Ballack's not for sale Bayern boss insists

Visit Chelsea mini siteSpeculation that Chelsea may have Michael Ballack in their sights has prompted Bayern Munich manager Uli Hoeness to insist the player's going nowhere.

"In no case is Ballack for sale," Hoeness told Saturday's Abendzeitung newspaper. "Ballack's agent Michael Becker has told me that no one's been in contact with him."

That last comment appears to be at odds with a report in Bild quoting Becker as saying that an English agent had indeed been in contact.

"It seems that Chelsea are very interested in him." Becker told Bild.

Hoeness said the rumours surrounding his World Cup runner-up were being propagated by a group of people who wanted to do Bayern Munich down.

"They (the rumours) can only come from certain people who are trying to divide us," he suggested.

And days after telling German television that Ballack wasn't playing well because he wasn't in good enough shape Hoeness insisted there was no rift between them.

"(I've got) very good relations with Ballack," he said. "There's no dispute! I play cards with him and we discuss football."

Ballack moved to the German champions in July last year after helping Bayer Leverkusen to the Champions League final, and runners-up spots in the both the Bundesliga and German Cup. His contract with Bayern runs till 2006.

Take it to the Bridge

Visit Chelsea mini siteArguably the biggest game of the season so far takes place at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as the two richest clubs in the league go head-to-head. Will Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea All-Stars confirm their arrival as a major force in English football, or will Manchester United stamp their authority on the pretenders to the crown?

While there have been plenty of big games in the Barclaycard Premiership already this season, Chelsea vs Manchester United has a pretty good claim to be the biggest of all so far. The two richest clubs in the country will be squaring off for the first time since Roman Abramovich rode into Stamford Bridge and took both Juan Sebastian Veron and Peter Kenyon from Old Trafford.

This will be Chelsea's best chance to prove that they can be the new dominant force in English football, with their only loss so far this season coming against the other title contender Arsenal, at Highbury.

Blues fans will be praying for the kind of demolition job they saw back in October 1999 at Stamford Bridge, when Chelsea thrashed the Treble-winners 5-0. That victory was seen as the dawn of a new era where the west London pretenders would finally emerge as real contenders for the title, but it never materialised, and of the men who lined up for them four years ago, only Celestine Babayaro is still at the club.

Mikael Silvestre, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt are the only United players from that era who are still in Sir Alex's plans, but the rest will have been reminded of it in the build-up. Not that Fergie will be expecting a similar result this Sunday, but should the worst happen, he may well recall the false dawn that was heralded four years ago.

The Scot will certainly be relieved that Chelsea's rampant form was interrupted by the international break. Before it they demolished Lazio in Rome and Newcastle at home, but could only manage a single goal at Southampton last weekend and failed to find the target against Sparta Prague on Wednesday.

United also failed to impress in the Champions League fixture but they came away from Greece having snatched a 1-0 win against Panathinaikos thanks to in-form Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan. With Sunday's late afternoon kick-off, United should have plenty of time to recover from the exertions of their European trip, while Ranieri can take comfort in the knowledge that if any of his players are feeling the effects from the midweek visit of the Czechs, he can simply replace them with another world-class star.

United's form has been more uncertain of late, with the catastrophic performance against Fulham followed by some less than convincing victories; most recently a 2-1 win against Blackburn at Old Trafford. The bonuses from that game were the promising displays from Kleberson and David Bellion after their surprise elevation to starters, though Ferguson is almost certain to bring Ryan Giggs back in for the trip to Chelsea.

The Welshman was on the scoresheet the last time United played at Stamford Bridge, back in August 2002. On that occasion William Gallas and Bolo Zenden put Chelsea in front twice only for David Beckham and Giggs to draw United level again. The visitors were unlucky not to be given a penalty for a Cudicini foul on Paul Scholes in the second half as the game finished 2-2. A similarly close encounter will be expected this time around, despite the high hopes of the home fans who might be starting to think Roman and Ranieri's team is the real deal.

Champions League Update: Chelsea 0 v Sparta Prague 0

Visit Chelsea mini siteMake sure your passports are in date – our European adventure continues into the new year! That’s the take home message from Stamford Bridge tonight.

And it is messages rather than memories that most people present will be taking away from a rather lifeless game. However a point is all that was needed to guarantee a place in the last 16 knockout of the Champions League and a point is what we achieved.

Speaking of point, Chelsea will do that to two strikes against the woodwork plus chances for Hernan Crespo in the first minute of both halves, and an extraordinary miss by Adrian Mutu at the death as evidence that this was a game that could, and should have been won.

Sparta Prague’s point of view will be that they came to keep things tight with a five man midfield and they did defended well. In doing so they have kept their qualification hopes alive so who can argue that their game plan was flawed.

Check out the full story at the Official Chelsea FC Website.

UEFA move Besiktas game

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea’s UEFA Champions League Matchday 6 game away to Besiktas is being switched to a neutral venue.

The UEFA Emergency Panel met in Brussels yesterday and decided that all three scheduled European games in Turkey over the next few weeks should be moved. Besiktas have been asked to find an alternative venue by this Friday, November 28th, midday Central European time (11am in the UK).

UEFA said: "The decision comes in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks of 15 and 20 November in Istanbul and follows a broad evaluation of the current threat to security, the advice offered by a variety of governments, including the assurances offered by the Turkish government, and the investigations still being undertaken by the relevant authorities.

Taking everything into account, the Emergency Panel felt that it was in the overall interests of clubs, players, fans and European football in general to move these particular ties at this time. Steps will now be taken to establish the venues and dates for these matches."

Southampton 0 Chelsea 1

Visit Chelsea mini siteMario Melchiot’s first Chelsea goal since March 2002 earned the points in a largely uneventful game played in freezing, monsoon-like conditions.

The biggest-ever St Mary's crowd of 32,189 was not treated to a spectacle. Just after half-time Kevin Phillips produced the game’s first on-target shot, delivered straight at Carlo Cudicini. Chelsea’s first accurate strike came a minute later, and it was far more significant.

Having switched from a diamond to a flat midfield shortly before the interval and suddenly strung some passes together, Chelsea started the second half with a long sequence of quick interchanges between Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele (a massive presence in the second half), Wayne Bridge, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Damien Duff that stretched the Saints’ midfield and defence.

Smart touches from Lampard and finally Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink left Mario Melchiot running diagonally into the box, onto the ball, and able easily to slide past Niemi from eight yards. It was a great move and cool finish.

This will not, then, go down as a classic, but it was another of those matches that we might not have won pre-Roman, and a great boost for Mario Melchiot in a testing season for him.

England win Rugby World Cup down under

Jonny Wilkinson kicked a last-minute, extra-time drop goal to kick England to glory in the World Cup final in Sydney beating the holders and hosts, Australia, 20-17.

Screenshots Read more Read more

Twice England held the lead - 14-5 at half time and then again 17-14 in the second period of extra-time - only for Australia to fight back to level terms, until Wilkinson's decisive drop goal.

Martin Johnson became the first man from the northern hemisphere to hold aloft the Webb Ellis trophy, and doing so in the Australians' back yard will have made the moment all the more sweet.

A try apiece for Wallaby wing Lote Tuqiri and England's Jason Robinson, and four penalties each for Elton Flatley and Wilkinson, made the game an exciting and tense affair, but the only drop goal of the final will be the score that the game is remembered for.

At the finale, England moved the ball into the Australian 22 for the last time, Wilkinson drifted back into the pocket, and the whole world new what was coming.

Wilkinson's penultimate kick of the game was sweet as it sailed through the uprights off his right boot. His last touch sent the ball off the pitch and England were at last happy to hear Andre Watson's whistle - it signalled that they were now World Champions.

What a day, our first World Cup win in sport since we were victorious with football in the 1966 World Cup.

Capello And Cassano Call Truce

Visit Roma mini siteItalian capital club AS Roma came out of an ominous thunderstorm with minimal damage as their `enfant terrible' Antonio Cassano decided to swallow his pride and apologise for storming out of a training-session on Thursday.

Giallorossi boss Fabio Capello accepted the olive-branch but is expected to fine the notoriously hot-headed young striker Ėwho has been in fine form of late- for yet another outburst.

This latest one had been caused by Capello's refusal to allow him to participate in a training-match for fear of him aggravating a slight ankle injury. Rather than sit and learn, Cassano took off in a huff, ignoring his coaches demands that he return and show his team-mates the respect they deserve.

Southampton v Chelsea this weekend

Visit Chelsea mini siteIt has been a busy time for Southampton since their 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers, with Gordon Strachan being strongly linked with a move to Leeds United, James Beattie being left out of and then called into the England squad, and the disappointing news that Matt Oakley's season is already over because of injury. Now they must refocus on the task at hand, especially as that is facing Chelsea.

While the Saints players have been worked extra hard in training following two poor performances and results against Manchester City and Bolton, the visitors will be flying high after their scorching wins over Lazio and Newcastle. However, manager Claudio Ranieri continues to be cautious about their championship hopes, refusing to carried away even after the 5-0 win over the Magpies.

"I'll believe the title when I touch it, not before," he said. "Players can dream but the manager must have the right balance. We were very close to Arsenal and Manchester United on Christmas Day last year but then said goodbye. It was important for us to win today because it's not easy when Arsenal continue to win. I'm pleased, our foundations are good and it's important I have a lot of champions in my team."

James Beattie will certainly be out to make a good impression as he stakes a claim for a regular England place. Even though he was eventually called up by Sven, he would prefer to be more than a replacement for a replacement!

In September 2002 when these two sides met at St Mary's, Fabrice Fernandes gave the Saints a lead just after half-time, only for Frank Lampard to equalise ten minutes from the end. However, that was a very different Chelsea side to the one who will take the field on Saturday, in confidence as well as personnel.

Cassano Storms Out Of Training

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma forward Antonio Cassano stormed out of training today after a row with coach Fabio Capello.

Having been left out of a training match by Capello, Cassano walked off angrily. Capello called him back, asking him to return in respect to his team-mates, but the hot-headed youngster took no notice.

Cassano, who is in such fine form for club and country, is likely to be disciplined by the club.

Electronic Arts Italia presented Fifa to the press; Raul Cremona was the anchorman, the special guests were Bruno Longhi (the Italian official commentator), Klaus Davi, Jean Claude Ghinozzi (EA Italy General Manager) and, of course, the Italian testimonial, Alex Del Piero.

Del Piero talked about the making of the game, revealing that the partnership with EA did not only concern the game cover, but they also worked together in order to reproduce his moves with the famous motion capture. He also played an online game of FIAF 2004.

Del Piero was literally assailed by the press, and after a few interviews he left the hall. With the cake dedicated to the new game, they were at the end of a mighty Fifa-Day, that you'll be able to re-live with the exclusive pictures and footage brought to you over at Fifamania.

The Newest Italian Starlet

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma president Franco Sensi has heaped praise on Antonio Cassano who is in fine form for club and country.

"Inter really wanted him, as did Juventus, but we signed him instead at quite a price," he said.

"However, we are keeping a tight grip on him now and all of Europe will soon envy us for that."

Roma signed Cassano in 2001 from Bari for £20 million.

AS Roma forward Francsco Totti, who set up Marco Di Vaio's winner for Italy's against Romania last night, says he would have preferred to create a goal for fellow Giallorossi star Antonio Cassano.

"I hope to go to Portugal with him (Cassano) alongside me," said Totti. "We have known each other for two years and have a perfect understanding.

"I'd rather have delivered that assist for Antonio than for Di Vaio."

United Kingdom v Denmark International Friendly Update

Visit the FIFA Togga LeagueThe guys over at the FTL are underway in their International matchup against the boys from Denmark and although the Danes have a slight edge at the moment , the FTL's two best players Kotp & JPM restored some dignity back in the FTL Camp by destroying their Dane opponents convincingly.

JPM was first to play and produced a quality performance on home soil to beat his Dane opponent 3-1. The Second Leg was an even better performance by the FTL Number 2 as he kept a clean sheet and won 2-0.

Kotp followed and the pressure was on the FTL Number 1 Double Winners as he knew all eyes would be looking to him to follow JPM's example and bring home yet another Six Points.

The first leg kicked off and Kotp was soon into his stride throwing everything including the kitchen sink at his Dane opponent , it was only a matter of time before the flood gates opened and open they did with Kotp finishing the match very convincing 5-0 winners.

The Second Leg was an equally good performance and although the Dane looked more comfortable on his favoured settings Kotp soon took the bull by the horns and opened the scoring , the Dane rallied but excellent defending by the FTL Number 1 must of dented the Danes confidence as he continued to add to his lead and the match ended 0-4 in Kotp's favour.

With still plenty of matches to be played and the Danes suffering big losses by the FTL's Star Players could this be the turning point ? We shall soon see but whats clear at the moment is that the Danes are in the driving seat as the latest score from this International is FTL (16pts) v DMT (25pts)

More to follow shortly ...

Do we need new defenders?

Visit Chelsea mini siteAll the indications were that when the transfer window opened in December, Chelsea would continue on from where they left off in August: by spending obscene amounts of cash to bring in some of the World's best players. Particularly in the defence. But is that plan about to change?

Last week, journalists asked Claudio Ranieri about possible reinforcements to the squad, given all the rumours that had appeared recently in the press. Claudio replied in his usual genial style. "Look, I have 25 players. What more do you want? My blood?"

Sweetpatch's Premiership Round-up

Sweetpatch's Soccer SnippetsLeicester City reached a convincing win in Manchester against City on Sunday after Arsenal defeated Tottenham on Saturday, the day on which Portsmouth stunned English football with a 6-1 win over Leeds United.

Jordan Stewart opened the score for Leicester against Manchester City in the 12th minute and Paul Dickov increased the lead with a penalty in the 53rd. Five minutes later, Marcus Bent scored the third and last goal for Leicester.

Also on Sunday, Manchester United were too strong for Liverpool with 1-2 and Chelsea crushed Newcastle with 5-0.

The match round up started on Saturday. Arsenal came back from behind to eventually beat Tottenham Hotspur at Highbury. Darren Anderton scored an early opening goal in the 4th minute and it took Arsenal till the 70th minute to equalize through Frenchman Robert Pires. Fredrik Ljungberg of Sweden scored the winning goal eleven minutes later.

Meanwhile Leeds had no chance against newly promoted Portsmouth. Dejan Stefanovic opened the score for that team in the 17th minute but at that moment Leeds still knew how to stay in the match and equalized two minutes later through Alan Smith.

In the last minute of the first half, Gary O'Neill scored the 2-1 and Portsmouth went on for the 3-1 in the second half when Hayden Foxe scored in the 63rd minute. It was again Gary O'Neill to score for the 4-1 in the 71st minute and four minutes later Patrick Berger netted the fifth. Yakubu Ayegbeni signed for the final 6-1 score in minute 86.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City settled for a draw. Mikael Forssell scored the 0-1 for Birmingham in the 49th minute but it was cancelled out seventeen minutes later by Steffen Iversen.

Aston Villa had to accept a home defeat by Middlesbrough. Dutchman Boudewijn Zenden who played for Middlesbrough on loan from Chelsea scored the 0-1 after half an hour and in the 5th minute of the second half, Michael Ricketts converted a penalty kick for the 0-2.

Bolton Wanderers and Southampton had a scoreless draw and the only thing of that match to stay in the books is the red card given to Michael Svensson of Sweden after two yellow cards in minute 88.

In the second London derby of this week, Charlton Athletic were too strong for visitors Fulham. Graham Stuart opened the score for Charlton in the 12th minute and Jonatan Johansson scored the second and third goals in the 69th and 76th minute. Sean Davis scored back for Fulham in 89th minute but it was too little too late for the club from South London.

Mutu assailant Mihajlovic punished

Visit Chelsea mini siteLazio defender Sinisa Mihajlovic received on Friday a stiff penalty from UEFA for his unsavoury behaviour in Tuesday night’s game.

After viewing video evidence of Mihajlovic both kicking out and spitting at Adrian Mutu during the 4-0 win, plus looking at his conduct towards a UEFA official after he had received a red card for separate incidents, the European governing body issued an eight-match ban.

The ban covers European games and includes the suspension that would have been served for the sending off. In addition, the Serbian international who has been in trouble for similar offences before, has been fined 12,700 euros. He has until midnight on Monday to appeal.

Uefa Cup Report: Roma Win It Late, But Lose Chivu For Lazio Clash

Visit Roma mini siteA last minute Antonio Cassano goal gave AS Roma an extremely important 1-0 win over Hajduk Split in the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.

The defensive wall erected by the Croatian side made life extremely difficult for the Giallorossi throughout the match.

In the first half Roma created only two chances. The first saw John Carew have his header parried away by Hajduk keeper Runje on 11 minutes, while the second featured a solo effort by Trainos Dellas that ended with a strange shot from close range that sent the ball past the far post.

In the second half Fabio Capello replaced a useless Gaetano D'Agostino with the game's match winner, who immediately created problems for the Hajduk defense.

Two minutes after coming onto the pitch Cassano immediately found the net off a Dellas cross, but the goal was disallowed for an offside position that wasn't there.

Cassano had another chance midway through the half as he connected with a fantastic Montella lob pass. The power was there, but not the aim, and his effort flew past the far post.

As the deadlock continued, Capello decided to give Roma even more offensive power as he inserted Cristian Chivu on the left wing in the place of Francisco Lima.

The bet was paying off as the Romanian star was giving the Hajduk defense a terrible time.

However less than 15 minutes after he came onto the pitch he fell on the ground following contact with a Hajduk player. When he got up he held his shoulder in pain and was forced to leave the pitch.

No derby for him, and this is not good news for Roma.

The Italians attempted a final forcing when less than five minutes were left to be played, and their courage and determination were rewarded when Carew's header allowed Cassano to latch onto the ball and beat the keeper from short range.

Four minutes of added time were still left on the clock, and Roma immediately tried to take advantage of the psychological blow that was inflicted upon the Croatians.

This intuition almost paid off, however the post denied Carew with a goal that would have practically sealed off the qualification for the Serie A giants.

Soccer Gaming's FIFA 2004 PC Review

Buy FIFA Football 2004Soccer Gaming's first review of FIFA 2004 has been posted. IceBlu, a well known moderator from the Soccer Gaming Forums, has put together a very informative review of the FIFA 2004 PC version. In his words:

Kick off! The referee signals the start of the first half and off we go. The controls feel responsive compared to older editions of the game and passing has improved by leaps and bounds. Players actually seem involved in the game. The ground passes aren’t always predictable and get intercepted by the opponent on a regular basis which is a good thing. Same can be said of the aerial passes. They aren’t as accurate as the ground passes but if you get them right, they can be devastating. You can convert defence into attack with one good pass. The “through ball” has been added into the game which is basically what it is in real life. You can thread the needle with a good through ball and have your striker reach it leaving the defenders for dead. Crosses have improved a lot. It is pretty easy to get in a good cross from the flanks.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy Interview with Adam Reid UK Fifa Champion 2003

Visit the FIFA Togga LeagueToday I'm delighted to bring you an exclusive Interview with this Years Fifa UK Champion , Adam Reid.

Here are the questions and his replies enjoy....

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- Congratulations on becoming the Number 1 UK Fifa Player Adam , how does it feel ?

Adam Reid :- It feels very good I like the thought of nobody in the country actually being better than me at something especially as I won in London so easily !

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- What would you say makes a Top Class Fifa Player ?

Adam Reid :- There has definitely got to be some level of commitment and enjoyment in playing the game, as a couple of games a week will never get you up too scratch so u have to enjoy playing it. Also I think there has to be a certain degree of eye to hand co-ordination, especially in defensive situations, with reactions in closing down and intercepting also key. So with intercepting and defending being such a major part of my 2003 game id say reading the game has a large part to play, to some degree figuring out the opposition, but also simply being able to close down all the angles to cut off passes and lure them into playing a pass u can intercept etc.

Unfortunately attacking-wise there is a large degree of programming understanding needed on Fifa, so the creative element isnít as high as u may expect, with longs and crosses being key to my game in London. However u do have to have some kind of foresight when playing and a bit of vision, checking your radar etc to see passes on and also trying to drag players out of position, but the key to being a top player isnít what u do with the ball, but without it, as the European Cyber Games and World Cyber Games showed me.The best way to win is simply nullify your opponents attacks, which I had to learn very quickly in Paris. Stopping such things as longs and crosses are key to everyoneís defensive game.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- Do you think that a player from the UK will ever win the World Cyber Games ?

Adam Reid :- It is possible yes, but not at the moment. From what I have seen players from other countries do put in a different level of practice to that of the UK Players. I think I was up there with sum of the best this year, only just losing to the guy who finished 4th overall, but I think there is an element of practice (Lan practice as well), an element of keeping your cool and also understanding the game. I think these are all better when the competition to qualify is higher, for example if UK had thousands competing (like Germany) we would all be pushed that extra bit to be able to win. So we would learn off each other and also learn more ourselves as we play more. At the moment that intense level of competition isnít really around the UK, but I can definitely see it growing, with a possible UK Winner in the future.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- Which countries do you think are the best at Fifa and why ?

Adam Reid :- Well from European Cyber Games and the World Cyber Games you really have to to say One Country stands out and that is Germany, not only the twins (hero n stylla) but also the rest of there top 10 are probably close to being all in the top 15 in Europe. Of course there are also the Asian countries like Korea and China who were good and I think a lot of it comes down to the competition level they have and also their commitment to practicing.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- Can you tell me how it felt to represent the UK in the World Cyber Games and how it all went ?

Adam Reid :- It did feel quite proud to represent the UK and I was luckily enough to do the flag bearing at the opening ceremony which was good, but when the competition started, it was more about representing myself and doing well for myself, especially as the UK Team (especially the Captain Myers) showed little interest in the Fifa competition. The other UK Fifa Player Pacman was the only team member to even watch any of my games. Although I didnít cover myself with glory in the tournament, I cannot be too disappointed, I was a bit annoyed when I didnít make it thru to last 16, but when you have Two of the eventual semi-finalists in your group, and you only just lose to them (I knew that in context of the competition I was at least as good as the last Sixteen Players and if would of had more luck in the draw I am pretty sure I could of even finished in the top 8, but my aim going into the Tournament was to make the last 16, but 3rd in probably the hardest group was no disgrace, I mean typhoon (Spanish Number 2 Player) is a very good player, maybe could have made the last 16 himself, he finished 4th in the group which really does go to show the strength of it.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy :- Will you be trying hard to retain your championship this year and who do you feel the main danger players are going to be for you ?

Adam Reid :- Well, this yr I did put in the extra effort to make Korea after failing to make it the year before. Even as top seed in London, pad failure prevented me qualifying. So this year I doubt I will be able to fit in as much practice being at university, however I will try to fit in some play and although I would like to retain my title, the real aim is to finish top two and to actually make it to San Francisco. With Pacman retiring from fifa, I feel the main contingent of danger players will be the same as previous years, mainly Fifamasteruk, Fifaapostle, Kotp and maybe Mattyj2k, however with online play increasing year after year and with leagues such as the FTL Academy there could well be some more additions to the usual suspects this year.

Thank you very much Adam for finding the time to do this Interview here with us at the Sweetpatch FTL Academy and from all the Staff we wish you all the best in your quest this Year to retain your Championship Title.

Lazio Thrashed 4-0

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea took a gigantic stride towards qualification for the knock out stages of the Champions league with an emphatic four goal victory over Italian giants in their own backyard.

With Jaap Stam and Peruzzi missing from the Lazio team that recently played at Stamford Bridge, was the opportunity there for Chelsea to take the three points on offer that could secure qualification for the Champions League knockout stages? It surely was and how our brave team proved it.

Ranieri chose to start with Crespo, rumoured to be only 60% fit, this being the only change to the Chelsea team that faced the Italians at Stamford Bridge.

Also with over 4,000 Chelsea followers, travelling by road, sea and air to the historic city, encamped behind one goal in the Olympic Stadium, the scene was set for a remarkable night for those nestling amongst the seven hills of Rome. A gladiatorial effort was certainly required from those players selected. It was produced in an epic performance that far bypassed Ridley Scott's Oscar winning film.

Invasion of Rome

Visit Chelsea mini siteTo say that today's game in the Olympic Stadium is going to be one of those nights to remember could be an understatement. However, much will depend upon the result. A win would see Chelsea virtually guaranteed a position in the next stages; a draw would suffice, whilst a defeat wouldn't be the end of the world. Sadly a loss would no doubt diminish the whole experience of journeying to Rome. However, respite could be sought with games against Sparta Prague (h) and Besiktas (a) to come.

Serie A Wrap: Roma Close On Leaders

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma continued their fine home form with a 2-0 win over Reggina.

Vincenzo Montella put the Giallorossi in front, and John Carew, with his first Serie A goal from open play, put the result beyond doubt.

The match of the day took place at the Rigamonti where a 71st minute goal from Alberto Gilardino gave Parma a 3-2 win over Brescia. Francesco Matuzalem and Domenico Morfeo had exchanged early goals, before Luigi Di Biagio put Brescia back in front on 36. The in-form Marco Marchionni then levelled things up before the break.

Sampdoria continued their respectable start to the campaign as a Christiano Doni strike saw them take all the points at Bologna.

Wins are hard to come by for Perugia at present, and they suffered defeat today as a goal from Riccardo Allegretti downed them at Modena.

Elsewhere, two Javier Chevanton goals -one a penalty- secured a 2-1 win for Lecce against Empoli, while Siena drew 0-0 at Ancona in the battle of the newly promoted teams.

Sweetpatch's Premiership Round-up

Sweetpatch's Soccer SnippetsThe top of the Premiership table remained unchanged on Saturday following an afternoon which saw the top three all win.

Arsenal showed no sympathy for debt-ridden Leeds United's troubled week, demolishing the Yorkshire side 4-1 at Elland Road in a result that will heap yet more pressure on Peter Reid.

Champions Manchester United bounced back from last week's shock home defeat at the hands of Fulham to record a comfortable 3-0 victory over Portsmouth.

Second placed Chelsea were made to work harder for their victory against a determined Everton at Goodison Park. Romanian Adrian Mutu scored the only goal of the afternoon to seal the win, but before that strike Chelsea were never comfortable. The win keeps Chelsea in second place, one point behind leaders Arsenal, and one point ahead of Manchester United, as the Premiership appears to be a clear three horse race.

Newcastle's recent renaissance was stalled by Aston Villa as the Birmingham club held Bobby Robson's men to a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park.

At Saint Mary's Southampton lost at home to in-form Manchester City. Kevin Keegan had mysteriously omitted Nicolas Anelka from the away side's team but the other strikers more than made up for his absence as City came out 2-0 winners, thanks to rare goals from Robbie Fowler and Paulo Wanchope. Keegan's men are now up to fifth.

The league's two lowest scorers met at the Riverside Stadium, as Middlesbrough entertained Wolves, and a 0-0 looked on the cards until a wonder finish from on loan Mendieta broke the deadlock with half an hour to go. Substitute Juninho sealed the win 10 minutes later - 2-0 the final score. Wolves' Alex Rae saw red in the closing minutes to compound a bad day for the Premiership new boys.

In the only other game of the day Bolton moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs losing for the first time under the temporary stewardship of David Pleat. Bolton took the points home from White Hart Lane courtesy of a Kevin Nolan strike, the only goal of the game.

Everton 0 v 1 Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteWith what can only be considered to be a scrappy performance, Chelsea left Goodison Park with three points. The victory ensures that the Londoners remain in second place as they prepare to embark on a trip to Rome for a Champions League game.

However, if Everton had been capable of putting away some of the many chances they created it could well have been a different story. Some woeful finishing, coupled with a few fine saves from Carlo Cudicini, ensured David Moyes experienced another frustrating afternoon.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, namely Everton should have taken an early lead. Once again the culprit was Radzinski. As the travelling supporters contemplated a nerve wracking forty-five minutes, the improbable, based on the first half happened. Chelsea scored.

The goal came after good work down the right flank. With a penetrating cross delivered into the Everton area Hasselbaink missed his opportunity but Mutu managed to bundle the ball home off of a combination of head, arm and the upper body. Goodison Park was silenced as the travelling support acclaimed the Romanian in the usual style. Chants of Mutuuuu, Mutuuuuu, Mutuuuuu filled the air.

After playing the obligatory stoppage time referee Winter called a halt to proceedings. Three more points for Chelsea and the Premiership title dream is still very much a reality.
