UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PS2 Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PS2 Review IGN have reviewed the PS2/PSP versions of the game and quote:

"UEFA is an interesting and worthwhile addition to EA's growing library of soccer titles, thanks to its interesting mix of unique modes, its quick-moving, fast-paced game, and its fun feel and solid controls. The PSP connectivity adds another layer of depth, as you can port your season back and forth between systems. You might find better FIFA games on the market, but for a last-gen effort UEFA retains that feeling of fun and playability that is actually a little better than its Xbox 360 brethren."

Rating (out of 10) Description
8.5
Presentation
Not as stunning as its 360 brethren, but still good solid EA presentation, with quick menus, great video and good load times.
7.5
Graphics
One can ignore the blocky players and low-res textures because the animation is good and the motion capture is excellent.
7.5
Sound
Great announcing, decent crowds, and some enjoyable music for a change.
8.0
Gameplay
Fast-paced, enjoyable and right to the point. Some good modes in there, and, of course, everything is officially licensed.
7.5
Lasting Appeal
The Treble is a solid addition and so is ultimate Challenge, plus, the PSP connectivity means it all good for the road.
7.9
Good

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Card Trading Issue Explained

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Card Trading Issue ExplainedEA have released their latest position with some problems regarding online card trading at the moment and they have followed this up with the studio.

The issue comes from the test data (which was used before the game being released) having been deleted and the sysem which tracks trades being reset later than originally intended - after the game launched.

The upshot of this is that trading is incorrectly tracking initially for some users. And while this is frustrating will only be an issue for this first week, after which the trades which did not work correctly will have timed out in the system, restoring any cards which may have gone missing and restoring trade slots you may have lot in the meantime.

They apologise for the delays to those suffering this problem, but their current understanding is that by the end of the week this will no longer be a problem.

News on CEP project

CEP Career Expansion PatchNo, the project is not dead or discontinued don't worry :) I just had personally more things to do during this month related to my real work so I did not have the time to dedicate myself to update the website on the progress of the work and I've almosted abandoned the forums; anyway I'm checking everyday the mail fifaock@yahoo.it where you can find suggestions, bugs fixing etc. and I'm gathering all your segnalations. During this period, if I did not have the possibility to work a lot on the CEP, the co-authors of this project, all the ones who dedicate their passion to this patch worked a lot, especially Esterry and brfifa07 produced really TONS of materials and we are now in the phase of gathering all the efforts produced to pack them in the 4.0 version, that will be the final version for Fifa 2007.

As happened for past year edition, anyway, this version is mainly the base for the first version of CEP for Fifa 2008 and this is why I decided to do not hurry the time of release, concentrating on adding new stuff and surprises since the next version. Very soon you will receive a detailed report of what is going on in the "CEP lab" with many incoming news that are coming to improve the offer we make to the thousands of CEP users. In the last days the CEP version 3.0 is not more available for some parts of it due to some problems with Filefront servers, as we are going to a release a brand new 4.0 I did not dedicated my self to fix this problem. About a release date for CEP 4.0 I think that a good possibility is the half of April, but you will receive before some more detailed news on this page about the many parts of the CEP project. See ya all ;)

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Another Xbox 360 Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Another Xbox 360 ReviewTeam Xbox have reviewed the 360 version of the game and quote:

"The refinements made in the EA Sports soccer engine (this independent player/ball physics engine is the wave of the future weather you like it or not) allow UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 to play like FIFA 07 should have for the Xbox 360, and it’s good to know that EA cares about such things. They could have merely slapped UEFA licensing on the same exact engine and many gamers would have been none the wiser. Add the gameplay tweaks to a new mode that makes a strong case for the combination of card and sports games, and the result is a surprising effort from EA’s Canadian development house.

There are still some improvements to be made (the graphics and audio could be better, and the A.I. is still frustrating), and we still want those online leagues like FIFA 07 for the Xbox, but it’s hard to complain about having a strong soccer offering like UEFA Champions League 2006-2007. A soccer effort that just may give us all a glimpse of just how good FIFA 08 could be. "

Rating (out of 10) Description
8.5
Gameplay
A lovely game engine featuring independent player and ball physics. Card game campaign mode jazzes up offline play.
8.0
Graphics
The player models are still a bit synthetic, but the overall look of the game in motion is more refined than EA’s 2006 offerings.
7.5
Audio
The soundtrack isn’t quite as good as FIFA 07, and the commentator call doesn’t sync as well with the on-pitch action.
8.5
Longevity
Eight player online action – oh yeah! One could get lost in the Ultimate Team mode.
9.0
Innovation
Soccer gaming seems to be EA’s main refuge for innovation these days.
8.3

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PC Review

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - PC Review23rd of March is the official release date of EA's newest soccer game, UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 and today we provide you with an independent review of the PC version of the game.

Feeling
The game isn't really different in this area as many might have guessed. EA are sticking to the new FIFA 07 engine and that's it. There are some new animations for the players, such as new header animations and keeper reactions. The game itself is pretty much the same as FIFA 07 but flows a little better with passes and movements.

AI
The AI has in our opinion been improved and holds a little better standard than in FIFA 07. The opponents try harder to get the ball, they don't panic as fast as they get the ball near their own goal as they do in FIFA 07. Their accuracy has been improved so the old days when the AI would shoot the ball over the lines are (almost) over. The keeper has also been improved to act more rationally in certain situations, example: you are approaching the keeper for a 1 on 1. In FIFA 07 the keeper would wait for you to come very close and then start to come out of the goal, but in this game he'll already be waiting for you far out of the goal.

Player Likeness
There's not much to say here, the faces of the players are unfortunately exactly the same as in FIFA 07.

Features

  • The Treble: As manager of your club you have just one season to complete the ultimate football accomplishment - the treble! With every mission comes a new challenge as you play through a season filled with league matches, cup ties and much more!
  • Ultimate Challenge: A series of challenges that recreate the many memorable moments in CL history. Your mission is to play them out as they did in real life, and the points you get can be spent in the Store.
  • UEFA Champions League Tournament: Play this years official CL tournament with the best teams from the best leagues, or your imagination and mix up the groups as you want.
  • UEFA History Book: Keep track of all your accomplishments in the challenges here.
  • Training Mode: Train your skills so that everyone that faces you doesn't stand a chance.

Improvements
There are some nice improvements to the game that are worth mentioning. The animations have been slightly improved, the game is also slightly smoother, the AI is also improved. There is a new feature in the game that we call "quickies" that are good in some situations, for example: The ball goes out for a throw in, and then a small text appears – "press 5 for quick throw in" – when you press 5 (or whatever you have assigned) then the annoying throw in cutscene skips and you´re ready to throw the ball directly. Also when you play at nighttime, you'll notice all the beautiful lights that light up the pitch from the stadium "walls" or roofs. The game is also supposed to feature snow, although we haven't seen that yet.

Unlockables
There aren't many unlockables, but the ones featured are really nice and entertaining, there are some cool footballs, for example one smiley ball, and ball with the globe painted on it. There are also two locked stadiums, Highbury and the absolutely beautiful Ultimate UEFA stadium, which looks magnificent. And the final unlockables are some cool turf modifications.

So what do you think now?

Excited, then pre-order this game today and save yourself some cash at the same time! Visit our Sweetpatch Shop today by clicking here to pre-order your copy of this fantastic game so it arrives with you on its launch date this Friday 23rd March 2007.

UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 News - Xbox 360 Review

IGN have reviewed the Xbox 360 version of the game and conclude that "The greatest club football tournament in the world comes to 360, but all the skill, finesse and excitement gets lost in translation".

Rating
(out of 10)
Description
8.5
Presentation
Slick and very polished, it’s every bit the authentic product you’d expect it to be, with all the correct teams and players, plus cool new game modes.
8.0
Graphics
Still the best looking next-gen football game around, with great TV-style replays and superb animation. Players still look a bit plasticky though.
8.5
Sound
Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend provide the best commentary in any football game, plus the crowd chants and in-game effects match the action perfectly.
5.0
Gameplay
Slow, unresponsive and stupid, and that’s just your team mates. Tackling is too difficult and scoring is too easy, with everything in between a forgettable mess.
7.0
Lasting Appeal
There’s plenty of options, with the 42-game Challenge mode and online play a highlight, if you can stomach the painfully slow gameplay.
6.0
Passable

English Premier League Review

English Premier League ReviewWe bring you all the latest news from this weekend's games in the English Premiership.

Saturday 17th March 2007

Blackburn Rovers 1 v 2 West Ham United
West Ham United manager Alan Curbishley was entitled to celebrate after his struggling side moved off the foot of the table by ending a run of five straight league defeats with victory over Blackburn Rovers. But it needed a controversial goal from substitute Bobby Zamora to secure the points and their first away win on the road in the Barclays Premiership this season. Referee Howard Webb ruled that his effort 15 minutes from time had crossed the line. TV replays failed to back the official’s decision and Carlos Tevez also appeared to be in an offside position when Zamora's shot struck him as he stood in the goalmouth, but Webb awarded the goal on the advice of his assistant referee. It was just the break the Hammers needed after Tevez’s penalty had cancelled out the opener from Blackburn’s Christopher Samba.

Chelsea 3 v 0 Sheffield United
Chelsea kept the heat on leaders Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premiership with a comfortable demolition job on struggling Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge. The Blues warmed-up for Monday night’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane with an easy win - courtesy of goals from Andriy Shevchenko, Salomon Kalou and substitute Michael Ballack.

Manchester United 4 v 1 Bolton Wanderers
Manchester United signalled their intention not to let a mounting injury list derail their Treble drive as they smashed four past Bolton Wanderers for the second time this season. Park Ji-Sung and Wayne Rooney both scored twice as Sir Alex Ferguson’s men surged to a victory which leaves them requiring a maximum 18 points from their last eight games to end a four-year title drought. Bolton bagged a late consolation when Gary Speed slotted home from the spot after Nemanja Vidic had been ruled to have fouled Abdoulaye Faye.

Middlesbrough 0 v 2 Manchester City
Manchester City eased the pressure on manager Stuart Pearce as they snatched a precious Barclays Premiership victory at Middlesbrough. The former England international, who headed for Teesside on the back of five successive league defeats, set off home with three points and the cheers of his club’s travelling supporters ringing in his ears just days after coming under fire after their FA Cup exit at Blackburn Rovers. Sylvain Distin’s 61st-minute strike - only the club’s second in seven league games - and Emile Mpenza’s first for the club, 17 minutes from time, ended an unhappy run that had seen the club slide to the brink of the relegation zone.

Reading 0 v 0 Portsmouth
Portsmouth came within inches of snatching victory at the Madejski Stadium, but had to be content with a goalless draw against Reading.

Tottenham Hotspur 3 v 1 Watford
Paul Robinson scored an extraordinary goal from his own half to embarrass his England rival Ben Foster in Tottenham Hotspur's Barclays Premiership victory over Watford. Jermaine Jenas had given Spurs the lead just before the break. Hossam Ghaly, however, added a third with five minutes left that Foster could do little about, with Darius Henderson grabbing a late consolation.

Wigan Athletic 0 v 0 Fulham
Wigan Athletic and Fulham each nudged a point closer to Barclays Premiership survival after serving up a goalless draw at a drizzly JJB Stadium on Saturday.

Sunday 18th March 2007

Aston Villa 0 v 0 Liverpool
Aston Villa produced a dogged performance to halt their recent slump and put a dent into Liverpool's hopes of claiming third spot in the Barclays Premiership.

Charlton Athletic 2 v 0 Newcastle United
Zheng Zhi used his head to dramatically improve Charlton Athletic's chances of staying in the Barclays Premiership. The China international midfielder headed a 54th-minute goal against Newcastle United, and won an 88th-minute penalty which Jerome Thomas converted to turn Addicks’ home into Happy Valley again.

Everton 1 v 0 Arsenal
Andy Johnson grabbed a late winner as snow fell on Goodison Park to add further woe to Arsenal's season.

Aston Villa 0 v 1 Arsenal
Arsenal put their treble cup heartbreak behind them to climb into the top three of the Barclays Premiership - with a fortuitous goal from Abou Diaby sinking Martin O'Neill's side.

Manchester City 0 v 1 Chelsea
Chelsea moved to within six points of Barclays Premiership leaders Manchester United thanks to Frank Lampard's 20th goal of the season. The England midfielder sent Manchester City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson the wrong way from the spot in the 28th minute after Micah Richards had been punished for tripping Salomon Kalou.

FA Cup News - Semi Final Draw

FA Cup News - Semi Final DrawThe draw for last four of this season's FA Cup was made at Soho Square on Monday afternoon.

Blackburn feel they would be worthy winners of The FA Cup sponsored by E.ON after the tough run they have had to this season's semi-final. They will face either Tottenham or Chelsea in the last four having beaten Manchester City at home in the quarter-finals. Before that tie, Blackburn had to overcome two other Premiership teams, having been drawn away at Everton and Arsenal, as well as Luton in the Fourth Round.

The two favourites, Manchester United and Chelsea, were kept apart in the semi-final draw, with Watford being drawn against the winners of United and Middlesbrough's quarter-final replay.

Here is the line up:

  1. Blackburn v Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur
  2. Watford v Middlesbrough or Manchester United

Ties to be played the weekend of 14 and 15 April 2007.

FA Cup News - 6th Round Review

FA Cup News - 6th Round ReviewFollowing this weekend's 6th round matches, we check out a brief summary of all the action below.

Middlesbrough 2 v 2 Manchester United
Cristian Ronaldo's penalty earned Manchester United a replay after Middlesbrough threatened a shock in the FA Cup quarter-final at the Riverside. United lost keeper Edwin van der Sar in the warm-up, but Wayne Rooney's low drive put them ahead after 23 minutes. Lee Cattermole volleyed Middlesbrough level on the stroke of half-time. George Boateng headed Boro's second a minute after the interval, but then handled Rio Ferdinand's header after 66 minutes and Ronaldo equalised.

Chelsea 3 v 3 Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea came back from two goals down to earn an FA Cup quarter-final replay. Dimitar Berbatov smashed the ball past Petr Cech to put Tottenham ahead but Chelsea hit back when Frank Lampard turned in Michael Ballack's shot. Spurs regained the lead when Michael Essien turned Aaron Lennon's cross into his own net and Hossam Ghaly slotted home a third after a powerful run. Lampard pulled a goal back with a close-range volley and Salomon Kalou cracked in the equaliser late on.

Blackburn Rovers 2 v 0 Manchester City
Aaron Mokoena's first Blackburn goal was followed by his first red card as 10-man Rovers became the first team to reach this season's FA Cup semi-finals. Mokoena fired Blackburn in front after 28 minutes when Manchester City failed to deal with Stephen Warnock's cross. But the South African was sent off with 20 minutes left after a second booking. City made few chances in a feisty game, with Matt Derbyshire's late tap-in securing victory for Rovers.

Plymouth Argyle 0 v 1 Watford
Watford scraped into the semi-finals of the FA Cup but were made to work for their progress by a valiant Plymouth. Hamuer Bouazza powered in a left-foot shot to put the visitors ahead but the goal galvanised Plymouth. Watford keeper Ben Foster palmed away a Kevin Gallen free-kick and denied Sylvan Ebanks-Blake when one-on-one as Plymouth created plenty of chances. But they were frustrated by Foster and their lack of a finishing touch as they bowed out of the competition.

UEFA Champions League Review - First Knockout Round

UEFA Champions League ReviewWe have now returned from London after a fantastic few days taking in Chelsea v Porto (lots of photos and videos to follow very soon). Following this week's matches, we check out a brief summary of all the action below.

Lyon 0 v 2 Roma (0 v 2)
AS Roma qualified for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time as a masterful display of counterattacking football earned a decisive victory at the home of Olympique Lyonnais. Clinical first-half strikes from Francesco Totti and Mancini were enough to end Lyon's hopes and thus break an unbeaten home record in the competition stretching back to 2002.

Liverpool 0 v 1 Barcelona (2ag v 2)
Liverpool withstood a late barrage by FC Barcelona to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals as the 2005 winners ousted the holders on away goals, despite Eidur Gudjohnsen bringing the visitors a 1-0 victory at Anfield. With the aggregate scores level at 2-2, Liverpool's first-leg success proved decisive and kept the five-time champions dreaming of another triumph.

Chelsea 2 v 1 Porto (3 v 2)
For 33 minutes, Chelsea FC's UEFA Champions League dream was in peril but second-half goals from Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack sent Jose Mourinho's side into the quarter-finals for the third time in four years and at the expense of his former club.

Valencia 0 v 0 Inter Milan (2ag v 2)
Valencia CF endured a nerve-jangling but effective 0-0 draw with FC Internazionale Milano to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years.

AC Milan 1 v 0 Celtic aet (1 v 0)
AC Milan advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive season but they needed extra time to secure a 1-0 victory over Celtic FC at San Siro.

Arsenal 1 v 1 PSV (1 v 2)
Alex's dramatic 83rd-minute header sent PSV Eindhoven through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League as the visitors battled back to draw 1-1 with Arsenal FC and advance 2-1 on aggregate.

Manchester United 1 v 0 Lille (2 v 0)
Henrik Larsson found the perfect way to say goodbye to Old Trafford, the on-loan striker scoring the goal that confirmed Manchester United FC's passage to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2003.

Bayern Munich 2 v 1 Real Madrid (4ag v 4)
Roy Makaay scored the fastest-ever goal in the UEFA Champions League as FC Bayern München overturned Real Madrid CF's 3-2 first-leg advantage with a fine 2-1 victory at the Fußball Arena München to book a place in the quarter-finals.

UEFA Champions League Preview

UEFA Champions League PreviewWhat's this I see, José Mourinho laughing as he has just heard that Dave, Jamie and Dan are travelling up from Cornwall on a Sweetpatch tour to see Chelsea v Porto tonight? No, it is just him in good humour in advance of tonight's match.

Chelsea approach the next hurdle in their quest for UEFA Champions League glory with manager José Mourinho insisting their achievements in adversity this season are more deserving of praise even than the previous two campaigns when they were crowned champions of England.

As his players prepare to build on the 1-1 draw they gained in the first leg at FC Porto, Mourinho cited a number of reasons why they can be proud of the progress they have made this term. This competition is one of three remaining targets on Chelsea's horizon with an FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur to follow this weekend and the English League Cup already in the bag after their defeat of Arsenal a week last Sunday.

Mourinho's one regret is that he is unable to field his strongest XI against the club he guided to the summit of the European game three years ago. Terry needs more time to recover from the head injury which saw him carried off against Arsenal, so it is likely that Essien will again fill the vacancy in central defence.

Jesualdo Ferreira's team arrived in London without right-back Bosingwa after he sustained a thigh problem in the Liga leaders' 1-0 defeat of SC Braga, although Porto captain Lucho González has overcome a similar complaint suffered on Saturday. The coach has a decision to make about whom to give goalscoring responsibilities to, with weekend matchwinner Adriano putting pressure on Hélder Postiga.

Ferreira is fully respectful of Chelsea's achievements, but says Porto are good enough to reach the quarter-finals. "We are a young team but a good team," he said. "We have to be more sure of ourselves than we were in the first leg, but it doesn't worry us that Chelsea have such a strong record at home as that does not mean anything in itself. This is a game between a great team and a team that wants to become great."

Look forward to plenty of photos from the game on our return.

English Premier League Review

English Premier League ReviewWe bring you all the latest news from this yesterday's games in the English Premiership.

Bolton Wanderers 1 v 2 Blackburn Rovers
Benni McCarthy's two penalties earned three points for Blackburn Rovers at the Reebok Stadium but only after a late disallowed goal broke Bolton Wanderers' hearts. The South African kept his cool to fire spot-kicks low to Jussi Jaaskelainen’s right in the 57th and 67th minutes before Bolton battled back to almost claim a point. Nicolas Anelka found the net two minutes from time before an injury-time header from Abdoulaye Faye seemed to have brought the home side level - only for a linesman to flag for offside.

West Ham United 3 v 4 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur scored twice in a dramatic finish at Upton Park to leave West Ham United rooted to the foot of the table. The Hammers, having sacrificed a two-goal lead, had been six minutes from three precious Barclays Premiership points after Bobby Zamora headed them into a 3-2 lead. But Dimitar Berbatov curled in a late free-kick and Spurs then hit West Ham on the break with Paul Stalteri poking home the winner deep into injury-time. It was heartbreaking stuff for the Hammers, who remain anchored to the bottom of the Barclays Premiership, 10 points from safety with nine games remaining.

English Premier League Review

English Premier League ReviewWe bring you all the latest news from this yesterday's games in the English Premiership.

Arsenal 2 v 1 Reading
Arsenal went some way to putting a turbulent week behind them with a 2-1 victory over Reading at the Emirates Stadium. After one of the misses of the season from Cesc Fabregas, second-half goals via Brazilian duo Gilberto, from a penalty, and Julio Baptista proved enough for victory. However, there was a tense finale when Fabregas put through his own net following a Reading corner.

Fulham 1 v 1 Aston Villa
Carlos Bocanegra cancelled out John Carew's opener to earn Fulham a draw against Aston Villa in the Barclays Premiership clash at Craven Cottage.

Liverpool 0 v 1 Manchester United
Manchester United took a giant step towards the Barclays Premiership title with a smash-and-grab victory at Liverpool. Substitute John O'Shea's injury-time winner was enough to seal all three points for a Red Devils side down to 10 men after the dismissal of Paul Scholes five minutes from time.

Manchester City 0 v 1 Wigan Athletic
Bargain-buy Caleb Folan condemned struggling Manchester City to a fourth consecutive Barclays Premiership defeat and left Wigan Athletic tantalisingly close to survival. The £500,000 transfer window arrival from Chesterfield nodded home Latics’ first-half winner to continue a revival which seems likely to preserve the north-west outfit’s top-flight status.

Newcastle United 0 v 0 Middlesbrough
Newcastle United's European hopes took a dent as they failed to make the most of their dominance over derby rivals Middlesbrough.

Portsmouth 0 v 2 Chelsea
Deadly Didier Drogba and substitute Salomon Kalou helped Chelsea cut Manchester United's lead to nine points at the top of the Barclays Premiership. Drogba, whose double won the Carling Cup for the Blues last Sunday, put Chelsea in command with a first-half volley at Fratton Park. The strike, his 29th goal of the season in all competitions, capped a remarkable week for the Ivory Coast international who was named African player of the year in midweek.

Sheffield United 1 v 1 Everton
Paddy Kenny's mistake handed Everton a point as Sheffield United suffered further penalty heart-break against Merseyside opposition (the fifth penalty this season given away by United to Liverpool and Everton). United appeared poised to pull away from the relegation zone when Rob Hulse scored his eighth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. But 15 minutes from time a mistake from Kenny enabled Mikel Arteta to rifle home the equaliser from the spot.

Watford 2 v 2 Charlton Athletic
Watford moved off the bottom of the Barclays Premiership for the first time since early December but their 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic leaves both sides in deep relegation trouble. First-half strikes from Hameur Bouazza and Damien Francis were not enough for Adrian Boothroyd’s side to record only their fourth top-flight victory of the season. Charlton, presumably having received a half-time ear-bashing from manager Alan Pardew, were greatly improved after the break and salvaged a point through Darren Ambrose’s 89th-minute header after Luke Young had pulled one back midway through the second half.
