SFTLA Knockout Cup Update :- Ajax v Cheltenham

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

Finally Ajax and Cheltenham squared off in the cup and what a cracking contest it was, truly knockout football at its best and most likely the tie of the tournament. Ajax drew first blood with Pienaar hammering it low into the corner past the Cheltenham keeper with just 9 minutes gone.

It was a pretty open contest with both sides looking to break quickly and it was Cheltenham who struck next as Ajax threatened a 2nd and Yates beat the keeper from the edge of the area to level it at 1-1. Both sides enjoyed chances which were squandered but then disaster struck for Ajax as a Cheltenham player was brought down in the box and to Ajax's dismay the ref pointed for a penalty!!

Devaney stepped up and cooly slotted it straight down the middle past the diving keeper.

HT 1-2. 2nd half and Ajax came out looking for the equaliser and within minutes Ibrahmimovic broke free and sloteed it past the onrushing keeper 2-2 GAME ON!! End-to-end as both side! s looked for the winner in the last half-an-hour of the game.

Ibrahimovic broke free again but this time was denied by a superb save from the Cheltenham goalie and the tie remained in the balance. Just as it seemed the tie would be deadlocked and golden goal needed to be played Cheltenham had their chance to win it like Ajax had done...

It was left to Brayson to break the hearts of the Ajax players and supporters and he hit it low into the bottom corner of the goal to snatch victory at the death. No time for an equaliser as the referee blew his whistle straight after the kick-off and Cheltenham marched on into a quarter-final showdown with Macclesfield after a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Champions League Winning Manager on Route to Chelsea ?

Porto Manager Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will be leaving Porto and suggested England will be his next destination.

Mourinho masterminded Porto's UEFA Champions League victory over Monaco on Wednesday and promptly announced he will head for pastures new in the summer.

The highly-rated tactician claims he will speak to the Porto board out of respect for the club but suggested a deal with an English team, widely tipped to be Chelsea, had all-but been sealed.

"It is almost for sure my last match at Porto," he told Sky Sports. "It is the best way (to leave) I have been here two-and-a-half years and it was fantastic. We won everything, we created a good group, the club was sleeping a bit but woke up well and had a good development."

It would appear as if Mourinho, who has won European and domestic honours with the club, feels he has outgrown Porto, as he added: "I decided that I would like to go when I felt there was nothing more to win. The challenge in Portugal is no longer big enough for me."

England will in all probability be Mourinho's next destination, as he said: "It is the country I would like to go to. I have contacts with clubs in Italy as well. I stopped everything two weeks ago to concentrate on things. My agent has been handling things and it should be decided soon."

Mourinho is tipped to fill Claudio Ranieri's shoes at Chelsea, although Liverpool and Tottenham are seeking a new manager, but he would not divulge his favoured destination.

"I have to speak to Porto out of respect for them," he added. "But it will soon be very clear. In the next days it will all be clear. I gave a club my word that I wanted to go to them and it will all be clear soon."

Trip Down Memory Lane

Bob Paisley Liverpool Legend

In arguably the greatest night in Liverpool's history, the European Cup was won with a fine victory over a strong German side. The victory in Rome completed the quest that had been started by Bill Shankly thirteen years earlier and made up for the heartbreak of losing the FA Cup final the previous Saturday. Although all the players were undoubted heroes, a special mention has to be reserved for Tommy Smith, who was so elated at the success that he decided to postpone his retirement for one more year.

Liverpool's European adventure began in Iceland in August 1964 and the Reds so nearly reached the final in that first season, going out to Inter Milan in controversial fashion in the semi finals. Shankly's two further attempts at European Cup glory both ended in the 2nd round, but his trusted assistant Bob Paisley learned the lessons of earlier campaigns. Having won the UEFA Cup in 1976, Paisley had every reason to believe that the ultimate success could be achieved in his first crack at the big one in 1977.

Liverpool found themselves chasing a treble that year but although they secured the league title they were cruelly beaten by Manchester United in the FA Cup final some four days before the trip to Rome. Many a side would have cracked but after the heartbreak of losing at Wembley, the Reds players were determined to win in the Eternal City. They had been led to believe that around 8,000 Reds fans would be present, but when they went out onto the pitch before the game and saw that 25,000+ were there, they told themselves they could not possibly lose this game.

Liverpool started with the side that had finished the cup final, meaning Ian Callaghan started instead of David Johnson. Tommy Smith, who had been out of favour for much of the season and was set to leave the club in the summer, retained his place for the game due to an injury to Phil Thompson. An Achilles injury to John Toshack meant that there was a place amongst the substitutes for Alan Waddle, who hadn't scored for the Reds for over three years.

The first chance of the game fell to Bonhof, who hit the post with a low shot, but Liverpool then took control and went ahead on 28 minutes. Ian Callaghan robbed Bonhof and put Heighway through on the right, who found Terry McDermott. The curly haired midfielder then coolly slotted the ball past the keeper to put the Reds in the lead and the score remained that way until half time.

Liverpool came under the cosh for the early part of the second half and it was just six minutes old when Allan Simonsen scored after he latched on to a poor backpass from Case. Ten minutes later, Ray Clemence was forced to make a brilliant diving save at the feet of Stieleke as the German side threatened to overpower the Reds in a machine like way.

This brilliant save from Clemence was Liverpool's wake up call as they then regained their composure and on 64 minutes Tommy Smith stole in unnoticed to head home Heighway's corner. There was no way back for the Germans now and Liverpool were rampant. Victory was secured on 82 minutes when Bertie Vogts brought down Keegan in the area and Phil Neal stepped up to score the resultant penalty.

Liverpool Celebrate

After the match there were huge celebrations back in Liverpool, while many of the fans in Rome sought out the team's hotel and gatecrashed the buffet. Bob Paisley didn't touch a drop of alcohol all night, wishing to be able to remember every single moment of the party. In her silver jubilee year, Queen Elizabeth II sent a telegram of congratulations and there was an OBE for Bob Paisley. Winning goal scorer Tommy Smith received an MBE and decided to stay at Liverpool after all, turning down the chance to manage Wigan Athletic in the process.

Roberto Carlos on way to Chelsea ?

Real Madrid Website

Real Madrid director of sport Jorge Valdano has reportedly claimed that Brazilian full back Roberto Carlos will complete a 20 million move to Chelsea in the coming days. With just one year left to run on his current deal, the 31-year-old is seeking a new four-year contract while Madrid are only prepared to offer him two years.

Reports emanating from South America on Monday claimed Roberto Carlos had admitted he would leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, and now Valdano has been quoted as saying a switch to Chelsea is on the verge of being finalised. "We're waiting for a fax from Chelsea confirming they will pay the 20million fee in order to complete the deal," Valdano told the Spanish press according to The Times.

Real president Florentino Perez also sent out a clear signal that he was growing tired of the confusion surrounding the South American's future by insisting that there was no place in Madrid for players who were not committed to the club.Perez made it clear he would study any offer that arrived from Stamford Bridge - conceding contract talks with Carlos were currently dead. "At the moment the negotiations to renew Roberto Carlos (his contract) are nowhere," stated the Real supremo.

"We have stated on many occasions our desire that he should finish his contract at Real Madrid. "If Chelsea wants any Real Madrid player they should put it in writing, making it an official offer and we will study it. "We don't want doubtful players at Real Madrid, those that stay must be enthusiastic."

Davids Eyes up Premiership !

Barcelona Website

Edgar Davids has rejected the chance to stay with Barcelona after receiving 'a great offer' from an unnamed English club.

It was widely expected that the 31-year-old former Ajax and Milan star would choose to extend his stay with Barca, but agent Robert Geerling confirmed negotiations between the two sides had broken down."The offer did not interest him and no other meeting is planned"

Internazionale were rumoured to be keen on the feisty midfielder, but it now appears England could be his next destination."We have a great offer from England," Geerling added, although he refused to expand on the identity of the club involved.

Unsurprisingly, the Spanish press are suggesting Chelsea could well be the club in question, although with the player available on a free transfer he would be an attractive proposition to a number of sides

Farewell to a Legend

Henrik Larsson Website

Celtic Fans will be in mourning this Summer despite League and Cup Doubles. The reason being, the Legend from Sweden "Henrik Larsson" is on his way to more sunnier climates to continue his career.

The prolific Swede is available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Celtic and his signature is set to be one of the most sought-after in Europe. Larsson has been strongly linked with a switch to Spain, but the former Feyenoord ace insists if he does not get an attractive offer he would have no problem hanging up his boots.

Meanwhile, Celtic boss Martin O'Neill has revealed that the door remains open for Henrik Larsson to stay at Parkhead if he wants to. O'Neill is hoping that Larsson, who has a farewell match with Seville on Tuesday, may make a U-Turn on his decision to leave like he did when he had a change of heart to come out of retirement for Sweden for Euro 2004. O'Neill is still resigned to losing Larsson and is stepping up search for a replacement.

FA Cup 2004 - Manchester United 3 v 0 Millwall

FA Cup 2004 - Manchester United 3 v 0 MillwallCristiano Ronaldo proved his credentials to wear the famed Manchester United number seven shirt with a dazzling FA Cup-winning display in the 3-0 win against an outplayed Millwall side in Cardiff.

Ronaldo's predecessors read like a who's who of United greats, with David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best among them. However, the teenager signed to replace Beckham last summer for the princely sum of £12.24million is proving week by week that he is more than capable of rising to the task.

In a one-sided cup final he not only lit up the game with his array of tricks, but provided the end product in scoring the 43rd-minute header which put United en route to victory.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy also converting a 64th-minute penalty, there was no way back for their First Division opponents and the Dutchman also struck another amid more than a hint of offside.

Player-boss Dennis Wise may have dreamed of recreating his part in Wimbledon's upset of 1988, but this was instead Chelsea's 1994 mauling by United all over again. However hard Millwall ran and battled, United were simply a class apart.

Latest Cup Final Team News

Manchester United
FA Cup 2004Sir Alex Ferguson must decide whether to break the heart of Darren Fletcher or Phil Neville ahead of today's FA Cup final with Millwall.

The return of skipper Roy Keane from a hamstring problem means Ferguson is expected to make one change to the side that defeated Aston Villa last weekend, with Fletcher or Neville most likely to miss out.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder is on course to appear in his sixth cup final - a post-war record - and believes he has well and truly shaken off a hamstring problem which threatened to rule him out.

Ferguson must also decide which three members of his regular 19-man squad will not even get to sit on the bench, with Diego Forlan, David Bellion and possibly Nicky Butt likely to be among the unlucky trio.

Team from: Howard, Carroll, G Neville, P Neville, Brown, Silvestre, O'Shea, Fletcher, Butt, Scholes, Ronaldo, Keane, Djemba-Djemba, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy, Kleberson, Solskjaer, Forlan, Bellion.

Millwall
The Lions remain hopeful that player-manager Dennis Wise will recover from his leg injury in time to face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.

Wise returned from treatment by a specialist masseur in Italy to join his team-mates in Cardiff on Thursday night and a late decision will be taken on his fitness.

The Lions are already without suspended striker Danny Dichio, injured skipper Kevin Muscat (knee ligaments), and midfielder Andy Roberts (knee).

Team (from): Marshall, Gueret, Lawrence, Ryan, Cahill, Dolan, Ifill, Livermore, Harris, Weston, Ward, Sutton, Wise, Braniff, McCammon, Elliott, Sweeney, Dunne.

Barclaycard Premiership Round-Up

Arsenal Crowned as ChampionsArsenal are just one match from a place in the record books after they recorded a 1-0 win at London rivals Fulham. Arsene Wenger's side extended their incredible unbeaten league run since the start of the season to 37 games with a considerable helping hand from goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Newcastle's Champions League hopes were left in tatters as Alan Shearer missed a late penalty to hand relegated Wolves a 1-1 draw. The 33-year-old's 82nd-minute spot-kick was saved by Paul Jones in an agonising and dramatic conclusion to their final home game of the season which left Liverpool on the brink of clinching fourth place.

United head for Southampton on Wednesday night and then Anfield next Saturday knowing only two victories will see them climb back into the top four, and that even fifth place could be beyond them if Aston Villa win at home to Manchester United.

Manchester United and Aston Villa both suffered disappointment in their respective bids to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Ten-man Chelsea secured the second automatic Champions League spot at United's expense after a thrilling 1-1 encounter in the early kick-off at Old Trafford.

Villa's hopes of gaining the upper hand in the race for the fourth Champions League place took a blow at Southampton. Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel had slotted home a 39th-minute penalty but Kevin Phillips popped up with a slick right-footed finish to level matters just before the break.

French striker Youri Djorkaeff kept alive Bolton's faint European hopes with a brace to earn a 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park

Alan Smith capped what could be his last appearance in a Leeds shirt by slotting home his side's third goal in a hugely-entertaining 3-3 draw with over Charlton at Elland Road. The result confirmed Leeds' relegation to the Nationwide First Division.

Tottenham's Jermain Defoe scored the only goal of the game against fellow-strugglers Blackburn at White Hart Lane.

Already-relegated Leicester stunned in-form Portsmouth with a 3-1 win at the Walkers Stadium.

Middlesbrough dominated matters against Manchester City and earned a deserved 2-1 victory at the Riverside.

Changing of the Guard

After more than seven years, today is my great friend Matt Holme's (see bottom left photo, Matt is wearing the white t-shirt) last day as Webmaster of Soccer Gaming. Although an emotional day for himself, by no means is this bad news. It is actually the beginning of some very exciting times for not only Soccer Gaming, but also for Matt as well.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

On a personal note, he is extremely excited as he will very shortly be packing his bags to make the big move from his homeland, Australia, over to Canada. He has recently accepted a position with EA to be an Assistant Producer for FIFA!

Due to his new job, he will be stepping down from his position at Soccer Gaming. Lior Fengas, who many of you will already know, will be taking over. Matt could not be happier with someone as wise and skilful as Lior taking over as Webmaster of Soccer Gaming.

Matt has posted a nice article over at Soccer Gaming where yours truly also gets a nice mention. Check it out by clicking here.

Best finish in 49 years

Visit Chelsea mini siteRoman Abramovich’s first season as owner has brought Chelsea's best finish in 49 years, our second best in our 99 year history. Claiming second place has been described by head coach Claudio Ranieri as: “The greatest achievement of my career.”

Talking in the tunnel at old Trafford on Saturday, Claudio dismissed his Italian and Spanish Cup wins, and explained: “In Spain with Valencia I finish fourth, in Italy with Fiorentina I finish third, and now in the Premiership I finish second. Who knows what next!

Chelsea’s best finishes in our history now stand as follows:

  • 1955 1st.
  • 2004 2nd.
  • 1920 3rd.
  • 1965 3rd.
  • 1970 3rd.
  • 1999 3rd.
  • 1998 4th.
  • 2003 4th.

The point we gained at Old Trafford gave us one more than our record for the top flight, achieved in 1999 with 75. We now have 76.

But we have no silverware this season. “That is a pity,” admitted Claudio. “But you have to remember we went out of the FA Cup to Arsenal, we reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, and the only one where I was not happy with our performance was at Aston Villa (in the Carling Cup). But I always say, the Cups are a gamble. The League tells the truth.

And he joked: “Anyway, we have some silverware from Malaysia.” Chelsea, of course, won the FA Premier League Asia Cup pre-season.

Such is the finality of the season now that the team has been given the first half of the week off and will start preparing for the visit of Leeds only on Thursday.

Chelsea 2 Monaco 2 (3 - 5 on aggregate)

Visit Chelsea mini siteWhat a game, what drama, what bitter, bitter disappointment!

Having wrestled Monaco’s strong hold on a place in the Champions League Final away from them with a strident first-half display that oozed controlled determination and confidence, Chelsea somehow let the tie fall back into the hands of Didier Deschamps’ men. In the end they were able to coast through the closing stages of the match and on to meet Porto in Gelsenkirchen.

We can point to some misfortune to explain the loss. After Jesper Gronkjaer’s spectacular strike early on, Frank Lampard went a long way to making it the opening half of our dreams when he put his team ahead in the tie just before half-time.

But then a hotly-disputed goal with a strong hint of handball just seconds before the break steadied the rocking Monaco yacht. They now had reason to believe again and when the classy Fernando Morientes brought the scores level on the hour, Chelsea need three more goals and the games was all but up.

The evening ended totally flat. Had it kept the up the blistering blur of action seen in the preceding 60 minutes then it would surely have gone down as one of the great European ties of all-time, whatever the eventual result. The Champions League adventure was over having come further than we had ever come before.

Monaco had shown much for the neutral to admire but three young Englishmen, Terry, Lampard and Bridge didn't deserve to go out this way. They had been superb on the night.

But forget individuals, the face of every Chelsea player at the end said it all.

SFTLA Premiership Report :- Ajax v Real Madrid

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC LeagueAll one-way traffic from the off as Ajax tore "Los Galaticos" to shreds and if it wasn't for some superb goalkeeping from Man of the Match Cassilas then this match could well of been a cricket score.

Ajax Star Sonk scored two in the first half with a 25 yarder from Pienaar sandwiched in between as Ajax led 3-0 at half time. Strong words were needed by the Madrid Manager towards his Team during the interval if they were to stand any chance of a comeback in this match.

Both Teams returned to the pitch and kicked off the Second Half. Immediately it became quite evident that the Madrid players had taken on board the strong words by their Manager at Half Time as they looked a completely different outfit, but as so often in this 'funny ol game' despite most of the possession Ajax stretched their lead with Ibrahimovic scoring a fluke from a corner, after everyone had missed the ball, the Swede stuck his foot out and it bounced past the keeper into the net to make it 4-0.

Then just minutes later it was 5-0 as Sonk grabbed his hat-trick and if there was any doubt this sealed the 3 points and the win. Figo grabbed two late consolation goals as the Ajax defence went to sleep which did not please the Ajax boss one bit as he wanted to keep a clean sheet to add to the score-line but all in all it was an impressive display by the Dutch outfit and keeps their hopes of finishing in the top 3 very much a reality.

Ranieri keen to make amends in Europe

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri has promised he will not get it wrong again when Chelsea take on Monaco in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, second leg.

The Blues must overturn a 3-1 deficit after Ranieri admitted he got his substitutions wrong and cost his team a potential victory against 10 men in the first leg.

"In the first leg I wanted to win because I know that Monaco are very dangerous away," said the Chelsea boss. "I said I made a mistake, and now it is important I don't make a mistake."

Ranieri has to make some important decisions when naming his team to face the French side at Stamford Bridge. With Claude Makelele suspended and Scott Parker nursing an injury which may yet rule him out, Ranieri played Geremi in the centre of midfield alongside Frank Lampard in Saturday's 4-0 win over Southampton, in a bid to see how the combination would work if needed on Wednesday.

Perhaps Ranieri's biggest worry is over the fitness of William Gallas, whose pace will be needed against the Monaco attack. He was again missing at the weekend, and with Marcel Desailly suspended it was left to Robert Huth to partner John Terry in the heart of the defence, so the return of Gallas would be a big plus.

Already ruled out through injury are Adrian Mutu and Damien Duff, so Ranieri must choose two strikers from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Hernan Crespo, who scored Chelsea's goal in the first leg.

Although Juan Sebastian Veron came off the bench on Saturday, he is not fully fit and was booed by his own fans, so Joe Cole could be set to start, with Ranieri suggesting he is a potential match winner.

"Joe is a young, talented player and I believe in his qualities," said Ranieri. "However, he has been too anxious to show me how good he is. Every time he wanted to show me, but that is wrong. I think he is a great player but he just has to stay calm. I am happy with what he can do and if he stays calm he can be a match winner. He has a great future, but he has to stay calm - the other players have to take the big responsibility, not him, he is young."

One major bonus for Chelsea was the return of goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini following an 11-match absence with a hand injury. He kept a clean sheet as Chelsea tightened their grip on second place in the Premiership behind Champions Arsenal.

SFTLA UEFA Euro 2004 PS2 Tournament in Cornwall

PS2 UEFA Euro 2004 in CornwallFriday night saw the first ever SFTLA Outside Broadcast Tournament, here in Polzeath in sunny Cornwall at the Carters Pub and Restaurant.

Screenshots The lads The winner

It was a great evening as we tested the technology (PS2, projector and PA) and the administrative systems for future tournaments. As we had only arranged this on Monday numbers were always going to be low but that was not the point of this pilot.

It was a great success as SFTLA members Dan and Winty both turned up to represent us and they were joined by 6 other locals.

We spilt the 8 players into to groups of 4 and then the top 2 went into the semi finals with the eventual winner being hot favourite (after warm up matches at the start) young Mike Hewett from Trelights, Cornwall.

Mike walked away with the following prizes for being the first ever winner of an SFTLA Outside Broadcast Tournament and possibly the first winner in the world of a UEFA Euro 2004 tournament:

  • a copy of the PS2 Demo for UEFA Euro 2004;
  • a rare FIFA 2004 t-shirt;
  • a Guinness Aussie hat; and
  • a Budweiser t-shirt

We will soon bring you a full gallery of photos from the night (+ video footage) and the all the results and tables.

It was a great success and hopefully the first of many. We also raised £10 from the entry fees for the Mount Edgecombe Cancer Hospice.

Chelsea 4 Southampton 0

Visit Chelsea mini siteThis time Chelsea did follow the script correctly. After two successive home games of frustration when a 0-0 draw was the best we could achieve, a third side arriving with a draw in their sights were ruthlessly dispatched in the latter stages of the game once the initial breakthrough had been made.

Admittedly gaining that foothold did prove a struggle and it took a big helping head from a Southampton rookie to give a 1-0 lead, but then Frank Lampard twice and Glen Johnson on his return found the net in the final 15 minutes and the wheels were turning smoothly once more ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League date with destiny.

Anything less than a win today would have left the season limping on unconvincingly. Instead we have worked up a head of steam ahead of Monaco and second place in the Premiership is now ours to lose.
