Bad start for France |
Pape Bouba Diop scored the only goal as rookies Senegal stunned defending champions France 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup on Friday.
The Senegalese midfielder scored the 30th minute winner by poking the ball home after a cross from teammate El Hadji Diouf deflected off French defender Emmanuel Petit and then goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. Lacking injured playmaker Zinedine Zidane, the French missed many chances throughout the match at Seoul World Cup Stadium. One of the best scoring chances came in the 22nd minute when striker Trezeguet fired a right-foot hard shot that crashed into the right goalpost. A shot by Thierry Henry also knocked the crossbar in the 65th minute. France will take on Uruguay in Busan next Thursday and Denmark in Incheon on June 11 while Senegal are to play Denmark in Daegu next Thursday and Uruguay in Suwon June 11. Roberto Carlos to United? |
According to BBC, Real Madrid's left back Roberto Carlos says Manchester United have been in touch with him over a possible transfer.
In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Roberto Carlos said Sir Alex Ferguson had telephoned him on "various occasions" during the past two years. And the newspaper claimed Man United were poised to put in a bid of around £40m to secure his services, a fee which would be the highest paid by a British club by some distance. "It's true that Manchester wants me.", said Roberto Carlos, "Their interest is not new. Manchester has been asking about me for the last two years. Ferguson has spoken to me on various occasions and has told me that he likes me as a player." Posted by

Looking for a Captain |
Before the Argentina opening game with Nigeria, Argentina's squad will meet privately and cast ballots to decide who will be team captain.
Unlike other coaches, Marcelo Bielsa has always allowed his players to decide who will lead the team. And it's always been a closely guarded secret. "The issue of who will be captain is strictly private between us and we'd never give out any details." said midfielder Juan Pablo Sorin. This year, the front-runners are seen as Valencia defender Roberto Ayala and AS Roma striker Gabriel Batistuta, with Lazio’s veteran Diego Simeone also a possible contender. As coach Bielsa still undecided as to whether to start with Batistuta or Lazio's Hernan Crespo up front, Ayala is the most logical option. He captained Argentina during the World Cup qualifiers. Simeone, who recently recovered from a serious knee injury, captained the side in France 1998 and has won the most caps in Argentine history, but Batistuta is Argentina's all-time leading scorer. Fowler quick on the draw for England |
| England | 2 | v | Cameroon | 2 | Vassell 11, Fowler 90 | | | Eto'o 4, Geremi 56 | | England's final warm up match before the World Cup ended in a draw on Sunday when Robbie Fowler's late header ensured that the spoils were shared after Cameroon had twice taken the lead. Fowler's astute 90th minute header avoided defeat on a day when steering clear of injuries was just as important as the result itself.
The day started in encouraging fashion for England when, in front of thousands of adoring fans, David Beckham enjoyed a warm up with phsyio Alan Smith which saw the England skipper kicking the ball with both feet in public for the first time since his untimely injury against Deportivo La Coruna. Furthermore, the sight of Kieron Dyer sprinting up and down the pitch with the ball at his feet before the game can only have heartened Sven-Goran Eriksson as the England coach finalises his preparations for the match with Sweden on June 2. The match, on the other hand, did not start quite so well for the Three Lions. Read all about it over at TheFA.com. France getting ready |
World Cup holders France edged past World Cup co-hosts South Korea 3-2 in an international friendly match on today.
Striker David Trezeguet scored the opener in the 15th minute, though the home team came back to equalize with a 25-minute goal by midfielder Park Ji-sung at Suwon World Cup Stadium. A stunning header by striker Seol Ki-hyeon 15 minutes later put the home side up front and the men of Les Bleus trudged up the pitch at halftime. Coming into the second half, France tied the game with a shot by Christophe Dugarry 52-minute into play and moved ahead with the fifth goal of the match with a long range shot by Frank Leboeuf with minutes remaining before the end of regulation time. The loss by the home team ended its seven game no-loss record though the overall performance of the 40th ranked team against the favorites to take home the World Cup is expected to raise morale. South Korea will take on Poland June 4 followed by matches with the United States and Portugal in the tournament round of competition. - Scorers: South Korea - 21-Park Ji-sung 25, 9-Seol Ki-hyeon 40 - France - 20-David Trezeguet 15, 21-Christophe Dugarry 52, 18-Frank Leboeuf 88 - Halftime: 2-1 - Red Cards: None Posted by

Ronaldo is (finally??) back |
Only in the second half, three quick goals by substitute players delivered Brazil a 4-0 win over Malaysia in the South Americans' last warmup before the World Cup.
Brazil’s coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, is unlikely to take much joy from the victory, however, after a dry first half by the Brazilians, including the debut of highly vaunted attacking trio Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho. The promising front line failed to live up to expectations, although Ronaldo scored Brazil's first goal from a pass from Ronaldinho in the 51st minute. It was the substitutes' second-half blitz that was most notable for Brazil. Coach Scolari told reporters after the match the attack trio lacked aggression in winning the ball, but said he was satisfied overall with the team's performance: "The 3-Rs' need to do more to win the ball in the midfield to put pressure on our opponents,", Scolari said, " I want more participation from them." This friendly match was the first on-field glimpse of the attacking lineup Scolari is expected to use in Brazil's World Cup opener against Turkey on the 3 of June. Posted by

Tension tension tension |
After the incident in the French Camp, the tension came to the Swedish camp too, when Fredrik Ljungberg and Olof Mellberg have been involved in a training ground bust-up.
After an hour of the team's second workout in Japan, Mellberg came in hard and late on Ljungberg, who reacted angrily, grabbing his compatriot, before Daniel Andersson and Henrik Larsson stepped in to separate the pair. Both players later played down the incident. "Such things happen when you play," said Arsenal’s midfielder Ljungberg, "If a player has been making tackles like that you have to respond. It happened a few times that he was a bit late tackling me. You can't tolerate that, but it's forgotten now" Aston Villa’s player Mellberg rushed to put this all incident behind him, and said: "Of course I regret it. You can't put a positive spin on what I did, It is nothing you can be proud about. It was stupid." Posted by

Keane out of squad again, this time for good |
The continuing saga of Roy Keane's on-again, off-again place in the Republic of Ireland's World Cup squad has apparently reached a conclusion. Ireland manager Mick McCarthy announced that the Manchester United midfielder has been sent home from the team's training camp in Saipan, and will not be allowed to play in the World Cup finals. Given Keane's previous stated intention that this would be his last tournament in international football, it appears his career with the national team has come to an end. According to reports, McCarthy dismissed his captain after a confrontation during a team meeting Thursday night. "I cannot and will not tolerate that level of abuse being thrown at me, so I sent him home," McCarthy told the BBC. "I have made the right decision, not only for the benefit of me but for the squad. "This is a huge decision but I am happy to go to the World Cup one man down rather than with a man who shows utter disregard and disrespect for me." Celtic midfielder Colin Healy had been named to replace Keane the first time he was dropped, but FIFA has indicated that he will not be allowed to join the squad this time since Keane's removal, which occurred past the deadline for turning in rosters, was not injury-related. "According to regulations, a list of players has been nominated by May 21 and from then a player may only be replaced if there is a serious injury...before that team's first match," FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said. "That does not appear to be the case with Roy Keane." Steve Staunton, the Republic's most-capped player, will take over as team captain. Regarding the incident, Staunton backed his manager. "It was unacceptable and I'm not going to say anything different to what's been said," Staunton commented. "I've never witnessed anything like it in my life and there is a line, you can't cross it and unfortunately Roy has crossed it." Posted by

Keano briefly out of Republic squad |
Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane was momentarily out of his country's World Cup side. Officially, the Football Association of Ireland said that Keane was concerned about his troublesome knee, as well as some ongoing "personal problems." But reports soon surfaced that the Manchester United midfielder quit following a training camp row with manager Mick McCarthy and coach Packie Bonner. Keane was reportedly upset that goalkeepers had been excused from a particular drill, leaving outfield players to man the goals during a five-a-side exercise. McCarthy denied that such an incident took place. His name was left off of the provisional squad list the FAI faxed to FIFA, with Celtic midfielder Colin Healy listed in his place. However, FIFA confirmed that Keane was on the final list turned in by the FAI. Posted by

Cup Holders |
Infront of 40,000 fans at the Ramat-Gan Stadium, Maccabi Tel-Aviv won it second Cup in a row (and 22 in total), after winning over the champions Maccabi Haifa.
Both teams had their share of chances to finish the game, the most dangerous situation came near the end of regular time, when Haifa's Yossi Benayoun, in his last game before moving to Spanish Primera Liga, dribbled inside the box, passed his defender, but faild to beat goalkeeper Strauber. The game went into 30 minutes extra time, after both teams failed to score, but even extra 30 minutes, plus a good tempo of the game did not brought any goals, and they went to penalty shootout, just to strech the fans untill the end. Even in the penalty shootout, the game went into the last moments, when all 8 kicks by both teams were scored. The last kick for Maccabi Haifa took, elected Player Of The Year, Giovanni Rosso, who missed it. The last kick for Maccabi Tel-Aviv took Avi Nimny, the team Captain, who scored it smoothly to the left corner ,to mark the start of the celebrations for the second year in a row winning the cup. Park earns draw for Korea |
| South Korea | 1 | - | England | 1 | | Park, 51 | | | Owen, 25 | | Before this game Sven had said that he thought it would be excellent preparation for the tests that lie ahead for his team and it certainly proved that they can take nothing for granted when they begin their World Cup campaign in earnest in eleven days time. Just as will be the case in every match in Japan, England faced a team full of pride and determination this evening and the World Cup hosts, for whom this was an occasion of quite some magnitude, richly deserved the draw that they celebrated like a victory on the final whistle. England's performance was by no means poor - we played some entertaining football and wowed the crowd with some long passes and close skill - but Sven may feel that we should have dominated the game to a greater extent than we managed. However, the priority in this game was preparation and the fact that the manager was able to field every fit player available to him at this time, means that it was a worthwhile exercise. Irish lose to Nigeria, head to Saipan |
Mick McCarthy's Republic of Ireland squad dropped their friendly against Nigeria on Saturday by a 2-1 score. It was Ireland's first loss at Lansdowne Road in more than two years. Nigeria went on the offensive early on, scoring in the 13th minute off a strike from Julius Aghahowa. Less than two minutes later, Crewe defender Efe Sodje headed in a corner kick from Pius Ikedia to give the Nigerians a two-goal margin. Millwall midfielder Steven Reid, an injury replacement in the squad because of Mark Kennedy's groin injury, pulled one back for the Irish in the 69th minute, but the Republic squad, despite peppering goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu, failed to come up with an equalizer. "This has given us a lot to think about," McCarthy said after the match. "I joked about losing this game, and we didn't mean to lose it, to rein a few people in on the expectation level." "Maybe this result is what we need to jerk us back into reality. It highlights what a good side we will be playing in Cameroon, who I think are better than Nigeria." The squad has already arrived at its pre-World Cup finals training camp on the Pacific island of Saipan. Its first match is June 1 against Cameroon. Posted by

US falls to Holland in final tune-up |
The US national team lost its final match on American soil before heading off to the Far East, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of surprising non-qualifiers Holland. Deportivo La Coruna striker Roy Makaay slipped a ball past Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel just before half time, and Ajax striker Andy van der Meyde capitalized on a defensive lapse by the US for the final tally in the 76th minute. US coach Bruce Arena said in his post-match comments that he was generally pleased with his team's performance on Sunday. "We gave up two goals that we could have done better with," Arena said. "I think we created chances, and they did as well. Their goalkeeper had a great game today. "We had a bunch of players that played extremely well. I'm certainly not disappointed in the performance. I think it was just an outstanding game to play in. The Dutch team was a little bit more experienced and had better physical qualities, but an outstanding game. "I think the number of chances we created was encouraging. We have to get a little cleaner in the defensive end of the field. Overall, (there were) a lot of good things today." Arena also announced that he was naming defender Steve Cherundolo to the squad to take the place of midfielder Chris Armas, who tore an ACL in the May 11 match against Uruguay. "I think we need some cover in the back, especially in the outside back positions," Arena told the US soccer federation's web site. "I think Cherundolo gives us other options in the back." Cherundolo, who plays for German second division side Hannover 96, has earned ten caps. He started seven of the ten CONCACAF qualifying matches for the US. "There are still a number of spots that are open," Arena added. "We got some really good performances from some guys this week, and we're going to evaluate that before we decide what kind of lineup we go with against Portugal. I'm encouraged by the play of our 23-man roster." The team will fly to its Korea-based training center on Thursday. Posted by

David Beckham |
Voices around the England national team insist that David Beckham will be fit for their opening World Cup clash with Sweden on 2nd of June, even though his left foot is still out of commission.
Beckham, who is nursing a broken metatarsal bone in his left foot, was restricted to a light training session on Friday, the final full day of England's stay in Dubai ahead of the South Korea and Japan World Cup finals. "It is true that David is still unable to kick the ball with his left foot," said Football Association spokesman Paul Newman. "David took part in today's work out. He jogged for some time before carrying out light training with the ball. But I still don't think he can use his left foot properly. We are working in close liaison with doctors at Manchester United and he will definitely catch our first match against Sweden." Posted by

US plays two tune-up matches, loses Armas to injury |
The US team played two matches last week as their preparations for the 2002 World Cup continued. On May 8, the team wrapped up a ten-day training camp in Cary, North Carolina with a 2-2 draw to the Richmond Kickers, a club in the US second division. While the US team controlled the ball throughout most of the game, and took the lead in the 18th minute off a goal from Josh Wolff, the Kickers were able to exploit holes in the US defence, levelling the match before the half and taking a 2-1 lead early in the second half with a goal by Kevin Jeffrey. The US left it late, with a blast from Earnie Stewart in the 86th minute grabbing a share of the spoils. The match was played before 4,817 spectators at SAS Stadium, the newly-minted home of the first division women's football club Carolina Courage. On May 11, the US team hosted fellow World Cup finalists Uruguay in a tune-up match at RFK Stadium in Washington, with the Americans running out 2-1 winners off goals from midfielder Tony Sanneh and forward DaMarcus Beasley. Beasley's work on the left side won a corner kick in the 6th minute to set up the first US goal, a header from Sanneh off of Jeff Agoos' kick. Beasley kept grinding, and, in the 40th minute, the 19-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana showed some of his well-known speed, picking off an errant Uruguay pass at midfield. After his first shot was parried by Uruguay keeper Gustavo Munua, Beasley slotted home the rebound to give the US what would end up being the winning goal five minutes from the interval. Uruguay scored its goal in the 60th minute after a flurry of shots peppered US and Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel. Friedel was able to keep out the first two strikes, but could not stop Sebastian Abreu's third attempt. Abreu appeared to have scored his second goal in the 74th minute, but the would-be equalizer was disallowed by an offside ruling. However, the US was dealt a major blow when Chicago Fire midfielder Chris Armas had to leave the game in the first half after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Armas, best known for being a disruptive force against US opponents, has been ruled out of the trip to Korea/Japan, as his injury will require surgery. US coach Bruce Arena has until May 21 to name a replacement for Armas on the squad, and it appears likely that he will use almost all of that time to make a decision. Possible choices include 1998 squad member Brian Maisonneuve, his Columbus Crew teammate Brian West, and D.C. United midfielder Richie Williams. The US team's next match is May 16 against Jamaica at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. Posted by

Stevie stays at home |
It was the news that all English fans had been fearing and, unfortunately, it was confirmed today: Steven Gerrard is out of this summers World Cup in Korea and Japan.
The midfielder, who limped out of Liverpools last league game on Saturday, saw a specialist yesterday for scans on his groin injury and has confirmed that he will require an operation later this week. Gerrard told Liverpools official website: "The rehabilitation period for this sort of operation is six weeks, so obviously Im going to miss the World Cup which is a massive disappointment. However, I need to get myself right as I wouldnt have been able to do myself or the team justice in Japan. In the short term its a big blow, but Im only 21 and confident this surgery means Ill be involved in other major tournaments for the National side in the future. I want to send all the England lads my best wishes for the tournament and let them know Ill be cheering them on from home. My priority now has to be to get myself fit for the start of next season with Liverpool." England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was saddened by the news, telling TheFA.com; "I am obviously very disappointed for Steven and for England. The important thing now is for Steven to have a successful operation on his groin so he is available for Liverpool and England next season. We wish him a speedy recovery." Steven is a wonderful player and, as his friend and team-mate Michael Owen commented yesterday, he would be missed by any team. However, if there is any consolation to be taken from his withdrawal, it is that the decision has been made early enough for England to be able to plan ahead without him. Though his absence remains a genuine blow, it would have been even more unsettling for both the player and the team had Steven been struck down by injury after the World Cup campaign had got underway in earnest. Latest news from Fifa French Touch |
We have some great news from the lads over at Fifa French Touch. WC 2002 Goalkeeper kits Sylvain is working on an incredible patch for World Cup 2002 and will be available this week. With it, each team will have his own goalkeeper kit (like GKPatcher for Fifa2002). But each GK kit can have a crest, like the team kit... The France GK Kit and England GK Kit will be included! (See screen shot below left).
Kits for WC 2002 Stéphane Luquet has made kits for WC 2002 with easy install... France home and away, Denmark home and away and Portugal home are also available in their Downloads/World-Cup 2002 section. (See screen shot above right). FCDB XP Sylvain is always working these days on the great new challenger to FEd 2002, FCDB XP. A fix will be available perhaps this week, with a lot of new features... 8-a-side patch released |
The 8-a-side demo patch has been released over at SoccerAccess. This patch is very different from the usual SoccerAccess patches since this one actually changes the whole gaming rules.
Now, only 8 players will enter the field, and thanks to the comments from their Forums, they will pose for a picture before each match. A nice Pink Floyd song will be played before each match, and the Nike commercial "sound track" has been included in the patch as well. As a result, you'll see the players entering the field as the commentator explains to you how the game works (just like in the TV commercial), then you'll enter a superb stadium called the Infernal Arena (named after the red colours that predominate this stadium) and play with only 8 players instead of 11! Last but not least, the 4GK have been included in the patch as well (4GK for Fifa 2002 coming soon). A must have patch for all the indoor soccer, Soccer Access, Nike, Pink Floyd, soccer in general... fanatics out there! Download it from their Download Zone and remember that they will be adding numerous screenshots about this patch to their latest section, the Soccer Access Image Gallery. Full details as always can be found in the Patches Database. Posted by

FIFA World Cup Music Changer 2002 |
Fifa Tools have just published a new utility, it's the FIFA World Cup Music Changer 2002. The name speaks for itself - this utility changes the music in FIFA World Cup 2002. Changing means deleting existing tracks and adding new ones. With the help of Music Changer you'll be able to import music with the following file formats: So, if you are tired of the orchestra, you must download this great new utility. Also, the Music Changer adds into each STR file (FIFA music format) special tags with the information about the song (the information you tape). This allows to sign every STR, like MP3 files. By the way, when you import MP3s, the information from them is automatically transferred into STR. That's good, isn't it? For those, who are too lazy to add some comments about a song, there is a function of prelistening. You can listen to WAV, MP3 and CDA files. So delete your Winamp now? Note: Music Changer supports a multi language feature. You can change language in the About dialog. All words are contained in LNG files. LNG files are situated in <languages> directory, and you can add your own file. It will appear in language select combo box. If you make a translation to your language, please send it to the guys. Following languages are available in the original install package: - English
- Spanish
- French
- Korean
- Russian
If somebody can translate Music Changer into your own language, it will be greatly appreciated by the guys over at Fifa Tools. Grab your copy now from Fifa Tools, and see all their other great tools whilst you are there. Posted by

This is the 2nd patch now which brings Holland into the game and proves how popular they are. It is still difficult to believe that a team with that much quality could not qualify.
The patch features: - Nike Holland home and away kit
- Correct rosters
- 25 Players with correct attributes, name, position, age, height and weight
- 12 Real Faces
- Star Players included
- Dutch Flags
- Orange Crowds
- Easy-to-use install menu in English
The 2002 FIFA World Cup Holland Patch is only 1.4 Mb, which includes an easy-install menu and all the files needed to travel with Holland to the World Cup. This great patch can be downloaded by visiting the Patches Database. Great work lads over at FIFA Benelux. Posted by
