Interview with Line Producer for UEFA EURO 2004

Buy UEFA EURO 2004 todayPALgaming have a unique interview with Joe Nickolls - Line Producer for UEFA EURO 2004. Below are a few snippets from the interview:

Q. How has the game engine changed from FIFA 2004?
A: We spent the whole year working on our game engine. We've tuned everything from the game speed, to reaction times for players. From New skill moves to improved crossing, etc.

It's very important to understand that EURO is a completely different team from FIFA, we work right beside them but the key point is we have put a lot of enhancements and new features into our game.

Q. Will you be able to partake in the EURO 2004 qualifying rounds when playing through the competition if desired?
A: Absolutely. You'll be able to play as any one of the 51 nations in qualifying, friendly and finals.

Q. Will we see any new skills/showboat actions for the players to perform?
A: We have 12 new skill moves available to the players. These will be triggered with the right button presses and are based on where the player is, where the defence is, which way he's headed and his overall skill move. Great moves like the Nutmeg and Lollipop are in there. (There are also Fake Shots, Diving Headers, Bicycle Kicks, Chips Shots and more)

Q. Which of the platforms will feature online play?
A: for this title - PC only.

Q. What advancement from FIFA 2004 are you most proud of?
A: I think it's got to be two things. The morale system of play, and the gameplay in general. So far all of our reviews have noticed we've put a lot into our AI.

Check out the full interview at PALgaming.

Arsenal Crowned as Champions

Arsenal Crowned as ChampionsTo celebrate Arsenal's awesome achievement today we dedicate some space to the English Premiership this weekend.

Arsenal were crowned Barclaycard Premiership champions at the sweetest of venues for a title triumph - White Hart Lane - following a 2-2 draw against north London rivals Tottenham.

The Gunners made a blistering start as Thierry Henry set off on a charging run before slipping the ball through to Dennis Bergkamp, who, even at 34, still had the pace to evade Simon Davies before delivering a pinpoint cross to Vieira, who slid the ball into an inviting net.

Arsenal doubled their lead with a scintillating one-touch move as Bergkamp and Vieira opened up the defence with alarming ease before Robert Pires was left with the close-range finish as he clipped his shot past Kasey Keller.

But Spurs fought back and reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute thanks to a superb 22-yard from Jamie Redknapp which left Jens Lehmann with no chance.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sent on Edu to steady the ship, replacing Ray Parlour, but Henry and Pires both wasted chances to seal victory as they struck the side-netting and crossbar respectively when clean through.

Keller also foiled Henry once again and Spurs made Arsenal pay, at least on the day, for those rare lapses as Lehmann's push on Robbie Keane was punished by the Irishman's confident penalty in stoppage time.

Manchester City had a lucky late escape at Leicester but remain in deep trouble at the bottom of the Barclaycard Premiership after a 1-1 draw at the Walkers Stadium.

England goalkeeper David James saved a late Paul Dickov spot-kick which was hotly disputed as tempers frayed on either side of the touchline.

The Foxes stay second from bottom and Kevin Keegan's side are only three points above the relegation zone with 17th-placed Leeds playing tomorrow.

Fellow strugglers Blackburn moved up to 13th with a crucial 1-0 win at Everton. Jon Stead scored the only goal as he met Andy Cole's cross with a glancing header.

At the top, Liverpool got back on course to finish fourth and claim a Champions League place with a 1-0 win over bitter rivals Manchester United.

Aston Villa are up to fifth after coming from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

Fulham's outside hopes of a place in Europe for next season were boosted as they beat Charlton 2-0 at Loftus Road.

Bolton came from behind to see off Southampton 2-1 in a mid-table clash at St Mary's as Kevin Davies came back to haunt the Saints.

Wolves' slender hopes of survival in the Barclaycard Premiership are all but over as they drew 2-2 at neighbours Birmingham in a game they realistically needed to win.

Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer smashed home a stunning long-range effort to hammer the final nail into Chelsea's coffin in a 2-1 victory at St James' Park.

Leeds' hopes of staying in the top flight suffered a major setback as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Portsmouth at Elland Road.

Second Developer Interview

Buy UEFA EURO 2004 today The next in EA UK's series of community Q&A sessions with the Euro 2004 team is now live!

Here's a sample of what they said:

  • Larger imageQ. Will Euro 2004 include the top 40 players from each country or is that only for the big countries like England, Germany, Italy and so on?
  • A. We have included the top players from ALL 51 nations. However, needless to say, some nations have more "star" players than others.
  • Larger imageQ. Have there been any changes or improvements to goal net actions?
  • A. We have made some adjustments to the net actions. Most of our emphasis has been on the posts. You'll see some amazing shots ring off the bar and react in realistic ways that haven't been seen before, for example post to post rebounds.
  • Larger imageQ. Will players be able to get injured during training, thus missing the tournament? If so, will the rules apply that govern how near to the tournament you can replace your lineup?
  • A. We follow all the rules of UEFA and player eligibility. There will be injuries and consequent morale effects for all the players as well. For example, if your team has lost a few games in a row their morale will go down, affecting your abilities. If your player is also stuck on the bench during these losses they'll be hit even harder. We also have other random "real life" events that will affect your players' situation.
  • Larger imageQ. Will you have control of the training scheme in the run up to Euro 2004?
  • A. In Practice modes you can do whatever you want to train. There isn't actual training you must do in the run up to the Euro 2004 event.

Head over to their Interviews section to get more information on the official game of the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament.

Monaco 3 v 1 Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteA night which seemed to be going so well at half time with Chelsea level at 1-1 with a precious away goal and bossing the match, collapsed disastrously in the second half as 10 men Monaco ran out 3-1 winners.

Chelsea had fallen behind after 15 minutes from a header by Prso as the Blues started in very uncertain fashion at the back. However a great bit of clinical finishing by Hernan Crespo 5 minutes later turned the balance of power in the first half and Chelsea, and especially Lampard, took control of the remainder of the half.

Ranieri decided at half time to change things though and brought Gronkjaer off for Veron but the change didn't seem to have the desired effect and Chelsea couldn't carry on from where they left off at half time. However a controversial sending off against Monaco gave Chelsea a wonderful opportunity to not only win the game but the tie as well against 10 men. Yet it didn't pan out like that, further substitutions of Hasselbaink for Melchiot and then later Huth for Parker seemed to break up any Chelsea rhythm and they couldn't create the chances to get the second goal.

10 man Monaco then stunned the Blues by scoring two late break away goals to leave Chelsea instead of being in a winning position, now with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Fifa 2004 Announced as World Cyber Game

World Cyber Games

Earlier this week ,The World Cyber Games Organisation released the list of Games that will be played at this years WCG Finals in Los Angela's.

There was much discussion and rumour floating around the World Fifa Community that Fifa wouldn't be a game selected this year, so many people were holding their breath.

I'm delighted to announce that Fifa 2004 was picked and the World Fifa Community rejoiced in their thousands. It has become very evident over the past 3 years that the World Fifa Community is growing immensely and many look forward to the chance to represent their Nation in the Grand WCG Finals.

So now we know that Fifa 04 is indeed a game to be played at the WCG Finals our next question here in the UK is who will be running the event and when.

At this present moment, not much information is available on this, but here at the SFTLA we are very keen to run the event ourselves and make this years UK Finals for Fifa 04 the best they have ever been. As soon as we find out more information about this we will let you all know.

What we do know is that the UK Finals will be held around September or early October with the possible venues being either London or Birmingham.

Entry to the Finals will cost around 10 and Prizes will be awarded to the Winner(s) as well as the Top 2 Players qualifying for the All Expenses Paid Trip to Los Angela's to compete in the World Finals where a staggering $20,000 is up for grabs to the Winner.

Previous years has brought mixed fortunes for UK Players, with our best achievement being a Silver Medal in the 2002 Finals in Korea in the 2 v 2 Nation Finals.

I believe this year the UK Players will do well and will at least qualify from the Group Stage and hopes are high that this will be our first year that a UK Player will finish in the Prize Money Places. This Year, due to efforts from the SFTLA the standard and number of talented Fifa Players here in the UK is the most its ever been and this really does set us up for a fantastic Finals Day.

We will continue to bring you more information regarding the Fifa 2004 UK Finals as soon as we here more.

Manage Your Player in UEFA Euro 2004™

We will be taking a regular look at the features of the game in the build up to the release of UEFA Euro 2004™. This weekend we check out how you can Manage Your Player.

EURO 2004

Morale and its impact on Gameplay
Over the course of the EURO 2004 mode, specific events will cause a player’s morale to fluctuate both upwards and downwards:

  • When a player’s morale is high, he will perform at or above his attribute level.
  • When a player’s morale is low, he will perform below his attribute level.

New Player Traits
Player Traits are special abilities or traits that a player possesses. Traits are in the form of an on/off flags, so the player either does this or he doesn't. As morale will play an important part in the EURO 2004 mode, certain player traits can be turned on or off depending on the player’s state of mind for that match.

Euro 2004 Mode
You take the team through qualifying matches and friendlies to the EURO 2004 Finals. During qualifying you have a number of dates where you can choose to arrange a friendly match with a team of your choice. You have to pick your team based on morale and fitness and the performance on the day determines the player’s morale. Back to back successes will improve morale.

Player Fitness
Injuries can play a key role in a football team’s fortune, and this will be represented in the EURO 2004 mode. Injuries are part of the game and all teams will experience injuries of some kind. The Fitness section of the Team News screen will detail information regarding player health and injuries.

Team News Screen
The team news screen is where information about players will be displayed. Each nation will have approximately 40 eligible players that can play in matches.

  • The Team News screen can display information for any of these players (i.e. the player does not have to be in the first eleven to be referenced on the Team News screen).
  • The Team News screen will only display information on teams that are user controlled. Team news will not be viewable for Computer controlled teams – the Scouting Report screen will be used to display select information on a computer opponent.
  • The screen will be broken up into 3 sections – Fitness, Discipline and General.
    • The Player Fitness section will detail player injuries.
    • The Player Discipline section will detail disciplinary issues such as yellow cards, red cards and suspensions.
    • The Player – Miscellaneous section will detail player form, morale.

We will bring you news of more unique UEFA Euro 2004™ features soon.

Album of the Week: Idlewild - The Remote Part

Idlewild - The Remote PartHaving spent the majority of their career languishing in the middle of indie's second division, churning out superior angular guitar pop to mild acclaim, Idlewild use The Remote Part to make a bid for promotion to the grown-up's league.

UK Top 10 single "You Held the World in Your Arms" luxuriates in a widescreen confidence and love of grand gestures that had previously eluded the Scottish four-piece and sibilant single "American English" is bigger still, an anthem penned with lighter waving and the absurdity of universal truths in mind.

The Remote Part finds Idlewild in excellent form, buzzing with ambition, energy and intelligence, broadening out their style to take in the acoustics of "I Never Wanted", the fuzzed up rock of "A Modern Way" and even a poetry reading on "In Remote Part".

Click on the song titles above to hear snippets of this great album.

EURO 2004 Developer Interview

Buy UEFA EURO 2004 todayEA UK recently took a bunch of questions from the forums and passed them onto the best people to answer them - the developers. Here's a sample of what they said:

  • Q. Will Euro 2004 have the same file formats as FIFA 2004?
  • A. Yes it will. While the graphics engine has been tweaked and improved, the underlying file formats are still the same so moving from FIFA Football 2004 editing to Euro 2004 editing shouldn't be a problem.
  • Q. Is there going to be a Euro 2004 Creation Centre? If so, will it only be on PC or will there be a console version too?
  • A. There are no plans for a Euro 2004 Creation Centre, either for PC or console.
  • Q. What kind of music will we get with the game?
  • A. Like in FIFA Football 2004 you'll hear a mix of music styles from different countries. Having said that, the music is a a little more "rock" based this time around as that style of music is seeing a big resurgence in Europe.
  • Q. Will PC online play include a Direct IP option?
  • A. No, Direct IP play will not be an option in UEFA Euro™ 2004 on PC.
  • Q. Will you be able to change formation during matches?
  • A. Yes, this option will be included.
  • Q. Though the keeper AI in FIFA Football 2004 was certainly the best yet in an EA SPORTS football game, will it be further improved for Euro 2004?
  • A. Yes. This is a continuing evolution on all of our football titles. Specific time was spent on goal keeper AI on Euro.

Check out the rest of the questions and answers over at the official UEFA EURO 2004 UK community site. Also, if you have any further questions about UEFA Euro™ 2004, head over to their forums and let EA know!

Have you pre-orderd your copy of the game yet so it arrives at your home on 7th May 2004? If not, pay our Shop a visit and pre-order your copy today at our special low prices.

Claudio concedes the Premiership

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri waved goodbye to the Premiership title following Saturday’s goalless draw with Carling Cup winners Middlesbrough.

Conceding defeat, the Italian admitted: “I said Arsenal could only lose the title but after the Liverpool match I say well done, they are the champions. They are the champions because they showed - not quality, because they are full of quality - but fantastic reaction and fantastic character. Well done. In my opinion, they are now the Premiership champions.

Saturday’s disappointing result puts us six points behind Arsenal, with Manchester United, who picked up maximum points away at Birmingham, six points behind us. Both Arsenal and Manchester United have a game in hand over us and don’t forget we still have an Old Trafford showdown to come on May 8th.

With that in mind, how confident is the Chelsea head coach of securing second place in the Premiership?

Now we are fighting for the runners-up. Behind us there is a big shark,” he joked, “but we will try.

Asked whether he thought the Champions League was more important to him now than the Premiership, he responded:

The Champions League is a gamble. The Premiership is our season. The Champions League is a dream. The Premiership is our fort, our everything, all the year. Victory, defeat, everything, our consistencies. We can look on the table and think that was a good achievement. It wasn’t easy to improve so much. I think every time I can win everything: the Carling Cup, the FA Cup, everything. This is my philosophy.”

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - Ladder League

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - Ladder LeagueThe SFTLA Ladder League is a new concept for the new lads who have heard about the Academy and would like to take part in the leagues when there is available spacing via a drop out or starting a new season.

The idea of this ladder is to keep the new players active while waiting for their place and keep them in touch with the Academy, which has a great forum to boot. They can download the new players patch v1.3 which makes all teams/players, equal and on a level playing field so you can pick your fav local team and still compete with the likes of Real Madrid or Chelsea, etc.

At the moment this is open to UK players only and we have 9 players ready to start but more are welcome, but if we get enough oversea's interest we can also start a separate Oversea's Ladder League.

With the SFTLA having 4 leagues, Premiership and Divisions 1, 2 & 3 its important we try to keep the level of standard to the appropriate divisions so therefore if we have a very good player in the ladder who is ranked high, and there is a available place in either Prem or Div 1 then he will be nominated for those. If a lower division place is available in Div 2 or 3 then they will b nominated to players further down the ladder. (Some sort of ranking points will be introduced to match the leagues available).

Its important that the new lads read the SFTLA - Rules & Regs and Settings and also download the new Players Patch v1.3 and follow the instructions very carefully.

If you have any problems or questions then please email or add to MSN - nidgey@hotmail.com (League Chairman (PC)).

Sign up here today and have some great fun with us in our great new SFTLA Ladder League.

Bridge breaks Arsenal's hearts

Visit Chelsea mini siteThe all-London UEFA Champions League quarter-final ended with Chelsea FC triumphant as a Wayne Bridge goal with three minutes remaining of a tense and unrelenting struggle denied Arsenal FC their dream of European glory.

Just before that Eidur Gudjohnsen had seen a shot cleared off the line as Chelsea came on strong to earn a meeting with AS Monaco FC. The result gives Arsenal more frustration after their FA Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester United FC at the weekend and ends their unbeaten run of 17 games against their London rivals

Chelsea's selection threw up something of a surprise with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen forming an attacking spearhead for the first time in the competition. Mario Melchiot came in at right back, enabling William Gallas to replace the suspended Marcel Desailly in central defence.

Arsenal were soon in front in the tie for the first time. Lauren's cross from the right was perfect for Henry to nod back across goal. Ljungberg could not take advantage but Reyes arrived on cue.

It was the first goal Chelsea had conceded away from home in the competition and it persuaded Claudio Ranieri to introduce Jesper Grønkjær at the break in place of Scott Parker. And within six minutes they were back on equal terms.

The home team had repelled two or three attacks but their final clearance went only as far as Claude Makelele who shot hard and true. Lehmann was unable to field it cleanly and Lampard, following up, tucked the loose ball away.

After that the game paused for breath. It had been an incredible, unremitting struggle and the capacity crowd were enthralled by it all. Another clearance made under pressure invited Lampard to add a speculative second goal but this time he found only the side-netting, though it was a fine effort.

As time ticked away, a surprise came as Henry was withdrawn for Bergkamp while Joe Cole and Crespo arrived for Chelsea. And the visitors had the most energy, as first Jole Cole found Gudjohnsen to go close, and then moments later came the dramatic end. Chelsea are the first London side ever to progress so far in Europe's premier club competition.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Chelsea 1

Visit Chelsea mini siteJust four points behind leaders Arsenal; eight clear of United. Back in the Champions League pool for next season. Unbeaten in 17 years’ worth of League visits to ‘fort-less’ White Hart Lane.

The importance of this result massively outweighed its competitiveness. It was a mild game in almost every respect; few fouls, sporadic shooting opportunities, one or two bookings, some occasional broken sweat from a grateful Chelsea eyeing Tuesday’s momentous clash at Highbury. A Gentleman’s-excuse-me of a match.

If Chelsea’s thoughts were on next week’s return to north London, Spurs’ High Noon had already taken place – and how their fans enjoyed bitter rivals Arsenal being easily beaten by Manchester United.

After Gardner’s free header ballooned wide, and until the closing five minutes, when he saved well from an awkward header from the same Spurs player at a corner, Marco Ambrosio enjoyed an easy workout.

Chelsea’s 4-4-2, adapted to a 4-5-1 as manager of the month Claudio Ranieri looked to close the game and rest a few limbs, was always in command of a Spurs side whose season already looks spent.

Chelsea’s 37th minute winner came from a clinical move that defined the gulf in class between the two teams. Frank Lampard, Wayne Bridge combined well and a superb pass from a quiet Damien Duff set up Hasselbaink no problem bypassing Keller for his 11th goal against Spurs.

Hasselbaink’s 11th goal against one of our north London neighbours settled the match that earned yet another League double against them.

What price a few more against the others on Tuesday, as Chelsea maintain the pressure on two fronts.

Album of the Week: Lostprophets - Start Something

Lost Prophets - Start SomethingThis week we bring you our recommended Album of the Week, which is the excellent Lostprophets and their latest smash Start Something.

Start Something is an appropriate slogan for the Lostprophets, as that's exactly what the Welsh six-piece are doing on their second album. Rather than continuing down the nu-metal path suggested on their first album, thefakesoundofprogress, the Lostprophets have widened their scope and created a second album that's less an evolution and more a change of direction.

The Lostprophets haven't so much lost touch with their rock roots as spread them further, tapping into emo and hardcore as well as more familiar hip-hop tinged metal of recent tour mates Linkin Park (especially on "We Still Kill the Old Way" and "Make a Move").

In the style of Rage Against the Machine, first single "Burn, Burn" is a catchy teen-angst anthem with an unforgettable riff; standout second single "Last Train Home" out-emos the Lostprophets' American peers (including Good Charlotte, who provide guest vocals). Best of all, the willingness to experiment that the Lostprophets demonstrated on their debut remains on Start Something: "I Don't Know" and "Goodbye Tonight" even suggest recent American hardcore and emo pioneers such as At the Drive In.

Even singer Ian Watkins' voice has improved, so that he now sounds even more like Faith No More's Mike Patten--and that's no bad thing. Granted, few people over the age of 25 will have much time for the music or sentiments of Start Something, but it's doubtful that the Lostprophets or the millions of rock fans that this album should convert will be too concerned about that.

All our Albums of the Week are at our very special cut down prices. If you want to liven up your weekend then go and grab this excellent album for just £8.99 by clicking here.

You can find our full back catalog of Albums of the Week by clicking here.

Check out our SFTLA PC Rankings

SFTLA PC LeagueThe SFTLA PC Rankings were introduced to monitor the 40 players from all 4 divisions on the basis of a win, lose or draw result & the strength of the opposition (position in ranking table), which would determine what ranking points they received.

As you can see the teams are numbered 1-40 which is where they are currently ranked and also colour coded to determine what division there are from. By this you know exactly what teams are making good progress as well as the teams struggling or holding their own.

This comes in very handy to determine if there is any lower division players, who are too strong for their division. Also it can tell us the form players at the time, which is a good way too select an SFTLA Clan or International Team.

Here's a brief run down of the ranking positions so far in the SFTLA.

The most noticeable teams so far that you can monitor are as follows:

  • Deportivo, are a 1st div team and are rock bottom and yet to win a game, therefore they have been dropping down the ranking table. Although this is not done by league position format technically they are ranked a mid 2nd division side.

  • This also applies for Juventus and Walsall.

  • The biggest drop is PSV who at the start of the season were ranked a Premiership side, but as you can see have fallen like a lead balloon down the ranking table and this suggests that they are struggling and not getting to grips with the game and standard of their division. We now can see if there will be any improvement over the next few weeks and if not we can advise or help best we can to improve PSV's game.

  • On the other hand we can also see 3 teams from the 3rd division making good progress: Real Sociedad, Lazio and Boro.

  • AC Milan & Macclesfield are going great from the 2nd div and flying up the table which does tell us they are too strong for their division but also in great form and could challenge a few top players. Valencia, Celtic & Blackburn have made the break through and got in the top 10, where the top players are at the moment and could well be picked for future Clan or International Teams.

This is a great way to monitor teams/players and you can get all sorts of info from it as well as organising cup tourny's based on the standard they fall in.

Go check this all out and see what we mean in our SFTLA PC Ranking Table.
