Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewFollowing the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action:

  • Arsene Wenger is determined to keep his Arsenal side focused as they continued to extend their unbeaten league run with a 4-1 victory at Norwich City.
  • In Sunday's game Bolton Wanderers continued their impressive start to the season by beating Liverpool 1-0.
  • Everton fans have a new local hero even if Wayne Rooney leaves before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. Leon Osman a 23-year-old from Skelmesdale is different to Rooney and relies on determination and hard work rather than natural talent. He scored both goals against West Bromwich Albion - two very different headers - and gave distressed Goodison fans something to cling on to.
  • Nicolas Anelka was outstanding in Manchester City's 4-0 victory against Charlton Athletic, scoring twice to raise his already considerable profile.
  • Aston Villa inflicted a 4-2 defeat on Newcastle United and extended their poor run to just one win in 11 Premiership attempts.
  • Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness retained his composure after seeing his side denied a potential first Barclays Premiership victory of the season in the dying seconds 1-1 against Manchester United.
  • Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren was a satisfied man after seeing his side come from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1.
  • Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce labelled Jermain Defoe the equal of any striker in the Barclays Premiership after his side were beaten 1-0 by a stunning goal from the Tottenham Hotspur star.

Chelsea 2 Southampton 1

Chelsea 2 Southampton 1Chelsea came to Stamford Bridge looking to make it four straight wins at the start of a top flight season for the first time in our history. This major feat was achieved after an early set-back thanks to a Southampton own-goal and a Chelsea penalty.

We also faced Southampton hoping for four consecutive clean-sheets for the first time in the top division at a season’s start. However this ambition did not last nearly so long! In fact it was shattered as early as the unlucky 13th second!

Joe Cole received the ball a couple of passes after kick-off and with a grave error of judgement, attempted to lay it back to his defence. Instead he found James Beattie. The Saints’ captain tried his luck from 30 yards and as he has done from distance before against Chelsea, he hit the net – the ball arcing over Cech’s despairing stretch.

On 33 minutes Chelsea won a corner, Lampard drove it across low, Gudjohnsen back-heeled goalwards and Beattie made it an irregular double. His touch diverted the ball past a man on the line and into his own net.

The chances kept flowing - Tiago heading a corner with a thump which Svensson cleared off the line and then Lampard, Chelsea’s new-found wizard from the corner flag, sent over another crucial kick for Chelsea’s second. Lundekvam raised an arm, handled and Chelsea had a penalty. Lampard himself took the kick, slipped a little in Beckham-style, but still placed it high into the net.

So it was another narrow winning margin and the visitors gave a generous helping hand with both Chelsea goals. But this was anything but a sterile attacking display.

Chelsea’s all-time 100 per cent record at the start of a season runs to six games, achieved in Division Two 76 years ago. Anyone care to bet it can’t be matched or bettered by this season’s team?

Kickin’ It With FIFA 2005’s Dean Richards

Buy Fifa 2005Coming this October with all the EA Sports extras you know and love and a whole lot more, FIFA 2005 looks to be the prettiest soccer game available.  The detail is so high it’s crazy. Dean Richards of EA Production Team has been interviewed by the guys over at GameZone and we have some of the highlights here for you:

Q: Are any new control features being added to the game?

A: We have added a few gameplay controls to this year's game which adds to our gameplay depth and responsive controls.  These are:

  • First Touch Control
  • New set of Freestyle Moves, includes Knock on and cancel knock on
  • New Tackle/Marking control
  • Low hard cross
  • Manual pass
  • Chip shot
  • Fake shot
  • Through lobs
  • Early cross

Q: Many other game modes will be available in FIFA 2005 – what are they?

A: Along with our regular Play Now flow we have the following:

  • Career Mode
  • Tournament Mode
  • Create Tournament
  • Practice Mode
  • New Create Player
  • Play Online - PS2, Xbox and PC
  • EA Sports™ Jukebox
  • My FIFA 2005 Store - Over 70 un-lockables!
  • My FIFA 2005 Trophy Room

Q: Tell us about the new animation system, which reacts to every button press with authentic responsiveness.

A: The new animation system allows the animators to adjust the speed, timing and blending of animations. This gives the animators more control over the look and feel of the game than ever before and in the end allows for more responsive controls to the user.

Q: What did it take to create the new animation system?  How much time was spent on it – how many artists / programmers were involved?

A: It took a lot of manpower on both the animation and SE side to create the new animation system and because of that effort; it paid dividends for our animations seen in the game this year. The concept and prototyping phase for this year began with one animator, one programmer and at times grew as large as six programmers, six animators. We currently have over 6000 individual animation sequences in the game using this system.

Check out the full interview including discussions on Career mode and Online play by clicking here.

Crystal Palace 0 Chelsea 2

Crystal Palace 0 Chelsea 2Chelsea won our first three League games for the first time in ten years and celebrated first goals for Didier Drogba and Tiago.

Chelsea started in the 4-3-3 formation in which we finished at Birmingham on Saturday, so the only changes were William Gallas for Ricardo Carvalho and Celestine Babayaro for injured Wayne Bridge.

Drogba opened the scoring in the 28th minute with the kind of far post header associated with prime Kerry Dixon. The cross came from fleet footed Babayaro, cleverly avoiding being closed down as he ran on to Kezman’s alert ball, and curling in the kind of invitation that powerful Drogba accepts so gracefully.

He ran to the Chelsea fans, not with relief so much as in a manner we may see a lot of in years to come.

Chelsea kept pressing forward for the rest of the half, and little cameos by Drogba, Kezman and Cole showed them all to be capable of further success, while Tiago’s increasing promptings suggested he was coming to terms with the Premier League.

Babayaro, however, was leaden when run at, and a third foul in 15 minutes, a block on Johnson, brought Chelsea’s first yellow card of the campaign – indeed it was the first yellow card in Chelsea’s games.

Mourinho sent on Adrian Mutu for his first appearance of the season in place of Kezman. Kezman had been playing up the left with Cole on the right, and that’s from where Mutu ran inside to square the ball for Tiago to hammer a low cross-shot from the edge of the box into the far corner, putting Chelsea two up. Mutu had only been on for two minutes.

Chelsea introduced the fifth gear in search of goal three, and the fans celebrated their new hero by chanting: “He comes from Portugal, he hates the Arsenal: Tiago, wo-oh, Tiago, wo-oh-oh-oh.” They also indulged in a: “Boring, boring Chelsea…

The third goal didn't come but the football was far from boring. A game with a happy ending. Right on time John Terry brilliantly blocked a Hall shot. So, three clean sheets have been kept and as Palace didn't have a shot on target, only two efforts have had to be stopped by Cech so far this season.

Full match report here.

SFTLA Premiership Cup :- Spurs v Blackburn

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

Premiership SFTLA Cup 1st Leg : Spurs v Blackburn

Last Season Division Champions Blackburn under the reigns of Deadcell now mixing it up with the big boys in the Premiership found themselves drawn up against Premiership Runners up from last Season Spurs in this first round Premiership Cup tie.

Spurs decided to play their home leg first and all eyes were on the Spurs team after a shaky start to their League Campaign saw them scrape a narrow home win against another newly promoted side Celtic 2-1.

It was important that the Spurs defence held firm so that the foundations were laid going into the Away Leg. Both Teams made some minor tactical changes as the game got underway, Spurs passing the ball about well with Blackburn chasing and putting every Spurs player under pressure.

With 16mins of the Match gone a lovely ball out to the left wing found Postiga who worked his magic and found the space needed to whip in the cross which found Giant Kanoute unmarked in box and his header gave the Blackburn Keeper no chance as Spurs took the lead 1-0.

Blackburn began to press forward in large numbers looking for a vital away goal , but the Spurs defence were in good form and little chances were forthcoming for the visitors and Blackburn were beginning to get frustrated as the referee blew his whistle to end the 1st Half.

The Second Half began and Blackburn were quickly into stride passing the ball around well trying to find that important ball that would give their strikers a chance on goal , but again the Spurs defence were solid with Ledley King inspirational in the heart of well organised Spurs defence.

Spurssoaked up the pressure and hit Blackburn on the counter attack and on 50mins a fierce shot from Kanoute saw the Blackburn keeper pull of a great save too keep his side in this game, but from the resulting corner Blackburn were all at sea as Bunjevcevic found acres of space and headed Spurs into an important 2-0 lead.

Blackburn tried desperately to get back into this game as they threw everything including the kitchen sink at Spurs, but again the Spurs defence held firm.

The whistle went to end this 1st Leg with Spurs very much in the driving seat going into the 2nd Leg with a 2-0 lead.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sweetpatch FTL Academy - PC League

Premiership SFTLA Cup 2nd Leg :- Blackburn v Spurs

With Spurs leading 2-0 going into this Second Leg, Blackburn knew that they needed at least Two Goals to force extra time and on top of that keep the Spurs from scoring.

Blackburn started well and immediately went on the attack looking to break the deadlock early on and get themselves right back into this Cup Tie , but like the first leg, the Spurs defence were solid and Blackburn players new that it was going to take something special to breach this fortress of a defence as they went looking for the opening goal.

The home side were having the better of the possession as Spurs looked to be happy soaking up the pressure and attack on the counter but neither side could open the scoring as both Teams went into the Half Time interval at 0-0.

Spurs got the Second Half underway and again played some nice possession football and on 54mins a ball chipped into the Blackburn penalty area was nicely controlled by Kanoute , but a rash challenge from behind from an eager Blackburn defender saw no hesitation from the Referee as he pointed to the Penalty Spot.

Robbie Keane stepped up and sent the Blackburn Keeper the wrong way to put Spurs 0-1 up and looking very good for a place in the next round.

Blackburn rallied but couldn't find their way past this well organised Spurs defence and the whistle went to end this game and Blackburns hopes of a good Cup run as Spurs booked their place in the next round with 3-0 win on Aggregate.

FIFA 2005 Play of the Day @ IGN

FIFA 2005 Play of the Day @ IGNThe IGN offices are full of editor game battles. From Madden to Top Spin to ESPN NHL Hockey to NBA Live, if there's a great game within their grasps, they're not only going to play it, they're going to play it until they can beat their fellow editors down to the point of shame.

The IGN Sports Play of the Day will capture some of these moments that define their office. They are the best moments from the best sports games spanning all systems. Moments of celebrations for some. Moments of frustration for others.

In the last week they have started posting their video clips from FIFA 2005 encounters. Click on the media links to check out some of highlights from recent games of FIFA 2005 including:

  • The mighty Arsenal go kick-for-kick with Real Madrid, scoring a sensational goal and stopping Beckham from bending a shot;
  • Are the Italians the best soccer players in the world? Find out by checking out the action between Roma and Juventus. You'll see a yellow card, a goal, and a post shot, not to mention some fancy footwork; and
  • After the recent acquisition of Michael Owen, they went in, adjusted their lineups and put him and his new squad up to the test, sticking Real Madrid in a game against Man-U. If he plays as well in real life as he does in the game, you might be looking at one of the biggest deals of the year.

GamePro FIFA 2005 Hands-On

GamePro.com are the latest to post their FIFA 2005 Hands-on preview for the Xbox.

Check out the full preview and some great new screen shots by clicking here

They discuss 2 main topics:

First Touch
The funny thing about new features in sports games is that you always wonder why it’s taken so long for some developer to have figured it out. In FIFA Soccer 2005, the big focus is on a quality first touch—a skill that separates the greats from the just average. In the past, you receive a pass from a teammate then either shoot, pass, or dribble. The basics of that haven’t changed; the effectiveness of your next move is what’s different. Better players can keep the ball away from the defense and position the ball for a good shot more easily. Used in conjunction with an improved version of last year’s Off the Ball control, you can begin to mount some serious attacks.

The early preview version does indeed reveal a pronounced difference in the animation and skill set of great players. It doesn’t take as much to protect the ball and quick passes are more precise. One aspect that takes getting used to is the way the momentum of the ball and players is handled this year. It looks realistic, but makes the action a trifle harder to control.

Visuals also are closer to real life with character models that edge nearer to their human inspiration.

Online Groove
FIFA was playable online last year for the PlayStation 2, but this year gamers can enjoy this function on both PS2 and Xbox. Online modes were not available to test just yet, but look for info on that once the upcoming reviews see print.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0Chelsea have recorded our first back-to-back home wins against Manchester United for 13 years and as last season it was by the narrowest of margins. In a tight, hard-fought game of few chances, it was the boot of Eidur Gudjohnsen that made the crucial difference.

José Mourinho handed debuts to six players, Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Alexeï Smertin and Didier Drogba from the start, Ricardo Carvalho and Mateja Kezman as subs, so it would have been a lot to ask for a performance of total cohesion and understanding but this Chelsea side had just enough, both in determination and trouble for the unfamiliar Man U back line, to win the day.

Chelsea found the nerve-settling breakthrough. It came from a counter-attack, Fortune totally missing a clearance out of the Chelsea area. It allowed Gérémi to break with pace before steadying himself and lofting the ball into Drogba who towering above all around, headed down to the supporting Gudjohnsen.

Initially it looked as if the knock down was destined to run out of play but Gudjohnsen made up the ground, lofted over Howard towards goal and then chased in. Keane racing back was too late to clear and Chelsea were ahead.

This was not yet a Chelsea team into full stride but in the month of the Olympic Games, we have left the starting blocks well. Full match report here.

Who will win the Premiership?

Who will win the Premiership? All the talk ahead of the new English Premiership season has concerned the so-called 'Big Three'.

How will Arsenal, unbeaten in the Premiership last season, fare without inspirational skipper Patrick Vieira if he packs his bags for Madrid?

Can Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich's millions help Chelsea take that extra step to become champions?

And can Manchester United, who for the first time in over a decade aren't the pre-season favourites, bounce back from their disappointing third-place finish in 2003/4?

If the betting moves are to be believed then it's Chelsea who will be crowned champions next May.

Black Cats Bounce Back

Coca-Cola Football LeagueTuesday night saw a host of games played in the Coca-Cola Championship:

  • Sunderland bounced back from their surprise defeat to Coventry on the opening day of the season to beat Crewe 3-1.
  • Wigan are one of five teams on four points, one point above the Black Cats, as they were good value for a 2-0 win over last season's FA Cup finalists Millwall.
  • Coventry lost 2-1 at Cardiff after letting a lead slip.
  • West Ham are another side on four points after Teddy Sheringham's first goal for the Hammers with nine minutes left was enough to see off Reading at Upton Park.
  • Gillingham secured a 2-1 win over Leeds in the first-ever league meeting between the sides at the Priestfield Stadium.
  • Plymouth won the battle of the promoted sides against Brighton at the Withdean Stadium with a 2-0 triumph.
  • Sheffield United were held to their second successive goalless draw at home to Stoke, who claimed a point despite the second-half dismissal of Gifton Noel-Williams.
  • Rotherham and Burnley, who drew their first matches on Saturday, took a point each from their goalless draw at Millmoor.

Kezman in the clear

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea can confirm that Mateja Kezman's claim for wrongful dismissal against AS Roma on July 29 was upheld yesterday.

The club's new Serbian striker is now free from any suspension that could have started on August 17th for three matches.

A Football Association disciplinary commission heard the claim against his red card in the second of the Champions World Series matches the club played on its recent US tour.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon: "We are obviously delighted for Mateja that he will not face any further punishment for the incident. Club officials worked hard compiling the evidence and we were confident the claim would be successful. We would also like to thank the FA's disciplinary commission for its consideration."

The claim was based on written and video evidence of the incident, there were no club representatives or the player present. Kezman had already missed the the last US tour match against AC Milan following the dismissal.

An FA statement said: "At a Disciplinary Commission hearing today, the appeal for wrongful dismissal by Chelsea's Mateja Kezman was upheld. He will therefore not serve any suspension and no extra punishment would be invoked in the case of another sending-off this season. Kezman was sent off for violent conduct in a pre-season friendly against Roma on 29th July in the USA."

Webber Double Downs Rangers

Coca-Cola Football LeagueWatford roared to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship after a crushing 3-0 win over QPR.

Striker Danny Webber struck twice in each half and returning Bruce Dyer added the third as promoted Rangers got a taste of life at a higher level.

Webber soon silenced the travelling fans after just 12 minutes by latching on to a hopeful lofted through ball from Neal Ardley to catch Rangers flat-footed, round hesitant goalkeeper Chris Day and slot home at the near post, where Georges Santos could only help the ball over the line.

Rangers felt cheated when referee Tony Bates disallowed what looked a genuine equaliser by Kevin McLeod.

The Hoops winger pounced after Richard Lee dropped a cross at his feet in the 35th minute, but was harshly adjudged to have fouled the Hornets 'keeper, prompting Ian Holloway to defy his touchline ban.

The QPR boss claimed he was a changed man after a recent anger management course, but he was furious as he rushed down from his seat in the stands to remonstrate with the officials.

But Dyer doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, stooping to convert a Paul Devlin cross with a diving header at the far post, where the Rangers defenders once again looked asleep.

And it got worse for the visitors on the hour mark when Webber stormed forward to round Day again, first hitting the post before converting at the second attempt.

Coca-Cola Football League Championship Review

Coca-Cola Football LeagueLeeds and Leicester experienced contrasting fortunes as they began their quest for a quick return to the Premiership on the opening day of the newly-named Coca-Cola Championship.

Leeds pointed to happier times ahead for their supporters by beating Derby 1-0 in the first game of the day. Frazer Richardson netted the only goal of the match which kicked off at lunchtime at Elland Road.

Derby hit a post in stoppage time but Kevin Blackwell's Leeds side deserved the victory with a performance which will have lifted hopes in West Yorkshire.

However, Leicester's ambitions took a knock as they could only draw 0-0 at home to West Ham. Dion Dublin's sending-off reduced the Foxes to 10 men against West Ham after just 18 minutes at the Walkers Stadium.

Coventry finished the day on top of the table after beating Sunderland 2-0 in the late game at Highfield Road.

Steve Cotterill saw Burnley draw 1-1 in his first competitive match in charge with Andy Gray scoring the equaliser for Sheffield United after 52 minutes.

Dean Bowditch scored the winner for Ipswich inside the first minute of the second half as they came back from a goal down to beat Gillingham 2-1.

Brighton's first goal of the new season was scored by Maheta Molango, who put the visitors ahead at Reading after just 19 seconds. However, the south coast side were soon pegged back with Reading levelling through Dave Kitson two minutes in. And the Royals secured a 3-2 victory thanks to goals from James Harper (41) and Nicky Forster (59) although Jake Robinson had the last word for Brighton as he netted in the 63rd minute.

QPR drew 1-1 with Rotherham. The Londoners, who won promotion to England's second tier last season, struck first with Gareth Ainsworth netting in the fifth minute only for the Yorkshire side to cancel out their lead through Paul Shaw 10 minutes later.

A late equaliser denied Cardiff a win at Crewe with Michael Higdon earning a 2-2 draw for the Railwaymen with an 85th-minute goal.

Scotland international Paul Devlin scored an equaliser but gave away a penalty as Watford lost 2-1 at Preston.

Nottingham Forest took a 1-1 draw from their visit to Wigan with Gareth Taylor's 55th-minute effort cancelling out Lee McCulloch's 38th-minute opener.

Plymouth earned a scoreless draw from their first game in the division, holding Millwall at Home Park.

On Sunday Stoke beat Wolves 2 v 1.

Goodbye Gianfranco - Chelsea 3 Real Zaragoza 0

Visit Chelsea mini siteGianfranco Zola played the final 27 minutes of a game that drew a huge 38,067 to finally say goodbye to their hero. A perfect afternoon was completed by a deserved 3-0 win as current day Chelsea completed what has been a confidence boosting pre-season.

The sun-drenched conditions prevented the game from being an all-action affair but strikes from Didier Drogba and Scott Parker and an own goal as well as the Zola appearance gave everyone plenty to cheer about.

It took only eight minutes for Chelsea to take the lead. Ferreira, who has arrived with a reputation as a dangerous crosser, hit in a testing ball from deep and Didier Drogba was well placed at the far post to tap a low shot into the net. That nerve settling first goal at the Bridge was already under his belt.

Three changes at the break were made by José Mourinho, Carvalho coming on for Gallas, Parker for Duff and Kezman for Gudjohnsen.

Three minutes after the restart, Chelsea’s lead was doubled and again Ferreira’s crossing was vital. Lampard’s great ball from deep found him and when the right-back drove the ball low into the area, Milito, under pressure from the Chelsea attack, turned the ball into his own net.

Glen Johnson replaced Gérémi as the hour approached but went to right-back with Ferreira pushing forward into midfield and then with 63 minutes on the clock came the biggest ovation of all. Gianfranco Zola replaced Drogba in attack.

On 76 minutes came the moment of Zola magic the crowd had been impatiently waiting for. Receiving a ball from Makelele, he showed that the legendary vision was still in full working order, spotting Lampard’s run and putting him clean through on goal.

With eight minutes remaining, Scott Parker showed him how it should be done – turning in a pass from Kezman himself after a remarkably similar move; Lampard this time providing the penetrating pass.

Somehow the game wouldn’t have been complete without a Zola free-kick. It looked like we may not be treated to one but with two minutes remaining, the Zaragoza defence obliged with a foul. It was from a narrow angle but the maestro still forced keeper Garcia into a punched save. The cameo was completed when Lampard was inches away from volleying a Zola corner in.

After the game, Franco spoke to the fans from the pitch and performed a lap of honour. The applause is still echoing around Stamford Bridge.

Reyes of light for Gunners

Reyes of light for GunnersJose Reyes produced a performance to savour at the Millennium Stadium as Premiership champions Arsenal added the Community Shield to their trophy collection with a 3-1 win over Manchester United.

Reyes' pace completely unhinged a Manchester United defence that got more ragged as the game went on.

The Spaniard set up Gilberto Silva's opener and scored the second himself after Alan Smith had levelled with a brilliant 20-yard volley.

There was more than a touch of luck about the Gunners' third as Mikael Silvestre deflected Ashley Cole's wayward cross into his own net, but, given Arsenal's overall superiority, the margin of victory was a fair one.

ChampionsWorld Series 2004 - Chelsea 2 Milan 3

Visit Chelsea mini siteI know this is old news now and I know we lost but I had to post it any way for completeness.

Eidur Gudjohnsen and Didier Drogba proved themselves a handy partnership by both scoring first-half goals, but a 2-1 half-time lead turned into a 3-2 deficit by the end, our only defeat of the USA tour. Also, Ricardo Carvalho played the second-half, his first Chelsea appearance.

After about 20 minutes Scott Parker took the ball and crossed for Gudjohnsen to cleverly slice a finish across off-balance Christian Abbiati.

Seven minutes later the Italians were level when Cafu sensationally volleyed in at Carlo Cudicini’s near post from an acute angle, catching the goalkeeper off-guard, after an Andruy Shevchencko flick from the centre of the penalty area had set him up.

Amongst the careful football and intelligent pass-and-move play there was some real class breaking out. Amongst the Chelsea fans there was some real stick for Hernan Crespo.

Chelsea reacted well and took the game to Milan. Drogba was proving a handful, Gudjohnsen was constantly an intelligent menace and the team had strong shape.

Then after Drogba was fouled Parker fired in another free-kick which deflected in the six yard box for a corner. Lampard took the outswinger and Drogba rose majestically to thunder in a wonderful header.

Carvalho replaced William Gallas at half-time, Celestine Babayaro came on for Bridge and Damien Duff for Parker.

A minute later Milan won a corner and Kaka’s outswinger was knocked in by the charging, unmarked Costacurta for an unlikely equaliser.

Glen Johnson replaced Ferreira and Robert Huth came on for Makelele, then right on time Shevchenko’s free-kick caught Cudicini stranded as he tried to cover across goal. We were behind. Milan had done well and asked questions of the new Chelsea that no-one else has managed.

New EA Sports FIFA 2005 site

New FIFA 2005 siteAs I am sure you already know, this week a new section dedicated to FIFA 2005 has opened at EA Sports official website. It features information and screenshots of the game for 5 different platforms. The section also includes a new video diary in which Danny Isaac and Matt Jones talk about the absolute broadcast, dribbling, football fusion and other features of FIFA 2005 such as the return of the radar (our number 1 download of the week here).

They also have a very nice Windows background for you plus some new screenshots.
