Chelsea favourites to sign Defoe

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea have emerged as favourites to sign Jermain Defoe when the transfer window reopens in January ahead of among others Premiership Champions Manchester United and Italian giants Inter Milan.

Defoe, 21, is valued at around £8 million despite enduring a tough season with Division 1 promotion contenders West Ham United.

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Defoe after their boxing day 4-2 massacre at the hands of Charlton, and are expected to approach West Ham when the transfer window reopens in January.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may look to strengthen his strike force elsewhere, with Fulham’s Louis Saha, Leeds’ Mark Viduka and Patrick Kluivert of Barcelona likely targets.

Defoe himself would favour a move to Chelsea in order to link up with former West Ham team-mates Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Glen Johnson already at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea 3 v 0 Portsmouth

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea’s Christmas spirits were lifted in yesterday’s early Stamford Bridge kick-off by three second-half goals, each a beauty in its own way.

Wayne Bridge was the first to strike following a determined run, a precious goal for him, then Frank Lampard finished off a flowing break before Geremi’s spectacular long-range curler went a long way towards banishing the memories of the Charlton debacle.

By the end there could have been more goals and the confidence that had been flowing through the team just a couple of weeks ago returning.

A three-goal win at half-time had looked highly unlikely yet by the final whistle, the victory was comfortable and comforting. It had been an excellent remedy for that big, big Boxing Day hangover.

Charlton 4 v 2 Chelsea

Happy Chelsea ChristmasChelsea lacked the punch this Boxing Day clash needed going down 4-2 to a buoyant Charlton side in what could be considered our poorest performance of the season so far.

Despite cold conditions an atmosphere full of festive cheer greeted the teams for the London derby and it didn’t take long for the game to turn into a cracker.

Just 42 seconds after Graham Poll had signalled the start Charlton took advantage of their second corner, the first had been cleared by Jesper Gronkjaer, to give Alan Curbishley the Christmas present he would have most wanted. Paolo Di Canio delivered the ball in from the left-hand side where Hermann Hreidarsson rose above John Terry to head beyond Carlo Cudicini.

Adrian Mutu took the resulting free-kick swinging the ball into the area where the diving head of John Terry evaded his marker Chris Perry to give Chelsea our equaliser.

The warning signs were there, Charlton were looking dangerous especially in the air, then with 34 minutes gone a Charlton ball forward aided by a clever Di Canio step-over clipped John Terry and fell into the path of Jonathan Johansson whose deflected cross into the box was met by Charlton captain Matt Holland. Holland on the run had risen behind Marcel Desailly, and made no mistake with his header and defeated Cudicini to score his third of the season.

Eidur Gudjohnsen returned from a lengthy period out after badly twisted ankle coming on for Jesper Gronkjaer for the second-half. His task to overturn the deficit was made even harder after 47 minutes when once more Charlton proved to be the first out of the blocks. Joe Cole lost possession in midfield to Scott Parker who passed the ball out to dangerman Di Canio, he weaved his way beyond Terry and Johnson for his cross to be met by the impressive Jonatan Johansson to score Charlton’s third.

Three was soon turned into four. The Valley was still rejoicing from when a 53rd minute deflected ball off Wayne Bridge provided Jason Euell with the perfect break. Once he had the ball and was away there was hardly any doubt as to where it would end up, his strike was quickly placed beyond Cudicini to give Charlton a healthy three goal cushion.

Finally sub Gudjohnsen did find a way through with it proving to be third time lucky on 72 minutes. A great ball from John Terry went to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who passed to Adrian Mutu on the right-hand side who went past Fortune but his effort was saved by Kiely. The rebound went out to Geremi on the right who played the ball back to Gudjohnsen who drove home Chelsea’s second.

This may have been the third defeat of the season but there is no crisis yet, we are still third in the league but better concentration and a positive reaction will be required at Stamford Bridge against Portsmouth on Sunday.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy PC Leagues - Preview

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League Premiership
Looks very interesting indeed especially now Reidy is gonna put alot of pressure on the old boys of FTL and past winners of KOTP and JPM will have to play to there very top potential to prevent the present UK FIFA champ, but that was in 03 and this 04 is a totally new ball game and does leave the Premiership wide open and it might not be a foregone conclusion, especially with old and new players having something to prove. The teams to watch out for in this division will be Spurs (KOTP) Cheltenham (Reidy) Ajax (JPM) Inter (Shaf) and Feyenoord (Kev)

Division 1
This division is probably going to be the most interesting of them all with a lot of the players very well matched. The reports say from friendlies played that Celtic (Mad Jock) will be one of the favourites to claim promotion but also with good performances from Colin (Blackburn) and Rich (Valencia) and Scatty (Boca Juniors) from the Tourny these teams will be the ones to look out for in this division. Also Forrest, Liverpool and Chelsea are well capable to cause some upset amongst the top teams.

Division 2
This division is more of an unknown quantity really with a lot of new lads and former FTL members and not much known about their skills in FIFA 2004. Again the reports suggest on friendlies being played that Bradders of Macclesfield will be a clear fav as he is actually competing with some of the higher divisions and getting good results. After him there will be Winty an old school now at FTL matches online and should use his experience to good effect and should be competing for a promotion place with Benfica. Also teams too watch will be Barcelona and Newcastle.

All in all a very exciting PC SFTLA league, which is due to start in the 2nd week of January and promises to be as exciting as the day to day drama of real football we go and see or hear or watch on the TV.

Sweetpatch FTL Academy Pre-Season Tourny Play-Off for PC League

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League Sweetpatch FTL Academy Pre-Season Tourny Play-Off was to decide the new players and what division they would compete in in the forth coming SFTLA season, which starts in January 2004.

The standard was fairly high as we had 2 FIFA UK champions, one past and one present. Appostle, who was past UK champ though decided last minute it wasn’t for him and was replaced, but Reidy (present 03 FIFA UK champ) was raring to go and was the man to beat and compete with for only 2 SFTLA Premiership places up for grabs.

Phase 1
12 new players entered and competed in this Tourny and as expected Reidy set the pace coming top of his Group A with a 100% record and scoring 16 goals and conceding 0 in 3 games, very impressive indeed. Alex came runner up and qualified for next phase also but must of felt he was little out of his depth but done well to get through.

Group B was very interesting as it contained 3 experienced FIFA players, who have never played against each other, and a last minute replacement. Colin used his experience of past online FIFA playing to top the league with a 100% record. Runner up was Scatty with 2 wins which was enough to see him through.

Group C wasn’t being out done and also had 100% group winner in Rich, who also like Colin is an experienced FIFA player, and took full advantage of this and was looking in fine form for phase 2. Patrick from Ireland came runner up and by all accounts gave the group winner a run for his money.

Phase 2
So phase 2 was set up and Group 1 was set up to be a cracker with Reidy and Rich with 100% records and Scatty with 2 wins to his name looked as if he could compete as well. With only one from each group in phase 2 to claim a Premiership place and to go forward into the Tourny final no player could afford a slip up and Reidy having a reputation to hold was far too strong for the 2 lads in his group and won 4-1 v Rich and 5-0 v Scatty and made it to the final and expectedly claiming 1 of 2 Premiership places, but give Rich some credit as he managed to score the only goal against the present UK FIFA champ.

Group 2 was much tighter and it came down to an actual written rule from the present F.A. Premiership league where it states:

FA Rules Section 1.1 - If Two or more Teams are Tied for 1st Position, Goal Difference then Goals Scored are taken into account to decide the overall Winner.

Therefore when Col and Patrick had identical records drawing 0-0 themselves and beating Alex 2-0 and 3-1 it came down to that rule which in all fairness was a bit harsh on Colin but accepted it like a true sportsman and said "No probs ill just win div 1 instead and get promotion that way". Patrick scoring 1 more goal than Colin took him through to the Tourny final to face Reidy at a later date, but also got him the last Premiership place.

Ranieri backs Terry for Engalnd

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea boss Claudio Ranieri believes John Terry is ready to become an international regular.

With Rio Ferdinand's England future on indefinite hold, there is a gap to be filled in Sven-Goran Eriksson's defence.

Terry maintained his recent outstanding form with another sound display as the Blues ended a run of three matches without a win with a 1-0 triumph over Fulham.

And Ranieri said: "John has improved a lot. I don't want to compare John to Rio Ferdinand - but he deserves to play for England even without what has happened. He is good in the air, good with his feet and understands when he must stop opponents. In my mind, he is one of the best centre-backs in England."

SFTLA Premiership (Week 4 Update)

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueBottom , but by no means Down. That's the Clear Message coming from the Barcelona Manager Lee this week after they nearly put a huge spanner in the Juventus Title Bid. Barcelona really do look to have turned the corner despite defeat here against League Leaders Juventus. Barcelona shocked the Juventus crowd by taking a shock lead on 26mins when Kluivert opened up Barcelona's account, and just 13mins later Barcelona were awarded with a Penalty !.

Ronaldhino stepped up but was out guessed by the Juventus Keeper who went the right way and amazingly kept it out. This no doubt shook the League Leaders up as on the stroke of half time Tacchiniardi found space and fired home the equaliser to take both teams into the half time cup of tea one goal a piece.

The second half was just as tight as the first but Juventus gained the upper hand when Del Piero slotted home much to the fans delight and give his side what would turn out to be a very important goal to take the score to 2-1. Barcelona rallied and really must of been cursing their luck moments later when a golden opportunity from 6yrds out was somehow hit against the Juventus post and the game ended 2-1 to put Juventus  back at the top of the table.

In other news , Valencia played host to Title Contenders Real Madrid and this too turned out to be more than a foregone conclusion as Valencia made things very difficult indeed for the visitors. An early goal on 6mins by Ronaldo gave the visitors the perfect start to this match , but as the game progressed Valencia were proving a rather tough nut to crack as the 1st Half came to end with Ronaldo's early strike the only difference between the two sides.

The second half got underway and there still seemed to be no way through the Valencia's back four , things then became to look very desperate for Real Madrid as on 83mins they were reduced to 10 men after Pavon was shown a straight Red for what was seen to be a professional foul. Valencia pressed forward in numbers in the hope of grabbing that vital equaliser but great defending by the Real Madrid side saw them weather the storm and in Injury time a decisive counter attack saw them breach the Valencia defence and seal all 3pts to keep them firmly in the hunt for Premiership Title.

SFTLA PC Playoff Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

Phase 1 of the much anticipated ''Playoff Tournament' has now taken place. From the results early indications point to 2003 UK Fifa Champion Reidy looking very good after a very impressive start in Phase 1 and being the only player yet to concede a goal. Colin and Rich are hot on the heels of Reidy after they too had impressive Phase 1 results.

Something will have to give in Phase 2 as we see Reidy and Rich are now both paired up against each other in Group 1. Colin managed to avoid both of these and must be favourite to win Group 2 although nothing is ever a foregone conclusion in football as we all know , so the next few days will certainly be interesting ones.

We at Sweetpatch FTL Academy would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Players involved inPhase 2 the very best of luck and may the best Player be Victorious.

Possible Transfer Targets

Visit Chelsea mini siteAfter Chelsea's acting chief executive, Paul Smith revealed that a central defender and a midfielder are the club's main priorities in the new year sales, the newspapers have retaliated by insisting that Juventus striker David Trezeguet is a more likely target. This is even despite Smith's insistence that only players eligible for the Champions League would be considered, seemingly ruling out Trezeguet.

However, Chelsea's show of financial bravado yesterday has got the tabloids worked up, especially his hint about Ruud van Nistelrooy (also ineligible for Europe...) after Smith declared:

"If Pele was on the market today for £100million then we'd maybe go for him, but we won't pay £30million for Joe Nobody.

If Ruud van Nistelrooy was priced at £60million and we considered it a good investment, then we would probably pay that.

It's not about the fee but about getting good value. We want the right quality and the right value. We do care about the money and it's a misconception that we don't. There's not a finite budget but we want to get good value. Roman is a businessman and is determined not to get ripped off. We won't pay the tourist price.

We're looking to strengthen the midfield as Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele are looking a bit tired. If Emmanuel Petit and Juan Sebastian Veron were fit there wouldn't be a problem and we need to know when they'll be back. We also like Roberto Ayala and had a look at him but unfortunately he's cup-tied after playing in the UEFA Cup.

We want players who are available for our Champions League campaign."

SFTLA PS2 Premiership Week 3 Update Continued

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueToday I continue the update to the goings on from Week 3 of the  SFTLA PS2 Premiership.

As we saw , things were really coming to the boil between Managers Muscolini (Real Madrid) & Exhibitionist (AC Milan). The Real Madrid Manager was very keen to play this match , but for some reason the AC Milan Manager looked as if he was hiding. Things became even more interesting when the game was finally played. Real Madrid won the Match 2-0 , but the Match had been played on the Wrong Settings.

This sparked off even more debate and banter by both Managers and this was certainly turning out to be a Grudge Match. After consultation with the SFTLA PS2 Premiership Governing Body It was decided that the Match was to be replayed.

The Game took place moments after and what a Game this turned out to be.AC Milan struck as early as the 1st Minute to take the lead when Rui Costa blasted home. Just 5mins later Raul equalised to make it 1-1 and this was already turning out to be Match of the Week. Ronaldo pounced on 18mins to give Real Madrid a 1-2 lead, but AC Milan weren't finished either and on 40mins Pirlo struck home to tie things up at 2-2.

An incredible 1st Half was wrapped up in Injury time when Ronaldo again found space and fired home to take Real Madrid into the dressing rooms 2-3 up. Five goals in one Half clearly showed the adrenaline that must of been filling both players veins and even more goals and controversy were to follow in the 2nd Half.

64mins on the clock and Raul grabs his 2nd of the game to putReal Madrid into a comfortable two goal lead, this must of rocked the AC Milan side as 7mins later Figo wrapped things up to bring the score to 2-5. This must of been the final straw for the AC Milan side as what followed next could only of been due to sheer frustration. Nesta was shown a straight Red and Maldini escaped with aYellow as the Milan side seemed to turn into players possessed as they tried on every occasion to do damage to the Real Madrid Players.

The Final whistle went with the final score AC Milan 2 - 5 Real Madrid in what was an incredible match full of controversy.

Colombian striker gives Villa Angel-ic Christmas present

Visit Chelsea mini siteColombian striker Juan Pablo Angel's third goal in two games sent Premiership strugglers Aston Villa on their way to a 2-1 English League Cup quarter-final win against high-flying Premiership rivals Chelsea.

The result was Chelsea's second defeat in five days as Claudio Ranieri's expensively assembled side saw one chance of domestic silverware pass them by at Villa Park.

Villa midfielder Gavin McCann scored the home team's winner 12 minutes from time following more good work by Angel after Joe Cole levelled for Chelsea in the 69th minute.

But it needed some sharp work from Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen in the closing minutes to repel John Terry's goalbound header.

Afterwards Ranieri defended his tactics which saw Chelsea start with an unusual 3-4-2-1 formation with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - who scored the only goal in their Premiership meeting earlier this season - the lone striker.

"Everything was wrong for us. We tried to win the match but Villa played better than us," Ranieri told Sky Sports. "It wasn't because of our system - Angel played fantastically. We put them under pressure in the second half and when we equalised I was sure we could win, but Villa had a very big heart and won the match."

SFTLA PS2 Premiership Week 3 Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueToday I bring you an Update to how things are progressing in Week 3 of the SFTLA PS2 Premiership

Manager Oooter and the mighty Juventus went Top of the League this week after Juventus destroyed Man Utd 5-1 at home , with Trezeguet being awarded with the match ball after the game for a very impressive Hat-Trick.

Excellent news for Chelsea fans as a very workmanlike performance at home saw them secure their first win of the season here against Inter as early 1st Half Strikes from Crespo and Mutu took the home side into the dressing room at Half Time with a comfortable 2-0 lead. I'm sure the Chelsea Manager Tazza made it very clear to his players how important it was to hold this lead and the players didn't let their Manager down as they defended stoutly to also pick up their first Clean Sheet of the Season.

Liverpool are beginning to find things tough going after their Week 1 victory and were again found wanting by Valencia The teams were deadlocked at the interval , but the Half Time cups of Tea seemed to have done the trick for the Valencia side when Baraja opened up the scoring on 63mins. Drama was to follow and in the last Ten Minutes of the game Liverpool looked to have been handed a Life Line by Referee Frisk as they were awarded a Penalty. Michael Owen placed the ball , but his shot was Amazingly Saved and this miss was punished in they dying moments when Baraja again fired home to earn his team a valuable away win. I'm sure after this game Liverpool will be changing their Half Time Tea Bags for future visiting sides.

Real Madrid are desperate for a Win in their upcoming fixture against AC Milan to keep up the pressure on the Juventus side. Unfortunately it seems that the AC Milan Manager Exhibitionist is in hiding and comments from the Real Madrid camp are that Milan are too scared to play this fixture. Milan have until Thursday 18th December to play this fixture or face expulsion from the League , it certainly will be an interesting few days.

The only other reaming match is between Barcelona v Boca Juniors and this match is pencilled in to be played this coming Thursday evening.

Chelsea 1 v 2 Bolton

Visit Chelsea mini siteBolton became the first team to win at Stamford Bridge in the league this season with this 2-1 victory to help knock Chelsea off the top of the Barclaycard Premiership.

It looked like business as usual for Claudio Ranieri's all-stars when Hernan Crespo headed them in front after 21 minutes.

However, Sam Allardyce's teams are made of sterner stuff and Bruno N'Gotty headed an equaliser after 39 minutes following some slack Chelsea marking at a free-kick.

Allardyce probably would have been delighted with a point, but with just two minutes remaining John Terry deflected a Kevin Davies cross into his own net.

It's Stuttgart in the Champions League

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea were the first seeded team pulled out of the hat on Friday and we go to Stuttgart in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stage.

Stuttgart will be looking for revenge, of course, following the 1998 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final when we won 1-0 in Stockholm. We have never met over two legs.

The first leg is away on Wednesday February 25th and the second leg at Stamford Bridge is on Tuesday March 9th.

Claudio Ranieri, reacting to the draw said: "It is not easy but I said before the draw that every squad is good. It will be important to see our condition when we play Stuttgart but if we are strong like now, I am very confident. I don't know if it is better to be playing away the first game but maybe for us it is because so far we have won all our Champions League games away."

The full draw is:

  • Stuttgart v Chelsea
  • Porto v Man Utd
  • Real Sociedad v Lyon
  • Celta Vigo v Arsenal
  • Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
  • Sparta Prague v Milan
  • Deportivo La Coruna v Juventus
  • Lokomotiv Moscow v Monaco

Pav-ing the way for Sven?

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea are in hot pursuit of Juventus' Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved according to the player's agent. Zdenek Nehoda told The Sun that the wealthy west Londoners are tracking Nedved after advice from England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The newspaper reports that the club are prepared to pay £25million for the player. "Juventus' director general Luciano Moggi told me Chelsea want Pavel and although the answer has been no, they simply won't go away," he said. "The desire to have him is very strong and apparently Eriksson keeps on advising Roman Abramovich that Pavel is vital."

Eriksson has been consistently linked with the manager's job at Stamford Bridge ever since he was photographed visiting Abramovich's London residence with top soccer agent Pini Zahavi. The rumours have been quelled by the success of current coach Claudio Ranieri, who has led Chelsea to the top of the Barclaycard Premiership and into the last 16 of the Champions League.

However, Nedved played under Eriksson at Lazio and was identified by the Swede as one of six key players who could most hurt England's chances of success at Euro 2004. Nehoda added: "It is clear why Eriksson would say this because he knows Pavel very well. And how is Nedved playing at Juventus? Not well - brilliantly. Pavel has a contract until 2006 and intends to respect it but everything can change so quickly in football. It is true that before Chelsea came in for Pavel, Juventus did make a tentative offer to bring forward contract extension talks but Pavel said no and continues to feel the same way."

Week 2 Update Continued ...

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueAs promised earlier in the Week 2 Updates here is the details from the remaining fixture Juventus v Liverpool. Juventus go top of the PS2 SFTLA Premiership Table tonight after an emphatic 5-0 demolition over Liverpool. Del Piero got Juventus underway with an emphatic strike on 37mins , Trezeguet added the second 8mins later on the stroke of Half Time to send the home side into the dressing room with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The Second Half saw even more goals from Juve as Man of the Match Di Vaio grabbed a brace and Nedved wrapped things up late on to seal the 5-0 win. Liverpool Manager gave an interview after the game and was very upset with his performance and blamed it on a faulty pad , im sure that the Liverpool Manager will make sure in future Matches that all his game pads are in full working order before playing an important match.

To add even more excitement and tension to the Tournament , we have now uploaded the SFTLA Premiership Golden Boot Top Goal scorers Table , as you will see Real Madrid and Juventus both have a few players listed in this list but who will be awarded the SFTLA Premiership Golden Boot Award come the end of the Season ? Stay tuned to find out.

Chelsea seal top spot as Besiktas crash out

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea's multi-million pound collection of stars turned in a professional display to record a late 2-0 win over Besiktas and qualify for the last sixteen of the Champions League as group winners.

The Premiership leaders had already qualified for the knockout phase of the competition but garnered another confidence-boosting win thanks to late goals from Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink and Wayne Bridge.

Chelsea should now in theory have an advantageous draw for the knockout phase avoiding the likes of reigning champions AC Milan and Spanish titans Real Madrid.

Irish substitute Damien Duff, who had only been on the pitch several minutes, fed Hasselbaink on 77 minutes and the Dutchman lashed home to break the deadlock.

Then with five minutes remaining England international Wayne Bridge drilled home a left-footed shot to sink Besiktas.

While the loss deflated the Turks the news that Sparta Prague had scored a last minute winner to beat Lazio 1-0 in the other group match left them heartbroken, as they parachuted into third place and the UEFA Cup.

Having invested 111 million pounds (191 million dollars) in the close season Chelsea will hope to progress into the latter stages of Europe's premier competition and go further than 2000 when they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Barcelona 6-4 on aggregate.

Chelsea's Russian billonaire backer Roman Abramovich will be crossing his fingers that he is back at this venue come May 26 2004 for the final.

Playstation 2 SFTLA Premiership Update

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueHere is an update as to what has been happening in our exciting SFTLA Premiership Division from Week 2.

Week 1 leaders Real Madrid entertained Chelsea and what a match this was, Real Madrid firmly stamped their authority on this match by hammering Chelsea 4-0 and I'm sure this sent out a clear message to other Managers in the League that they aren't going to give up the top spot without a battle.

AC Milan were found wanting on their travels to Inter as an Alvero Recoba strike on 53 mins sealed all 3pts for Inter and their first win of the Season that moved them out the bottom three.

Valencia were another side that found themselves in the bottom three after week 1 and had it not been for lack lustre finishing from the boys from Spain they would of took all 3 pts here, but again somehow Boca Juniors managed to keep them out and earned themselves a consecutive clean sheet and take a vital point back to Argentina.

Man Utd brushed aside the disappointment of last weeks defeat and goals from Van Nistlerooy and Ronaldo helped them to their first win of the Season as they beat Barcelona 2-0 at Old Trafford and move up to 6th place.

Juventus and Liverpool are yet to play and more details of this match will follow as soon as we receive them.

As the SFTLA Premiership is now in full swing, we will continue to update you with all the news as and when it happens and remember once all the matches have been played each week, why not head on over to our in depth Match Report Section to see full reports of each game played here in the SFTLA Premiership Online experience.

We still have many places to be filled in Division 1, so if you reside in the UK own a PS2 Console and have the ability to play Online why not head on over to our Forum and get signed up for this exciting Online experience.

Crespo out - only 18 travel

Visit Chelsea mini siteHernan Crespo is out of the final Group game against Besiktas leaving Chelsea with just two recognised strikers in the squad. Crespo’s injury is a calf strain, but he is hopeful of being fit for Saturday and the Premiership game against Bolton.

Marco Ambrosio rejoins and Neil Sullivan stays at home. Still absent are Emmanuel Petit (knee), Juan Sebastian Veron (back) and Eidur Gudjohnsen (ankle).

The squad is: Cudicini, Ambrosio, Melchiot, Johnson, Gallas, Terry, Desailly, Bridge, Babayaro, Lampard, Gronkjaer, Makelele, Geremi, Duff, Cole, Mutu, Hasselbaink and Stanic.

That’s 18 players which is a starting line-up and bench with nothing to spare.

Leeds 1 v 1 Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteOur excellent winning streak has ended with a draw, a scrappy Damien Duff finish earning a point after Jermaine Pennant’s strike against the run of play.

With Arsenal only drawing at Leicester we stay top but although Leeds had to defend at times desperately, it was not a great vintage Chelsea performance.

The struggling home side’s goal came against the run of play from an uncharacteristic error by Claude Makelele. Leeds 4-5-1 formation gave them the extra man in the midfield. In the 18th minute Makelele’s hesitant pass deep in his own half was pounced on by Pennant, who raced past John Terry’s sprawling challenge, cut inside William Gallas into the box and drove past Carlo Cudicini.

It is the first goal we have conceded in just under 11 hours of football.

From then on it was all Chelsea, other than speculative shots from Mc Phail and late substitute Johnson.

Then with just over 20 minutes remaining, and Leeds bringing on more defensive midfielders, a perceptive William Gallas ball found Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the area. Hasselbaink took on the defence and crossed hard. Once again Leeds half-cleared, but this time Damien Duff delighted in hammering home with his left foot.

Big Roster Update 2.00

Buy FIFA Football 2004After the overwhelming success of version 1 of this FIFA 2004 roster update, FIFACZ.COM have released a new version with lots of improvements. Jomi created this Roster Update Patch for FIFA 2004 with just the help of the Ingame Team Management.

It updates the following leagues:

  • Germany, France 1 + 2, Italy, England, Spain, Holland, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland, Austria, Belgium, Norway and Rest of the World

Newly updated in version 2.00:

  • 3 new leagues : the MLS, the Brazilian league, the English 1st division
  • All the teams in the international section have been updated according to the latest results (Euro, Gold Cup,...)
  • The 7 big leagues of the games (ENG; ITA; FRA; GER; SPA; POR; HOL) have been completely re-worked according to November real life matches as well as some big clubs (Celtic, Rangers, Anderlecht, Sparta Praha, Galatasaray,...) That's why you won't find stars players as Desailly or Scholes in the starting 11 of their clubs.

Because they are just working with the Ingame Team Management, it is impossible to create players, modify their standard positions, the jersey numbers or choose the captain. We have to wait until the Creation Center is out or some other editor which could read the DBI files.

The patch is available direct from our Patches Database.

Premiership Preview - Leeds v Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteIs this the Barclaycard Premiership's biggest mismatch ever? Certainly in financial terms, Leeds vs Chelsea could be considered a real David vs Goliath match, albeit one where David used to be at least the same size as his giant opponent. The contrasting fortunes of these two sides were summed up by the events of the summer.

Chelsea were on the verge of being in the same financial mess as Leeds, only to be saved by a Russian billionaire and transformed into the biggest, richest bully in the school playground. Meanwhile, Leeds have just kept on sliding down the spiral towards extinction, and their only hope of salvation seems to be trying to attract an Abramovich of their own. So far, their search has been fruitless despite the stories about a rich Sheikh.

The changes in the two squads has been equally contrasting, as Chelsea have signed most of the best players in Europe in the last few months while Leeds continue to let their more talented players escape to pastures new in a vain attempt to stave off The End. How much their fans must wish that their nutty Professor could invent a time machine and use it to go back to the summer and divert a certain Russian's plane away from Heathrow and towards Leeds-Bradford airport.

There are no worries for Chelsea, especially after their 1-0 win over Manchester United last Sunday, but Claudio Ranieri will have been drumming into his players all week that they cannot let that euphoria distract them from the task at hand. Leeds may be bottom of the league, but still have enough quality to cause an upset on their day, and it would be infuriating for the all-stars to lose top spot so soon after claiming it.

Ranieri found that out last December when he tinkered with his team a little too much and Chelsea ended up losing 2-0. Jonathan Woodgate scored the first that day, with Milner adding another just before half-time. It was just a few days after his first goal for the club and the last one until his strike at Charlton, so Leeds will pray that history can repeat itself.

SFTLA PS2 Premiership Week 1 Overview

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PS2 LeagueThe first weeks games have been completed and what a week it was , amazingly only two home wins were achieved but we had an untold amount of goals which just goes to show that weak defences in this game will be Punished.

Sitting pretty at the top of the League at the moment is Juventus and manager Ooter who had a very convincing 0-3 Away Victory against rivals Inter, hot on their heels are the boys from Argentina Boca Juniors who themselves kept a clean sheet in beating Man Utd and Manager Abramovich 2-0 although the score here doesnt quite reflect the true nature of the game. The game of the week had to be AC Milan v Valencia , Five goals scored in this match with AC Milan snatching victory through a penalty in injury time that must of sent the Valencia Manager Carrmylord home with the right ump.

I think you would all agree that it has been a great first week here in the SFTLA Premiership and pretty soon we will start to see the League Table take a familiar look. Stay tuned for the in depth Match Reports from every game that will be posted tomorrow.

Carling League Cup - Reading 0 v 1 Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteJimmy Floyd Hasselbaink pounced in the second half to steer Chelsea into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win, but Claudio Ranieri's star-studded side made hard work of First Division Reading.

Hasselbaink capitalised on some excellent work from Frank Lampard and Hernan Crespo to claim his ninth goal of the season but Chelsea were guilty of missing a hatful of chances.

Argentina striker Crespo was the main culprit and, although he dazzled on occasions with his devilish footwork and mazy runs into the box, he should have finished the match with at least one goal under his belt.

Lampard, Joe Cole and Marcel Desailly also went close, with the Blues skipper completing a full 90 minutes after spending more than two months on the sidelines with a hip injury.

Ranieri fielded five of the side which defeated Manchester United on Sunday - Lampard, Joe Cole, Geremi, Crespo and John Terry started - but it was not all one-way traffic.

In the next round we have been drawn away at Aston Villa (could have been worse).

EURO 2004 Groups Drawn

EURO 2004The end of the UEFA EURO 2004™ draw ceremony at Lisbon's Pavilhão Atlântico was signalled by a spectacular drum show from traditional group Tocá Rufar but as the sounds from the official draw ceremony faded out, they were replaced by the equally cacophonous sounds of reaction to the draw itself and fevered speculation about the tournament which is now less than 200 days away.

Group A

  • Portugal
  • Greece
  • Spain
  • Russia

Group B

  • France
  • England
  • Switzerland
  • Croatia

Group C

  • Sweden
  • Bulgaria
  • Denmark
  • Italy

Group D

  • Czech Republic
  • Latvia
  • Germany
  • Netherlands

Group A pitted hosts Portugal with their Iberian rivals Spain; holders France begin their defence in Group B against England; Scandinavian neighbours Denmark and Sweden were paired together with Italy in Group C; while newcomers Latvia found themselves in the group most deserving of the traditional 'Group of Death' appellation: up against the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands.

EURO 2004

Portugal will kick off the tournament on 12th June at the Dragão stadium against Greece and we will provide special coverage of the build up and the tournemant for you here.

Sweetpatch's Sunday Barclaycard Premiership Round-Up

Sweetpatch's Soccer SnippetsA first-half penalty from Frank Lampard gave big-spending Chelsea a 1-0 win over champions Manchester United and took them to the top of the Premiership table.

Lampard fired home on the half-hour to give Claudio Ranieri's side the points after United skipper Roy Keane had upended Joe Cole in the box. It gave Chelsea a deserved victory for a strong performance that rendered the visitors toothless until the last 20 minutes.

Lampard fired just wide before the break and Tim Howard in the United goal made some fine saves. And although Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo both went close in the dying minutes Chelsea held on for the win.

Chelsea are a point clear of Arsenal, who somehow failed to beat Fulham at Highbury earlier in the afternoon.

Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar combined with some wasteful finishing from the Gunners saw the London derby end goalless. It was backs-to-the-wall stuff for Chris Coleman's team as Arsenal created chance after chance in a bid to hang on to top spot.

Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires and skipper Dennis Bergkamp all had good chances to score but were either off target or denied by van der Sar.

The Gunners remain unbeaten in 14 league games this season, but will wonder how they failed to convert their massive superiority into goals and all three points.

Liverpool roared back from a goal down to beat Birmingham 3-1 at Anfield.

The Reds were behind on 33 minutes while Mikael Forssell netted after well-worked free-kick. But within two minutes Steven Gerrard levelled from the spot after Matthew Upson fouled youngster Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Gerard Houllier's side went ahead on 69 minutes when Harry Kewell, who nodded home the winner against Steaua Bucharest in midweek, repeated the dose by meeting John Arne Riise's cross with a spectacular header. Emile Heskey wrapped things up 12 minutes from time with another superb goal, hooking a shot acrobatically into the Birmingham net.

Manchester City's miserable run continues after a disappointing 1-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough.

More than 46,000 turned out hoping Kevin Keegan's Blues could quickly erase the painful memory of that shock UEFA Cup exit at the hands of Polish side Groclin. But Sun Jihai's own goal from a Gaizka Mendieta cross after 32 minutes left them licking their wounds once again.

City did have a string of chances to get back on terms, but wasted them with Robbie Fowler and Paulo Wanchope the biggest culprits.

Chelsea 1 v 0 Manchester United

Visit Chelsea mini siteIt was tight, it was tense, it was not the prettiest. But a penalty bashed with so much force by Frank Lampard it was if he wanted the whole Premiership to hear it smack the back of the net was enough for victory. We have passed a big, big test.

Manchester United love nothing better than to slap down pretenders to their crown at this stage of the season, sending them away to rethink their ambitions. Instead all the thinking is being done by those who thought we would not hit the ground running this season. We enter December at the top of the Premiership table.

It is fast becoming apparent that this Chelsea team’s success is built on a rock solid defence. Man United today pushed it as hard, both in the opening minutes and especially in the closing stages, but Wayne Bridge, William Gallas, John Terry and Mario Melchiot, who retained his place, were all pillars. Claude Makelele in front of them was verging on omnipresent in Chelsea’s half of the pitch.

Claudio Ranieri sprung a surprise before the game began, omitting Damien Duff for Geremi who lined up alongside Makelele in the centre of the park. Joe Cole and Frank Lampard were to provide the width left and right.

The visitors, with both van Nistelrooy and Forlan in attack started strongly, the first of those two turning Gallas to set-up the second whose stab at goal was touched round by Cudicini. There then followed a couple of edgy mix-ups centred first round Cudicini and then Terry but after that, all settled into the form that was to take the team to its sixth consecutive clean sheet.

Chelsea began to retaliate. Mutu blasted well over from an angle after a mistake by Silvestre had presented him the ball and then Lampard half-hit a shot wide. A low ball by Gary Neville was turned just over the Chelsea bar by Giggs who claimed a touch off John Terry. The next penalty area action decided the game.

Twenty-seven minutes had passed when Lampard sought out Crespo who collected and played a ball into the area for Cole. When Roy Keane’s challenge came in it’s true Cole didn’t have the ball under the tightest control. But since when has that permitted the up-ending of an opponent!

It was a clear penalty, followed by the predictable complaints and histrionics which were continued on by keeper Howard almost until the moment the spot-kick was struck. Frank Lampard, who has become penalty taker almost by default, could not have taken it any better, slamming it low into the Shed End net.

Before the penalty there had been a positional switch, Geremi going out to the right and Lampard moving to his more natural central slot from which he was becoming ever more influential. Just before the break a well hit cross shot evaded the far post by centimetres.

Check out the full second half story by clicking here.

At the end the Chelsea players, though clearly happy, celebrated in an understated manner. Though this was that big, big test passed, they know there is an even bigger job yet to be completed.

But today wasn’t the performance of pretenders – it was one of a mature, confident and complete team.
