Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below:

  • Neil Mellor hit a late winner as Liverpool gained a dramatic 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a breath-taking Barclays Premiership match at Anfield.
  • Martin Jol saw Jermain Defoe inspire Tottenham Hotspur to a first Barclays Premiership win under his reign, a 2-0 victory over 10-man Middlesbrough.
  • Lee Carsley kept Everton's Barclays Premiership title ambitions on track and dented Newcastle United's hopes with a superb equaliser in a 1-1 draw at St James' Park.
  • Shaun Wright-Phillips produced a mesmerising attacking masterclass as Manchester City claimed their first back-to-back Premiership triumph for 19 months with a 2-0 victory over visiting Aston Villa.
  • Norwich City recovered from a first-half battering to snatch a crucial point thanks to Darren Huckerby's fifth goal of the campaign at St Andrews in a 1-1 draw v Birmingham City.
  • Arjan De Zeeuw played a captain's role to the full as the Portsmouth players superbly shrugged off a week of internal turmoil to see off Bolton Wanderers 0-1.
  • Chelsea went five points clear at the top of the Barclays Premiership after destroying Charlton Athletic 0-4 with a superb second-half display.
  • Andreas Jakobsson rescued a point for Southampton from a 2-2 draw just as fellow strugglers Crystal Palace had looked set to leave St Mary's with all three.
  • Bryan Robson's old club Manchester United repaid his years of loyalty by spoiling his big day and marooning West Bromwich Albion at the bottom of the Barclays Premiership after a 0-3 defeat.
  • Blackburn Rovers climbed off the bottom of the Barclays Premiership and dragged Fulham into the early relegation fight with a 2-0 win at Craven Cottage.

Charlton 0 Chelsea 4

Charlton 0 Chelsea 4Chelsea’s biggest win away to Charlton, a first ever brace of goals for John Terry, the first and last being scored by Damien Duff and Eidur Gudjohnsen, this was a top of the League Chelsea performance. It was also the fourth Premiership game in six in which Chelsea had netted four.

Duff scored after 36 seconds against Bolton last week. At The Valley it took him 410 seconds – three minutes 50. Gudjohnsen’s outstanding pass inside Konchesky allowed Duff to motor off the right flank, cut in and slip the ball across the advancing Kiely for his fourth goal of the season.

At the start of the 2nd half Chelsea had a corner, Duff fired in an inswinger and Terry, sprinting towards the near post, headed his fourth goal of the season.

Two minutes later Duff swung a corner he had won to the far post, Carvalho headed it back and Terry touched it in after everyone had missed it. Kiely nearly kept it out but Terry had collected his first brace in a Chelsea shirt.

Gudjohnsen got his goal two minutes before the hour when Robben on the left flank found Lampard who cut the ball through Charlton’s defence for the striker to charge on to and slip over the advancing, spreading Kiely.

Charlton went into the game having won four, drawn two and lost just one of their home games this season. They had won three of their last four at home to Chelsea. Time has changed for both of us, more so maybe for Chelsea. This was a comprehensive victory.

SFTLA @ FIFA Interactive World Cup UK - Part 2

SFTLA @ FIFA Interactive World Cup UKToday we have JPM's account of his experience at the FIFA Interactive World Cup UK last weekend.

"We all (the SFTLA guys) met up in the Arena and it took a good while for the thing to get organised, in the meantime a few of us joined in the 2v2 footy and unfortunately for me I broke my ankle. Hobbling around all day I was then.

With 2 sessions of qualifiers one in the morning and one a few hours later in the afternoon it was game on as Mas, JPM, Colin, Snake, Natalie took to one of the pods with 4 Xbox's on each of its sides. Each player was allocated to a pod along with 23 other hopefuls, it was straight knockout football from the word go, LOSE and you was out although lifelines would be given for the afternoon sesh where you could re-enter.

It was a bad start for the SFTLA as Nat and Snake went out, then the dreaded penalty-shootout seemed to be our downfall as Mas went out on them, then also after reaching the Qualifier Final, Colin also lost on penalties.

I brightened things up though as Stone Cold as you like, with ruthless finishing in front of goal as i dished out some hammerings en route to the last 32 (4-0, 5-1, 7-0, and 6-1 in the Qualifying Final) .

Now it was off to the pub to have a few beers before everyone took part in the afternoon session which the SFTLA Champ took centre stage....

More bad results for the SFTLA as Snake again went out early, then after a superb 3-2 win against former WCG runner-up Pacman - Kotp's old rival, the banana dude Mark tumbled out the competition. Daz suffered a 3rd round exit before Colin again had more penalty nightmares as he threw away the lead twice and spurned some wonderful opportunities to win his Semi-Final in both normal time and extra time. Mas was soon to fall next in his Semi-Final and so it was left to the SFTLA Champ Kotp to brush aside his opponents merrily dancing up and down as he joined JPM in the last 32. A RIGHT TOUCH!!

So it was left to the FTL old-timers Kotp and JPM in separate draws meaning they would avoid each other till the final if we got there. Both played at the same time on different pods and it was mixed fortunes as Kotp lost 1-0 but JPM swept aside his opponent who walked off in disgust when a goal was rifled home in the top corner in the 90th minute to seal a 3-0 win.

With that it was down to me to fly the flag for the SFTLA. But alas it was not to be as with the rules being enforced so strictly now it was impossible for me to play my tactics correctly and i was soon 2-0 down. I didn't give up however and for the last half hour of the game it was all one-way traffic as i searched for goals. I got em both 2-2 10 mins left and it was game on. 5 minutes left with the shocking defence being so far forward due to tactics, the defence was split open like a tin of sardines and nail in the coffin was struck with a breakaway goal as JPM bowed out in the last 16 of the Fifa Interactive World Cup 3-2.

The geezer who beat me went on to win the tournament which sort of makes it look a little better but at the end of the day i'd have whooped the guy if i was able to put me tactics on, he was the winner though and fair dues to him.

All credit to the SFTLA members who attended, you all tried your best, we are PC gamers after all so let's look forward to the World Cyber Games and hold our heads up high cos we done the SFTLA proud no matter that none of us didn't win it, we'll just win the next one instead."

Great review JPM and thanks for sharing it with us all. Also, we have learnt today that JPM and Kotp will be representing the UK (and the SFTLA) next weekend at the French heat of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. Congratulations from us all here and the very best of luck (get practicing now my men).

SFTLA @ FIFA Interactive World Cup UK

SFTLA @ FIFA Interactive World Cup UKStephen Hamilton was one of the SFTLA members who attended the FIFA Interactive World Cup at Earls Court, London on Saturday and below is his account of the day.

"I have never played the Xbox FIFA and all buttons were different from PC but I had a little go on the day, I made it to the last 32 in the afternoon event, going through very good players.

I was playing this bloke and went 2-0 down with in 16 mins in to game. I came back to 2-2, it then went extra time and i went 3-2 down, then I pulled game back to 3-3 and on 120 mins I had clean through chance but keeper saved it and his defender got in front of my attacker as we both slide for the ball, (I had had the better of the game but shooting on Xbox is so different from online PC).

I lost 6-5 on pens. (Damn I was unlucky not to get in final 16) not bad for someone that has never played Xbox game".

Chelsea 2 Bolton 2

Chelsea 2 Bolton 2Last season, Bolton became the first team to win at Stamford Bridge. This season, they became the first to knock two goals past the Blues.

Chelsea have been no strangers to scoring goals from set pieces this season. Conceding goals has not been a problem. To concede two, both from set pieces, absolutely unthinkable.

On an afternoon when Arsenal surprisingly dropped two points at home to West Bromwich Albion, with a two goal cushion how on earth did we end up squandering two points? Clearly deeply disappointed, José Mourinho refused to blame his players for the uncharacteristic blip.

Mourinho though was insistent that despite conceding two goals for the first time this season, the result would not dent the team’s confidence.

FIFA Interactive World Cup: London, 20th November 2004

FIFA Interactive World Cup: London, 20th November 2004There hasn't been an English world champion in football for almost forty years. That could be about to change thanks to the skills of 22-year-old Londoner Paul Gordon, the latest winner in FIFA’s Interactive World Cup.

Paul proved himself the best from over six hundred entrants in the London leg of the inaugural FIFA Interactive World Cup held in Earl’s Court on 20 November. He fought his way through a qualifying round and a final tournament to earn the right to prove himself to be the best in the world the Final to be held in Zurich on 19 December.

After his victory in the final, Paul said there was no better person to represent Britain at the Interactive World Cup final, as he was “The best. The Man.”

Paul Gordon took away his prizes and promised to put in as much practice as is humanly possible, confidently predicting success in Zurich. His confidence and swagger made him a firm crowd favourite throughout the day, and he fired off a warning to the rest of the finalists. “Watch out. The Man is coming.”

See the full story by clicking here, and throughout this week we will have stories and pictures from the SFTLA guys who attended.

Fulham 1 Chelsea 4

Fulham 1 Chelsea 4Another world class Arjen Robben performance, another four goal team performance, another top of the League Saturday afternoon. It was an immaculate Chelsea day.

Arsenal had gone top of the League with their 5-4 win at Tottenham in a midday kick-off, but Chelsea galloped to a convincing victory.

Makelele was held back by Malbranque, and from the resulting free-kick 30 yards out Robben touched it, Duff stopped it and Lampard buried it, striking with the outside of his right foot, the ball flying into the top corner to his right. The lead was fully deserved.

Into the 2nd half and Carvalho headed clear but Bouba Diop volleyed back a 30 yarder past Cech into the bottom corner for an extraordinary equaliser. No defensive blame.

Chelsea, and specifically Robben, took two minutes to regain the lead. He collected a headed clearance, sold a dummy which left two Fulham players on their backsides, dribbled past two more and lashed the ball in from ten yards ("Taxi for 4 Fulham players please at Craven Cottage!"). It was another world class goal from the world class Dutchman. And it was four consecutive games in which he’d scored.

Lampard took a free-kick, sending it bouncing wickedly across the six yard box, and the running, stooping Gallas headed home. Chelsea were in charge and heading back to the top of the League.

Kezman went on for Duff, Robben forced another Crossley save, and then the winger took Tiago’s square pass from the left, made ground in the box, back-heeled the ball and the supporting Tiago running behind him wellied his second goal of the season into the bottom far corner.

For the third time in four League games Chelsea had scored four. The fans warned the Fulham fans of what is to come: “Carling Cup, we’re having a laugh…

Problem with Netherlands kits in Sweetpatch's Rosters 2004/2005 Episode 3

Problem with Netherlands kits in Sweetpatch's Rosters 2004/2005 Episode 3A problem has been identified with regard to the excellent new Netherlands kits that we included with Episode 3 of Sweetpatch's Rosters 2004/2005.

At the moment the Kit Raptor does not allow you to import kits that are not in the game. You therefore have to convert the files to FSH format and assign the kits the Netherlands Id number 105035 and put the 3 kits in the root directory of FIFA 2005.

If you know how to do this then you are ok, but we are currently working on producing a new version of the Rosters to include the kits correctly named.

Apologies for this oversight on my behalf.

Chelsea Football Club launches new badge

Chelsea Football Club launches new badgeChelsea has unveiled a badge intended to represent the club for the next 100 years.

The new design was launched at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea’s chief executive Peter Kenyon, accompanied by life vice-president Lord Attenborough, manager José Mourinho and group business affairs director Paul Smith.

It replaces the previous badge which has been in place since 1986. Prior to that there have been only three official club badges during Chelsea’s 100 year history.

Fans have been keen for many years for a return to the badge first used by the club in 1953 which was also the official badge when the League Championship was won, marking Chelsea’s 50th anniversary in 1955.

Chelsea is delighted to announce that the new badge is based significantly on the 1950s original. It will be effective from May 2005, in time for the club’s Centenary Season and a special Centenary version of the badge will be used during that year.

To see the full press release click here and to see a history of all Chelsea's badges since 1905 watch the image above and visit this page.

Five more years for Terry

Five more years for TerryJohn Terry has committed himself to Chelsea until 2009 by signing a new contract.

Terry, who took on the role of captain following the departure of Marcel Desailly in the summer, signed his previous four-year deal in July 2003 but his progress and standing at Chelsea is such that all concerned were keen that a fresh contract was put in place.

Terry explained: "It was a mutual decision. I only signed last year but I had a chat with Peter Kenyon at the end of last season and with the people who came in since. It has been ongoing but finally it’s all done and all sorted and I'm very happy. I have been here since I was 14 and I would love to stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career and hopefully I'll do that because I love playing for the club. I am just very, very pleased that it’s another five years that I'm going to be here."

Those years will take Terry to the age of 28 and he regards the arrival of José Mourinho as a big influence on him making such a commitment.

"He’s been a key figure in it. He’s come in, he’s made me the club captain this year so on the pitch things are going well and off the pitch things are going really well."

Terry joins Frank Lampard and Eidur Gudjohnsen as existing Chelsea players who have signed fresh, long-term contracts since the beginning of July.

Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below:

  • Manchester United's Barclays Premiership title hopes suffered another blow after Manchester City put in a superb defensive display to ensure the game ended all square at 0-0.
  • Fulham staged a classic smash and grab raid at Newcastle United to claim a stunning 1-4 victory.
  • This entertaining clash ended honours even but only thanks to George Boateng who struck deep in injury time to earn a home 1-1 draw for Middlesbrough v Bolton.
  • Arsenal found themselves trailing in the Barclays Premiership table for the first time this season as their dip in form became a pronounced stumble with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
  • Arjen Robben enhanced his already superb reputation at Chelsea with his second winning goal in the space of five days in a 1-0 win over Everton.
  • Eleven months of heartache for Birmingham City finally came to an end as Liverpool surrendered their 100 per cent Anfield record 0-1 in the Barclays Premiership to a team whose last away victory in the league was in December.
  • Mark Hughes' depleted Blackburn Rovers battled back from Jay Bothroyd's dismissal to earn a point from their 1-1 draw at Norwich City.
  • Robert Earnshaw claimed his first Barclays Premiership goals with two in eight minutes for managerless West Bromwich Albion as they drew 2-2 at Southampton.
  • Martin Jol took temporary charge of Tottenham Hotspur as their miserable 24 hours was compounded by a fourth successive Barclays Premiership defeat, 3-2 to London rivals Charlton Athletic.
  • Portsmouth are still without a win in 35 years at Villa Park after three first-half goals ensured that Aston Villa cemented their place in the top 10 of the Barclays Premiership.

Chelsea 1 v Everton 0

Chelsea 1 v Everton 0Chelsea have piled the pressure on Arsenal after coming out on top in a high intensity encounter of our own. For the second game running it was Arjen Robben who made the difference with the only goal of the match.

The decider came after 71 tense minutes. Chelsea had been presented with opportunities before, Robben himself had hit the woodwork in the first-half, and just prior to the goal Gudjohnsen had sliced a great chance wide.

The one other time Chelsea had played after a European away trip this season we had dropped our only home points of the season in a goalless draw with Spurs. Fears were growing around Stamford Bridge that a repeat performance was on the cards but this time the closing scenes were different, and a whole lot more enjoyable!

Gudjohnsen quickly made amends for his wastefulness when he lofted the perfect ball forward into the path of Robben who with more than enough pace to keep ahead of the defence, raced to a tight angle with goal but still had the calm head and control to loft the ball over Nigel Martyn and into the net.

Throughout the game Chelsea’s new flying Dutchman had looked the man most likely to win the battle between second-place and third.

José Mourinho made changes to the starting eleven at the full-back and right midfield positions, Babayaro, Gallas and Tiago coming in, but he understandably maintained faith in the attacking three that had been banging the goals in for much of the last three games.

Robben at times looked unstoppable in the opening period, this afternoon demonstrating a previously unseen power in his shooting.

Everton had put up good resistance before losing their first away game of the season to an all-round Chelsea team performance. It had been a high tempo, high action encounter. Another 1-0 to the Chelsea, but in these circumstances that felt more than enough.

UEFA Champions League: CSKA Moscow 0 Chelsea 1

UEFA Champions League: CSKA Moscow 0 Chelsea 1Arjen Robben scored a superb goal on his first Chelsea start to make it four Champions League wins out of four in front of a capacity crowd which included former president Boris Yeltsin.

Robben’s goal came after 23 minutes. He ran on to a clever flick-header from Eidur Gudjohnsen and fed Damien Duff ahead of him on the right of the penalty area. Robben raced inside and Duff’s brilliant flick found him, Robben sidestepped a challenge and, running square to the goal, side-footed from 12 yards past a surprised and immobile Igor Akinfeev. It was impudent and outstanding.

For all CSKA’s progress, they couldn't muster a shot on target until six minutes before the interval when Vagner Love turned inside Ricardo Carvalho and smashed a 20 yarder which was brilliantly turned aside at full stretch low to his left by Petr Cech. What a great save!

With a Mexican wave raging round the ground and the klaxons climaxing, it was a red hot cauldron, but out on the pitch Chelsea continued to play the cool, controlled football so associated with Mourinho.

By half-time CSKA had won ten corners. The most against Chelsea in any one game this season had been 11, also by CSKA. If their finishing could match their approach play, they’d be a mighty, fine team.

Immediately they found success, although not in an expected way. Left wing-back Yury Zhirkov raced into the penalty area ahead of Glen Johnson whose attempted slide tackle from behind brought him down. Love placed the ball on the penalty spot, and blasted it so high over the bar that it brought sentimental memories of Kerry Dixon’s effort at Queens Park Rangers in the early 1990s.

The pressure was unrelenting, but Chelsea’s shape stayed strong with John Terry once again awesome at the back. Tiago replaced Parker after 64 minutes and Mateja Kezman went on for Gudjohnsen four minutes later.

Chelsea had just one late shot on target in the second-half and finished up losing the corner count 13-1, yet an away win was thoroughly deserved.

West Brom 1 Chelsea 4

West Brom 1 Chelsea 4A by no means outstanding Chelsea overcame a lethargic start to stroll to a convincing win and go top of the League level with Arsenal with goals by William Gallas, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Damien Duff and Frank Lampard.

Only Gallas and Joe Cole had been in the starting line-up in midweek against West Ham, yet this didn’t look a fresh Chelsea from kick-off. The Albion crowd was pumped up for their caretaker manager, Frank Burrows, and the home side in a 4-4-2 formation played with verve.

There were too many over-hit passes straight to goalkeeper Russell Hoult, however, and by 45 minutes it had been a strangely uneventful game. But in stoppage time, from Chelsea’s fourth corner, that was to change. Lampard’s kick was headed for goal by the diving Terry, and Gallas deflected in for his first goal of the season.

But the indecisiveness of Chelsea’s first-half display couldn’t be hidden, and maybe it was that which persuaded José Mourinho still to make a double substitution at the interval. Wayne Bridge and Cole, neither of whom had been at their best were withdrawn. Gallas moved to left-back and Ricardo Carvalho came on in the centre. In attack Arjen Robben started down the right.

It was a different Blues immediately. The pressure was extreme. Damien Duff made it pay with a well judged lowish cross which the tumbling, unmarked Gudjohnsen headed in. It was his sixth goal of the season. Five minutes of the second-half had gone.

Zoltan Gera fired a left-footer back in across the area into the far corner of the net. That made him Albion’s top scorer this season with three goals. It was just the fourth goal conceded in 15 games.

Albion’s optimism returned. They sent on Scott Dobie for Earnshaw. Chelsea switched Robben and Duff. Three minutes later order was restored as Lampard was gifted the ball just outside his own area, he ran half the length of the pitch unchallenged and unleashed Duff who dinked his second goal of the season past the advancing Hoult.

After that it was the Robben show as he dribbled, crossed, shot and charged at the Albion goal. Robben jinked forward and fed Lampard 25 yards out who drove a low right-footer inside Hoult at the near post for his second goal of the season.

With Chelsea 4-1 up Mourinho rested Lampard for the first time in the League, replacing him with Tiago.

In no time news reached the Chelsea fans that Southampton had come from behind to lead at Arsenal. "We are top of the League, say we are top of the League," they sang. "Chelsea are back," they added.

And then the crescendo. "Oh when the Saints go marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, I want to be in that number when the Saints go marching in."

Typically, Arsenal equalised in the last minute to stay ahead on goal difference. But the Championship battle is hot!
