Manchester City's problems

The new Manchester City goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, could miss the start of the new season after suffering an injury during a friendly match against Preston.

Manchester City

Schmeichel was substituted after only 20 minutes of the 3-1 win over North End with a suspected cartilage problem.

"It doesn't look good.”, said City’s manager, Kevin Keegan, “He could miss the start of the new season, but we will have to wait and see.".

Manchester City have already got enough problems, without goalkeeper Nicky Weaver and strikers Shaun Goater and Wanchope due to injuries.

City’s new signing Marc-Vivien Foe, who misses the first four games of the season through suspension, was also out with an eye infection to leave Keegan with a minor crisis ahead of the new Premiership season.

But the manager is hoping that at least Weaver will return in time for the new campaign, which kicks off on 17 August.

"He'll be fit for the start of the season if he continues to make the progress he's making now, He has just had his knee cleaned out again.", said Keegan.

The Third Coming

Eidur Gudjohnsen has no intention of quitting Chelsea, according to his agent, Peter Harrison. This comes after Harrison openly expressed his disappointment at the new terms offered to the Icelandic striker.

Ivan camps out in Madrid
Bolton Wanderers' soaring wage bill won't be burdened by Real Madrid's Ivan Campo. The club's efforts to sign central defender are dead in the water, according to the player's agent.

Hod's not keen on Robbie
We stand corrected. Glenn Hoddle is not interested in Robbie Keane. So why did the Spurs' Director of Football, David Pleat, say they were 'monitoring the situation'? Confused?

What a card
Leicester City's suspended midfielder Dennis Wise has been asked to attend an internal inquiry later today to explain his side of the incident which left team-mate Callum Davidson with a double fracture of the cheekbone.

Wolves on the hunt for Howarth
Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a second bid to sign England under-21 keeper, Russell Howarth, from York City. The York-born favourite is out of contract but is too young to leave on a Bosman and the fee could be settled by tribunal.

FIFA 2003 revealed

Over at Special Reserve they have some of the first released images of Fifa 2003!

With the World Cup seemingly a distant memory, now we can begin to look forward to the domestic season again. In a few weeks time our attentions will shift to Arsenal's defence of the Premiership. And what better way to hype up the beginning of the 2002-03 season with some exclusive screenshots of FIFA 2003 from EA Sports?

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

The shots here show off the silky new graphics, and the detail on the character models is quite phenomenal - a few FIFA's ago, you wouldn't be able to tell who a player was by looking at the back of his head, but it's clear the fella in the shot is Rudy Van, the United man. Check out the Rusedski-like chin jutting out to the Old Trafford faithful. It has to be said, the crowds look a lot better too.

FIFA 2003 is due to be released on all major formats at the end of October. Pre-order your copy here very soon.

Rivaldo seeks a home

After Barcelona have officialy released Brazilian striker, Rivaldo, the rumors about where he's heading next just grow and grow.

Rivaldo

Couple of hours after the Barca's statemeant, Rivaldo interviewd on Brazilian television, and called his national team-mate, Roberto Carlos, to "check out his transfer to Real Madrid", which only started a bigger rumors wave about Rivaldo's transfer to Barca's big rival.

Real Madrid have played down rumours that they are about to swoop for Rivaldo following his shock departure from Barcelona, And Real director Maria Coronas has also played down the reports, although there has been no official club statement.

"Rivaldo will not be going to Real Madrid, although that's just my personal opinion as a director. Rivaldo is going because it's in the best interests of the club. The club president Joan Gaspart and the player will give all the details at a future news conference.", Coronas said.

Newcastle boss Bobby Robson is a confirmed admirer of the Brazilian and although he has said his summer spending is over, could well make a move now the midfielder is available for nothing.

Rivaldo have confirmed he knows about the intrest of Lazio, Manchester United and Athletico Madrid. Barcelona are sure that he will not move to Madrid.

Maldini's Decision

Paolo Maldini has confirmed his decision to retire from international football.

The former Italy captain said he had resisted pleas from Azzurri coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, and his team-mates to call it a day after the World Cup.

Paolo Maldini

Maldini have made a record of 126 appearances for his country but turned down the chance to play on for another year, allowing Trappatoni to find a new lef-back for the first time since the late 1980's.

"I have thought a lot about the national side and my decision has not changed. Trapattoni and my team mates from the World Cup squad have tried to change my mind but the fundamental thing is that someone who is 34 years of age cannot think about playing in the European championship in 2004.", Maldini said.

As for the role as a team captain, Lazio's defender, Alessandro Nesta, is the favourite to take over from Maldini as Italy captain.

Weird but true

There's some weird stories behind the scenes of the football scene, sometimes too weird to belive.

Weird Stories

According to the UEFA Official site David Beckham has decided not to make his acting debut as an assassin who can miraculously bend bullets round corners.

The Manchester United and England midfield player was offered a part alongside former Spandau Ballet star, Martin Kemp (all you youngsters probebly don't know who is it), in British gangster film 'Red Light Runners' but despite reports in the British press, he has chosen to turn down the role.

Beckham, more famous worldwide as a nice, softly-spoken boy who is good with children, is would have been a strange choice to play a big screen tough guy.

"The character is an assassin with a damaged eye, He compensates with his other senses and has the ability to control his bullets and direct or bend them to his target. The character is given a lot of build-up with the other cast members talking about him a lot so when he appears the impact will be huge.", explained producer Clark Westerman.

Stay tuned for news of Oliver Kahn's non-appearance in a remake of 'Bambi' and Raתl Gonzalez's decision not to pursue a new career in musical theatre in future editions of Off The Ball. (-:

In another out-of-this-world story, two members of the Iran national team were left nursing their wounds after receiving dozens of lashes (!!) for 'moral corruption'.

two unnamed players were sentenced to a judicial punishment after videotapes and photographs found in an illegal brothel in Tehran implicated them in a major prostitution scandal.

One player received 70 lashes while the other had to endure 170 lashes under sentences imposed by the strict Islamic Sharia law system, while six other players were given cash fines.

Prostitution is illegal in Iran, and the players claimed to have been ensnared in the vice ring after being invited to a party after the national side's elimination from the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals in France. The players have subsequently repented their sins and promised to lead an honourable life from now on.

As we said: Too weird to be true... but it is.

Real Madrid's cuts

Jorge Valdano, Real Madrid's president, has said the club are aiming to trim the first team Bernabeu squad by seven players.

Real Madrid Cuts

"At the moment we've got 32 players in the squad and we can only register 25,", said Valdano, "That means that if we can't find exits for seven players they'll be left unable to play. It's not a nice situation because it's difficult for players to leave. Everyone wants to make a contribution."

Part of the problem has arisen with Javier Portillo, Raul Bravo and Oscar Minambres being promoted from Real Madrid's reserve team, plus Esteban Cambiasso and Fernando have also been recalled from loan spells.

Newspapers reports in Spain suggest that Flavio Conceicao, Geremi, Albert Celades, Edwin Congo, Ivan Campo, Savio Bortolini and Pedro Munitis could be surplus to requirements.

Jorge Valdano also added: "Signing players is not the priority, although we are looking at the market."

Cuts Cuts Cuts

Christian Vieri, Ronaldo and Alvaro Recoba have taken voluntary pay cuts to help cash-strapped Inter Milan. The trio have all agreed to cuts of up to 10% in their salaries.

Inter Milan cuts

A combination of sky-high wages and shrinking revenue from television rights have put Italian clubs' budgets into a deep shade of red. The problems suffered by Italian clubs is reflected in the summer transfer market.

The Italian clubs are traditionally among football's big-hitters, but most of the business done so far has involved swap deals between clubs.

Italian international Vieri made his voluntary pay cut public through Inter's website, adding that Recoba and Ronaldo had both agreed to follow suit.

"We contacted each other by phone and we decided to do something," , Vieri said, "It is a gesture to make our president Massimo Moratti understand that we care about Inter."

"We know what it means to do everything possible so that Inter can become stronger and bigger each year. The president has supported us in every moment and we wanted to make a concrete gesture as Inter players. "

"It doesn't count how much, we won't bring accountants into it. What is important is to take the initiative." ,Vieri added.

Juan Roman Riquelme

Barca's manager, Louis van Gaal, has continued his summer spending spree at Barcelona by signing Argentinian Juan Roman Riquelme.

Juan Roman Riquelme

Barcelona will pay Boca Juniors 3.8million for half the player's contract, with another 3.2m due over the next two seasons to buy him outright.

Club president Joan Gaspart explained the deal, saying: "We're talking about an exceptional player. We had to make sure he didn't escape."

However, Gaspart revealed the 24-year-old could be sent out on loan in his first season, as Barcelona already have four non-European Union players, the maximum allowed under Spanish Football Federation rules.

Right now it seems that Italian Serie A team, Udinese, will sign Riquelme, but nothing is closed yet.

Van Gaal must either farm the player out for the season or let one of the four players - Brazilians Rivaldo, Geovanni and Fabio Rochemback and Argentina's Javier Saviola - leave the Nou Camp.

Manchester City pre-season

Manchester City chairman, David Bernstein, believes the club's early dealings in the transfer market will pay off when the new season begins.

Manchester City

Bernstein told the club's official website: "I don't like to compare the situation with that of two years ago, but it was certainly always Kevin's strategy to get players in early. He did not want to be caught in a late rush.

"It was a brave thing to do. We are very conscious of the state of the transfer market and some people might think we have been over aggressive. We don't think so, we believe we have paid the right money for quality players.

"Getting them in early means that when pre-season starts at the end of this week Kevin has the maximum time to work with the players.”

So far City have bought 7 new players: Nicolas Anelka (Paris St Germain), Peter Schmeichel (Aston Villa), Sylvain Distin (Paris St Germain), Marc-Vivien Foe (Lyon), Vicente Matias Vuoso (Independiente), Mikkel Bischoff (AB Copenhagen) and Tyrone Loran (Volendam).

Sweetpatch goes on holiday

We are taking a well deserved break for the family. Apologies in advance if the site is a bit quiet over the next week and a half as we are taking Sweetpatch (i.e. baby Zoe) and the rest of the family away on a secret holiday and we will return on 16th July.

The lads will do their best to keep the site updated but are all extremely busy at the moment.

See you all on our return.
