FIFA 06 News - Demo

FIFA 06 News - DemoEA Admin EAUK_Protagonist has recently posted this update (30 Aug 2005 @ 23:13) on the availability of the FIFA 06 Demo:

"I guarantee it won't be released for at least 10 hours - for two reasons:

  1. the decision to release it will be made in Europe, and it won't be taken until at the earliest 10am BST and
  2. the team who will be uploading the demo won't be around until around 10am BST.

That's assuming that at 9am everything is ready to go... which is unlikely."

So its all sounding very promising for its imminent release today, but get all the latest progress updates from the EA FIFA 06 Forums.

Scottish Premier League Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Scottish Premier League, Gaz Scott, brings us a summary of all the action from the weekend's matches: Scottish Premier League Review
Aberdeen 3
Falkirk 0

Three first-half strikes from Aberdeen, including two from man-of-the-match Jamie Smith, gave them a comfortable win at Pittodrie.

Rangers 0
Hibernian 3
Substitute Ivan Sproule stunned Ibrox by scoring a hat-trick for Hibernian as Rangers suffered a hangover after their midweek Champions League qualification.
Hearts 2 Motherwell 1
Goals from Rudi Skacel and Edgaras Jankauskas gave Hearts the win and extends their lead at the top of the SPL to five points.
Dundee United 1
Caley Thistle 1
Inverness Caley Thistle player-manager Craig Brewster earned his side a point at Tannadice with a late equaliser against Dundee United.
Kilmarnock 2
Livingston 0
Colin Nish signalled that there would be life in Kilmarnock without Kris Boyd by hitting a hat-trick that left poor Livingston at the foot of the SPL.
Dunfermline 1
Celtic 4
Celtic returned to form with a fine win over a benevolent Dunfermline side at East End Park.

Dutch Holland Casino Eredivisie Review

New Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Dutch Holland Casino Eredivisie, Tom Duurland, brings us a summary of all the action from last weekend's matches: Dutch Holland Casino Eredivisie Review
ADO Den Haag 1
SC Heereveen 0
It lasted a long time before ADO could profit from the weak game of Heereveen. It was eventually a defender of ADO who scored in the extra time, deserved 1-0.
NEC 1
RKC Waalwijk 3
It was a close match until keeper Babos from NEC blundered and made it 1-2. It became eventually correct but flattered victory for RKC, who now have 9 points from 3 games.
Sparta Rotterdam 1
NAC Breda 0
After 21 Eredivisie defeats in a row Sparta won at last. NAC could find no shots without their stiker, Pierre van Hooydonk, who was missed.
Vitesse 0
AZ 5
It was a lesson in effectiveness from AZ with 2 goals from Arveladze and hatrick from Perez, Vitesse were swept aside very easy.
RBC Roosendaal 1
Willem II 1
It was clear to see that both teams were not in form. Just flat for time both teams succeeded to score once. But with 1 point both teams hurry up nothing.
Heracles Almelo 2
FC Groningen 1
The sensation of Heracles lasts even still. Groningen had the lead for a long time but Tamerus and Quansah ensured that the team from Almelo has now 7 points from 3 games.
FC Utrecht 3
FC Twente 1
Utrecht were the better team and gave away few chances to Twente, but the chances which Twente got were, however, immediately home. Utrecht came closest by scoring 1-2, but directly afterwards it was decided after Touma scored a beautiful solo goal.
Roda JC 0
PSV 3
Roda JC did not play bad but were not able to ensure a surprise against PSV. Farfan, Beasly and captain Cocu scored the goals for the team from Eindhoven, which seem to be ready again for a beautiful Champions League season.

Ajax 1
Feyenoord 2

It was classic number 100 match between Ajax and Feyenoord. It was a game with much fight and passion, which was decided by the two superstrikers of Feyenoord: Salomon Kalou and Dirk Kuyt. Charisteas scored against but it was already too late for Ajax, who lose for the first time in 10 years at home to Feyenoord.

English Coca-Cola League 2 Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Coca-Cola League 2, Sam Bradley, brings us a summary of all the action from last weekend's matches: English Coca-Cola League 2 Review
Darlington 2
Rochdale 1
10 man Darlington carried on their good start to the season with a win over Rochdale, with goals coming from Simon Johnson and Carlos Logan. Grant Holt scored from the spot on 61 minutes for ‘Dale.
Grimsby 2
Rushden & Diamonds 0
The Mariners beat Rushden thanks to veteran defender John McDermott’s 25 yard volley in the 1st half, and (try and pronounce this name) Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala’s penalty a few minutes after the break.
Leyton Orient 0
Shrewsbury Town 1
Shrewsbury won away for the 1st time this season thanks to a 3rd minute penalty converted by Colin McMenamin after Orient defender John Mackie fouled Dave Edwards in the area.
Lincoln City 0
Carlisle Utd 0
A “bore draw” at Sincil Bank as neither side could break the deadlock.
Macclesfield Town 1
Bury 0
Macclesfield secured their 1st league win of the season and moved off the foot of the table thanks to midfielder Martin Bullock’s goal in the 18th minute.
Mansfield Town 2 Notts County 3
Two late goals from Notts County saw them overcome Mansfield in this derby match. Richie Barker scored after 15 minutes for the home side but Glynn Hurst equalised for the Magpies 3 minutes later. Gareth Jelleyman restored Mansfield’s lead on the hour, but a header from Michael Edwards and an 87th minute strike from Hurst gave Notts the 3 points and maintained their position at the top of the table.
Northampton Town 3
Bsoton United 2
Andy Kirk scored against his former club before the Cobblers went on to score 2 more goals to win the match. Alan White equalised for Boston before Ian Taylor restored the lead. Jason Crowe then madie it 3 – 1 to Northampton, and Ian Ross ensured there was a tense finish to the match when he salvaged some hope late on making the score 3 – 2.
Stockport County 1
Peterborough Utd 1
Stockport got out of jail as Posh dominated the entire 90 minute of the match. James Quinn scored after only 2 minutes for the away side, when he followed up a rebounded shot. Posh looked to take all 3 points but Sean St Ledger’s late blunder meant an O.G was put next to his name giving Stockport a share of the spoils.

Torquay Utd 0
Chester City 1

A late goal from Ryan Lowe meant more misery for the Gulls as they carry on their bad start to the season. Chester’s goal was deserved as the home side had rarely threatened at all.
Wrexham 3
Barnet 1
The Dragons got off to the perfect start as Mark Jones gave them the lead with less than a minute gone on the clock. Paul Warhurst made the score 2 – 0 after half an hour. Ian Hendon scored from the spot for Barnet on the stroke of half time, but Robbie Foy made sure the 3 points were going to Wrexham as he curled his shot in to the corner of the net.
Wycombe Wanderers 0
Cheltenham Town 0
Another “bore draw” as neither side could hit the back of the net in this close encounter. Jamie Victory went close for the Robins when he headed against the bar but that was about as good as it got at the Causeway Stadium this afternoon.

FIFA 06 News - Demo

FIFA 06 News - DemoEA have released the following statement in their FIFA 06 Forum today:

"For those who are looking forward to the FIFA 06 demo, there will be a demo released for the game around the time it is due to launch.

At present we do not have a precise date for the release of the demo, as soon as we do we'll let you know."

So that reads to me that the rumour that the demo would be out today is untrue. Keep checking back daily as we will keep you posted as we get any updates on the release of the demo.

English Coca-Cola League 2: Rochdale 3 Macclesfield 1

English Coca-Cola League 2: Rochdale 3 Macclesfield 1Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Coca-Cola League 2, Sam Bradley, brings us a summary of all the action from last weekend's Macclesfield match.

Well a bad day at the office for the lads today, not even the shadow of what happened on Tuesday night. But to be honest though I could see it happening I wasn't too confident about today's game. How typical though that Dale get hammered 5-0 at home to Bradford, and we win 3-2 away at Forest and now we get beat today, and Dale record their 1st home win of the season.

Check out Sam's full report for this match by clicking here. For a more successful result and some great photos check out his review of Macclesfield's excellent Carling Cup victory over Nottingham Forest in the week by clicking here.

English Premier League: Spurs 0 Chelsea 2

English Premier League: Spurs 0 Chelsea 2Asier del Horno’s first goal for Chelsea and Damien Duff’s first goal of the season gave Chelsea an easy victory after Mido had been sent off on 24 minutes.

It is now 31 League games without defeat for Chelsea against Tottenham. As a central defensive partnership, Gallas and Terry have still not conceded a League goal under Mourinho’s management.

  • 0-1: Del Horno’s great moment came a minute later when he got power on to Lampard’s outswinging corner with a strong header and it bounced in off the post. He had been sprinting in as the corner was taken and stopped suddenly. No-one stopped with him and the header was unchallenged. The Chelsea choir in the corner behind Cech’s goal were soon in song: “Training session, training session, training session at the Lane…” And Del Horno got his name chanted to the ‘Vialli’ mantra.
  • 0-2: Chelsea’s hold on the game felt complete, and the scoreline reflected that when, with 20 minutes to go, Duff poached his first goal of the season. Wright-Phillips had tortured Kelly with a burst of pace from Makelele’s excellent pass and crossed on the sprint for Duff to finish. The Chelsea choir now came up with: “Your season’s over, la-la-la-la-la,” to the Gianfranco Zola mantra.

Stoppage time was greeted by the Chelsea choir with a new song: “It’s so empty, it’s so empty, it’s so empty at the Lane,” which was then re-cut to: “It’s like Highbury at the Lane…

So it’s four League wins out of four this season, eight goals scored, none conceded.

English Premier League: Chelsea 4 WBA 0

English Premier League: Chelsea 4 WBA 0Chelsea returned to the top of the Premiership table in some style. Visitors West Brom were simply not given a sniff of a goal at Stamford Bridge while after a patient start, the chances at the other end were snapped up with relish.

There was very little to fault in this performance. It’s true West Brom contributed to their downfall with some non-Premiership standard defending but Chelsea’s running was strong, the movement was good, the finishing was sharp and it was all capped off by excellent showings from the summer’s new signings.

  • 1-0: With 22 minutes gone, left-back Robinson played a loose pass and Wright-Phillips was on to it in a flash. Drogba received the pass on the right, crossed low with a crucial contribution coming from Essien when he dummied in front of goal. Lampard, lurking at the back post collected with one touch and dispatched the ball just inside the post with the second. No prizes for guessing the goal celebration. Two days after Frank became a father for the first, his team-mates took no second asking to line-up alongside the goalscorer for a spot of cradle-rocking. It was his 50th Chelsea goal.
  • 2-0: Robinson was again at fault, allowing the ever-persistent Wright-Phillips to rob him out wide. The cross came in low and Joe Cole had the presence of mind to find the gap between the retreating defenders in front of goal.
  • 3-0: The third goal was Drogba’s, a far more convincing strike at the same end as his Arsenal winner. Gallas narrowly missed converting a Cole corner and it was Del Horno, enjoying another top class performance who returned the ball in low. Drogba turned it past Kirkland with a first-time contact.
  • 4-0: Crespo was party to Chelsea’s fourth, making his presence felt after Robben had run the West Brom defence dizzy on the left. The ball took fortunate ricochets off Crespo and then Robben but there was nothing lucky about Lampard’s finish.

It was a highly impressive first full game by the Ghanaian Michael Essien and an equally impressive return by Chelsea to the most powerful form of last season. You had to feel a little sorry for Carlo Cudicini. Given the chance to remind everyone of his talents, he’s had more testing evenings making a cup of espresso.

English Premier League: Manchester United 1 Aston Villa 0 Our Official Sweetpatch Reporter for Manchester United, KakZ, brings us his report from last weekend's match.

Manchester United defeated Aston Villa with a single goal to fight for their 3 points.

There were many chances for Manchester United in the first half. Ji Sung Park came close to scoring his first goal for Manchester United, but it was not to be as Aston Villa’s Swedish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen made a beautiful save and unluckily it hit the crossbar and flew away for a corner.

But Van Nistelrooy handed Manchester United the victory when he just tipped a cross ball from Ronaldo, who had just come on minutes before.

FIFA 06 News Updates

FIFA 06 News UpdatesHere we have the latest great bits of news regarding FIFA 2006:

Play FIFA 06 First
How do you fancy being among the first in the UK to play the finished version of FIFA 06 weeks before it is released?

Do you like the idea of visiting EA's European headquarters and competing against other FIFA players for some top notch prizes?

If you answered yes to both these questions, can make your own way to EA's UK office in Chertsey, Surrey on September 7th and are over the age of 18 let EA know!

They have got 15 places open to anyone who wants to come along and be the first to play FIFA 06. They will be drawing names at random from all those who are interested in coming along, so only respond if you can make it.

If you want to come along, send an email with your full name, address and date of birth by clicking here.

You have until August 31st to apply.

Check back soon when we will have some excellent unique news on this event!

New Penalty Kick System
Some more details of FIFA 06 have been passed Soccer Gaming's way. This time they have been told that the penalty kick system has been vastly expanded.

You can now move your GK along the line before the kick is taken. The GK will move his arms and jump as he moves (think Dudek in the UCL final).

Taking a penalty kick now offers more as well. You can choose between 3 different types of shots:

  • you can pass the ball in with the inside of your foot,
  • you can drive the ball in with a firm strike,
  • or you can choose to delicately chip the ball in.

PK saves are now more realistic as well, with not every save going directly out, meaning follow up rebound goals are also possible.

Also, check out our brand new FIFA 06 News Page where we have all the FIFA 06 news that has ever been posted here for you and it will build up to be the full diary of the development and release of FIFA 06.

Keep checking back here for all the very latest FIFA 06 news.

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Arsenal 0

English Premier League: Chelsea 1 Arsenal 0 It won’t go down as his best strike of a football ever but as at Cardiff two weeks ago, Didier Drogba has put the Gunners to the sword. The substitute’s second-half goal was enough to give Chelsea a first league win over Arsenal for a decade.

The battle between London’s two strongest teams was everything you might expect. Tight, competitive with some marvelous moments of individual technique but on this occasion, short on genuine goal scoring chances. Those that did come were mostly Chelsea's.

This game was always going to be won, if at all, by a marginal difference between the teams, and so it proved. Where Chelsea’s defence remained alert throughout, a moment of slack marking in the heart of the visitors’ back line gave Drogba sight of the goal and the rare chance didn’t go begging.

It was a sweet moment for the big striker having been dropped from the starting position he had occupied for the first two games. Hernán Crespo’s wonder winner last weekend was enough to earn him the place.

Mourinho will play down the significance of this win but the game brought back many memories of the 1-0 victory over Man United in our first home match last season.

It is now six games undefeated against Arsenal, our longest such run since 1967-1970. With three wins, including this one in that sequence, has the tide of London’s football now well and truly turned?

Check out the full match report by clicking here.

Scottish Premier League Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Scottish Premier League, Gaz Scott, brings us a summary of all the action from the weekend's matches: Scottish Premier League Review
Rangers 3
Celtic 1

Rangers stormed back to the top of the SPL with a well deserved victory over their bitter rivals Celtic. Both teams started brightly until a rash 2 footed lunge by Celtic's Alan Thompson on Nacho Novo saw a straight red card produced on the 23rd minute.

This left Celtic facing a uphill battle against a well organised Rangers side and it didn't take long for the advantage to take effect. Marvin Andrews strolled forward on the 35th minute and chipped forward an exquisite pass, Prso lost his marker, swivelled and volleyed the ball by the diving Celtic keeper. Just before halftime Buffel could've made it 2 but missed the ball completely.

But 6 minutes after the restart the Belgian made amends when he took a delightful pass from Loverkrands, taking the ball on his chest & bursting clear of 2 Celtic defenders and shooting hard and low with the outside of his foot thru the keepers legs.

Now it was total Rangers domination and Loverkrands missed 3 glorious chances as Rangers made the extra man tell, passing & probing the Celtic defence. Celtic made some changes, Maloney replacing Nakamura and Zurawaski replacing the tired and ineffective John Hartson, but astonishingly a rash tired tackle in the 85th min by Ian Murray on Maloney gave Celtic a lifeline when he slotted home the penalty kick.

Immediately Rangers raced forward and were awarded a penalty of their own when Prso was fouled in the box by Stillian Petrov and Novo made no mistake from the spot restoring Rangers 2 goal advantage.

This all became too much for Celtic captain Neil Lennon who was walking a tightrope for most of the game and as the full time whistle sounded he was shown a straight red card and had to be restrained by team mates as he physically manhandled match referee Stuart Dougal and his officials.

Hearts 2
Aberdeen 0
Hearts who look to be the 3rd force in the SPL started the game strongly and Skacel opened the scoring on the 20th min with a nice finish past the on rushing Aberdeen keeper. Into the last 10 mins and Hearts doubled their lead when Pospilsil made it 2-0 and game over.
Falkirk 0
Hibernian 2
Hibernian started well, some nice slick passing and were duly rewarded 10 minutes before halftime when Scott Brown finished coolly from the edge of the box. Hibs were deservedly in the lead and they doubled that in the 62nd minute when the ref awarded a penalty kick which was duly slotted home and that proved to be the killer goal as Falkirk struggled to make any further impact on this game.
Motherwell 4
Dundee United 5
Explosive match here as Motherwell stormed into a 2 goal lead thru McCormack& Mcdonald, Millar gets one back before halftime, then Fitzpatrick restores Motherwell's 2 goal lead, David Fernandez equalises on the 53rd minute only for Hamilton to make it 3-2, astonishingly Grant Brebner hits a double in the 71st & 74th min to make it Motherwell 4 Dundee Utd 5 and that proved to be the winner as Motherwell couldn't find an equaliser.
Livingston 1
Dunfermline 1
Basement battlers Livingston and Dunfermline scrapping for points early in the season, the game was sloppy, both teams making mistakes and play being scrappy for long periods, but just before halftime Dunfermline break the deadlock when Lee Makel buries the ball into the bottom left hand corner. Both teams have their chances and Ramon Pereira gets the equaliser on the 64th minute but a share of the points here as the game finishes at 1-1.
Inverness Caley 2
Kilmarnock 2
Player manager Craig Brewster scores the only goal of the half in this scrappy hard fought match on the 40th minute. 71st minute Colin Nish equalises then 60 secs later Brewster restores the lead, some more poor defensive work by Inverness costs them dearly as Boyd buries the ball and makes it 2-2 on the 74th min and that proved to be the last goal as the 2 teams played out the remaining minutes.

FIFA 06 News Updates

FIFA 06 News UpdatesOur partners at Soccer Gaming have posted some great bits of news regarding FIFA 2006:

  • Variable Crowds Confirmed
EA have confirmed that variable crowd capacities will be visible in FIFA 06.

This feature apparently works in Manager Mode (formerly Career Mode) with the crowd size depending on how well your team is performing, or how important your opponent is. For example, even if you are a lower division team and losing all your games, if Man Utd came to town for a cup tie, you would have a full house.

On top of this, the ticket prices you set for your home games can also affect the size of the crowd. It also works in Play Now mode which they have renamed to Kick-Off. So if you play a game like Chelsea vs Barnsley at Stamford Bridge, you won't get a full house.

  • New Teams and Leagues
FIFA 06 will have all of the same leagues as FIFA 2005, along with some additions. The Polish Ekstraklasa has been added, along with Fenerbahce, Shakhtar Donetsk and two South African teams... Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

There is also a new World League which has two teams in it, the Classic XI (as announced in a previous news post) and a World XI, which contains the top players from today's game. EA stressed that this team can be completely changed, meaning you can make your own World XI if you do not agree with EA's selections.

  • Turkish League not in game
In other FIFA 06 news, there have been some fake screenshots circulating that were meant to prove that the Turkish League was in FIFA 06. EA have confirmed that these screenshots are fakes. The only additional complete league that is being added is the Polish Ekstraklasa.

Keep checking back here for all the very latest FIFA 06 news.

English Premier League: Wigan 0 Chelsea 1

English Premier League: Wigan 0 Chelsea 1Despite the last gasp win at Wigan, José Mourinho was clearly not a happy man.

Single goal victories were not uncommon during the Championship win but this one was different. You did not need to be a mind reader to tell that the performance disappointed the Chelsea manager in a way not seen since he arrived in England.

If somebody tried to understand our system today they wouldn’t have been able to because there was no system,” he reflected.

The left winger was playing inside, the right winger was playing inside, the striker was playing on the left, the midfielders were playing in the same line, nobody playing in different lines. It was too bad to be true.

The second-half we improved from the first minute. We played with three at the back which was a risky situation but we had to do it. The goal was magnificent, incredible, but I don’t think we deserved the three points.”

I blame myself, I blame them, I blame everybody else. We are in the same boat, Champions together, losing together, playing bad together and improving together and I think today was a good lesson for us. Normally you lose matches to wake up. Today we have the chance to wake up without losing a match.

Manchester United News

Manchester United NewsOur new Official Sweetpatch Reporter for Manchester United, KakZ, brings us his first update today. He looks at the mid-week match plus some transfer rumours.

Manchester United v Debrecen
Ji-Sung Park Made his official premiership campaign debut for Manchester United as the reds cruised past Debrecen with a 3-0 victory to kick-start their 2005-06 premiership campaign. Wayne Rooney started the scoring in the 8th minute when the Debrecen defence could not clear the ball off the D. He also setup the other 2 goals, which were scored by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo respectively.

Transfer Rumours
There is still speculation that Michael Owen may join Manchester united after the England attacker refused a move to Newcastle United after saying that he wanted to play in the Champions League. Owen is also reported to be chased by former club Liverpool. But he relies on Sir Alex to rescue him from Madrid, where he is said to be the 5th striker after the arrival of Julio Baptista and Robihno.

Kleberson completed his move to Turkish club Besiktas after being a flop at Old Trafford.

More Man U news coming soon.

Coca-Cola League 2 Review

Official Sweetpatch Reporter for the Coa-Cola League 2, Sam Bradley, brings us a summary of all the action from last weekend's matches: Coca-Cola League 2 Review
Barnet 1
Bristol Rovers 1
A late effort from Junior Agogo put pain to Barnet’s return to the football league after a 4 year absence. Barnet midfielder Richard Graham gave the Bees the lead in the 77th minute, but poor defending cost Barnet 2 points as Agogo popped up to get on the end of an inviting cross from Ryan Williams.
Cheltenham 2
Bury 1
Bury’s inability to defend high balls cost them the game as Cheltenham stuck to a very direct style of play. The Robins took the lead after 9 minutes when a backpass was hit short by a Bury defender and Kayodi Odejayi latched onto the end of it to slot past the hapless Bury keeper. The Shakers replied 10 minutes after though as new signing Allan Smart assisted midfielder Dwayne Mattis who side footed past Chelt’s keeper Higgs. It was to be the home teams day though as Craig Armstrong making his debut scored the winning goal in the 74th minute to give the home team all 3 points.
Grimsby 1
Oxford 1
Oxford Utd grabbed a late equaliser to give the Grimsby fans heartache as Chris Hargreaves headed in to secure a point against his former club. The Mariners took the lead on the 62nd minute when Tony Crane met with the ball from a corner. Grimsby looked to secure all 3 points but Oxford stole them with an 88th minute equaliser.
L Orient  2
Macclesfield 1
Abysmal defending cost Macclesfield the game as 2 lapses in defence cost them 2 goals. The O’s scored the fastest goal of the afternoon as debutant Joe Keith managed to get the ball in the net after a 8 man goal mouth scramble. The Silkmen got an equaliser through tireless midfielder Paul Harsley as he swung the ball round the keeper from 15 yards. But Macc would be starting their season with a loss as Danny Swailes miss hit a back pass in which substitute Efe Echanomi got on the end of to take round the keeper, giving him an open net, the striker would then stop the ball on the line much to the annoyance of the Macc faithful and then cheekily roll the ball over the line, this was then followed by 7 backflips and a booking for unprofessional behaviour (Lua Lua would be proud).
Lincoln 1
Northampton 1
This match ended in a stalemate as both these teams who reached the playoffs last season scored a goal each. Pedj Bojic gave the away side the lead on 53 minutes with a superb solo run before shooting from 20 yards leaving the keeper with no chance. But the Imps equalised 10 minutes later as Gary Birch scored on his debut to give Lincoln a share of the spoils.
Peterborough  0
Chester 1
Peterborough’s return to League 2 started with a loss as Keith Curle’s first game in charge of Chester started with a win. Stuart Drummond pounced onto a rebound, meaning Chester would return to Cheshire with 3 points.
Rushden & Diamonds 1
Darlington 1
Rushden responded almost immediately to a Clyde Wijnhard penalty as David Bell hit a low shot past the keeper on the 60th minute. The Quakers had took the lead after referee Trevor Parkes pointed to the spot for Neil McCafferty’s handball.

Shrewsbury  0
Rochdale 1

Grant Holt’s 15th minute strike proved the winner at the Gay Meadow to give ‘Dale an away win. Holt held the ball up well in the box and sneaked the ball into the near post under the body of Shrews’ keeper Joe Hart.
Stockport 2
Mansfield 2
Stockport came from 2 goals down to earn a point as new signing Jermaine Easter scored 2 goals on his debut for the Hatters. Mansfield whose manager Carlton Palmer made his return to Edgeley Park after being sacked by Stockport 2 seasons ago took the lead in the 22nd minute when Stephen Dawson fired a low shot past the keeper. The Stags then doubled their lead 11 minutes later through striker Adam Birchall. Stockport began their fightback when Jermaine Easter curled a shot past the Mansfield keeper 3 minutes after half time. He then finished the fightback on the 60th minute when he headed home from close range.
Torquay 0
Notts County 0
Neither team could break the deadlock as Torquay Utd made their return back down to League after their short stay in League 1. Notts keeper Kevin Pilkington was the man who would be the star of the show after making a string of superb saves to keep Torquay at bay. Torquay’s frustration to break the deadlock blew over as Tony Bedeau was sent off with 6 minutes to go for making a dangerous 2 footed challenge on Steve Scoffham.
Wrexham 2
Boston 0
The Dragons started their campaign to return to League 1 with a win over promotion hopefuls Boston Utd. Mark Jones hit a superb 25 yard strike on the 23rd minute leaving Pilgrim’s keeper Nathan Abbey to pick the ball out of the net. New signing Lee Roche wrapped up the win 7 minutes from time when he slipped the ball past the keeper capping off a good counter attack. Boston’s big signings Julian Joachim and Noel Whelan just managed 1 shot on goal between them all afternoon.
Wycombe 1
Carlisle 1
Conference playoff winners Carlisle held Wycombe to a draw and left the Causeway Stadium with a hard earned point. Carlisle took the lead against the run of play when Derek Holmes hit a cross/shot from 20 yards past Frank Talia. Wycombe responded on the 37th minute when debutant Tommy Mooney scored an already goal of the season contender curling with his left foot over the Carlisle keeper. Wycombe had a barrage of attacks but were denied by the woodwork numerous times, meaning they had to settle for a point.

World Cyber Games 2005 - Edinburgh Qualifier

WCG 2005 - Edinburgh QualifierWe are delighted to finally confirm that the WCG qualifiers for the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival have been scheduled as follows:

Saturday August 13th
17.30 – FIFA Soccer 2005 (PC)

Sunday August 14th
15.00 – FIFA Soccer 2005 (PC)

Due to the unique nature of the event they will be running the qualifiers as follows:

  • On each day Registration will take place at the times specified above at the WCG stand. Those players wishing to participate in the qualifier must therefore purchase a ticket for the block of the event that starts at that time on the appropriate day.
  • Registrations will last for 20-30 minutes, after which the competition will commence with the winners of their games able to remain in the event hall until they are knocked out of the competition, not requiring additional ticket purchases should the qualification games run into the next event time-slot. The competition will most likely be single-elimination but if you are knocked out of the event on the first day you will be able to attend for the second day to try again. The winners of each day for each game will qualify for an all-expenses paid trip to the UK Finals which will be held at Samsungs HQ in Surrey during the Autumn. In addition to this the winner on each day will receive a Samsung donated prize, details of which will be confirmed on the day of the event.
  • The WCG stand at the event will be open from Wednesday August 10th and players are more than welcome to come along and try out the tournament machines that shall be running. If you are intending to compete I would thoroughly recommend you do come along to one of the days before the qualification proper as it may take some adjustment to playing on a stunning 42” Samsung plasma television or on a PC that is not your own.
  • They will be giving out further details of the other qualifying methods for the UK Finals after the Edinburgh event is completed. They can confirm that there will be a mixture of both LAN and Online qualifying and it would be in your best interests to make an effort to attend this week as they are not as likely to feature in other LAN events.

Get yourself along to the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival this week to gain your qualification to the World Cyber Games 2005.

Community Shield: Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

Community Shield: Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1 Two Didier Drogba goals of the highest quality won Chelsea their third Charity/Community Shield trophy.

  • 1-0: It took just seven minutes for Chelsea to take the lead and Drogba to prove what a handful he is going to be for opposing defences this season. It was del Horno’s chip into the area that set Drogba up. He took the ball on his chest, turning, and held off Senderos before lobbing Lehmann who was helpless. Good ball, great finish.
  • 2-0: With 56 minutes gone Mourinho was lining up his substitutes when Terry imperiously won the ball and fed it to Lampard. His chip upfield was won by Gudjohnsen which set Drogba away. The striker raced through, couldn't find the shot and was blocked by Lehmann, but he won the ball back aggressively and despite the attentions of Senderos turned and shot into the net past Touré on the line. Brilliant!
  • 2-1: Ljungberg’s low cross was sliced by Tiago as he tried to clear and the ball was dispatched by Flamini into the corner of Cech’s net.

Coca-Cola Championship Review

Following this weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action below: Barclays Coca-Cola Championship Review
Crewe 2
Burnley 1
A threadbare Burnley squad slipped to a late 2-1 defeat at Crewe Alexandra after David Vaughan netted an 89th minute winner. Crewe had taken the lead on 44 minutes through Billy Jones before Gifton Noel-Williams scored on his Clarets debut midway through the second half.
C Palace 1
Luton 2
Luton sprang a shock at Selhurst Park as they took the lead just before half time through Steve Howard's header, after Kevin Nicholls had earlier missed a penalty for the visitors. Palace's prolific striker Andy Johnson celebrated signing a new contract by heading in the equaliser on 52 minutes but Ahmet Brkovic tapped in a winner for The Hatters on 79 minutes.
Derby 1
Brighton 1
The goals came early at Pride Park as Paul Peschisolido's 12th minute goal for Derby County cancelled out Dean Hammond's seventh minute opener for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Hull 0
QPR 0
Hull City's first game at Championship level in over a decade ended in stalemate after a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers at The KC Stadium.
Ipswich 1
Cardiff 0
Ipswich took time to break down Cardiff City at Portman Road but Nicky Forster's goal on his debut on 64 minutes earned Joe Royle's men the points.
Norwich 1
Coventry 1
Dean Ashton nodded Norwich into the lead against Coventry on 21 minutes but Dele Adebola grabbed a point for The Sky Blues on 64 minutes.
Reading 1
Plymouth 2
Leroy Lita scored on his Reading debut but a last minute winner from Nick Chadwick handed Plymouth Argyle the points at The Madejski Stadium after Micky Evans had scored on 21 minutes.
Sheff United 4
Leicester 1
Sheffield United started the season with a flattering 4-1 victory over Leicester City at Bramall Lane. Andy Gray's penalty gave The Blades a half-time lead before David Connolly drew Leicester level early in the second period. The hosts scored three times in the last 10 minutes to pick up an opening-day win with Steve Kabba, with a penalty, Paul Ifill and Leigh Bromby netting the goals.

Southampton 0
Wolves 0

The other team relegated from The Premiership - Southampton - had Claus Lundekvam sent off as they drew 0-0 at home to Wolves.
Stoke 0
Sheff Wed  0
League One play-off winners Sheffield Wednesday picked up a point on their return to The Championship after Stoke City shot themselves in the foot at The Britannia Stadium. Stoke defender Gerry Taggart was sent off on 12 minutes for hacking down Leon Best while Kevin Harper blazed a second half penalty over the bar after Carl Hoefkens had been felled.
Watford 1
Preston 2
Last season's beaten play-off finalists Preston North End made a successful start to the new campaign with a 2-1 triumph at Watford. Darius Henderson marked his Watford debut by scoring the first goal of the game on nine minutes but David Nugent and Dickson Etuhu scored before the interval to earn Preston an away win.

Coca-Cola League 1 Preview

Coca-Cola Championship PreviewAs League 1 also kicks off today we take a look at the runners and riders (extracts taken from Chris Kamara's preview at Sky Sports.com).

  • I don't think there is any danger of Nottingham Forest finding themselves stuck in mid-table obscurity as long as they stick with Gary Megson. They have done their phase of chopping and changing managers and it is time for some stability.
  • With Marcus Stewart and Michael Bridges up front, Bristol City have a very decent strike-force, but what League one club can afford to let Leroy Lita go to Reading, Danny Coles go to Hull City, Tom Doherty go to QPR and Joe Anyinsah go to Preston?
  • Martin Allen has been shrewd bringing Lloyd Owusu and Paul Brooker to Brentford on free transfers and perhaps we will see the best of Lloyd now that he is back where he started his career so promisingly.
  • At Tranmere, Brian Little has sold Ryan Taylor and that has eased all the financial problems at the club and given them stability for the season ahead.
  • I'm expecting Huddersfield to do alright, they have brought in some experience to go with their youngsters. And Martin McIntosh, who they brought in from Rotherham, should be good a useful addition.
  • I was also backing Oldham to do well under Ronnie Moore, but they have suffered a massive blow by losing Luke Beckett to injury and that could kiss by to their promotion hopes.
  • Doncaster could be the dark horses of the division. By bringing in Sean Thornton, David Penney has bought himself someone who should be playing in the Championship at the very least.
  • At Hartlepool , Martin Scott has made some good signings. Former Sunderland players Michael Proctor, who was at Rotherham, and Darren Williams, who came from Cardiff, are getting back to the surroundings they are comfortable with and they should do okay.
  • But Neale Cooper, who lost his job to Martin Scott and is now at Gillingham, finds himself in a tricky situation. Like Brian Tinnion he has lost many of his most talented players and may struggle to compensate for it.
  • I fancy newly-promoted Yeovil to be up there because of the quality of their football. Gary Johnson had a couple of clubs knocking on his door, but he has chosen to stay at Huish Park until he feels he has taken Yeovil as far as he thinks he possibly can.
  • At the opposite end of the scale Brian Laws has taken Scunthorpe up, but he's lost more players than he has been able to bring in, and Southend need to bring some players in soon because they've hardly signed anyone yet.

Enjoy League 1 with us here during the 2005/06 season and check out Kammy's full preview by clicking here.

Coca-Cola Championship Preview

Coca-Cola Championship PreviewAs the Championship kicks off today we take a look at the runners and riders (extracts taken from Chris Kamara's preview at Sky Sports.com).

The Championship looks like it is going to be the most competitive it has been for years and we check out why:

  • Expect Harry to do a lot more business at Southampton before the end of August and bring in the players that he needs to make a decent challenge.
  • From about Christmas last season, Norwich City were planning to keep what they have got to help them bounce straight back. They have managed to keep players like Dean Ashton and Robert Green and must be feeling confident.
  • As for Crystal Palace, what a bonus it was to keep Andy Johnson! He scored 21 goals the last time he was playing in the division and you have to fancy him to repeat that and keep Palace in the top pack.
  • Leeds have made some great signings in Robbie Blake, Rob Hulse, Dan Harding and Steve Stone, and they should do well.
  • Glenn Hoddle has done really well at Wolves. He has instilled the belief that they can't be beaten, now he needs to convince them that the will win matches because they cannot afford to draw as many as they did last year.
  • You don't know how Leicester are going to do because Craig Levein and his signings know a bit more about the division.
  • But Ipswich - who really missed the opportunity to go up last season - have lost too many players for me. I know Joe Royle is shrewd and clever but what can you do when you lose the likes of Shefki Kuqi, Darren Bent and Tommy Miller?
  • Sheffield United will be up there and this time it really is one last season for Neil Warnock! It's his sixth year at Brammall Lane and unless he gets them promoted or beaten in the play-off final, I really don't think they will give him any more time.
  • Steve Coppell's Reading just missed out on the play-offs last season. Having gone out and spent £1million to bring England U21 striker Leroy Lita in this summer, you would expect them to do well in the coming year too.
  • It will be very hard for Derby and Preston to emulate what they achieved last term.
  • Of the promoted sides, you have to fancy Hull. There are only a couple of teams in the division with the financial clout that Hull have. And Peter Taylor, with his experience of promotions, will be invaluable. The problem they are going to have is that they are going to lose more games at the Kingston Communications Stadium than ever before.

Enjoy the Championship with us here during the 2005/06 season and check out Kammy's full preview by clicking here.

FIFA 06: Road to the World Cup Video

FIFA 06: Road to the World Cup VideoDan over at Breamster.com has sourced a great video which shows EA Sports FIFA 06 title - "Road to the World Cup" for the Xbox 360.

Some footage has already been seen, from the E3 compilation a few months back, but this video "fills the gaps", by showing a good few minutes of Brazil vs England.

It highlights the visual quality and gameplay, as well as the players realism and actions and rich detail of the stadiums and environment. Not to mention Sven Goran Ericsson in full likeness celebrating an England goal!

FIFA 06 Update

FIFA 06 UpdateWe have picked up on a few bits of FIFA 06 gossip around the web:

  • EA Sports has confirmed that they will release new info on FIFA 06 on August 8th. After a long wait we will start to know everything about this mysterious game, like new screenshots or possibly the fact sheet. (Mundo FIFA)
  • On the last issue of "Jeux Video Magazine", it was confirmed that there will be lots of unlockables, which will keep us entertained for hours. One of them will be the historic "FIFA International Soccer", a.k.a. FIFA 94 (on the MegaDrive), which was the first game in the FIFA series. This is almost confirmed, as a week ago in "Play2Mania" magazine from Spain something similar was published. (Mundo FIFA)
  • Career Mode is far better than last year's edition, as now it had the support from LFP Manager series creators. (Mundo FIFA)

World Series Trophy: Chelsea 1 AC Milan 1

World Series Trophy: Chelsea 1 AC Milan 1Chelsea lifted the World Series trophy after a 1-1 draw with Milan at Giants Stadium in New York.

The Blues beat their Italian opponents 1-0 last week but had to settle for a draw after Rui Costa cancelled out Didier Drogba's goal in the second half.

  • 1-0: Drogba, who was one of the half time substitutes, broke the deadlock on 64 minutes when he powered into the penalty area before finishing delicately.
  • 1-1: The Rossoneri nicked an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining after Rui Costa picked up a corner at the far post, shuffled towards the edge of the penalty area and curled a delightful shot inside the upright.

In the closing moments, Chelsea could have snatched the win after clever work from Drogba but Frank Lampard scooped his attempt over the bar.
