful and un-experienced replacements.

Hapoel opened hard and at the 10th minute took up the lead with 1-0 by Sergei Klechenko. Maccabi's response didn't took long, after only one minute, Eli Biton made a slalom between 3 players and gave a great ball to Avi Nimny. Nimny sharp as always, equalized the score to 1-1.

The second half opened as a storm too, at the 55th minute the referee called a penalty kick for Hapoel. Shimon Gershon shot the ball in, and set the result on 2-1 for Hapoel. Maccabi pressed hard and threw Ferenc Horvat in, the Hungarian international striker pushed the Hapoel defense back, and at the 72nd minute Maccabi won a penalty kick. once again Avi Nimny got it in and equalized to set the score on 2-2.

Both Maccabi and Hapoel had chances for winning the game, but in the end the score is 2-2 draw, which leaves Maccabi Tel-Aviv still at 1st place with 1 game missing.

Beitar Jerusalem sank even deeper down to the last place when lost 2-3 to Hapoel Haifa. Beitar ended the game with only 8 (!!) players after 3 players were sent off by red cards. Beitar performed a great fighting spirit by equalizing 2-2 with only 9 players, but even that didn't gave them the willing point and in the end they broke down under Haifa's pressure.

England 1 - 1 Sweden

England's manager, Sven Goran Eriksson admitted his home nation deserved a draw at Old Trafford - and warned England they will have to improve on their performance in the 1-1 stalemate.

The Swede saw his skipper fire England ahead from the penalty spot by Beckham only for Mild to equalise in the second half, but felt his adopted nation could easily have won the game.

Eriksson said: "I think we played well for the first half and they played some very good football at the beginning of the second half. After we brought all the subs on, we created some good chances and we could have won the game - but 1-1 is O.K.

"You always learn a lot even if it's a friendly. I think we have to to try and be much better for June and I'm sure we will. Sometimes we played some good football, but sometimes we let Sweden play too much.

Beckham's historical free-kick

David Beckham has relived the dramatic moments, second by second, when he stamped England's passport into next summer's World Cup in Korea and Japan.

England captain Beckham joyfully recalled the free-kick deep into injury-time that earned the 2-2 draw against Greece at Old Trafford.

Beckham spoke at an exclusive interview to BBC and said:
"I remember looking at Gary Neville and he pointed at the scoreboard. That made me look up at the scoreboard and I saw something like 92 minutes on it, and I thought this is it, our last chance. It was just me and the ball. That's what I concentrated on. I remember the referee blew his whistle on 92 minutes, 16 seconds. Then I remember putting the ball down and hitting it."

Beckham admitted feeling that some had given up hope of England sealing automatic qualification as time ticked away.

He added: "I remember taking a deep breath before I ran and just hitting it. That's all I concentrated on.

"Luckily enough, Germany had drawn their game, but I didn't know that until I had asked the manager. I went straight over after I had celebrated and asked him and he said 0-0.

"To be honest, my head was elsewhere anyway and I had been celebrating as if we had won the World Cup.

Silvestre: I could be out by Christmas

French defender Mikael Silvestre said his playing days at Manchester United could soon be over following his criticism of manager Alex Ferguson's methods.

Silvestre said he was not confident of having a long career at the famous English club.

Silvestre who now is in Melbourne for France national team's game against Australia, spoke out and said: "I could be leaving by Christmas, Anybody can move. That's football. We'll see. It's one of the biggest clubs in Europe, It's difficult to find a better club, a better football life."

As for Ferguson, Silvestre said: "We have let in lots of goals since the start of the season and according to the manager the problems stem from the centre of defence, I have sat through videos of our matches with the manager but I don't agree with the theories he puts forward.

"Alex Ferguson repeatedly opts to play Denis Irwin and that is something I find really hard to cope with. However, I will hold myself back for the time being. I need to keep calm. It would be idiotic to blow a fuse but I've strung together some good performances so I feel somewhat bitter about our difficult start to the season.

FIFA 2002 v/s Pro Evolution Soccer

Will FIFA 2002 be able to challenge off Pro Evolution Soccer....? That's surely an interesting concept cause both EA Sports as well as Konami have bet high on their games.
Some people are already saying that Pro Evolution Soccer has more qualities than FIFA 2002 and vice versa; I will definitely buy FIFA 2002 whether it's good or not but will Konami conquer the hearts of FIFA fans...?

Gentlemen, place your bets.

Claudio "Piojo" Lopez to Parma?

The new Parma manager, Daniel Passarella, has targeted Lazio striker Claudio "Piojo" Lopez as he looks to rebuild the struggling Serie A side.

The former Argentina captain and coach told a press conference on Wednesday that he didn't need to buy any new players, but the Italian press have been full of speculation about those most likely to join.

Another Argentinian, Ariel Ortega has been linked with a return to his former club, but Lopez appears to be the new target for Parma, whose poor start to the season and failure to reach the group stages of the Champions League cost Renzo Ulivieri his job at the end of October.

Beckham: No crisis at Manchester United

David Beckham insists there is no crisis at Manchester United despite the latest talks around Paul Scholes.

Scholes has been fined two weeks wages for failing to show for the Worthington Cup clash with Arsenal and reports have suggested he may be ready to leave Old Trafford.

But although he's refusing to speculate on Scholes's situation, Beckham did dismiss talk of a crisis following the 4-0 and the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal and Liverpool.

About the crisis situation, Beckham said: "It doesn't bother me. Whenever we draw or lose a game it's a crisis at Man United but I don't see it being a problem. It's always disappointing losing big games and losing to Liverpool was disappointing because of the way we played but at the end of the day it's just one game. To be honest it's not something I really want to go into. I don't really know what's gone on. It's between the manager and the player."

Under pressure

The Brazilian superstar Rivaldo has led the calls to lessen the amount of games played, insisting the busy schedule could end up killing someone.

The Barcelona star was speaking ahead of Brazil's disastrous 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat by Bolivia and warned organisers to expect the worse unless things change. He said: "A player could die on the field before long."

Injury problems for England

Steven Gerrard, Trevor Sinclair and Martin Keown were the three injury concerns today ahead of England's friendly against Sweden at Old Trafford.

The Liverpool's talented midfielder, whose brief international career has been shadowed by injury, missed the last 20 minutes of Wednesday's training session and Sven Goran Eriksson will decide whether he will play in the game.

Eriksson said: "Steve Gerrard went out of training the last 15 or 20 minutes and we will see tomorrow. I hope he is available but we have to wait until tomorrow."

Redgarding Sinclair and Keown, Eriksson added: "It shouldn't be bad, I think it's just for today. Everyone else is okay."

Sinclair was wearing strapping on his right ankle, while Keown picked up a knock in the game against Charlton on Sunday.

The captain, David Beckham, took part in the open training session after coming off during United's defeat at Liverpool on Sunday and putting an ice pack on his knee.

"Ferguson has been like a father to me"

Ryan Giggs says that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been like a father to him through the years.

The left winger spoke out after Ferguson admitted that one of the reasons for his retirement is a desire to spend more time with his family.

"I was sad to hear the manager feels he's missed out on seeing his kids grow up," Giggs said, "He's spent so much time being a father figure to players like me, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Phil and Gary Neville, it's meant he's had less time for other areas of his life. I just hope the success that dedication and sacrifice brought is some compensation - I'll always be grateful to him for making me the player I am."

McManaman asked out of England squad

Real Madrid have revealed it was Steve McManaman, and not them, who asked for the midfielder to be left out of the England squad for Saturday's friendly against Sweden.

Macca phoned the FA to request permission to play in Real's Primera Liga clash against Real Zaragoza.

Real's sports director Emilio Butragueno said: "Real Madrid did not impose themselves, phone or ask the English FA for Steve McManaman not to be in the England side. It was the player who phoned the English FA and they decided to be understanding."Real Madrid have a very important match this Sunday against Zaragoza. We have many injured players and Steve is such a good player, He has been playing very well lately for us, it is important that he plays on Sunday"

The Spanish champions are already without eight players, including three who are on international duty. Midfielders Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele are with the France squad, Defender Geremi is on duty with the Cameroon squad, while Roberto Carlos, Aitor Karanka and Savio are injured. Michel Salgado and Ivan Campo are suspended.

"Chelsea fans deserve more"

Ken Bates believes the Chelsea fans deserve better than they have been getting from their highly-paid super-stars.

The Chelsea chairman left Stamford Bridge last Thursday following the Blues embarrassing UEFA Cup exit to the anonymous Hapoel Tel-Aviv while the supporters still singing.

Chelsea moved up to seventh place with their last win over Ipswich on Sunday, but Bates is still not happy.

He said: "I wonder if our current players appreciate our immortal supporters? By its very nature, football is a story of highs and lows - Thursday was definitely one of the lows. A team that would struggle to compete in the Nationwide League came to Stamford Bridge and as the Romans said 'We came, we saw, we conquered'. Their goalkeeper had an outstanding game but our highly-paid strikers didn't strike, we were out-fought and out-thought. Hapoel deserved to win and we can only wish them luck in the next round."

Manchester United lost again!

Has anybody seen Manchester United lately?
that's the question that most of the United fans asking themselves after the defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal.

Sylvain Wiltord hit a first-half hat-trick as a youthful United side was taught a tough lesson on the eve of Sir Alex Ferguson's 15th anniversary at Old Trafford.

Kanu rammed home the advantage in the second half - again from the spot - as Arsenal went from conceding to scoring four goals.

United fielded an unfamiliar line-up that included youngsters Jimmy Davis and Lee Roche, while in contrast Arsenal included the likes of Gilles Grimandi, Kanu and Ray Parlour in their eleven.

Ferguson got a lot of work under his hands for the upcoming Champion's League game against Bayern Munich, the way Manchester looked the past week, Munich will crush them.

Liverpool aims high

Liverpool's Danny Murphy is full of confidence in the Liverpool squad by revealing the players expect to win the Premiership this season.

Murphy is keen to guard against getting too carried away, even in the wake of Liverpool's 3-1 great victory over Manchester United, but he accepts the Reds should now see the title as a realistic goal.

"It's always lovely to beat Manchester United, but to do it in such a quiet, convincing style is even better. I thought we dominated the game. It was the most complete performance I can remember since I joined the club. People are starting to talk about us winning the title and I think it's fair enough. The players are expecting to win it, but we are definitely not getting carried away because of one game. We're good enough to win the league, but like any other side we can still have our bad days. What we've got to do is stop losing stupid games. No disrespect to Aston Villa, but we should have beaten them at home." said Murphy.

Ronaldo's bad luck strikes again

Inter Milan striker Ronaldo limped off just 17 minutes into his first competitive match for nearly two years.

The former World Footballer of the Year received treatment on the sidelines for several minutes before being substituted with a thigh problem.

"I am disappointed but I don't think it is because I was rushed back to play too soon, I think it comes more from not playing for two years. It's not serious but I am disappointed because I was motivated for this game", Ronaldo said.

The Brazilian will undergo a scan on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, but Inter Mialn's coach Hector Cuper is relaxed.

"It's not serious," said Cuper. "We have taken it easy with the comeback, given him time. He is fine, he is in good condition.".

Ferguson is angry

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was angry of his side's 3-1 defeat at Liverpool and admitted his defense is in danger of ruining his last season.

United came a poor second best to a great game by Liverpool but saw more defensive mistakes from Wes Brown and Fabien Barthez hand their hosts the points on a silver plate.

Ferguson stuck up for his failing back line on numerous occasions this season but his patience snapped after their third Premiership defeat of the campaign.

"We lost two terrible goals and that has been endemic this season and Liverpool just worked harder. We conceded too many goals. If we don't eradicate silly mistakes we will suffer. Liverpool have shown today how we were four years ago and until we get back to that it will be very difficult for us." Ferguson said.

Yorke to Chelsea?

Struggling Chelsea are considering making a £7million bid for Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, according to newspaper reports.

Chelsea wants a top class striker as a regular partner for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and see Yorke as his ideal foil.

Yorke, who was the first choice at Old Trafford together with Cole, now finds himself as fourth choice striker behind Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With Chelsea struggling for victories in the Premiership and morale at a low following their defeat and Uefa Cup exit to Hapoel Tel Aviv, the club need a real boost.

Chelsea chairman Ken Bates sanctioned a move for Yorke at the end of last season, but the Trinidad and Tobago international chose to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

But now the door appears to be shut on his way back into the team, Yorke could really think about a move to London.

Robert Jarni to Manchester City

The deal to bring Croatian international defender Robert Jarni to Manchester City is about to be concluded next week.

Kevin Keegan is set to tie up the signature of his eighth signing as City manager next week. Robert Jarni has had initial talks with the club and was at Barnsley to watch City cruise to a 3-0 win in midweek.

The international skipper is in dispute with his club, the Spanish Las Palmas who are themselves in financial difficulties. Once those loose ends are tied up the player could become a Blue with the aim of real strengthening the left side of the City squad.

Meanwhile the pairing of Eyal Berkovic and Ali Benarbia is there to help realise the manager's ambitions of total football at Maine Road.

Keegan said: "The fans have been crying out for a Manchester City side at Maine Road to come out and play almost total football. I am not saying we are at that stage yet but we certainly have players who, when they are in possession of a football, can come out and cause teams problems in any Division."

Keegan is full of belief in the pairing of the two playmakers and knows the fans will get right behind the side, but only if the pair can orchestrate the moves for the strikers to hit the right notes, "I think the fans will enjoy seeing Ali and Eyal playing together" Keegan said.

Beckham Speaks

David Beckham, the 26 years old Manchester United midfielder, says he will not be a manager when his playing career is over.

"I don't want to be a manager or a coach" ,Beckham said , "I will have had stress and hassle for the last 20 years so it will be a relief not to."

Beckham also talked about moving abroad and said that he does not feel he has to move abroad to prove himself: "People can always have their opinions, like to become a great player you've got to go and play in Italy and Spain. But for me happiness is more important. It's my decision. If I'm happy in my life and my football at United, then I won't make any changes in it. I've had the offers - you see things in the papers about Barcelona, Milan and Madrid and you think about it. But if I'm happy I don't see why I should move anywhere else."

Chelsea are out!

Hapoel Tel-Aviv drew 1-1 against Chelsea (3-1 on agg.) and go through to the next stage of the Uefa cup.

Chelsea played well and had a lot of chances in front of the goal, but an excellent performance by Shavit Elimelech, Hapoel's goalkeeper, stopped all of Chelsea's shots. the first goal scored surprisingly by Hapoel Tel-Aviv at the 36' minute, an excellent ball from Istavan Pisonte to Milan Ostrec ended in Bosnich's net. the second goal scored by Gianfranco Zola in the 64' minute.

This 1-1 draw and the overall winning of Hapoel Tel-Aviv 3-1 on agg. against the multi millions club, Chelsea is an European sensation, since Hapoel is a small team compared to Chelsea, with a budget of only 8 million dollar against the 100 million dollar budget of Chelsea.

Shimon Gershon, Hapoel Tel-Aviv's captain said: "I'm proud in all the players, we brought Israel a reason to be happy. at the first game everybody said that Chelsea didn't came with all the stars and that's why we won, but we showed everybody that we can play good against Chelsea with all their stars and in their home"

The 4GK Kits

Xavier Báez did it again, how can´t you just love this guy! Read below what he sent us:

"From the creators of the 2GK kits, the 4GK kits have arrived!

Well, we started with the 2GK kits almost a year ago and we didn't knew that they were going to become so popular. Due to this tremendous use of the 2GK Kits, Ariel decided to investigate just a bit more and guess what he found?. The 3GK Kits! The 3GK kits included an individual kit for each goalkeeper and were released in the Argentina 2GK Patch by FifaExpress. Well, to say good-bye to FIFA 2001, Ariel investigated a bit more and guess what he found?.

The 4GK Kits! This type of kits include mini photographs of the players that appear in the starting lineup of your team. Even the coach has a mini photograph! For example, lets say that you play with River Plate, and select the following lineup: Comizzo, Garcé, Ayala, Yépes, Rojas, Cambiasoo... and so on. (see screenshot)

Next time that you load a game, the mini photos of those players will appear in the starting lineup (like a real TV broadcast) along with the photograph of the coach and in the background the kit of your team. This beautiful combination of graphic patches and 4GK kits is available in our latest patch, the Argentina Apertura 2001 Patch by FifaExpress. Download it at Soccer Access (English) or at Fifala (Spanish). The patch is divided in 3 parts:

  • Part 1: The Argentina Patch and the the new graphic patch.
  • Part 2: The mini pictures of the players that show up in the starting lineup.
  • Part 3: Sound Edition 2.0, menu art.

The patch works in every language, however the version that was published at Soccer Access was made for English speaking people. We really recommend you to check this patch before you move on to FIFA 2002. This patch is FIFA-MRA compliant as well."

Well now I can only say: "Go get this piece of Art right now!!"

Chelsea to go through?

Tonight, Chelsea will try to win at least 3-0 after being two down against Hapoel Tel-Aviv. Claudio Ranieri says everyone should be fit, but the media watched Emmanuel Petit limp out of training yesterday, and Gianfranco Zola is admitted to having a cold. He completed training. Carlo Cudicini will not open but is expected to be on the bench.

Chelsea are hoping for a crowd of around 30,000, far bigger than might have been expected if the first leg had been a better result. The away section, all 3,000 of both East Stand bottom tiers, is almost sold out to Hapoel Tel-Aviv's fans.

At the press conference, Ranieri said: "There's a chance of 65% that Hapoel will go through". Dror Kashtan, Hapoel Tel-Aviv's manager, answered: "I don't do speculations, we came here to play football. I've got full confident in my players and I'm not going to change the way we play, we are going to play an open game cause for winning you got to score".

Hapoel line-up: Shavit Elimelech (GK) / Ilan Bachar, Assi Domb, Shimon Gershon, Igal Antebi / Yossi Abuksis, Dennis Unishenko, Gabor Holmai, Ben-Luz / Milan Ostrec, Sergei Kleshenko.

Who's in and who's out

Juventus, Porto, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Deportivo La Coruna, Sparta Prague, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are the teams who made it to the next stage of the Champions League in yesterday matches.

Celtic due to it's magnificent win against Juventus 4-3, didn't make it to the next stage and finished only at third place, so Celtic will continuo it's European journey in the Uefa cup.
