Bayern Munich is out

The Israeli side, Maccabi Haifa, have earned a remarkable UEFA Champions League victory over 1999’s champions Manchester United, with two exceptional long-range goals securing a famous 3-0 win, at the GSP stadium in Cyprus.

Champions League

It was Manchester United first Champions League defeat in more than a year which denied them a club record 17th unbeaten outing in the competition. They had not been beaten since October 17 2001 (when RC Deportivo La Coruna won at Old Trafford) and it was the first time they had not scored away from home in 8 months.

The first two goals would have graced any stage, the opener smashed home on 40 minutes by Yaniv Katan, who sidestepped John O’Shea before taking vicious aim. Katan was also the one who had scored the goal that gave Maccabi a shock lead in Manchester on Matchday One.

The second goal came from Haifa’s Lithuanian midfielder, Raimondas Zutautas, who strode forward and took aim with brutal power and precision, Ricardo left helpless as the left-foot shot ripped past him from fully 30 metres.

The third goal arrived 13 minutes from time from the penalty spot after Ricardo had brought down Zutautas. The goalkeeper was relieved to see the referee pulled out only the yellow card, but no mercy was shown by Nigeria international, Ayegbeni Yakubu, as he slotted the penalty home.

However there was a sour taste at the end for the Israeli champions, because even this success was not enough to prolong their stay in the competition, Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 victory over Olympiakos Piraeus (Juan, Schneider) meaning that second place in Group F is now beyond their grasp.

But the 2nd place and a continuo in the UEFA cup is almost promised, as Maccabi Haifa won Olympiakos 3-0 in the last game, and even if they lose (up to 2-0) next week, they’ll still get hold of the 3rd place.

In group G, another former CL champions, Bayern Munich have lost, the big difference is that this defeat eliminates Munich from the UEFA Champions League.

Munich is even out from the UEFA Cup (as 3rd place) after losing their crucial game against Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 in Spain.

Bayern simply had to win to maintain any hopes of progressing but Dutchman Roy Makaay was the man who put the final nail in the coffin of a disastrous campaign for Ottmar Hitzfeld's side with an 89th-minute winner. Victor had earlier given Deportivo a 54th-minute lead which Roque Santa Cruz temporarily cancelled out on 77 minutes. To add to the four-times European champions' despair, they are also now condemned to finish bottom of their group with only 1 point !

Be the 12th man with Fifa Football 2003 from EA Sports™

With the release of FIFA Football 2003 from EA SPORTS™ - the world’s leading interactive entertainment software company talk about the largest marketing campaign behind this year’s game.

Fifa-2003

Players sometimes talk about mystical influences on the game, influences that are out of their hands: a referee who allows the game to go with them, or makes it go against them, a crowd that leads them to an unforgettable comeback or even the presence in the crowd of a player who has been injured for six months. When players talk about that influence, they do so in hushed tones. They whisper of the presence of the 12th man. FIFA Football 2003 invites you to be the 12th man.

Al King, Director of Consumer Marketing, Europe, Electronic Arts Ltd said: “The game is targeted at 16-34 year old gamers [boo hoo - that excludes me then!] who own or play on the required hardware; the focus this year is on the hard core gamers as well as the more mainstream segments.

Star players Edgar Davids, Ryan Giggs and Roberto Carlos have made time in their busy schedules to form a “Football Council” leading the largest FIFA marketing campaign seen in Europe by staring in individual TV and print advertising investigating the 12th man phenomenon.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

The campaign consists of TV, print, outdoor, an internet micro-site, perimeter boards in football stadiums, etc. and will run across Europe. Kick-off will be on the 25th of October with the print campaign and the micro site www.fifa2003.ea.com, which comes in 7 languages. 3 TV spots will start to air on the 31st of October. The 3 spots each have 30sec and 20sec versions.

UK Campaign Highlights include:

  • Large scale UK TV Campaign
  • Pre-awareness, launch and post-launch - specialist, national & lifestyle print advertising
  • Nationwide billboard campaign
  • Huge in store FIFA presence at retail
  • Week long demo disc offer with The Sun
  • ITV Sport FIFA microsite
  • FIFA tournaments at Burton stores
  • Hoardings at key UEFA Cup and England Euro qualifier games
  • FIFA Football 2003 is released on October 25th 2002 for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and for PC-CD, the PlayStation®, the Xbox™ video game system from Microsoft Corporation, NINTENDO GAMECUBE™ on November 1st 2002 and GameBoy Advance™ on 15th November 2002.

Boca Vs. River

Police clashes, fans riots, teargas, fans groups fighting, all that not include an excellent derby match. Where did all took place? In the big derby of Buenos Aires off course.

Apertura

After the game, River supporters had been told by stadium announcers to wait 20 minutes while the visiting fans were cleared out first but, when the 20 minutes expired, the Boca end was still virtually full of supporters celebrating their team's win.

When River fans tried to force their way out, police fired teargas into the upper tier of their end, causing panic and leading to the hurling of objects by the supporters.

The clashes continued on the streets outside where police again used teargas to disperse the rampaging River fans.

Just a reminder: last week, River's match at Banfield was suspended in the second half when the club's supporters opened a hole in the fence around the pitch and threatened an invasion. Banfield were winning 5-0 at the time and the result stood.

And to the game itself: Boca, who won for the first time in five years at the ground of their most bitter rivals, went ahead when striker Delgado curled in a free kick three minutes before half time.

But River came back after the break when substitute Esteban Fuertes scored from close range after Victor Zapata had opened the Boca defence with a run to the byline.

Marcelo Delgado struck again with 15 minutes left, controlling the ball on his chest and scoring with a rifling half-volley from 30 yards.

The win took Boca second in the Apertura championship, ahead of River on goal difference, but the result favoured leaders Independiente, who opened up an eight-point lead with five matches to play.

In other games: Independiente stayed on course for the title with a 3-1 win over Rosario Central.

Montenegro scored twice after Andres Silvera, the championship's leading scorer, gave Independiente the lead with his 14th goal of the competition. Luciano Figueroa briefly put Rosario back on level terms early in the second half.

San Lorenzo's 10th match unbeaten run ended with a 2-1 defeat at Chacarita Juniors.

Racing Club continued their topsy-turvy season under former Argentina and Tottenham midfielder Osvaldo Ardiles by losing 1-0 at Estudiantes, who moved off the bottom of the table.

City's problems

Without a goal in three hundred and sixty minutes of Premiership football Manchester City’s manager, Kevin Keegan, is very aware that his players confidence could have taken something of a battering.

But he says that from all a win from a poor performance could change the season.

Manchester City

Here’s what Keegan had to say to the Manchester City Official site: "The players have to understand that you can play well and get beaten in this Division. We are the sort of team who probably need a poor performance and a result which would get us going."

"The next game will provide an opportunity. I think they are a group of players who need confidence. To play the way we play you need confidence and for seventy minutes against Chelsea we had plenty of it. The last twenty knocked it a bit so we will have to get hold of it again."

"It is my job to lift the players, that is what I am paid to do and what I enjoy doing. Games like the one against Chelsea only make me more resilient. You have to learn quickly in this Division."

"As a kid, when I was playing, I got some harsh lessons. You have to take those lessons on board and learn from them.", Keegan added.

The Venables revolution is turning into a revolt. Fans who hardly mourned O'Leary leaving suddenly want him back and Eirik Bakke has called for unity which is in short supply among the Elland Road faithful these days.

Football League set for £15m bail out?
Talks are ongoing between the Premier League and FA to give a handout to cash-strapped Football League sides. The figure could be anything up to £15m but most of that will go to Division One clubs.

Rejoice, it's the return of the LDV!
The competition nobody cares about until they're in the Final is back with a whimper. Still, other than playing Arsenal, what better opportunity than to give a 16-year-old a chance to get some first team experience?

Rivaldo back in business

All eyes were on Rivaldo as AC Milan passed over city rivals Inter on goal difference at the top of Serie A after cruising to a 4-1 victory against Atalanta on Sunday.

Serie A roundup

Rivaldo have opened the scoring in Bergamo, with a long shot from 20 meters into the left corner, and although Luigi Sala levelled the scores, Jon Dahl Tomasson restored Milan's lead and a double from Andrea Pirlo gave the scoreline an emphatic ring.

Parma have seemed to get back into form, have lost to Modena, which came from behind to beat Parma 2-1 in the late game. Visitors Parma went ahead just before half-time through Adrian Mutu, only for Andrea Fabbrini to level midway through the second period. Diomansy Kamara scored the winner eight minutes from time to inflict Parma's first Serie A defeat of the season.

Old-boy, Roberto Baggio, made an unhappy return to Bologna FC as his Brescia side were beaten 3-0 at the Renato Dall'Ara. Third-placed Bologna's Julio Ricardo Cruz scored two late goals to seal victory after Tomas Locatelli had put them on their way in the first half.

Another old-boy, Enrico Chiesa, came off the bench to score twice on his S.S. Lazio debut as the home side defeated struggling AC Perugia 3-0. Simone Inzaghi had put fourth-placed Lazio in front on the eleven-minute mark.

Torino picked up their first points of the season after Federico Magallanes' 18th-minute strike gave them a 1-0 victory against AC Chievo Verona while David Marcelo Pizarro's 51st-minute penalty handed Udinese a crucial three points against fellow strugglers Reggina Calcio.

Giuseppe Cardone, Piacenza’s defender, own goal handed struggling Como Calcio a share of the spoils. Cardone diverted the ball past team-mate Matteo Guardalben on the stroke of half-time to cancel out Nicola Caccia's 28th-minute opener.

Creation Centre update

Chris from Fifa Benelux met Matt Bilbey at the Dutch EA Party last week and got an update on the Creation Centre.

We can expect the Creation Centre within 2 weeks as it is out before the release of FIFA 2003! You will be able to create your own players and teams. BUT, editing the teams which are present in FIFA 2003 will not be possible until the game is released.

The good thing about the Creation Centre (in Chris' opinion) is the possibility to be able to create for example your own amateur team, complete with jersey’s flags and the names of your friends.

More news on the Creation Centre coming soon.

Canada Super-Patch 2003 is coming

With the recent release of the FIFA 2003 Demo giving us a first peek at the current file system, work has begun over at Fifa CONCACAF on the FIFA 2003 version of the popular Canada Super-Patch.

Screenshots from Canadian Super Patch 2003

In years past, this patch has been wholly dependant on the available leagues/teams that could be overwritten and has been severely restricted by the limitations of Hex Editing. This year, with the imminent release of the Creation Centre, patching looks to be more flexible than ever.

As such, they would like to open this patch up for input from Canadian fans. As this is by and large a fantasy patch, let your imagination go!

  • How many teams this year?
  • Which ones?
  • Do you still want to see a CUSL Second Division (CPSL)?
  • Keeping in mind that patches can be released in portions and installed together without conflict... what's the best way to go about this?

Have your say on this patch! Discuss it over in the Fifa CONCACAF Forum.

Becks a Cry Baby?

England’s captain, David Beckham, has been branded a “cry baby” for his antics during England's Euro 2004 qualifying win over Slovakia.

Beckham was guilty of a theatrical dive and a two-footed tackle on Slovak Martin Petras during the second half of England's hard-fought 2-1 win in Bratislava.

Beckham

Slovakia's Miroslav Karhan, infuriated by the skipper's antics, has accused Beckham of double standards, saying he was willing to dish out the rough stuff, but unable to take it himself.

The Slovak midfielder told The Sun newspaper: "I don't like it when a star player like Beckham whinges to the referee. He was doing it permanently.

"But at the same time he was going into tackles with his two feet first. The referee let him off and didn't even show him a card. He only warned him. But when you touch Beckham he immediately starts like a cry baby. I really can't stand that."

Geller wants Gazza

Can it be? In an all-fruitcake pairing, Exeter City joint chairman Uri Geller wants Paul Gascoigne to manage the club!

Gascoigne is among the names being linked with the vacancy at St James Park. John Cornforth was sacked following the 1-0 defeat by York which left them fourth bottom.

"I am a great admirer of Paul. He clearly is very talented, he has the skill, he is a great entertainer, a fantastic name and I will accept him with open arms. He would be a great psychological boost which can bring a lot of positive thinking and a positive aura to the club. If Paul takes himself very seriously and gets into shape, he is still a great football player."

That's not his aura, Uri. That's the steam off a kebab...

Wow - look what Soccer Access are achieving!

Take a visit to Soccer Access where Ariel is now performing his Fifa 2003 miracles.

Screenshots Click for larger image Click for larger image

The demo has only been out a few days and look what he has already discovered:

  • Free Camera Mode
With this you'll be able to see every part of the stadium from very angle. It's great, check it out: pics of the bench, the coach's face, the policemen, the crowds and even from below the ground. You can make zooms to the face of the players, referees, linemen and every person in the game. Take pics of the flags, banners and even the lights of the stadium.
  • Good and bad news for Fifa 2003 kits
He has made more improvements in editing FIFA Kits. But they have good and bad news. The great news is that they will be releasing some kits tomorrow like Manchester United, Barcelona, River Plate, Boca Juniors and more. The bad news is that the importing method is complicated. EA Sports has used a new method that makes it difficult to import kits to the game.
  • Fifa 2003 Faces
Now they present the faces format for FIFA 2003. Look at their screenshots, the bmp includes the face, hands, legs and arms, and incredibly the eyes colours for each player!
  • Demo Raptor
A great utility for your FIFA 2003 Demo! Select your camera, resolution, detail, minutes, difficulty, game speed and Demo Raptor will remeber them for your next game! Want to see the Replay Mode? Well select the "No Demo Mode" and enjoy the replays too!

This looks like just the start of what Ariel is going to bring to us for Fifa 2003. Visit Soccer Access now and regularly to keep up with all his latest unbelievable inventions.

Sven May Regret Snubbing Bowyer And Cole
Sven-Goran Eriksson has dropped midfielders Joe Cole and Lee Bowyer for the Euro 2004 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia - moves that will add to the press criticism he has been facing in recent weeks, believes Philip Cornwall.

Is Time Running Out For Roeder?
An early goal down, the Hammers looked like they had begun to turn the tide when Joe Cole equalised, but as has happened before this season, the second half performance was deserving of nothing more than defeat. Hammers stay bottom of the Premiership.

All Scousers Together...
"Each and every one of us in the city, however, share a common denominator: that we are mates with someone of the opposite persuasion - I probably know more Reds than people who vote Lib Dem or Tory" - says an Everton fan...

Popstar Befriends Chelsea Fans!
Chelsea supporters who travelled to Liverpool on Sunday's 10.08 from Paddington, were 'wowed' when Aimee Kearsley, one of the final ten girls in ITV's show "Popstars - The Rivals", joined their train...

A Grim(sby) Tale
"After Saturday's display against Reading, it is only natural that fans will be angry and disappointed. The club is facing the worst financial crisis in its history and unless a solution is found, it may not survive and the club could fold..."

Everton Season Review Video
It serves as a record of a season in which Everton truly plumbed the depths under Walter Smith, although fans are spared footage of the FA Cup debacle at Middlesbrough.

Sad Farewell For Coleman The Player
Cookie has had to call it a day 18 months after his awful car accident, despite looking as if he was going to make it back to the first team at one stage this year. The legendary defender will stay at Fulham in a coaching role.

Houllier Full Of Praise For Heskey
Gerard Houllier has praised Emile Heskey for the way he responded to his return to his centre forward berth. The England international scored twice and set up another for team-mate Salif Diao as Liverpool thrashed Spartak Moscow 5:0 at Anfield.

Davids Impressed By Toon
Edgar 'Specs Savers' Davids says: "Newcastle impressed me. They are a young team and they have not really been in the Champions League before, but they gave us problems."

Buy A Piece Of Wembley Turf
The old stadium is coming down, and with it comes the turf that has seen so many magic moments (we’re trying to resist the urge to do the ‘crowd is on the pitch…’ thing). But the turf is not just being thrown into an old skip - you can own a piece...

Chaddy The Owl Scoops Top Prize
The Fourth Annual British Mascots Grand National ended in controversy - but finally a result has been declared, Oldham's Chaddy the Owl being named winner at last.

Who's got the inside knowledge?

Taken from the latest Inside Games newsletter from EA they give a new slant on the features as the excitement mounts around Fifa Football 2003.

Fifa2003

We've focused on the fundamentals of football for the most immersive playing experience ever in FIFA FOOTBALL 2003™. We've created an all-new game engine. We've worked with Edgar Davids, Roberto Carlos and Ryan Giggs as our EA SPORTS™ Football council. We've applied the world's greatest players' finest moves. Get ready to drool.

NEW AI ENGINE > 3 KEY ENHANCEMENTS

  1. Team Play: Execute precision passing and quality finishing for total domination.
  2. Tactics: Face the onslaught as you cling on to a 1-0 lead in the last 10 minutes.
  3. Players: Express yourself using the individual strengths and skills of European football's top stars.

PLAY FOR REAL
Lifelike shooting, dribbling, and passing, coupled with deflections, missed headers and scrambled goals reflect the ebb and flow of football. The new set-piece dynamic gives control over the power and swerve of free kicks. Find the angle, the sweet spot and the top corner. Just like Roberto Carlos. Or not.

Compete in Club Championship Mode. The pressure is intense with real players, real stadia, real stats and crowd chants. Want to test your nerve in Galatasary's famous stadium of hell? Fine, just duck when taking corners.

AND FINALLY…
It wouldn't be FIFA without TV presentation with some of Europe's greatest commentary teams. What's more, highlights let you re-live the story of the match.

Fifa2003

Now I'm really starting to get excited!

Harte To Juve?
We've all heard the one about Juventus and Fray Bentos, but the Star are convinced that the Turin giants will offer £6m for out of favour Ian Harte in January.

Telfer: Mistreated Or Misfit?
The opinion on Paul Telfer amongst Saints fans is divided: some hate him intensely; some merely dislike him. But is this criticism justified?

Dyer Eyes Bellamy Place
Kieron Dyer believes the position he played last night against Juventus, supporting Alan Shearer, is the one he wants to play for club and country. Sure Craig Bellamy will have something to say about it, and Bobby Robson too...

Cadamarteri Appeal Turned Down
When Danny Cadamarteri was sent off against Burnley, the City support couldn't believe it. And neither could Nicky Law who quite rightly appealed against the "decision". But unfortunately the appeal has now been turned down.

Boost For Leicester
Micky Adams has been named Nationwide First Division Manager of the Month for September following a fantastic start to the season for City, despite their off-field problems.

EA Sports announces new "Football Council"

EA have announced that World-class players Edgar Davids, Ryan Giggs and Roberto Carlos lend their expertise to EA SPORTS’ FIFA Football 2003 to create the most authentic, immersive football experience.

Fifa2003

With the new football season well under way, EA SPORTS is pleased to announce that star players Edgar Davids, Ryan Giggs and Roberto Carlos have made time in their busy schedules to form a “Football Council” - a gathering of top-class players who have inspired the development of the forthcoming EA SPORTS FIFA Football 2003 videogame and provide a true football feel to an already beautiful game.

When EA SPORTS found out that Edgar Davids was a keen gamer, and a huge FIFA Football fan, they were only too pleased to sign him up as Director of Football. In return he has been happy to lend his expertise in refining the game and his contributions have been invaluable in making sure the videogame faithfully represents the real thing.

As Davids himself explains “I’ve been a huge fan of EA’s FIFA football series for years but was keen to assist the development team in providing an insight into the game from a players’ perspective. Ryan Giggs and Roberto Carlos are both great players and together I think we represent all the skills that football should be based on”. “The game looks incredible and now it truly feels like you are on the pitch – If it’s in the game, It’s in the game!”

Fifa2003

Rory Armes, Executive Producer of FIFA Football 2003 comments, “The EA SPORTS Football Council of Davids, Giggs and Carlos highlights our development focus on total football authenticity. They have inspired the gameplay through their skills and knowledge of the game, as well as their own expertise in particular areas - for instance Carlos’ free kicks, Giggs’ dribbling skills and Davids’ ball control.”

In addition, to advising on aspects of the game’s development, the three players will be leading the largest FIFA marketing campaign seen in Europe.

Jonathan Bunney, Director of Product Marketing, Europe at EA says, “As the world's leading games brand we are constantly pushing the boundaries of interactive sports entertainment - how we create it, how we market it, and the experience our consumers get from it. This year has been a watershed in the approach in all three areas, underpinned by the involvement of our three stars - and not only will we be presenting our most impactful marketing communications for the franchise, but the game will be the strongest football experience ever. “

Fifa2003

FIFA Football 2003 is due for release in November 2002 for PC-CD, PlayStation®, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox™ video game system, NINTENDO GAMECUBE™ and GameBoy Advance™

2 great new movies from our visit to EA Canada

"Cameraman" Chris over at Fifa Benelux has released 2 great movies of our day in the EA Canada studios. One is from the preview we received from Kerry Whalen of the final game and the second involves us testing out Fifa 2003 for the first time. (Rob, was this the 7v1 game??? ;oP)

FIFA 2003: A new beginning

Francisco Alberto Serrano Acosta visited EA Canada with us representing the Spanish online newspaper MeriStation. He was an excellent Fifa 2003 player and decimated me 5v1 in our tournament (with Real Madrid and Ronaldo!) and only lost 1v0 in extra time in the final to Matt Holme.

Click here for Francisco's Fifa2003 preview

He has written his in depth Spanish preview of Fifa 2003. A small snippet from it roughly translated reads:

"In the past year, FIFA has lost fans because of the competition, criticised for their arcade approach and lack of new features. MeriStation visited Vancouver to verify 'in situ', the real intentions of EA, to make reality an awaited change in its title, in this occasion, much more focused on the simulation…"

Check out the full preview, if you can read Spanish, and see lots of new screenshots from different versions of the game. Click here for full preview.

Is Ronaldo in the game?

This was the very important question we found the answer to in Canada but we all seem to have forgotten when previewing the game.

The answer is categorically "Yes". He is in the game named "Ronaldo" and appears in both the Real Madrid team and the Brazilian national team.

Great news for all Ronaldo fans as Fifa 2003 delivers more good news.

Fifa Benelux Fifa 2003 Preview is here

Chris and the guys over at Fifa Benelux have completed their Fifa 2003 review. Chris was a great guy during our time together in Canada and even I walked up Grouse Mountain's "Grouse Grind" with him and Steve Hildrew on a very hot afternoon. 1 hour 23 minutes later at the top we were discussing Fifa again.

If you don't understand the Dutch language I am sure you can interpret some of the great pictures they have there. Check the full review out by clicking here.

Games Domain Fifa 2003 Preview online

Following on from our busiest day ever here at the MRA site, today we can bring you the Games Domain preview from Steve Hildrew who travelled with us to EA Canada. In Steve's words:

"Games Domain, along with representatives of fansites for the FIFA franchise, has spent the last three days visiting the enormous Electronic Arts facility in the sunny west-Canadian city of Vancouver. What we've seen has put the sparkle back in our eyes where the FIFA franchise is concerned, and finally given some hope for a decent level of competition in the videogame soccer market. It may not be perfect, but we'll be damned if it isn't finally football again."
