Sweetpatch's Festive Soccer Snippets

Here we go again
According to the Mirror, Spurs are ready to bid again for Fernando Morientes. This despite the fact chairman Daniel Levy said two weeks ago: "I see very little activity by Spurs or any other Premiership clubs this January."

Read my lips. No new signings
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier says he has 'no intention' of signing any new players during the January transfer window. He told the club's official site: "I trust my staff and my players and I know we have a good enough squad to achieve success."

Household names in their own house
A host of names we've never heard of have been linked with West Brom who are likely to bring in new faces in January. Are you familiar with the likes of El-Karkouri, Udeze or van der Vugdalic? Not even Gary Megson had heard of Vugdalic.

Striker light
Wolves have been hit by the news that Dean Sturridge will be out for up to six weeks with a calf injury. This leaves Wolves with only two fit strikers for the Derby game tomorrow.

Mr Smith's not going to Spurs
Brentford manager Wally Downes has moved to scotch rumours about players leaving the club. Martin Rowlands and Paul Smith were said to be targets of Stoke City and Spurs, but Downes said the stories are just 'terrace talk'.

Pledge your trust
The Supporters' Trust is seeking to increase its funds with a view to supporting the future of professional football in York. That future could involve the Trust having some form of ownership stake in the City's football club.

Football News

Boca Juniors’ striker, Hector Braccamonte, will arrive this weekend to Israel for mutual impressions at the champions, Maccabi Haifa.

Braccamonte, 1.91m, did not get much credit last year at Boca, although he scored 12 goals rising from the bench.

Soccer News

The Boca striker should replace Haifa’s Nigerian striker, Yakubu Ayegbini, who gets many offers from European clubs, including one from a team which met Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen.

Yakubu’s agent said the they turned down the Leverkusen’s offer, and that the Nigerian is preferring the English Premier League.

Another Player who previously played in Haifa, Haim Revivo, which left Turkish giants Fenerbahce, 2 weeks ago cause of an 1M$ debt, turned down an offer from Bundesliga club, Hamburg.

The Hamburg contract was all setup, but Revivo prefers to play at the EPL or go back to Turkey, when he got offers both from Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

Another player which will go to the EPL is Christophe Dugarry , who already started to negotiate a move to England.

Dugarry was linked both to Birmingham and to Manchester City, as City’s manager Kevin Keegen is looking for a striker, and already there are voices that talks about Robbie Fowler moving to Maine Road.

Sweetpatch's Festive Soccer Snippets

Rooney's only stolen the show
Wayne Rooney and teammate Alan Stubbs were recently told to leave a trendy Chelsea estate agency after being mistaken for burglars. One of the staff thought they might be 'casing some joints' to go on the rob.

Professional Footballers' Association deputy chief executive Mick McGuire believes players are in danger of becoming scared to put in hard tackles for fear of facing disciplinary action.

It's more than my job's worth...
Wimbledon's stewards win our Jobsworth of the Year title. Apparently, they prevented four nurses and four Stoke fans with learning difficulties from parking in the club car park meaning the party of eight missed the game.

Oh brother
Swindon Town have signed John Sutton, you know who's brother, from Spurs. Town boss Andy King is hoping Sutton's arrival will add some competition for places up front.

Oxford sell out
Oxford have sold all of their 5,235 tickets for the cup match at Arsenal. They could have another 1,000 but those generous folk at Arsenal insisted Oxford would have to cover for any unsold.

Houl lotta love
Gerard Houllier hasn't played the same team in two consecutive league matches for two years. Meanwhile, he has hailed Steven Gerrard's return to form and said: "We have missed him in some games and it is special now he is back"

No Bati Boy for Hammers
Don Hutchinson and Fredi Kanoute may well figure in West Ham's vital clash against Bolton. But Hammers boss Glenn Roeder has denied stories linking the club with a bid for Gabriel Batistuta.

No wonder there's so much crime...
Charlton Athletic are to send a dozen of their own stewards to Saturday's match at Birmingham City after learning there would be no police in attendance at St Andrews.

What goes around...
Laurent Charvet is having a trial with Ipswich. Town boss Joe Royle said: "I bought him at Manchester City but things haven't worked out for him there." That may be on account of him not exactly being the star performer at City.

Your past will come back to haunt you
Keith Curle has made his first long-term signing as Mansfield boss, snapping up Pompey midfielder Tom Curtis who will arrive at Field Mill on a free. Mansfield supporters would probably prefer to forget Curtis once played for Chesterfield.

For Sale: Torquay United
Mike Bateson, who has been majority owner of Torquay United for almost 13 years, has announced his intention to "dispose" of his majority interest in the club. It is not stated whether his ventriloquist dummy, Algernon, comes as part of the package.

With a battle against relegation looking likely, Bolton boss Sam Allardyce needs all hands on deck and has stated that Michael Ricketts has not handed in a transfer reuqest.

  • a new Journal tool that allows all members to keep public records of whatever they want. It is designed for patchmakers to keep people updated with their various projects, but can be used for any purpose
  • at the top of the main page there are now easy links to the latest forum posts and news topics to save you some time
  • on every page there is now a staff block so you can easily get in touch with our various staff members.

They hope everyone takes the time to register, as in the next few days they will start releasing exclusive downloads to members.

My good friend Dimitris from the ECP Team is happy to inform us that with the forthcoming ECP re launch is imminent. Meanwhile they are providing the FIFA community with 2 new utilities for FIFA Football (Soccer) 2003.

ECP Access Editor v1.0
The first, Access Editor, made by Maniac of the ECP Team and also FIFA Bosnia, is an editor for the dev_all_data.mdb file, which is used by the Official Creation Centre. Made from Access forms, it allows you to edit everything you can with simple editing of the database, but more, it has a great interface matched by no other editor alike.

The program consists of a main menu, which allows the user to navigate between forms. And within each form, all functions are extremely user-friendly, with a lot of remarks and commenting, helping even the least experienced users. And for the experts, you can edit almost everything in the FIFA 2003 database, what more could you want?

ScreenshotsClick for larger imageClick for larger image

ECP GoFSH v1.0
Second, a program made by Hercules, GoFSH! (also part of ECP Works), is a .fsh file viewer/exporter. As many in the FIFA community might know, EA Sports has implemented a new file format on many of the .fsh shape files. Therefore, many of the previously popular programs are no longer compatible. This is where GoFSH! is useful. Although still in its early days, GoFSH! can view all .fsh files which only has one image. These include all the kits, faces files and many more (NOTE: flags .fsh files have more than one image, thus it is not supported yet). The user can view .fsh files with a simple double-click and export them to .bmp format if they wish.

With 2 programs released simultaneously, there is still many more to come in the immediate future at ECP. A newer version of Access Editor is already in the making, with possible new functionality, such as face previews, added. And GoFSH! also has a second version coming soon, making it fully compatible with all .fsh files, i.e. including flags .fsh files. Look out for all future and current releases at the home of the ECP Patch.

Sweetpatch's Soccer Snippets

Trouble n' strife
According to boss Howard Wilkinson, Sunderland's Kevin Phillips has no plans to quit the club. Apparently the striker's gesture on Monday night was a disappointed 'shrug' aimed at Wilko's wife rather than a parting shot.

On no wings and a prayer
Gerard Houllier says he won't change his system as Liverpool try to get back on track. "I am not am not going to play a 3-5-2," he says. Fair enough. But some still wonder why Heskey's on the left, Smicer's on the pitch and Diomede's at the club.

Cut price cup
Southampton have cut prices for the arrival of Spurs in the FA Cup. With the match being screened live on BBC1 could there have been a fear of not getting a full house at St Mary's?

MK OK?
It may come as a surprise to people at the National Hockey Stadium who were in the process of sorting out a new astroturf pitch, but Wimbledon FC would like to play there having abandoned plans to play at the Milton Keynes Bowl.

'Cowards and people of low standards'
Carlisle chairman George Courtnay has branded Hartlepool cowards and people of low standards. 'Pool refused to switch a game with Scunthorpe that clashed with Carlisle's cup replay with the Irons which Sky wanted to screen. Therefore no TV, no money.

The Naked Truth
Boston's players have stripped for the camera for a charity calendar. A selection of pros have posed naked with only footballs protecting their modesty. The club said there were no lack of players willing to offer their, erm, services...

End of spends for Souness
Following the arrival of yet another striker, Graeme Souness has been told by the Blackburn board that he'll have to sell before he spends on minor issues like the defence.

Celebrity Fit Club
Very soon Terry Venables will have a fully fit squad to choose from. Fowler and Bridges are back and Lucas Radebe is on the verge of a surprise return to action. Mark Viduka is also back and the bunting is out for the return of Seth Johnson...

Mother's Pride
Anyway, Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison has revealed the driving force behind his career - his mother.

And the next club set for administration is...
...Port Vale. The news breaks following the announcement that Vale has been unable to pay £590,000 to Customs and Excise and the Inland Revenue.

Pay as you play?
Leeds United PLC's deputy chairman, Allan Leighton, reckons performance-related pay might be the way forward for football. They'd certainly be saving a fortune at Elland Road. Leighton is also chairman of Consignia.

No bid for young star
Confusion reigns over an alleged bid for Swansea's starlet Jamie Rewbury. The press stated the Swans turned down a £250K bid from Portsmouth, but the club have now stated they received no such enquiry.

Transfer News and Views

With January's transfer window drawing closer, Barclaycard Premiership clubs are on the lookout for new players and 4thegame brings you the latest news, rumour and hearsay from the transfer market.

Aiming for Aimar?
Who? - Pablo Aimar
Where is he? - Valencia
Who is linked to him? - Big English clubs

Valencia's Argentinean star Pablo Aimar could be on his way to the Barclaycard Premiership, according to his agent.

Can't get enough of that lovely Diouf
Who? - El Hadji Diouf
Where is he? - Liverpool
Who is linked to him? - Marseille

He may have only joined Gerard Houllier's men in the summer, but there are already rumours that El Hadji Diouf will be heading back to France soon.

De Pedro No-Go
Who? - Javier De Pedro
Where is he? - Real Sociedad
Who is linked to him? - Newcastle United

Spanish midfielder Javier De Pedro has been linked with Newcastle over the last week, but it seems that they will not be able to tempt him away from La Liga table-toppers Real Sociedad.

Rustu feeling blue
Who? - Rustu Recber
Where is he? - Fenerbahce
Who was linked to him? - Arsenal and Manchester United

One of the stars of the World Cup, Turkish keeper Rustu Recber almost single (or should that be double?) -handedly guided the team to the semi-finals and a third place finish.

Juve gotta be kidding
Who? - Patrick Vieira
Where is he? - Arsenal
Who might he "one day" join? - Juventus

Sometimes you get the feeling that, short of getting an Arsenal tattoo on his forehead and chaining himself to the Highbury fences, Patrick Vieira cannot convince some sections of the media that he wants to stay with the champions.

Bunch of Cisses
Who? - Djibril Cisse
Where is he? - Auxerre
Where is he going? - Absolutely nowhere

The Barclaycard Premiership's contingent of players called "Cisse" doesn't look to be growing any further despite persistent rumours.

Is he still there?
Who? - Francis Jeffers
Where is he? - Arsenal
Where does he want to be? - A team without Henry, Bergkamp, Wiltord and Kanu ahead of him

£10 million pounds is a lot of money to pay for a reserve, but that is what Arsenal got in Franny Jeffers.

Di Canio won't go
Who? - Paolo di Canio
Where is he? - West Ham
Who is linked to him? - Birmingham City

Paolo di Canio's future has been the subject of much speculation this season, as his contract negotiations have seemed to be going nowhere, and with West Ham struggling, it would not be surprising to see him packing his bags.

Check for further details on all of these rumours and more over at 4thegame.

The EA Insider this month talks to the FIFA Football 2003™ community manager

EA have this month interviewed our great friend from Soccer Gaming, Mr Matt Holme in their monthly e-zine. The interview goes something like this:

So... how do you plan to support FIFA fans online?
The feeling amongst the FIFA community was that although EA were producing some popular FIFA games, the fans themselves were finding it difficult to communicate directly with EA SPORTS™. My aim as FIFA Community Manager is to make sure that the FIFA fans realise that EA SPORTS are actively taking in their feedback and really are listening to their concerns and ideas.

For the future there's going to be regular forum chat sessions with the producers and developers of FIFA games as well as passing on any important feedback or ideas that the fans are raising in the forums.

And I'll be in regular contact with the webmasters and members of FIFA fan sites to assist them with any FIFA or EA SPORTS queries.

As FIFA Community Manager one of my first jobs was to help set up the FIFA Community website. For the first time FIFA fan sites are now being listed on the official FIFA FOOTBALL 2003 website which is certainly increasing hits to FIFA community sites.

How do you see the community growing?
The downloadable FIFA FOOTBALL 2003 editor known as the Creation Centre is assisting FIFA patch makers in editing and adding new leagues, teams and players to FIFA 2003. I stay in touch with the brains behind the Creation Centre making sure that features the fans are requesting are included in future versions of the editor.

What are the benefits of being involved with the FIFA community from a players perspective (For 1st timers)?
The FIFA community is by far one of the most passionate and exciting communities on the internet today. With literally 1000's of third-party patches and updates available for all your FIFA games, and incredibly active fan sites and message boards open to everyone, it doesn't matter if you a casual or serious FIFA gamer, you'll enjoy being part of the FIFA community.

I would have to say that the main benefit of being part of the FIFA community is learning first hand the exciting developments in FIFA games through some of the incredible patches that are being released each day. Best of all, you're able to keep your copy of FIFA FOOTBALL 2003 completely up to date with the latest team rosters and your club's latest kits.

On top of this, you get to communicate your ideas and suggestions for future EA SPORTS FIFA games and meet some terrific people in the forums.

Nice interview Matt. Check out the Soccer Gaming network as it gradually comes back online over the next few days.

Setting the record straight
My beloved Chelsea have tried to put the record straight over Carlton Cole's loan move to Wolves. They say it wasn't, as their 'friends' at the Mirror reported, down to turning up late for the reserves, but for more first-team experience.

Bellamy's five-year plan
Craig Bellamy has agreed to a new five-year deal with Newcastle according to reports in the north-east. The club have neither confirmed nor denied the story.

Spend, spend, spend
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has no understanding of the word 'recession'. He says he intends to carry on spending as Portsmouth head towards the Premiership.

Britton goes to Wales
Swansea City are set to sign Leon Britton (not the former Tory minister) on loan after bringing the West Ham midfielder to the Vetch Field for a four-day trial.

Kirkland claims Jerzy's jersey
Gerard Houllier has confirmed Chris Kirkland will get a 'run of games' in the first team. It is expected this will start with the Worthington Cup match against Ipswich.

The City boss has dismissed stories linking him with a bid for Robbie Fowler. He added the club has a few 'irons in the fire' but they appear to be on the continent.

Managing his future
Steve Staunton has set himself the long-term goal of becoming the Republic of Ireland manager. Meanwhile, all the money in the past week or so has been on John Aldridge to get the job.

Another week, another club linked with Les Ferdinand. Now Portsmouth are, apparently, on the verge of signing the Spurs striker until the end of the season. But Pompey has definitely given up on signing Taribo West.

Trio back for Blues

Following trouble at Oxford before their game with Lincoln, Rob Bradley (Lincoln chairman) has said the club will endeavour to ban those involved in the scuffles.
