  • Richard Dunne's late own goal gifted 10-man West Bromwich Albion a 1-1 draw and a point as Manchester City's poor home form continued.
  • Joseph-Desire Job seized upon a rare Barclays Premiership start as Middlesbrough maintained their push towards a Champions League place with a 2-0 victory over Norwich.
  • Birmingham City piled more pressure on struggling Fulham as they cruised to a fourth straight win at Craven Cottage 2-3.

English Premier League: Portsmouth 0 Chelsea 2

English Premier League: Portsmouth 0 Chelsea 2Arjen Robben’s seventh goal of the season 12 minutes from time gave Chelsea one of the hardest fought for wins so far this season. Joe Cole’s last minute drive made it a convincing victory.

An uneven and slippery pitch, an exuberant and driven home crowd and team who with a 4-4-1-1 formation attacked Chelsea at every opportunity, and a changed Chelsea starting eleven which struggled for fluidity all led to a big first-half battle.

With 12 minutes remaining, Gudjohnsen couldn't find a way through, Lampard took the ball and squared it to Robben on the right whose shot deflected off Taylor and beat Hislop at his far post. Portsmouth defenders lay motionless, disbelieving. Robben charged the length of the pitch to Chelsea fans and got booked for taking off his shirt in celebration.

In stoppage time, Gudjohnsen was twisting and turning looking for a shot, couldn't find it and touched the ball to the arriving Cole who drove a 20 yard left footer into the bottom corner for his third of the season.

What a good win! And when the whistle went seconds later the team all celebrated together, not in a show of ‘grouping’ but in sheer joy.

Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the Boxing Day matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below:

  • Southampton's three-man attack came up short in a 0-0 draw against Charlton Athletic as another home match slipped by without a victory to boost Saints' hopes of climbing out of the drop zone.
  • Damien Duff maintained Chelsea's advantage at the top of the Barclays Premiership with the only goal against Aston Villa.
  • Linvoy Primus provided the only goal blow as Portsmouth condemned Crystal Palace to a 1-0 Boxing Day defeat at Selhurst Park as Pompey celebrated the appointment of Velimir Zajec as full-time boss.
  • Champions Arsenal kept the pressure on Barclays Premiership leaders Chelsea with a comfortable 2-0 win over Fulham.
  • Tottenham Hotspur's revival under Martin Jol continued as they chalked up a fifth straight win 0-2 in the Barclays Premiership after struggling Norwich City failed to convert their chances at Carrow Road.
  • Old stagers Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes combined to keep Manchester United's Barclays Premiership title push on track with the goals that defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Old Trafford.
  • Marcus Bent's second half-header ensured Everton defeated Manchester City 2-1 and overtook their entire points total for last season.
  • Graeme Souness found scant relief from his current difficulties despite the familiar surroundings at Ewood Park as Newcastle United left Blackburn Rovers grateful for having avoided defeat drawing 2-2.
  • Clinton Morrison and Emile Heskey were again both on target as Steve Bruce's Birmingham side comfortably disposed of Middlesbrough 2-0 to register their third successive Barclays Premiership win.
  • Steven Gerrard enjoyed the luxury of putting his feet up early after inspiring Liverpool's 0-5 romp over 10-man West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Aston Villa 0

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Aston Villa 0Chelsea have won on Boxing Day for the first time in five seasons thanks to another goal from in-form Damien Duff, his eighth of the season.

The winger found the net expertly just before the half-hour mark in the first period, the game’s only goal coming during Chelsea’s best spell. But on a day when The Blues’ defence did not look as rock solid as in so many games this season, the lack of a second goal made for some tense moments as the afternoon drew on.

When Damien Duff found the net it was his sixth opening goal in ten games. Makelele did what he does best, picking up possession and setting his team-mates on their way. Lampard played the ball on to Robben who carried then played it out wide to the right.

Duff collected and swerved inside before shooting beyond Sorensen and inside the near-post when the far-post area looked the more likely option. It was clever finish.

Always the superior side however, this will go down as one of Chelsea’s hard-earned rather than flamboyant victories this season.

On a day in the calendar where it has so often gone wrong in the past (this was only the fourth Boxing Day win in 16 years), Mourinho’s men can celebrate this win knowing they will begin 2005 on top of the Premiership table.

Brazilian becomes first FIFA Interactive World Champion

Brazilian becomes first FIFA Interactive World ChampionRio's Thiago Carrico de Azevedo more than lived up to his country's footballing heritage by becoming the first champion of the FIFA Interactive World Cup after a gruelling day of competition.

The world's top eight players waged war for the prestigious title, but Thiago never lost his cool as he steered his France team through the competition playing EA Sports’ FIFA 2005 on Xbox. He outsmarted close friend and online “game-mate” Matija Biljeskovic 2-1 in a cliffhanger of a final. His victory at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich, which was streamed across the world live over the internet on FIFA.com, drew wild applause from both players and spectators packed around the gaming pod.

First Round
But it didn’t all go Thiago's way in the first round when the eight players were split into two groups and played one game against each in their group. He opened up with a 2-1 victory over Australian Shane Magee, but then South African Shimane Morekure, the youngest competitor and winner of the first regional event in Johannesburg, beat Thiago’s France 3-2. The Brazilian student then drew against London winner Paul Gordon in his next game, giving him four points and the runners-up place in his group behind Shimane, who notched up the highest score of all finalists with nine points.

Semi Finals
Well aware that the global winner will stand alongside the world's best footballers at the FIFA World Player of the Year Gala and be recognised as the world's best football gamer, Thiago shifted up a gear in the semi-final, where he faced professional gamer Yoon Seo Park from Korea Republic. The match was worthy of a last four battle – the fleet-footed Thierry Henry did the damage proud with a hat-trick that sealed a 3-2 victory over the hot favourite from Asia.

The second semi-final was marked by even more prolific goalscoring. Matija Biljeskovic's AC Milan strikers Crespo and Shevchenko gave him a 6-3 victory after extra over time over Shimane's Manchester United and a coveted place in the final.

The Final
Both sides started cautiously and much of the play was centred around midfield, but a header by Henry put Thiago ahead in the 37th minute. The second half again saw defences dominant before Trezeguet got on the end of a cross to made it 2-0 in the 85th minute. In the final minutes of the match, American Matija gained some consolation thanks to Shevchenko's goal, but it was too little too late.

The Winner
Thiago was overjoyed to win the competition which was watched by FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi. The champion from Rio de Janeiro enthused. “I'm so happy. I used to play as Brazil, but Thierry Henry is very good so I switched to France. And the combination of Henry and Trezequet was just wicked.”

The Croatian-born Matija, who now lives in the United States, was gracious in defeat. “It was a very defensive game, almost like a stalemate in chess. There weren't that many chances, but whoever took their chance won – and he did that better than I. Second place is great. It's a dream come true that I can go to the World Player of the Year Gala - I can't wait to shake Shevchenko's hand. He's the best in the world.”

Shimane secured third place while Yoon had to settle for fourth.

FIFA General Secretary Linsi summed up the competition: “You guys did a great job, congratulations. This is the birth of something that one day will be really big. I think you’ve all contributed to the future, so well done!

You can start practicing now for the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2005 and look out for details of qualification tournaments and registration information coming here soon.

Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below:

  • Sol Campbell's first Premiership goal in 16 months steered Arsenal past a rather uncomfortable Portsmouth challenge 0-1 and back into second place in the Barclays Premiership.
  • Liverpool kept their dreams of a top four finish alive with a convincing 3-1 victory over an increasingly ragged Newcastle United.
  • With guest of honour Eric Cantona watching from the stands, Manchester United turned on the style against Crystal Palace winning 5-2 to maintain their pursuit of Barclays Premiership leaders Chelsea.
  • Blackburn Rovers' difficulties in front of goal continued as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by high-flying Everton.
  • Joey Barton re-discovered his goal touch and Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
  • Frank Lampard scored his 50th Premiership goal as Chelsea cruised to a 4-0 victory against struggling Norwich City to go six points clear at the top of the Barclays Premiership.
  • Aston Villa proved you don't always get what you deserve at Christmas as Middlesbrough kept themselves in the Champions League hunt 3-0 at the Riverside.
  • Jermain Defoe proved to be Tottenham Hotspur's Christmas cracker at White Hart Lane as his first Premiership hat-trick gave Spurs their fourth consecutive Barclays Premiership victory 5-1 v Southampton.
  • Birmingham City claimed a second derby scalp on the back of their victory at Aston Villa as West Bromwich Albion were seen off 4-0 at St Andrews.

English Premier League: Chelsea 4 Norwich 0

English Premier League: Chelsea 4 Norwich 0Following our dream Champions League draw this week v Barcelona, the Blues go marching on. Chelsea wished our fans Merry Christmas with yet another four goal display and a result that extends the lead at the top of the table to six points.

Against a Norwich performance that at times bordered on generous, this was not a first class performance by José Mourinho’s men, not compared with some of the heights that have been hit this season, but what there was in abundance was first class finishing.

Chelsea were three up with the contest over before half-time. Damien, Duff (who else?) with an early opener followed up by a Lampard rocket and another special Robben goal.

It took until the final ten minutes of the game for substitute Didier Drogba to add the icing to the Christmas cake but with Norwich’s ambition by then limited to say the least, it had always felt a question of when rather than if.

Chelsea had scored four for the sixth time in nine Premiership games. We had won the game before Christmas for the ninth time in ten seasons. Top of the League and having a laugh!

On the 3rd day of Christmas..

Rangers celebrate their cup winning goal in typical Scottish styleWe bring you part 2 of Stato Stan's excellent SFTLA Division 3 Review from the recently completed SFTLA season.

Continuing from the previous episode, Stan has just flown from Porto to Glasgow to meet Tyler, the manager of Rangers.

Next morning after 8 pints of heavy and a new curry for me (Haggis Madras with Pilou Heather), I arrived at the Rangers training ground and met up with Tyler.

Winning the cup of course had been the pinnacle of events for the Blues along with gaining promotion. The road to cup victory had been hard fought with Tyler's low point being reached in the first round with his team losing in the first leg two nil to Portsmouth – however as we know the blues turned it around and marched onto victory.

As with the other promoted managers, Tyler’s ambitions for next season are based on survival and the team holding their newfound status. Lastly we discussed his player of the season – Tyler’s praise was centred around the stoppers of the team – firstly the reserve keeper for staying in the reserves and then to Klos, the giant keeper at Rangers who had quite literally “saved” the team on numerous occasions.

So after a couple of verses of Scotland the Brave, healthy lunch and a glass or 8 of good malt, off I ran with my face painted blue and white to catch the shuttle train across to the East coast capital of Edinburgh and the smart tartan wallpapered offices of Single Jack at Hearts.

Follow Stato Stan's next episode coming soon to a website near you.

On the 2nd day of Christmas..

Porto’s Player of the Season celebrates another super goal!We bring you Stato Stan's SFTLA Division 3 Review from the recently completed SFTLA season.

Stato Stan here, giving some feedback on how Division 3 panned out during the season – unfortunately the only gold nuggets found in the division were on the pitch and in the dugout and not in the stream that crosses the ginnel at the back of my allotment – otherwise, it would have been goodbye the Huddersfield Herald and instead “Why Hellllllo” to the Costa Brava Bugle for good ex pats on the Spanish Retirement Development south of Benidorm.

Anyway, I must stop meandering like the young Man Utd Portuguese winger on a cold blustery Champions league evening in Salford (Ed - stop it!)

Where better to start than with the League Champions so off onto a nice warm, well hostessed BA flight down to Portugal to meet Alex and his Porto team.

I found Alex relaxing on a sun lounger by his villa pool (great job this reporting lark) – I noticed a packed suitcase next to him – more of that in a moment.

I asked Alex for his highlights of the season (as he’s a Spurs supporter I had to first explain what a highlight was!)

Alex explained that the close and friendly rivalry between Porto and Rangers had been fun with Porto taking the title but Rangers gaining revenge in the league cup final. Losing this had been hard as Alex had had a few battle getting there including a hard fought draw in their first round 1st leg verses Huddersfield (Ed – no bias there Stan?) No

I asked Alex about disappointments (apart from Spurs start to the season) and he said it was shame a number of lads dropped out and a number of matches were not played – a common feeling among the regulars in the league.

When asked re his best player this season, Alex heaped praise on Benny McCarthy as his top scorer but his award would have to go to Derles whose goals came at critical times.

Asked about his hopes for next season – fairly straightforward here – avoid relegation – (a common one this I bet!)

Lastly I couldn't resist asking re the suitcase - Alex explained that the time had come to return home and take charge of Spurs – he felt the situation was like the Sound of Music - North London is Alive with the Sound of booing and it was time Alex took charge – we look forward to see what order Alex can bring to the situation.

Of course as Alex said, Tyler and his boys in Blue from Ibrox had pushed Porto all season so back onto the plane I jumped and headed to the fair city of Glasgow, looking forward the hospitality of the fair city by the River Clyde.

We have Stato Stan's next episode coming very soon.

English Premier League: Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2

English Premier League: Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2John Terry and Eidur Gudjohnsen kept Chelsea five points ahead of Arsenal and four above Everton at the top of the table with equalising goals at Highbury on Sunday afternoon.

Explain a start like this! Arsenal’s first attack, high ball into the area, Henry beat Carvalho to head it back but Carvalho got sucked out in the action, Reyes headed it back into the hole he’d left and Henry in space turned and launched an excellent left-footed shot into the far top corner. One minute 15 seconds had gone and Chelsea were behind. Cech was furious with his defence.

Fifteen minutes followed of flurry and scurry but there was no space for anyone, no time on the ball. This was more what we had expected.

That all changed in the 17th minute when Arsenal cleared a Chelsea attack, Terry controlled the ball cleverly and moved forward past Pires to pull the home team out of shape, fed Duff on the left and his early ball into Gudjohnsen was superbly laid off to Lampard who walloped it from 22 yards. Unbelievably, Almunia tipped it over the bar with athletic aplomb.

But the goalkeeper was nowhere from Robben’s subsequent corner on the right when Terry rose above Campbell and everyone to head his sixth goal of the season. Game on!

The game was on an edge. Two minutes before the half hour Pires burst through the middle into a clutch of defenders and won a free-kick for Makelele’s nudge. As the wall lined up after complaints to referee Graham Poll, Henry took the kick quickly, no-one was prepared, it deflected off Tiago and Cech scrambled across his goal but the ball plopped in the bottom corner of the net. Explain conceding a goal like that!

José Mourinho made a double substitution. Carvalho had been struggling for fitness and Bridge replaced him, going to left-back with Gallas resuming in central defence. Drogba went on for Tiago who had not been at his best.

With Duff on the right, Robben on the left and just Makelele and Lampard in midfield, this was the shape of team which destroyed Newcastle a week earlier. In just 34 seconds Chelsea was level again.

Robben won a free-kick on the left touchline, Lampard launched it in, Gallas headed back from space beyond the far post and Gudjohnsen screwed a header which lobbed into the goal from eight yards, his ninth of the season.

The final whistle brought peace and cuddles from both sides. For Chelsea it may have been a draw, but it felt like a victory.

UEFA Champions League: Porto 2 Chelsea 1

UEFA Champions League: Porto 2 Chelsea 1A good crowd reception for José Mourinho and a Damien Duff goal opening proceedings for the fourth time in six games wasn't enough as Porto came back to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Chelsea suffered a second defeat of the season and a first one in European competition. It is the first defeat Mourinho has suffered in Europe since Matchday 2 last year.

  • 0 - 1 Duff scored 12 minutes before half-time when, once again from the right, he took Lampard’s wonderful cross-ball, ran inside Areias and shot left-footed before Pedro Emanuel could close him down. The ball sailed past Nuno E Santo’s pathetic attempt to palm it away with a stretched right arm.
  • 1 - 1 Seitaridis drove forward and hit a good shot which Terry headed away but Diego crashed back unstoppably from 20 yards beyond Cech.
  • 2 - 1 Then, with five minutes left, the stadium exploded when Quaresma got behind Ferreira and crossed, and McCarthy rose above Gallas and headed in. It was a brilliant finish and he milked the home crowd who went ballistic.

When the final whistle went all was love and kisses from both sides. But for 90 minutes it had been anything but that.

TCM 2005 Console Review at Eurogamer

TCM 2005 Console Review at EurogamerEurogamer.net have reviewed Total Club Manager 2005 for the Playstation 2.

"Still, despite a few misgivings, Total Club Manager 2005 is clearly a work of some effort by EA. It may not hold a scarf to the likes of Football Manager on the PC, but it can certainly play ball with CM3 on the Xbox, considering that game's poor optimisation and now-outdated stats. Especially patient fans of the FIFA engine will get more from it than other gamers, but even without the real-time matches this is a title that football fans will get plenty of fun from. In a niche genre, it's certainly a stylish outfit."

Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below:

  • Substitute Dennis Rommedahl scored a fine winner with seconds remaining to seal Charlton Athletic's 0-1 victory and only their second away win in the Barclays Premiership this season and leave Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson distraught after his earlier penalty miss.
  • Robbie Keane continued Tottenham Hotspur's recovery with a crucial strike as Spurs shaded a close contest with Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at Ewood Park.
  • Nolberto Solano struck for the fourth successive home game to rescue Aston Villa's unbeaten home record in a 1-1 draw after they had been outclassed for long periods by Liverpool.
  • Thierry Henry answered his critics in style as he combined with Robert Pires to haul Arsenal out of their recent slump with a 3-0 home win over Birmingham City.
  • David Moyes' Everton kept their grip on third place in the Barclays Premiership with an amazing comeback in a five-goal Goodison Park thriller with a 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers.
  • Ryan Giggs starred as Manchester United maintained their impressive Barclays Premiership form with a 3-0 defeat of Southampton.
  • Andy Cole spared Chris Coleman the ignominy of suffering four consecutive Barclays Premiership defeats for the first time in his tenure as manager of Fulham as they beat Norwich 0-1.
  • Lomana LuaLua fired home an 89th-minute winner as Portsmouth completed a stunning late comeback to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at Fratton Park.
  • Chelsea moved eight points clear temporarily at the top of the Barclays Premiership as second-half goals from Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben and Mateja Kezman secured a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Chelsea 4 Newcastle United 0

Chelsea 4 Newcastle United 0Soon there will be suggestions the club name is changed to Chelsea Four! José Mourinho's men have racked up their favourite goal total once again with four Chelsea goals for the fifth time in seven League outings.

This time they all came in the final half-hour after what, if truth be told, was an edgy and keenly fought contest up until then. Newcastle had come fired up and for spells left Chelsea second best. But one Mourinho shuffle of his pack later and Chelsea were ahead through Frank Lampard. Then the fun began.

Half-time substitute Didier Drogba capped a powerful display with his first goal since his return, Arjen Robben scored the sort of magical solo piece only he can conjure up and the good times were capped off by Mateja Kezman’s first in the Premiership, from the penalty spot.

  • 1 - 0 Makelele was the initiator with a ball up to Drogba; he headed back towards the penalty spot where Lampard controlled with one touch and smacked the ball in. What a roar! What relief!
  • 2 - 0 On 68 minutes a pass from the excellent Lampard right into the danger area was picked up by the big striker. A twist inside left Bramble for dead, a low curling finish had Given grasping at air. 2-0.
  • 3 - 0 Duff on the break picked out Robben who set off at what remained of Newcastle’s defence. Leaving Bowyer in his wake, he turned inside Hughes and there was simply no question that November’s Player of the Month would find the net for another stunner. It was his fifth of the season. As at St James’ Park he had proved unstoppable.
  • 4 - 0 There were only two minutes remaining but that was still time enough for Drogba to send Duff away, only for Given to haul him down. If Kezman felt big pressure in taking the penalty it didn't show. The epitome of cool, he chipped it into the net for his first Premiership goal with the keeper sprawling and was soon jumped upon by every one of his team-mates.

Chelsea are now walking with a top of the table swagger.

Carling League Cup: Fulham 1 Chelsea 2

Carling League Cup: Fulham 1 Chelsea 2 Lucky goals by Damien Duff and Frank Lampard earned Chelsea a win that had to be fought for against a resurgent Fulham side who caused their flying neighbours several problems.

Nine minutes into the second-half Duff scored. He won a midfield loose ball, Robben took it on past a couple of challenges, fed it square to Duff and his 20 yard drive ricocheted off the knee of old boy Pearce, in for suspended Knight, and bounced past diving van der Sar in the centre of the goal.

McBride responded before Carvalho and he had the simplest of tasks to turn the ball into the net to make it 1-1. It was a real shock. Chelsea don’t do dropping leads. Lampard replaced Duff and Cole moved forward. Fulham found a spring in their step again.

Then with three minutes left on the clock, Lampard took over Parker’s good forage forward, turned Pembridge and shot from 20 yards. The ball swerved and van der Sar clutched air. It bounced into the net as apologetically as Chelsea’s first, but the effect was just as emphatic. It was also final.

Chelsea are in our 11th semi-final in 12 years.
