FIFA 2005 - the best football game ever?

FIFA 2005 Hands-On at GamePlanetJust as it becomes apparent that Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer will once again have no online support when PES4 releases this Spring, an even more amazing scenario is brewing over at Electronic Arts.

"FIFA 2005 is the best football game we've ever played. That's right, the series that has the most licenses now has more gameplay to boot, and while we don't doubt Konami will once again emerge with another groundbreaking title this year, it's going to take some doing to beat what EA has been up to."

That is the amazing news from GamePlanet following their recent preview of FIFA 2005. Check out the full story by clicking here.

ChampionsWorld Series 2004 - Chelsea 3 Roma 0

Visit Chelsea mini siteAnother impressive team performance with goals from Joe Cole, Mateja Kezman and substitute Didier Drogba wasn't even overshadowed by Kezman’s sending off.

Cole had been looking sharp for the first ten minutes, taking one wicked corner from the left, when he received a wonderful flick from Eidur Gudjohnsen. He played a one-two with Gérémi who supplied a perfect chip behind the central defence, and the fleet-footed Cole got through them to tuck the ball under the advancing goalkeeper Carlo Zotti.

A minute past the hour Roma sent on Corvia for Delvecchio and suddenly the action really kicked in. First Kezman broke through one on one but Zotti saved his shot. Then, within a minute, the Serb finally scored. Frank Lampard’s pass defeated Giuseppe Scurto, Robben got almost to the by-line and pulled back what is already a trademark low ball for Kezman to fire left-footed through the goalkeeper. Two-nil.

Three minutes later Dacourt disgracefully dragged his studs down Robben’s calf as the winger, momentarily on the right, burst forward. Kezman pushed the Roma midfielder, Robben got up and did the same. The referee sent off Dacourt and Kezman. Furious John Terry remonstrated with the official but to no end.

Chelsea switched to 4-4-1, Roma to 4-3-2, and Drogba scored his first Chelsea goal three minutes later. Lampard’s strong 25 metres shot bounced off careless Zotti and Drogba pounced. Three-nil.

Roma had just two shots on target all game. The sendings off do not lead to suspensions in the series. The pass, pass, pass, goodbye style of play was again triumphant. Check out the full report at the Official Chelsea Website.

Copa glory for Brazil

Copa glory for Brazil Brazil denied Argentina a record 15th Copa America title when clinching a penalty shoot-out win in Peru, after the encounter had finished 2-2 at the end of normal time.

Carlos Alberto Parreira's side were arguably lucky to reach the shoot-out as they needed an injury time goal from Adriano to force penalties, but they were more clinical in the shoot out - winning 4-2.

Brazil netted goals deep in stoppage time at the end of each half to force the shoot out.

Luisao headed home in the first half injury time to cancel out Kily Gonzalez's opener for Argentina, while Adriano showed great skill to smash into the corner and take it to penalties after Cesar Delgado thought he had won it for Argentina.

ChampionsWorld Series 2004 - Chelsea 4 Celtic 2

Visit Chelsea mini siteAn outstanding Alexei Smertin goal and two second-half Mateja Kezman strikes lit up Chelsea’s impressive victory over the Scottish champions in Seattle.

The general temperature in Seattle was 88 degrees at kick-off and Chelsea played a 4-3-1-2 formation rather than a diamond with Gérémi on the right looking strong in his natural position, Smertin in the middle and Scott Parker on the left.

Smertin, who shone at Oxford in the first friendly, put Chelsea ahead with a spectacular goal. He ran 30 metres with the ball, played it square to his right, got it back, ran square to his left across Joos Valgaeren and blasted a 25 metres left-footer past Hedman into the top corner.

He didn't score at Oxford, he didn't score in his year at Portsmouth, he hasn't scored in 42 internationals for Russia, but he’s looking the find of the summer.

It made it an extremely impressive afternoon for Mourinho’s side. Check out the full report at the Official Chelsea Website.

FIFA 2005 Hands-On at IGN

FIFA 2005 Hands-On at IGNAaron Boulding at IGN has been lucky enough to get his hands on a development version of FIFA 2005.

It's taken some time, but in his opinion EA's powerful FIFA franchise is finally focusing on the fundamentals of football with the upcoming FIFA Soccer 2005. In addition to an unprecedented number of players, leagues and national teams (12,000;20; 40, respectively), the introduction of first touch control should appeal to the soccer purists out there who've been waiting for even more realism out of the series. There have been improvements to the rich Dynasty mode and the experiment with Off the Ball control continues in the version, but without a doubt the new first touch system, along with improved animations, is the biggest evolution.

The animation and physics of the game are greatly improved. There's no better indication of this than the intelligence and ability of players near the sidelines. After years of throwing controllers and cursing at top volume when a player would kick the hell out of a ball near the sidelines after we'd tapped the speed burst button with lightning fingers to get him there, there's finally a unique sideline play system to make us happy. You can freely sprint your players near the sidelines to get to a ball and they'll automatically slide or lunge to make a play on it while keeping it bounds.

Overall FIFA 2005 seems to be a marked improvement over its predecessor. There's still more to be seen from the new Off the Ball control system and the depths of the Dynasty mode haven't been explored yet either.

Check out Aaron's full preview by clicking here. We'll have plenty more on FIFA 2005 in the weeks and months to come.

Mourinho sets Drogba and Tiago deadline

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said the English Premiership runners-up must sign Didier Drogba and Tiago Mendes by Wednesday otherwise the duo will not be coming to Stamford Bridge.

On July 21 the London club depart for their pre-season tour of the United States and Mourinho wants his squad confirmed ahead of a trip featuring games against Celtic, Roma and AC Milan.

Marseille want 25 million pounds for Ivory Coast forward Drogba but Mourinho has insisted Chelsea will not be held to ransom despite Russian owner Roman Abramovich's huge fortune.

However, Chelsea's Portuguese boss does appear closer to bringing compatriot Tiago to Stamford Bridge from Benfica.

Mourinho, who has already signed Mateja Kezman and Paulo Ferreira, said on Friday: "I can't speak about Tiago and Drogba because at the moment they are not Chelsea players. Any new players we want will have to arrive before we go to the United States. I want to go there and begin preparations for the season with my full squad."

"I will have worked hard to build the squad before we go and it's important I have it in place. I want the same group of players until the end of the season. Wednesday is the cut-off date for any new signings."

FIFA 2005 Hands-On at GameSpot

FIFA 2005 newsEarlier this week at Electronic Arts' annual summertime press event, GameSpot managed to get their hands-on time with the latest playable PS2 and Xbox builds of FIFA 2005. Currently being developed by the same team responsible for FIFA 2004 (which the recent UEFA Euro 2004 was not), the game has come an awfully long way since they played it at E3.

Danny Isaac gives us some new insight on some of the gameplay features in FIFA 2005. After finishing FIFA 2004 and then comparing it to real soccer, the development team felt that the biggest flaw in the game was that players took too long to control the ball when it came to them. The problem was that the movement of the ball was determining where the player went, rather than vice versa. To address this concern, the team has devised a "First Touch Control" system that basically allows you to move the ball in any direction you like the instant it arrives at your player's feet.

Find out more about how First Touch Control is achieved and the brand new Career Mode by visiting GameSpot.

We look forward to bringing you more information on the game in the not too distant future.

Crespo on verge of signing for AC Milan

Visit Chelsea mini siteArgentinian international striker Hernan Crespo is on the point of signing on loan for Italian champions AC Milan from Chelsea it was revealed.

The 29-year-old's departure would open the way for Chelsea to up their bid for Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba from UEFA Cup finalists Marseille having already had a 28million euro offer for the 26-year-old turned down.

According to ANSA news agency AC Milan have not finalised the deal with Crespo yet but there remains only a few outstanding points to be sorted out before he joins the bitter rivals of his former club Inter Milan.

Should Crespo - a member of the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals squads - complete his transfer he will compete for a place up front with Ukrainian Andrei Shevchenko and Italian international Filippo Inzaghi.

Crespo began his career at River Plate before moving to Parma where he had a successful time - scoring 62 times in 116 appearances - and landed the 1999 UEFA Cup in which he scored in the 3-0 defeat of Marseille before leaving for 35million pounds to Lazio and then onto Inter where he stayed just one season before joining Chelsea.

Kezman on a mission for goals

Visit Chelsea mini siteSerbia and Montenegro striker Mateja Kezman insists he is born to score for Chelsea. Kezman, who will join the Blues from Dutch league runners-up PSV Eindhoven once his work permit application is processed, blasted 105 goals for PSV in 122 matches since his move from Partizan Belgrade four years ago. And he has scored twice in five outings for his country.

"Scoring goals is the only mission in my life. I cannot get enough of them," Kezman told the Daily Express today.

"Defenders and midfield players can be formed, but as a goalscorer you are born. I know that the defenders in England will be better than in Holland but the quality of my team-mates will be better too, and that is the most important thing."

Kezman is determined to become one of Europe's top forwards but accepts it may not happen immediately.

"I am not in a hurry," he added. "I am only 25 and will take my time. The best strikers in the world are all two or three years older than me."

Vive o 2004! - Greece kings of Europe

Euro 2004 Final - Portugal 0 v 1 GreeceGreece pulled off arguably the biggest shock at a major football championship as a goal by Angelos Charisteas gave them victory at UEFA EURO 2004™. Having begun the tournament as 80-1 outsiders, the achievement of Otto Rehhagel's team of European journeymen is hard to put into perspective, but once again the belief they have shown in themselves throughout this amazing adventure was too strong for their opponents.

Portugal thus became the first host nation to lose a UEFA European Championship final and they will have to wait at least another two years to claim their first senior title. For the likes of Luís Figo and Rui Costa it was an agonising end to glittering international careers, but the Portuguese players can still look back with pride on the joy they have provided for their supporters over the past three weeks.

Final result: Portugal 0 v 1 Greece

Check out the full match report by clicking here and see the goals from the game in fantastic virtual reality by using the BBC's Virtual Replay system.

And that is it, UEFA EURO 2004™ has come and gone and now it is back to normal life again. We really hope you have enjoyed our coverage of the tournament and would appreciate your comments on how you have found the site over the course of the finals by clicking here.

Vive o 2004 Celebration Day - Stage set for Europe's best

Today we celebrate what has been an excellent UEFA EURO 2004™ where having the best players has not been the recipe to success, but where a well organised team has shone through. This has been echoed especially by Czech Republic and today's finalists, Greece.

All the news we have today celebrates the final of this very successful tournament.

The final of UEFA EURO 2004™ may be missing some of Europe's finest players, but the two best teams of the tournament, and the two best coaches, will go head to head at the Estádio da Luz on Sunday to decide who will wear the crown of European champions for the next four years.

It has been a tournament of surprises, of wonderful goals, the odd controversy and glorious celebration: courtesy of the Portuguese and the Greeks, the partying has spread far beyond the continent's boundaries. The only pity is that supporters of these two fanatical footballing nations will not be able to celebrate together after the final as someone has to lose, penalties or not.

To celebrate the final we have the kits of the 2 teams for you to add to your game to enhance the excitement and realism of your copy of UEFA Euro 2004™.

Farewell to players

Visit Chelsea mini siteWith June having turned to July, the date has passed when football contracts traditionally expire which means three senior players have ceased to become Chelsea employees and are now free agents. We therefore say goodbye to Mario Melchiot, Emmanuel Petit and Winston Bogarde.

Chelsea has also come to an agreement with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to release him from the final year of his contract. We would like to thank Jimmy for his excellent service and contribution to Chelsea and we wish him all the best for the future.

Jimmy, who was 32 in March, has spent four seasons at Stamford Bridge where his single-minded marksmanship and trademark cannonball shooting have seen him club top scorer in three of those years

In total he made 177 appearances, 21 as substitute and scored 87 goals, 12 from the penalty spot. He is our tenth highest scorer of all-time.

Chelsea agree fee for Kezman from PSV

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea are delighted to announce that we have agreed a transfer fee with PSV Eindhoven for Mateja Kezman.

The Serbian international centre-forward will travel to London next week to finalise personal terms, have a medical and apply for a work permit.

Kezman, 25, has one of the best scoring records in European football and scored 28 goals in the Dutch League last season taking his total to 95 in just four seasons. In the 2002-03 season he scored 35 goals in 33 games for PSV, the highest total in Holland since Marco van Basten's 37 for Ajax in 1987.

Several clubs in England and Europe had been chasing the striker who played in Euro 2000 for Serbia and Montenegro and in all of PSV's 18 Champions League games in the past three seasons.

Chief executive Peter Kenyon said: "We are delighted to have agreed terms with PSV for Mateja. He is one of the top strikers in Europe and will be an excellent addition to our squad and team."

His previous clubs include FK Zemun, FK Radnicki Pirot, FK Sartid 1913, Smederovo, FK Loznica and FK Partizan Belgrade, all in the former Yugoslavia where he was the top scorer with 28 goals in 1999-2000.

Vive o 2004! - Dellas delight stuns Czechs

Euro 2004 - Greece 1 v 0 Czech Republic (Silver Goal)Greece will play Portugal in the final of UEFA EURO 2004™ after Traianos Dellas' header in added time at the end of the first half of silver goal extra time knocked out the Czech Republic.

The goal that settled a dramatic and entertaining second semi-final in Porto eventually arrived in the 106th minute as Vassilios Tsiartis swung over a corner, and Dellas nipped in to steer in a header at the near post and send the Greeks and their fans into ecstasy, and a totally unexpected final appearance.

Final result: Greece 1 v 0 Czech Republic (Silver Goal)

Vive o 2004! - Czechs wise to Greek surprise

After arriving in Portugal without a win at a major championship, Greece are one game away from the UEFA EURO 2004™ showpiece, although they must first overcome the competition's form team, the Czech Republic, on Thursday night.

The Czechs come to the Estádio do Dragão in Porto with the supreme confidence that four straight wins brings. Squad morale is also high thanks to coach Karel Brückner's man-management skills. All but one player - third-choice goalkeeper Antonín Kinský - has been given a run-out at the finals. However, Greece will also feel positive, especially as they return to the stadium where they silenced hosts Portugal on the opening day.

To celebrate this semi final we have the kits of the 2 teams for you to add to your game to enhance the excitement and realism of your copy of UEFA Euro 2004™.

Vive o 2004! - Maniche has final say

Euro 2004 - Portugal 2 v 1 NetherlandsPortugal became the first host nation since France in 1984 to qualify for the final of the UEFA European Championship after a headed goal by Ronaldo and a stunning strike from Maniche saw off the challenge of the Netherlands despite Jorge Andrade's own goal.

Just as their opponents did 16 years ago, Portugal's feat was achieved after losing their opening match, but since that defeat by Greece Luiz Felipe Scolari's men have grown in stature and tonight, led by Luís Figo, inspired by Deco and anchored by a resolute defence they were worthy winners.

Final result: Portugal 2 v 1 Netherlands
