UEFA Champions League: Chelsea 3 Porto 1

UEFA Champions League: Chelsea 3 Porto 1Three goals – Alexei Smertin’s first, Didier Drogba’s first at Stamford Bridge and John Terry’s second of the competition – gives Chelsea six Champions League points, but there were three bookings as well.

Gudjohnsen was the creator behind Smertin’s goal after six minutes. A nervous Chelsea start in which Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and William Gallas had all given away possession suddenly switched to powerful confidence when the Icelander dropped deep, midway inside the Porto half and received the ball with his back to goal.

He turned, made space, found Didier Drogba who stabbed the ball wide to Damien Duff. Gudjohnsen had charged on into the area in the inside-left position and volleyed Duff’s chipped pass with the outside of his right foot across goal. Smertin volleyed back across Baía for his first Chelsea notch. The nearest person to him was Lampard. It was an impressive team effort.

Chelsea won two free-kicks wide on the right at the beginning of the second-half. The first Duff put down, Lampard fired in quickly and Drogba powered a header just over. The second Lampard put down, Duff curled in quickly and Drogba knocked in off the top of his head for his third European goal of the season, his fifth Chelsea goal, and his first Stamford Bridge goal.

Carlos Alberto let rip with about his third long-range shot, it deflected off Terry’s head and Cech could only parry – the influential McCarthy hammered in the rebound.

But three minutes later Chelsea restored the two goal lead. Tiago was fouled, Lampard drove in the free-kick from just wide of the area and Terry flew forward to dive and head in. That’s two Champions League goals for him.

Porto couldn't deal with the free-kicks. After a scintillating Gallas run which ended with chasing Derlei crashing into him and being booked, Lampard hit one in from the left and Drogba netted again, but it was disallowed for offside.

Chelsea had scored three goals in Europe for the second game running. Drogba’s fitness is crucial, but José Mourinho’s Chelsea are on the march.

King crowns tribute to Clough

King crowns tribute to CloughA superb last minute goal by Nottingham Forest's Marlon King wrapped up a suitable ending on a day dedicated to remembering former manager Brian Clough, who died of stomach cancer last Monday aged 69.

King's stunning effort rounded off a come from behind 2-1 victory over West Ham and gave Forest their first victory of the season in The Championship.

Former Forest star Marlon Harewood had given the visitors the lead but that was wiped out by a goal from Paul Evans.

The match was preceded by a minute's silence for Clough, and a parade of the trophies he won by some of his best-known players from both Nottingham Forest and Derby County.

Clough guided Derby to their first ever league championship and trumped that by landing two European Cups with unfashionable Nottingham Forest where he moulded seemingly mediocre players into a formidable team.

Clough had been earlier described by his former Forest captain, John McGovern, as one of the greatest teachers in the history of football.

"The last time I stood on this balcony we brought back a very large gold cup from Europe," said McGovern addressing fans of both clubs in the central square in Nottingham. "Brian was a teacher, he tought players how to pass the ball, and told them to keep the ball on the floor and to respect authority. He was one of the greatest teachers of players the game has ever seen."

Middlesbrough 0 Chelsea 1

Middlesbrough 0 Chelsea 1Didier Drogba had one of those afternoons when it appeared as if nothing would go his way - but he still emerged the hero to temporarily fire Chelsea to the top of the Barclays Premiership.

Somehow coach Jose Mourinho's side seem to keep finding a way to win, even though they are playing the kind of football which hardly suggests they will be champions come May.

This was another performance which barely merited the three points, not for a team who have long been tipped to win Premiership and Champions League honours given the vast sums of money lavished upon the squad.

But just Middlesbrough looked like emerging with a creditable point in front of their own fans, Drogba repaid another small slice of his £24million fee with the winner 10 minutes from time.

Chelsea found half a gear late on, and it proved too much for Boro because after Schwarzer had been tested by substitutes Mateja Kezman and Tiago, he was then beaten in the 81st minute.

Drogba made amends for his earlier indiscretions by pulling off the back of the defence in receiving a square Lampard free-kick from wide on the right and sidefooting home from 15 yards for his fourth goal of the season.

These days, one goal is all that is required for Chelsea.

Premiership Preview: Middlesbrough v Chelsea

Premiership Preview: Middlesbrough v ChelseaJosé Mourinho has given his thoughts on Chelsea strikers both past and present as his team heads to Middlesbrough hoping to end a two-game scoreless run in the Premiership.

Waiting at the Riverside Stadium for Chelsea will of course be the unmistakable shape of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a mutual agreement having been reached in the summer between the club and our tenth highest scorer of all-time that the moment was right to move on.

Mourinho said of Hasselbaink: "He was a very good player for Chelsea and he has a history in England that everyone respects. I wish him all the best for the rest of his career but I hope that if he scores on Saturday, the goal doesn't help his team to beat us. I cannot say much more about him. Just that I respect what a good player he was for Chelsea and what good player he still is for Middlesbrough."

The Chelsea manager also revealed that Carlo Cudicini will rejoin the squad for full training on Sunday and could be available as soon as the visit of Porto on Wednesday.

That other Chelsea old boy, Boudewijn Zenden, should be able to play for Middlesbrough this weekend despite fracturing his wrist in their last game.

PC Gamer Review May 2004: "Your hands sweat. It’s a fact of life, you greasy pup. As you play your videogames you exude moisture, as you grip the joypad for dear, extra life… This is the joypad that breathes on you. Even without the fan the Nyko pad is a fine effort. The 12 buttons are more than enough for mustering every action under the sun. Nice. Not just a good gimmick. The AirFlo is a fine joypad. Rating – 83%"

UEFA Champions League: Paris St-Germain 0 Chelsea 3

UEFA Champions League: Paris St-Germain 0 Chelsea 3Two goals for Didier Drogba and a first of the season for John Terry made this a hugely satisfactory opening Champions League day for Chelsea, the only blemish being eight stitches having to be put in Eidur Gudjohnsen’s forehead.

Chelsea played almost a Christmas tree formation with Gudjohnsen and Joe Cole operating behind Drogba.

Chelsea’s lead arrived with our fourth corner after 28 minutes. Cole did well to win it, forcing his way into the area despite two challenges and having his shot deflected. Frank Lampard whipped it in and goalkeeper Lionel Letizi left his line but missed the cross leaving Terry with a simple header.

Right on half-time Cole won the ball off Mendy and fed it through to Kezman who overran it as he raced for goal and shot into Letizi on the edge of the area. But Drogba, who had been offside when Cole passed to Kezman, was first on hand to finish with ease and celebrate in front of the fuming Marseille fans. This was another assured performance from José Mourinho’s men.

Kezman won another free-kick off Hélder with 15 minutes remaining, the defender being lucky to escape a second booking. Gérémi, who had come on for Cole six minutes before, ran past the ball and Drogba curled the free-kick round the wall and in at the near post.

It was a marvelous goal of Zola-like touch from a big man whose touch in open play hadn't always been assured.

After six consecutive away wins in the tournament last season, Chelsea have re-established the pattern for this one. Watch out Europe!

Full match reviews, photographs and videos can be found by visiting the official UEFA Champions League site.

Barclays Premiership Review

Barclays Premiership ReviewAs promised, following the weekend's matches we check out a brief summary of all the action:

  • Steve Wigley earned the first point of his current reign in charge of Southampton as the Saints held Charlton Athletic to a goalless draw at The Valley.
  • Tottenham Hotspur's England trio of Paul Robinson, Ledley King and Jermain Defoe were the central characters at White Hart Lane, but their international colleague Robert Green was unbeatable for Norwich City and prevented the Londoners climbing to third in the Barclays Premiership.
  • Portsmouth moved level on points with Liverpool in the Barclays Premiership after Ricardo Fuller flew in to score his debut goal and kick-start Pompey to victory over Crystal Palace.
  • An extraordinary climax saw Manchester United secure a point in stoppage time at the Reebok Stadium in a 2-2 draw v Bolton.
  • Champions Arsenal could not be knocked out of their stride at Fulham as they extended their lead 0 v 3 at the top of the Barclays Premiership.
  • Liverpool fans have lost a glut of heroes this summer, but now have a new star to idolise in Luis Garcia. He scored in their 3 v 0 victory v West Brom.
  • Mark Viduka would appear to have been worth the wait for Steve McClaren on a day when the Middlesbrough manager could have been denied by one of his previous transfer targets v Birmingham.
  • Everton match-winner Tim Cahill was sent off at The City of Manchester Stadium just seconds after wrecking David James' brave attempt at personal redemption.
  • Alan Shearer ensured that Graeme Souness will take over the Newcastle United hot-seat with three points to ease him into place after a 3 v 0 victory over his previous club Blackburn.
  • Aston Villa halted Chelsea's 100 per cent start to the new Barclays Premiership season as Jose Mourinho's side were held to a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

UEFA Champions League: Twenty-one in Chelsea squad for Paris

UEFA Champions League: Twenty-one in Chelsea squad for ParisJosé Mourinho has taken a squad of 21 players to Paris for the first UEFA Champions League matchday against Paris St Germain today.

The only players left at home from his squad of 24 are Carlo Cudicini and Arjen Robben who are still not fit, and Celestine Babayaro. Mourinho praised Babayaro’s performance at Aston Villa but regularly chooses full-backs not to travel as they rarely make the substitutes’ bench.

So his 21 are:

  • Petr Cech and Lenny Pidgeley;
  • Paulo Ferreira, Glen Johnson, Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry, William Gallas, Robert Huth and Wayne Bridge;
  • Tiago, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard, Alexeï Smertin, Gérémi and Scott Parker;
  • Mateja Kezman, Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Adrian Mutu and Damien Duff.

Mourinho hinted after Saturday’s draw at Aston Villa that Duff will be playing some part in tomorrow’s game. Duff, Bridge, Johnson and Huth didn't travel to Villa Park.

The team trained in the Parc des Princes on Monday evening having had a low-key but thorough session on Sunday at Harlington. The weather at Harlington was passable. In the Parc des Princes it was pouring with rain.

Aston Villa 0 Chelsea 0

Aston Villa 0 Chelsea 0Chelsea had the better of an excellent game at Villa Park once a Villa tactical surprise had been overcome, but the superiority wasn't converted into goals. However, a clear late penalty was not given when Didier Drogba was fouled.

Villa’s tactical surprise was to play with a midfield diamond: Barry on the right, McCann holding, Solano behind the forwards and Hitzlsperger on the left. It worked well and Villa exerted early pressure, manoeuvring the ball around and through Chelsea’s trio.

Eleven minutes from time Chelsea seemed to be robbed. Drogba sprinted up the left on to Smertin’s excellent pass, switched inside and had his heel clipped in the area by Ulises De La Cruz as he prepared to shoot. Referee Rob Styles didn't give the penalty but booked Drogba for diving.

It was a terrific game if not a terrific result.

Full EPL Review coming later after today's final weekend game.

Premiership Preview: Aston Villa v Chelsea

Premiership Preview: Aston Villa v ChelseaJose Mourinho's Chelsea travel to in-form Aston Villa in search of a fifth successive Premiership victory.

The Blues have already seen off Manchester United, Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Southampton, but have won few friends with their negative style. Mourinho does not care about criticism of his tactics as long as results are good and another strong defensive display is on the cards at Villa Park.

Chelsea are likely to have to be at their best at the back if they want to take all three points, as Villa have produced two excellent attacking performances at home this season, seeing off Southampton 2-0 and Newcastle United 4-2.

David O'Leary's side have though shown some defensive frailties in conceding six times in their opening four Premiership games and Mourinho will be hoping that he has a full compliment of forward players available to exploit those.

Damien Duff should be available after recovering from a calf problem, while the club's medical staff expect Didier Drogba to recover from the ankle injury he sustained during Ivory Coast's 5-0 victory over Sudan.

With the majority of his squad having been away on international duty this week and a trip to Paris St Germain in the Champions League coming up on Tuesday, predicting how Mourinho will shuffle his star-studded squad for this clash is near impossible.

Last season Villa beat the Blues 3-2 in the Premiership and 2-1 in the Carling Cup at Villa Park, but Chelsea are strong favourites to avenge those defeats this time around.

England back on track

England back on trackDeadly Jermain Defoe led England to a vital win in Poland with his first goal for his country. Sven’s decision to bring in Jermain Defoe proved to be an inspired one as the Tottenham man led England to victory with a fine individual goal on his first start for his country.

England’s attitude was spot-on tonight and even a Polish equaliser just after half time was not enough to stop the Three Lions collecting their first win on the journey to Germany.

England gave everything they had. The World Cup dream is now firmly back on track. Next up is Wales at Old Trafford. That should be a decent game.

Check out the full report of this game over at The FA's official website.

UEFA content with Chelsea and CSKA

UEFA content with Chelsea and CSKAChelsea’s Champions League games with CSKA Moscow will go ahead after UEFA confirmed that Roman Abramovich does not have a controlling interest in the Russian club.

Questions were raised after the group stage draw paired the clubs, based on a shirt sponsorship deal between CSKA and Sibneft, a company in which the Chelsea owner is one of many shareholders.

UEFA perform routine investigations on all clubs in the competition prior to its start and the governing body has verified that this procedure did not find a problem with Chelsea and CSKA.

UEFA also confirmed there are no laws limiting the amount an individual can sponsor another team.

The rules forbid an individual owning a major share of two clubs in the same tournament. Roman Abramovich has no equity stake or any direct financial interest in CSKA Moscow.

Breamster.com FIFA 2005 Hand-On Review

Game Stars LiveOur good friend Dan from Breamster.com has been lucky enough to attend Gamestars Live this week and over at his site he has a great review of his FIFA 2005 experiences at the show.

In summary:

"WOW! – This game has improved immensely with the introduction of the first touch. We all wanted improved gameplay and EA have finally answered us and delivered. I still feel improvements need to be made, but will need to play more games in order to pin point the exact elements.

The broadcast and graphics have again been tweaked making the realism go into another dimension.

I can safely say that the transition from FIFA 2002 to 2005 can now be seen. It’s taken 2 failed attempts but they are now moving in the right direction!"
