Rivaldo keen on Chelsea switch

Visit Chelsea mini siteFormer World Footballer of the Year Rivaldo has issued a 'come and get me' plea to Chelsea.

The Brazil star parted company with AC Milan last week and would now like to rebuild his career at Stamford Bridge. Rivaldo told the Sunday Herald:

"At Chelsea it would be very easy for me to fit in quickly because there are already so many stars, some of whom I know directly. Perhaps that would make it the easiest choice for me because if I have good partners who know how I play then I could, literally, guarantee success. So Chelsea is interesting to me but I cannot say more specifically at the moment - I have to take in other factors."

"However, I think that England is the logical destination for me because I've had so many offers from there that it would be the easiest place to go and succeed."

"I'm going to have a close look now at four or five of the 12 strong proposals from France, England, Spain and Brazil which I have received since the summer and then I will choose which one suits me best. I want to sort it out, and play, as soon as possible, but then again I do not want to make a decision without allowing proper time to think it over."

"If you would have asked me a few years ago about moving to England I probably would have answered `I don't fancy it'. But now I am older and the teams there can know what to expect from me - plus I think that at my stage in my career I believe I could fit in."

'The Puma' Wants New Roma Deal

Visit Roma mini siteBrazilian midfielder Emerson says he wants to sign a new contract with the club.

"I want this whole situation to be sorted out. I want to know what my future holds," he said.

"I thank Chelsea for their interest but I'm only thinking about Roma. I feared that the club would sell me for economical reasons but that didn't happen.

"I love this place and I feel at home. If it was up to me I would sign a new deal right now."

The stumbling block is said to be the payer's increase in wages.

Osim reign ended

Visit NK Zeljeznicar mini siteUEFA Cup contenders NK Željeznicar have sacked coach Amar Osim two days after their 2-0 first round first-leg defeat at Heart of Midlothian FC.

Four-game losing streak
The result meant the Bosnia-Herzegovnian Cup holders had lost four games in a row. That run included two losses in the league and their exit from the cup they won last season as they were defeated by second division side FK Kozara.

Odovic in charge
Osim's assistant Kemal Alispahic had agreed to take over but then changed his mind, club president Sabahudin Zujo said on Friday. "Second assistant coach Milomir Odovic is an employee of the club and he will lead the team until we find a proper solution," Zujo said.

Hearts return
Željeznicar, who lie 12th in the Bosnia-Herzegovnian Premier League, welcome Scottish side Hearts to Sarajevo for the return leg on 15 October.

Chivu Is Finally Roma's Romanian

Visit Roma mini siteThe official AS Roma website announced the Serie A club sealed off the permanent move of defender Cristian Chivu from Dutch giants Ajax.

Therefore the promise made by chairman Franco Sensi on Wednesday, in which he said Roma would pay the remaining 12.5 million Euros sum Roma owned Ajax for Chivu in cash, was maintained.

It is still unclear whether Roma received a discount from the Dutch side for preferring to pay the 12.5 million Euros immediately instead of dishing out the sum over a longer period of time, a solution that needed bank guarantees.

Until today's money transfer, Chivu was on a four month loan at Roma as the Giallorossi had been unable to offer these guarantees before the transfer window closed on August 31st.

Weekend Preview - Chelsea v Aston Villa

Visit Chelsea mini sitePreparing to face Chelsea must be a tough dilemma for Barclaycard Premiership managers these days. Will it be Hernan Crespo, Adrian Mutu, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink or Eidur Gudjohnsen pairing up in attack? How about midfield, will Joe Cole get near the starting line-up? Will Juan Veron be used or rested? Who will come on when Damien Duff is substituted? All of these questions will be going through David O'Leary's head ahead of Aston Villa's humbling trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Whether or not it will be a humbling result remains to be seen, but confidence is at an all-time high at Chelsea after their 5-0 drubbing of Wolves, and Claudio Ranieri doesn't even seem to have many injuries to stretch his ever-expandable squad. For O'Leary it will be a painful reminder of when he seemed to have never-ending funds at Elland Road, though Chelsea's backing is rather more concrete, not that Ranieri does not have any problems.

"We have a lot of games and I know some players are unhappy and are suffering a lot, but I can think only about Chelsea," he said. "I have spoken with my players and they have understood everything. I don't necessarily want players to be happy if they don't play, I want intelligent players. They must think that although they don't play in this match, they could have an opportunity in the next game. This is my philosophy."

Villa may be on the road to recovery under O'Leary, but there is still a long way to go, and not everyone can make the giant leaps and bounds that Chelsea have managed in the last few months. The home fans will be looking for yet more evidence of that growing gulf on Saturday.

Ze Roberto Wants Roma-Report

Visit Roma mini siteAccording to reports coming out of Germany, Bayern Munich star Ze Roberto could join Serie A giants AS Roma at the end of this season.

It seems that the Brazlian is having problems agreeing to a new contract with the German club, hence his desire to move abroad.

It must be said Roma already have Vincent Candela in the left wing position, even though the Frenchman is less of an offensive player than the Brazilian.

Real Madrid Between Roma And Davids

Visit Roma mini siteIt seems that Edgar Davids' move from Juventus to AS Roma is just months away now. The Giallorossi president Franco Sensi announced that the Dutchman will be joining next summer, but before singing the victory chant, Roma should beware. Real Madrid have the financial clout and player appeal in order to convince the former Milan man to join them, and not Roma, on a free transfer next summer. Following the departure of Claude Makelele, Davids is just the type of player who would be welcomed at the Bernabeu.

"Davids will wear yellow and red," said Sensi of the Dutchman who is out of contract this summer. "He will be one of us in June."

He also spoke of new signing Cristian Chivu, saying that within four days the club will pay the entire fee to Ajax, all in cash, with no need of a bank guarantee.

And on his current situation with the coach: "I have a great relationship with Capello, we cancelled the old things. We must look ahead now."

He added thatthere are teams that are better than Roma (Man Utd, Real, Chelsea) but that the Giallorossi are as strong as Juve.

That's rich!

Visit Chelsea mini siteSometimes cliches are true. 'The rich get richer' is a popular one. And if news out this morning is confirmed, then our very own Roman Abramovich is about to get richer, by the tune of about $2.5bn. Not bad for a morning's work, I'm sure you'll agree.

Russia's second richest man is about to get richer - probably getting his wallet ready for the January sales some might say - according to Russian news agencies. It looks as though Roman has sold half of his stake in OAO Russian Aluminium (or aluminium as the Septics would say) to his business partner and Rusal Chief Exec, Oleg Deripaska, Russia's seventh richest man. Rusal is the world's second largest aluminium producer.

Although the value of this stake is uncertain, it is estimated that it should fetch in the region of about $2.5bn to $3bn. Nice.

Already listed by Forbes as the world's 49th wealthiest person this will help consolidate his reputed £3.8bn personal fortune (as listed by the Sunday Times). He is still one of the major shareholders in Sibneft -which after the merger with Yukos oil- will become the world's 4th largest oil company. This is just one of the many business interests the Russian oligarch has.

Although the money he has spent on Chelsea is substantial by anyone's standards (close to £300m on acquiring almost all the shares in the club, paying off the debt, and scouring the continent for players - with more likely to come) it is but small change to the big man, especially when you look at the figures mentioned above. The man wants Chelsea to be a success both at home and in Europe. And with this sort of money involved , who knows what might happen?

Happy 4th Birthday to us

SweetpatchToday sees us celebrate the 4th birthday of the FIFA-MRA website! During this time the site has had 3 designs and moved to the current Sweetpatch concept in November 2001.

We have reproduced below the very first article ever to appear on the website on 22nd September 1999:

“Hi, my name is David Witts (Wittser) and I live in Old Polzeath, Cornwall in the UK. The idea for this utility first arose when I had an enforced break from work recently and spent more time online playing games of FIFA99. It became obvious that a utility such as this could provide part of the FIFA99 community with a facility which was lacking currently, i.e. the ability to easily administer multiple rosters, kits, etc... within one version of the game.

It is envisaged that this utility will provide a facility that is required by both players and league managers of the FIFA series. Please feel free to pass constructive comments/criticism to myself via e-mail. Your comments are valuable to the successful development of this utility.

May I also take this opportunity to thank all the people on the right who have to date provided me with encouragement, inspiration, ideas and assistance.

(A Word97 version of the report is also available for download).”

You can check out all the news ever posted at the site by visiting our News Archive.

We hope you enjoy the next 4 years here with us as the Sweetpatch story continues and thanks for all your support over the past 4 years.

Wolves 0 Chelsea 5

Visit Chelsea mini sitePace, power and precision overwhelmed the home side at Molineux as a 5-0 win, including first goals for Crespo and Duff, put the Blues top of the League, albeit perhaps for just 24 hours.

Poor Wolves had their first shot on target deep into the second half in a game Chelsea controlled completely from start to finish. If you want to know what £111m buys you, the evidence was here to see against pitiful Wanderers: class in very department. And, finally, a League clean sheet.

Both first half goals were superb examples of the angular, incisive build-ups we’ve started to enjoy this season. Gudjohnsen fed Hasselbaink, who held the ball strongly and laid it sideways to Lampard just outside the box. The England international jinked sideways for room and drove home with his left foot.

William Gallas, magisterial in the centre in Marcel Desailly’s absence, started a move that led to Duff, who waited cleverly, then fed Hasselbaink on the shoulder of Craddock, and Jimmy’s left-foot drive beat Oakes all ends up.

Makelele put in Gudjohnsen down the left. He rounded Irwin easily and slid the ball sideways for Duff to stroke home his first Chelsea goal.

Now Hernan Crespo replaced Hasselbaink. Wolves fans clapped appreciatively. But not for long, as with his first touch he coldly thrashed home Duff’s driven cross into the box from 10 yards. It is his first goal for Chelsea, but more was to follow.

His second, and Chelsea’s fifth, came after excellent work down the right by Joe Cole. The Argentinian let the midfielder’s pass ball curl towards his body on the edge of the box and stroked it home with his right foot.

We are top of the league!” sang the 3,000 Chelsea fans amongst new Molineux’s biggest ever crowd of 29,208.

Capello: We Will Be Main Players In The Scudetto Race

Visit Roma mini siteAfter seeing his side thrash Brescia 5-0, AS Roma coach Fabio Capello was in positive mood for the season ahead.

"This year Roma will be main players in the Scudetto race and we'll just have to see if the other big teams can be better," he said.

"Today's game was quite a spectacle with quality and pace throughout. Cristian Chivu's free kick was splendid and he was very generous to give John Carew the penalty. It was important that the new arrivals had a good start.

"What has changed from last season is our attitude and a better fitness schedule. With that trident firing on all cylinders, they become nigh on unstoppable."

Zanetti Wants AS Roma Return

Visit Roma mini siteReports from Italy are suggesting Cristiano Zanetti met up with Roma sports director Baldini during the Azzurri's trip at Serbia & Montenegro.

It appears Zanetti expressed his desire to return to AS Roma, the club with which he won the 2000/2001 Scudetto with, as he doesn't feel backed by Inter boss Hector Cuper anymore.

When the Giallorossi sold Zanetti to Inter right after they won the Italian title, Fabio Capello was furious with his chairman Franco Sensi.

Therefore, the Roma boss would be extremely glad to have Zanetti in his ranks once again.

Giggs warning for Chelsea big spenders

Visit Chelsea mini siteManchester United winger Ryan Giggs believes Chelsea's 111 million pound investment in new players will not secure this year's English Premiership.

Giggs, who has won eight championship medals in past 11 seasons, has been impressed with the quality of Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri's summer signings.

But he added: "With Chelsea you don't know what you are going to get. They have so much quality but they have all got to gel, whereas Arsenal and ourselves have got the nucleus of teams that we have had for the last three or four years, which is always important.

"It does make a difference when you have won a title - you know what it takes, you have got to scrape points here and there. It can take a couple of years for a team to gel but, if you have still got the nucleus - and Chelsea have the backbone of the team with Lampard, Terry, Desailly and Cudicini, who is excellent - you can improve."

Giggs is confident United will retain their title and thinks the biggest challenge will again come from Arsenal.

"I think there is a challenge for Arsenal this season. When you do lose a title, especially with the lead they had and with the football they were playing earlier in the season, they probably felt they deserved it."

FIFA 2004 in Focus - Off The Ball ™ Control

As we continue our in depth focus on FIFA 2004's key features, today we check out Off The Ball™ Control.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

There are players whose contribution to the team is as great off the ball as it is on it. Whose skills without the ball are as awesome as everything they do with it.

  • Like Ronaldinho, reading the game from midfield. Directing his team-mates' moves. Picking out the player who has made the most prescient run off the ball. And delivering the perfect pass to take the opposition apart.
  • Like Del Piero, fighting for every inch of turf. Making run after run into opposition territory, and being jostled and harassed for his pains. Waiting for that rare chance to receive the ball. And bury it.
  • Like Thierry Henry, tearing into space off the ball. Running defenders ragged. Calling for the ball so that his team-mates know he's open. And eating it up when it's played into space ahead of him.

These are the players who have inspired the latest version of the world's best-selling football simulation, FIFA Football 2004. And inspired EA to develop Off The Ball™ Control so that you can play like them.

Off The Ball™ Control lets you control the man on the ball and the men off it. Timing runs. Anticipating moves. Positioning players. Making FIFA Football 2004 the complete football simulation. This is a feature I am certainly looking forward to in FIFA 2004.

Sparta Prague 0 Chelsea 1

Visit Chelsea mini siteWilliam Gallas celebrated his first start of the season with a winning goal six minutes from time, his first Champions League goal since scoring for Marseille against Manchester United in 1999.

The first-half was not of the quality that people have come to expect from Champions League football. Chelsea settled first but didn’t maintain rhythm, and the referee was the most active participant.

Both sides were giving the ball away too much, committing too many fouls and, in Chelsea’s case, getting caught offside too often. Mutu forced Sparta to give the ball away on 11 minutes, tackling back on midfielder Kovac, and Emmanuel Petit’s volleyed pass found Hernan Crespo who hit a diagonal left foot volley which Blazek held athletically at his near post. That got the away following singing the Argentine’s name.

Right on half-time Kovac rose to a long Poborsky cross and headed just wide of the near post – a long cross causing problems again. Nil-nil was a justifiable interval score.

Sparta worked hard but got few people forward. Chelsea flicked and touched, twisted and spurted, and now with Lampard and Duff drove forward too.

Chelsea pushed on more and more and Sparta were only countering, mostly defending. In the end the long awaited goal came six minutes from time. Geremi had got round the back of the Sparta defence and won a corner. Duff took it and it was cleared back to him, he forced the room to cross again, coming inside on his left, Hasselbaink flicked it on and Gallas swept it in at the far post, a flashing finish.

It wasn’t a great performance, but as the Chelsea choir sang as the teams took to the pitch: “Chelsea are back, Chelsea are back.

Ranieri takes 21 players to Prague

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri has selected a squad of 21 players who have flown to Prague for our first UEFA Champions League group game away to Sparta.

The 21 are: Cudicini, Ambrosio, Melchiot, Johnson, Terry, Desailly, Gallas, Babayaro, Bridge, Gronkjaer, Geremi, Lampard, Petit, Makelele, Veron, Duff, Cole, Hasselbaink, Mutu, Crespo and Gudjohnsen.

There are no injuries in the camp. Geremi is not suspended for European games.

Sparta were champions of the Czech Republic for the eighth time in ten years last season and have Karel Poborsky in their team and in top form. In the Champions League qualifier they beat Vardar of Macedonia 3-2 away, Poborsky getting a last minute winner, and drew 2-2 at home.

Also on the books is former West Ham Slovakian defender Valdimir Labant, brother of the MSK Zilina centre-back. Sparta’s goalkeeping coach is the former QPR goalkeeper Jan Stejskal.

Their disappointing domestic start to their season continued on Saturday when, watched by Claudio Ranieri’s assistant Angelo Antenucci, they lost 2-0 away to Slovan Liberic and dropped to seventh place. Antenucci also saw them draw 0-0 at home to Slavia Prague a fortnight earlier.

It's Mu-Two as Chelsea win again

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea boss Claudio Ranieri turned up the heat on Tottenham counterpart Glenn Hoddle as his star-studded team came from behind to extend their 13-year unbeaten run in the league to 27 matches with a 4-2 win over their local rivals.

In contrast, victory for the Blues at Stamford Bridge eased some of the pressure continually associated with Ranieri, who has had to endure the likes of Sven-Goran Eriksson, Sir Alex Ferguson and Graeme Souness all being touted as his possible successor.

But it was Spurs who made the brighter start and they deservedly took the lead through Frederic Kanoute after 24 minutes. It lasted just 10 minutes before Frank Lampard headed the equaliser and then Adrian Mutu turned the game around by giving Chelsea the lead three minutes later, and then sealing the victory after 75 minutes with his second goal.

But Spurs were given new hope when a long throw fell for Dean Richards who turned and sent a shot against the post, but Kanoute pounced to whip the ball into the net for his second goal.

However, the last word went to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as two minutes into injury-time he met a low cross from Babayaro to steer the ball past Keller to seal the points.

Defeat for Spurs represented their worst start to a season after five matches since the Premiership was formed more than a decade ago as they have just four points from a possible 15.

FIFA 2004 in Focus - EA Sports Bio

FIFA Football 2004Brand new to FIFA 2004 (and most 2004 EA SPORTS titles), and available on the three major consoles, is the revolutionary EA SPORTS Bio, which allows you to gain cool extras and in-game rewards for the amount of time you spend playing EA SPORTS games. The more EA SPORTS games you buy or rent, the more you play, and the more success you have within the game, the more points you'll accumulate. All you need is a memory card, and you're set.

For instance, if you spend hours upon hours playing Madden NFL 2004, and win most of your games, your success will be reflected in the EA SPORTS Bio screen of FIFA Soccer 2004, where you'll be able to unlock new players, uniforms and teams, depending on how many points you've accumulated.

EA SPORTS Bio works with the game console's memory card to store your gaming information, so that you accumulate points every time you play and each time you log a significant accomplishment. The better you are at one game, the more points you'll earn towards unlocking rewards in other games.

Rewards for the different games are given in a tiered system, so a casual gamer might be able to unlock new cheats, player cards and jerseys, while someone who racks up a ton of points will open up brand new stadiums, teams and even gaming modes. Each game will have its own specific rewards, but they'll all be tied to the EA SPORTS Bio point system.

EA SPORTS Bio will be available for all three major consoles:

  • the Sony PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system,
  • the Microsoft Xbox(tm),
  • and the Nintendo GameCube®.

EA SPORTS Bio will be available in the following games:

  • FIFA Football 2004
  • NBA LIVE 2004
  • Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® 2004
  • NHL® 2004
  • Madden NFL 2004

Point systems and rewards are the same for all three consoles; however, you can't share points across different consoles as the memory cards are different for each one.

Hoddle: Chelsea is the new glamour game

Visit Chelsea mini siteAhead of today's game with Spurs, Glenn Hoddle believes Chelsea has taken over from Manchester United as being the "glamour game" of the season for opposing clubs.

Premiership teams used to see it as their cup final to take on the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Co, but according to Hoddle this summer's Stamford Bridge revolution means things have changed.

Spurs boss Hoddle said: "Chelsea has become the 'glamour' game. Over the years Manchester United has been the glamour game but I think that with the talent at Chelsea now other clubs will see it as a real challenge to go and see if they can upset them."

"There is a lot of expectation on their shoulders now and as Claudio Ranieri has been saying they need a bit of time to gel together, but if you bring together an orchestra of the best musicians in the world and they practice together for the afternoon, they'll be able to go out at the Albert Hall and perform all right."

FIFA 2004 in Focus - EA's plans for an Online Footy Revolution

FIFA Football 2004In a recent interview with Computer and Video Games, EA reveals all about new league additions, online play - and the rivalry with Pro Evolution Soccer.

Brand manager Dan Holman visited C&VG's offices recently to tell them why the latest FIFA game is the best one yet, why a fully online mode gives EA the edge over its rivals - and why EA's online sports series is going to become ever more prevalent in Europe over the coming years.

Some of the key questions and answers are as follows:

  • In 2003 we started using a new game engine, which vastly improved the game from 2002. With 2004, we had more time to improve some of the more basic football elements in that game, stemming from player attributes, so each player has 20 attributes and will play like that said player. Zidane can control the ball much better than a Nationwide league player will control it.
  • So have you used the same amount of detail on lower division teams as you have on the premiership teams, for example?
  • Yeah; as far as we're aware, FIFA 2004 will be the only online console football game this Christmas. So you'll be able to go online, play head to head with anyone else around the world, through the Sony headset you'll be able to speak to these people - you'll be able to enter tournaments, knockout tournaments as well, use chatrooms, all those kinds of things.
  • The big head-to-head in the media's eyes is obviously between your game and Pro Evolution Soccer - do you think the online gives you a very definite edge?

Holman closes: "FIFA 2004 is simply the most authentic, true football simulation on the market, and has the gameplay to match any other football game." Check out this full interview by clicking here.

United chief executive Kenyon to join Chelsea

Visit Chelsea mini siteManchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon is reportedly set to quit the English Premiership champions to join bigspending rivals Chelsea, the London Evening Standard newspaper reported.

Simon Greenberg, the newspaper's assistant editor, said Monday he was "absolutely positive" Kenyon had fixed terms at Stamford Bridge.

Kenyon would thereby be the latest arrival at Chelsea following the takeover of the club by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea have spent more than 111 million pounds (176 million dollars) on players in the pre-season under the oil tycoon supremo at the London club.

Kenyon had been at United for more than three years and was a key figure in persuading manager Alex Ferguson to delay his retirement plans.

He was also instrumental in bringing in Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastian Veron, who is now at Chelsea, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, as well as being intimately involved in David Beckham's transfer to join Real Madrid.

Kenyon was also influential in bringing sponsorship to United as well as raising their profile with foreign tours, particularly in the lucrative market of Asia. He has been a Manchester United fan ever since they became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 at Wembley when he was among the crowd.

Both clubs refused to comment on the matter.

Željeznicar shine in Cyprus

Visit NK Zeljeznicar mini siteNK Željeznicar defeated Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta 3-1 to secure a spot in the first round of the UEFA Cup thanks to a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Early lead
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, the Bosnian-Herzegovnian Cup winners produced an excellent away performance and made the most of virtually all the chances that came their way.

Slotted in
The visitors went ahead in the ninth minute when Almir Gredic slotted in. Goalkeeper Nicos Panagiotoua parried Dzelaludin Muharemovic's low, angled shot but Gredic tucked away the rebound.

Level terms
The home side, however, were soon back on level terms. After good work from former Newcastle United FC player Temur Ketsbaia and Christos Velis, Admir Rašcic deflected a cross into his own net.

Tie secured
But Sanel Jahic ensured parity was short-lived, capitalising on poor defending to make it 2-1 five minutes later. Substitute Emir Hadzic effectively finished the match as a contest with just over 15 minutes to go when he met Muharemovic's cross with a powerful drive.

Latest FIFA Soccer 2004 Hands-On Impressions and Videos

On a recent visit to Electronic Arts' booth at ECTS, Gamespot got the chance to play a match on the PS2 version of FIFA Soccer 2004. The version of the game on display at ECTS is between 60 and 70 percent complete, but it already looks very polished for the most part, and it certainly plays like a reasonably good game of soccer.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

Key observations from playing the game included:

  • FIFA Soccer 2004's visuals looked impressive.
  • The entrance sequence actually went a long way toward creating the feeling that you were about to play in a major real-life match.
  • The emphasis in FIFA Soccer 2004 is firmly on being able to pass the ball between players rather than on being able to make mazy runs from one end of the pitch to the other.
  • Beating the opposing team's keeper didn't prove too difficult.
  • Getting into a scoring position was definitely a challenge.
  • The CPU players are intelligent enough to intercept all but the most well-placed passes.

You can read the full preview over at Gamespot by clicking here. In the meantime, download the 2 great movies Gamespot took at ECTS direct from our FIFA 2004 Download Boutique.

Makelele Deal Completed

Chelsea badgeAfter some last-minute shenanigans, Claude Makelele has officially signed for the blues for 4 years for a fee of £16.5m.

The deal to bring Makelele to Chelsea had threatened to collapse over the weekend, despite Madrid and Chelsea having agreed upon a price, and despite Makelele agreeing on personal terms with Chelsea.

Indeed, both clubs had officially announced the transfer. The point of disagreement was a 15% commission that Claude Makelele (and his people) considered he should have been paid if the transfer went through. 15% of €24 million being €3.6 million we are talking about a fair amount of money.

Welcome aboard Claude and we look forward to you having a very successful 4 years (or more) with us here at Stamford Bridge.

Ranieri: We must kill teams off

Chelsea badgeManager Claudio Ranieri has urged the players to "kill teams off" after dropping our first points of the season following a 2-2 draw with Blackburn at Stamford Bridge.

Rovers twice took the lead with Andy Cole striking first after just 19 seconds and then again on 58 minutes.

Adrian Mutu put us level on the stroke of half-time with his second goal in two appearances. But it was left to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to ensure the Blues a point with his 61st-minute penalty.

Even the introduction of Hernan Crespo as a substitute failed to secure victory for a side who had won all four of our previous games at home and abroad.

Ranieri said: "We gave away two big presents for their goals, but that's football and I hope we have finished doing that now. We showed fantastic character as we were behind twice but we wanted to draw or win. We also showed good football, but we must score goals when we play like that and not just enjoy it. We must kill the opponent."
