FTL v Danish League Friendly Match Up

Visit the FIFA Togga LeagueThe guys over at the FTL are in the process of arranging a Friendly International Match Up with their Danish counterparts who have been running their own league format of FIFA since 1997 and are well established as they have 4 divisions.

It's a great opportunity for both leagues to see how they are progressing as well as experiencing other countries gameplay and culture which can only be a bonus for playing the FIFA experience.

FTL themselves have only been going since April 2003 and are really just finding their feet in the FIFA world but they are mad keen for this match up and it should be a very interesting one to see how they all get on.

The format will be 3 teams of 5 in a squad. With 3 captains nominated for each of the teams....basically the 1st team will be the strongest going down to the 3rd team. Therefore everyone in the FTL gets the opportunity to be involved in this match up and not just the stronger players.

There will be 5 single match up games playing for 3pts or 1pt for a draw. Then there will be two (2v2) match up games picked by the captains from the 5 man squad. So a maximum of 21 pts too reach.

Keep an eye here and over at the home of the FTL to see how the guys get on.

San Siro Pitch Scandalous - Totti

Visit Roma mini site Francesco Totti joined the chorus of criticism towards the San Siro pitch after his side's 0-0 draw with Inter last night.

Roma had the better opportunities in a dull match, but Inter had the majority of the play.

"It's a shame we missed those chances," Totti complained after the match. "But we don't give up for the scudetto, also because Milan and Juve face each other in the next round. The pitch was scandalous, the draw is fair if we consider Vieri's big chance in the last minutes. But in a general view of the match, we deserved more."

At the top for a day

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea manager Claudio Ranieri was impressively relaxed after his multinational superstars took top spot in the Premiership with a 1-0 win over Manchester City, saying that leading the table was not vital - yet.

"It's not important to be top now, but it's important to continue the way we're going," he said after the narrow victory at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea lead Arsenal purely by virtue of having scored more goals, and Ranieri said he would be wishing for the best when the Gunners take on Charlton on Sunday. (Arsenal drew 1v1 to go back to the top of the table).

What was most important for the Italian was that his side built from Roman Abramovich's millions had bounced back from their loss to Arsenal last week, preceded by a draw.

"We wanted three points because we got only one point from our last two games. It was important to come back with a victory," he said, while noting that the team played better in coming back to defeat Lazio in Wednesday's stirring Champions League tie. I'm pleased with our performance. We didn't play as well as we did against Lazio - but it was a good result."

"It's not easy to recharge your batteries after the Champions League, so I changed some players."

Chelsea's victory was somewhat tough on Kevin Keegan's City, who started the day in fifth place and kept the Blues under constant pressure. The difference between the teams ended up being only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's slightly bizarre goal in the 33rd minute.

David Seaman palmed away Adrian Mutu's cross but it hit a stumbling Hasselbaink and rebounded into an empty net for the Dutchman's ninth strike of the season.

Keegan rounded on critics who blamed the 40-year-old Seaman - who has been plagued by a series of costly errors so far this season - of making another blunder. Asked if the veteran goalkeeper could have done better, Keegan snapped: "It looks like you want to give David more criticism - but I'm not going to help you. He's been terrific for us and was very, very good in goal today. It was poor defending by David Sommeil to let Mutu get to the byline, and his cross just hit Hasselbaink."

Serie A Preview: Inter v AS Roma

Visit Roma mini siteBACKGROUND

It would be wrong to use Inter Milan's string of embarrassing draws and humiliating losses as a guide to how they will compete against Fabio Capello's Roma on Sunday night at the San Siro Stadium.

But these failures to obtain maximum points over the last few weeks are so significant that they will surely have dented the pride of each and every member of new coach Alberto Zaccheroni's side.

And if they fail to acquit themselves with dignity against their central Italian visitors - be it with three points for the win or one point for the draw - they will bare the brunt of their moody and demanding fans.

Inter's biggest problem in achieving either of these objectives is the visiting side.

Roma have never heard of the home ground advantage and will have every intention of returning to the capital with three points.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Roma: Brazilian midfielder Mancini said this week that his side were not going to get carried away by Inter's problems on and off the field. "The potential they have is enormous," he told reporters. "We are going to be in for a very difficult game."

His team mate, Emerson, sees the encounter in the same light. "It will be hard fought because they want to forget this dark period," he said.

That is not to say that the visitors do not have their own problems. After a dream game against Parma, they head to the San Siro Stadium without Chivu and Panucci, both out with ankle injuries.

Inter: Earlier this week, Zaccheroni fielded questions from reporters about his plans for Inter. And amidst the hullabaloo of this press conference, he revealed that he would be dropping the 4-4-2 formation used by ex-coach, Hector Cuper. After two years, he said, it was time the side adopted a third attacker. Victory, he seemed to be saying, would be more likely using this arrangement.

Whether that is true or not, he would certainly have tried the 3-4-3 formation out at training on Thursday afternoon when he got his squad to play a short practice game.

Zaccheroni then did some private work with the defenders while the rest of the coaching staff took the midfielders and the forwards for crossing and shot practice.

Kallon was absent from this session because his positive test to a prohibited substance was made public the day before. He is alleged to have used nandrolone.

Through his lawyer, Claudio Vigorelli, he said that he was trying to work out what could have produced such a result "...from a drink to a shampoo".

Someone short on sympathy for the African was the president of the Italian Football Federation, Sergio Campana. He said that every player who tests positive to a banned substance expresses surprise as to how it could have happened.

PROBABLE LINE UPS

Roma:

  • Pelizzoli
  • Dellas
  • Samuel
  • Zebina
  • Mancini
  • De Rossi
  • Emerson
  • Lima
  • Totti
  • Montella
  • Cassano

Inter:

  • Toldo
  • Cordoba
  • Materazzi
  • Cannavaro
  • J.Zanetti
  • C. Zanetti
  • Almeyda
  • Coco
  • Recoba
  • Vieri
  • Kily Gonzalez
PLAYERS TO WATCH

Roma: Montella is a terrific talent, a footballer who looks like an American soapie star and plays like a Brazilian on the beach. His game is a heady mix of intuition and intelligence. And having him in the side, in place of the injured Delvecchio, could be manna from heaven for the visitors.

Inter: Recoba, the bucktoothed Uruguayan with an appetite for goals, is worth watching. He is as exciting as he is unpredictable. An attacker capable of scoring with power or touch.

Are You Watching Arsenal - Chelsea 2 Lazio 1

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea came back from behind at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to beat Lazio and progress to the top of Group G. In a hard fought game, Chelsea deserved to taste the sweet scent of victory.

In a scintillating first half, Chelsea showed their Italian visitors just how well they could play. Unfortunately, Lazio managed to find the inevitable chink in the Chelsea defensive armour to sneak a goal they didn't really deserve. Indeed, during the half it wasn't abnormal to see Chelsea string together pass after pass probing away at the Italian defence.

If the first half had ended on a slightly disappointing note then the second half was a monumental affair. Both managers stuck with their starting elevens and the half started at a less frenetic pace then the first. Chelsea seemed a little more cautious whilst Lazio seemed content to time waste and hold onto the 1-0 lead. Chelsea continued to probe and were quite content to catch Lazio offside as the defence held the line superbly.

With the game approaching the hour mark Chelsea reaped the reward their display deserved. A good move involving Veron, Mutu and Gudjohnsen saw the ball fed to Lampard. The best midfield player in the Premiership let fly, right footed, from twenty yards to send the ball spiraling into the top right hand corner. The ground erupted as Lampard rightly took the plaudits for a wonderful strike. However, more was to come.

A little more than seven minutes later Mutu had a shot blocked but collected the rebound to send his shot into the bottom corner for a 2-1 lead. Stamford Bridge went ballistic and chants of "Are you watching Arsenal" Pierced the night air. Lazio moved through the gears desperate to retrieve the situation. Carlo produced two fantastic saves to thwart the Italian side, poetic justice some might say, and the game moved into stoppage time. Despite a fracas near the corner flag Chelsea safely negotiated the three minutes to win and top the group.

Emerson Confident Of New Deal

Visit Roma mini site Roma's midfield engine Emerson has struck a blow to his many suitors by maintaining that his future is Giallorossi.

The Brazilian all-rounder has been tipped for a summer departure from the Olimpico with mega-rich Chelsea the most mentioned possible destination.

"I have real confidence that the powers that be at Roma will resolve some minor issues surrounding my contract, which runs until 2005," he trumpeted.

"My heart only beats for Roma and I am sure we will meet our objectives if we continue to play as we are now. "

In related news, Fabio Capello has urged the media and fans to not place too much expectation on the young shoulders of Under-21 star Daniele De Rossi, who produced a virtuoso performance duing the 2-0 win against Parma last weekend.

"He needs to be left in peace," said the seasoned Roma coach. "There is still a lot that he needs to learn and he needs to do that in serenity.

"Thankfully that seems to be happening. He is a player that works hard and is ready to make the necessary sacrifices."

Chelsea hopes boosted by Couto absence

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea's hopes of pulling off a much-needed Champions League victory at home to Lazio on Wednesday have been boosted by the absence of defender Fernando Couto from the Italian side.

Couto has been ruled out of the Group G clash at Stamford Bridge after suffering a head injury. The Italian club confirmed that the 34-year-old, who was taken to hospital after suffering the knock in Lazio's 1-0 defeat at AC Milan on Sunday, had been ruled out.

Lazio are top of Group G with four points from their opening two matches, while Chelsea, third in the English Premiership after their defeat at Arsenal on Saturday, are tied on three points with Turkish side Besiktas.

Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri meanwhile is likely to keep faith with goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini although it was his mistake which allowed Thierry Henry to score Arsenal's late winner. Cudicini's failure to gather a simple low cross presented Thierry Henry with the goal just a quarter of an hour from the end of the top-of-the-table clash.

Ranieri said on Chelsea's website: "I said to Carlo don't worry, you saved a lot of times good chances from Chelsea's opponents. I have been in football a long time. A lot of good goalkeepers make mistakes. It is normal. Sometimes it can happen."

Chelsea will have to watch out for Lazio's strength going forward. Coach Roberto Mancini has helped former Valencia striker Claudio Lopez regain top form and has been a key person behind Bernardo Corradi's transformation from being surplus to requirements at Inter Milan to becoming an Italy international.

Roberto Muzzi and Simone Inzaghi complete an impressive strikers' squad which will surely be a real test for Cudicini and the defence in front of him.

Mancini's signing of AC Milan's veteran midfielder Demetrio Albertini has also been a master stroke. Far from giving indications his best times are behind him during his Milan glory days during the 90s, Albertini has become a real leader on the pitch and is one of the first names Mancini writes on the team sheet.

The Danger Man isn't the one with the ball. He's the one without it. That is EA Sports BIG push in their marketing campaigns. With only a few days to go check out their latest marketing campaign below.

Create Brilliance with Off the Ball control

Off the Ball™ control
You get the ball on the halfway line. You want to pass but everyone is marked. No problem. Simply pick out a player, run him into space and play the ball through. He turns and takes the ball forward as you make other players jostle for position in the box.

Groundbreaking gameplay
As the striker makes progress down the wing, the new animation engine dramatically enhances the smoothness of his movements. His swerves and turns are incredibly fluid adding to the realism of the game.

Immersive environments
The capacity crowd bursts into chant which fills the stadium as the striker flicks the ball across and you make contact on the volley. You know it's in the net even before the keeper dives. With only 4 minutes to go, the game is won.

Go check out EA's www.24thoctober.co.uk site which brings you some great new FIFA 2004 media downloads for Del Piero, Ronaldinho and Henry while we wait for the weekend.

Sensi Denies He's Quitting Roma: If I Want, I Could Buy Half Of Italy

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma president Franco Sensi has denied that he's quitting the cash-strapped Serie A outfit, and taken a swipe at his critics.

"I heard a week of rumours," he said. "I'm here to build a great Roma, always stronger. Someone's having fun by giving false figures, only talking about the debts and forgetting the credits. If I want, I can purchase half of Italy."

FTL 2 v 2 Tournament gets underway

FIFA Togga LeagueThe guys over at the Fifa Togga League have kicked off their exciting International 2 v 2 Tournament and what a cracker the first Match turned out to be.

Using the new idea of hosting matches over the in game Network option via Kali the opening game of the Tournament came from Group B between France and Title Favourites Brazil. This first match was a surprising 2-2 Draw.

The French then lost 3-0 to the quietly fancied England and were beginning to look in deep water. However a 3-0 victory by Brazil over England secured the Brazilian Team top spot in the early stages on 4pts with England sitting nicely in 2nd place with 3pts.

Argentina are yet to play their first game and will know by looking at the games played already that they have their work cut out for them.

We will bring you more news on this exciting 2 v 2 Tournament as and when it becomes available.

Roma Inflict Parma's First Defeat

Visit Roma mini site Parma suffered their first defeat of the season when losing 2-0 to AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Walter Samuel put the Giallorossi ahead in the 27th minute, and Antonio Cassano doubled the lead on the hour.

Fabio Capello praised his team's effort following the 2-0 defeat the Giallorossi inflicted on Parma on Sunday afternoon.

"We played great football against a team that impressed me. They have great solidity and deserve the place in the standings that they currently hold," he said.

The Roma general then expressed kind words for Hector Cuper, who was sacked by Inter earlier today.

"He has all of my support. Unfortunately coach's jobs depend on the results they achieve," he said.

No ceiling on Chelsea cash for Rooney bid

Visit Chelsea mini siteI've been away for a few days on a family holiday and what a few days it has been for us Chelsea fans. Tuesday we go top of the Premiership, during the week we are linked with a massive transfer for Wayne Rooney and yesterday we lose a great match to Arsenal (poor old Carlo). Check out the Rooney story below.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has not placed any ceiling on the club's spending and could be ready to smash the British transfer record to lure Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge, a senior club official revealed.

Asked whether Rooney could become a target, interim Chief Exec Smith replied: "He might be but he is one of several players we will be looking at, but there is no specific attention on him."

Chelsea have spent 111 million pounds on new players since Russian oil tycoon Abramovich bought the club in July. But Smith said that huge outlay did not mean the funds for Rooney would not be available.

"I don't think there is a particular ceiling on what to spend on an individual player. We are looking to strengthen the team for the sporting targets we have. It is a question of calibre and if they fit in the team rather than a price tag."

Smith did however play down the prospect of a dramatic move for Rooney during the January transfer window. "The last game of the Champions League group stage is on December 9 and we will wait until that event to see where we are," Smith said. "Hopefully we will qualify and we will look to see on that basis but we don't expect too much transfer activity in January. We are likely to pay attention to the summer. With Euro 2004 it is a much better window."

Rooney, who only a year ago was a trainee earning a basic wage of 80 pounds/week, is under contract with Everton until June 2006 and is expected to be awarded a new enhanced deal shortly. The player himself has given no indication of any desire to leave Everton, or the city of Liverpool, where he was born and brought up within walking distance of Everton's Goodison Park ground.

But Everton know that, unless they can provide Rooney with at least the hope of Champions League football, they could soon find themselves struggling to hold on to the hottest property in English football.

Serie A Preview: AS Roma v Parma

Visit Roma mini site BACKGROUND
AS Roma host Parma at the Stadio Olimpico in one of the weekend's most appetizing fixtures.

The Giallorossi progressed through to the second round of the Uefa Cup this week when completing the formalities against Vardar. 4-0 up from the first-leg, they drew Wednesday's match 1-1, with impressive young prospect Mancini getting his name on the score-sheet.

Roma sit third in the league having taken three wins and two draws from their first five games. Fabio Capello's men have often been impressive, and the way in which they dominated Juventus in the second-half of the recent 2-2 draw suggests that this Giallorossi side have arrived to play hardball this season.

Parma have also made a positive start and share third place alongside their opponents. Adriano is the man everyone is talking about, although in midweek two of the sides younger players took the spotlight. Marco Marchionni set up Alberto Gilardino twice and scored the other as the Gialloblu beat Metalurg 3-0 to book their place in the next round of the Uefa Cup.

Cesare Prandelli will send his side out with a note of caution at the Olimpico. Affording the likes of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano too much space will almost certainly spell defeat. So Matteo Ferrari and Co will need to be on their metal. Lazio have already been beaten by Parma at the Olimpico, and if Prandelli's men can stem the Giallorossi tide, whose to say they can't repeat the trick here?

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Roma: Capello has injury worries over Vincenzo Montella, John Carew, Christian Panucci, Luigi Sartor, Damiano Tommasi and Vincent Candela, while Marco Delvecchio is out for a further three weeks. Francesco Totti, though, returns and could partner Antonio Cassano in attack

Parma: Domenico Morefeo and Mark Bresciano should return to the starting line-up for this match. Manuele Blasi is now officially suspended following his failed drug test. Marco Donadel should partner Simone Barone in the midfield engine room.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Roma:
  • Pelizzoli
  • Zebina
  • Samuel
  • Chivu
  • Mancini
  • De Rossi
  • Emerson
  • Dacourt
  • Lima
  • Totti
  • Cassano

    Parma:
  • Frey
  • Bonera
  • Ferrari
  • Castellini
  • Junior
  • Barone
  • Donadel
  • Marchionni
  • Morfeo
  • Bresciano
  • Adriano

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Francesco Totti (Roma): the Italian international has started the season well and will be fit and raring to go after an injury-enforced rest.

Adriano (Parma): the Brazilian has been linked with Roma in the past, but has made it clear that he'd like to play for one of the Milan clubs once his stint at Parma comes to an end.

PREDICTION: Parma will always have that surprise element away from home this season with so much bright attacking talent. They recently put three past Lazio at the Olimpico, but Roma have a sturdier defence than their neighbours and should eek out a 2-1 win here.

Trap and Capello To Trade Places?

Visit Roma mini siteReports coming out of Rome suggest Giovanni Trapattoni might take over the Giallorossi's reigns at the end of the European Championships.

Trapattoni's wife is from Rome, his daughter lives there, and in the past Trap revealed he would like to coach Roma one day.

On his part Fabio Capello would take over the Nazionale, a desire he has already expressed in various interviews.

But this deal won't happen if Italy win in Portugal, as this would assure Trapattoni the lead of the Azzurri in their quest to win the 2006 World Cup.

UEFA Cup Report: Draw Sees Roma Through

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma advanced to the second round of the 2003/2004 UEFA Cup thanks to the 1-1 draw they achieved at Skopje on Wednesday afternoon.

The return leg was expected to be a mere formality for the Giallorossi following the 4-0 thrashing they inflicted to the Macedonian side two weeks ago.

In the end it really was, even though the Romans fell behind in the scorecard late in the first half through Zaharievski's long range effort that found the back of the net courtesy of an error by young Roma keeper Zotti.

Before the game's first goal, Antonio Cassano, who was practically holding the entire Roma offense on his shoulders due to the absences of Carew, Montella, Delvecchio, and Totti, failed to give Roma the lead in two chances in which he had the goal at his mercy.

The Italian club's equalizer finally arrived midway through the second half when Amantino Mancini connected with an Emerson through pass, dribbled past the keeper, and lobbed the ball into the goal at the far post.

This magical strike was the Brazilian's first official goal with the yellow and red club.

Roma did not stop attacking even if they found the equalizer, but it was Vardar who came closest to taking the lead again as Braga hit the crossbar with an outside blast.

    UEFA Cup Preview: Vardar-AS Roma

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma face Vardar Skopje on Wednesday evening in a match that shouldn't pose too many UEFA Cup second round qualification threats to the Giallorossi.

The Serie A side were able to practically seal off their second round presence thanks to the 4-0 win they registered in the first leg.

In that match Roma dominated their Macedonian opponents, scoring two goals on each side of the break and handing ninety minutes of enjoyment to the Olimpico crowd through a spectacular style of play.

Capello's side arrived in the Balkans without many of its top stars. Especially on offense the Roma boss will have to do without most of his star choices.

Skipper Francesco Totti stayed in Rome after catching a flu, while Montella and Carew are nursing minor ailments they hope will disappear in time for them to face Parma on Sunday afternoon.

Marco Delvecchio's situation is more critical than his team-mate's as he will probably miss a month of action due to the thigh strain he suffered while training with La Nazionale.

This lack of alternatives will hand Gaetano D'Agostino a chance to prove himself in an offensive partnership with wonder boy Antonio Cassano.

On their part Vardar will attempt to grab a result that they hope will allow them to partially cancel the humiliating scoreline they suffered in the first leg.

Thanks to the support of their warm fans and the many absences in Roma's starting eleven, this does not look to be an impossible feat to achieve.

    England

    Sükrü Saraçoglu Stadium, Istanbul

England have qualified for Euro 2004 after drawing 0-0 away to Turkey in a dramatic, tense match in Istanbul.

They defended very well and were good going forward on the counter attack. Beckham was unlucky with a penalty when his standing foot slipped out just as he struck the ball and it rose almost vertically into the Turkish fans.

Throughout the game though England were never outclassed and Sol Campbell and John Terry at the heart of the defence were awesome.

"It's a very unlucky moment for me and not what Roma needed, especially after Panucci also injured himself earlier this week," he added.

Chivu Not Worried By Siena Flop

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma defender Cristian Chivu believes his team can aim for the Scudetto despite the draw achieved at Siena brought Capello's gang back to earth.

"It is from the start of the season that we believe we can win it. We started well but this is just the beginning. I did not get really excited after our first victories and I'm not worried now," he said.

"It would be nice to hand a great satisfaction to all our fans. We are trying to do this," he added.

Chivu also reflected on the three man defense Capello is adopting this season.

"It allows me to participate in the plays more, and I like this," said the former Ajax star.

Eleven games, nine wins, happy manager

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri defiantly made seven changes from the side which started against Besiktas – maintaining his rotation policy – and saw Chelsea collect a ninth win in 11 outings this season at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

We showed a fantastic first-half but not so good in the second,” said the manager. “They scored immediately after ten seconds in the second and they deserved a draw. The match was open, they had two chances but also Chelsea had two great chances to win the match, and then at the end we won."

Boro manager Steve McLaren found it hard to live with the result. “We gave our two best performances - Leeds and today - and we’ve lost both games. I can’t fault the performance or the attitude. We paid the price, for while being on top and creating chances, not getting the goal, and not concentrating in the last minute."

I couldn’t see Chelsea scoring in the second-half, only from our mistakes. Thats what happens when you play a quality team, they’ve got players who can turn a game. And that’s what they did.

Chelsea fielded an astonishingly young defence: 19 year olds Johnson and Huth, 22 year olds Terry and Bridge.

He stressed that the current Chelsea record still hides a young ambition. “Look, we aren’t a team. I know all the people say Arsenal, Manchester are close to us. No! We aren’t like them because we make mistakes. We make mistakes but we have a lot of strength inside, a lot of spirit and we want to show that. Of course if we show too much spirit, we don’t show enough patience to play better, but slowly, slowly the balance will be good.

Claudio faces injuries for first time

Visit Chelsea mini siteWilliam Gallas and Celestine Babayaro who were injured on Wednesday against Besiktas are both absent at Middlesbrough today. So is Emmanuel Petit who missed Wednesday also. Marcel Desailly is a doubt and a late assessment on him will be made today.

Gallas, Babayaro and Petit are all receiving treatment and have had scans but will need further investigation before a time on their absences is assessed. It is hoped that none are serious injuries.

Despite winning eight of our first ten games, the first defeat has brought new pressure. Jimmy recognises that and is not fazed.

If you don’t compete then you are really doing something wrong. At this moment in time we having the least losing of points but it’s still a long, long way to go. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon and it’s going to be nice, it’s going to exciting. I definitely think Chelsea with this squad have to up there. You can’t end second and 15 points behind the first. You have to at least challenge them properly and I think that’s what you have to do.

Asked how many teams can win the Premiership, he replied: “I think three. I don’t want to tell you who but I think three.

No prizes given for guessing the right trio!

Lima Working Hard To Transform Boos Into Cheers

Visit Roma mini siteAS Roma midfielder Francisco Lima is one of the most pleasant surprises of the opening stages of the Giallorossi's 2003/2004 campaign.

The Roma fans had booed Lima in more than one occasion last season, but this year the boos have transformed themselves into cheers.

"I am trying to regain the fans' trust. I try to give it all I have. It is hard for me to be a perfect passer, but the important thing is to work hard for the jersey one wears. This is what I do," he said

"It is fundamental to have Capello's admiration. He helps who works hard. I am not irreplaceable. Now Candela is injured and they know how strong he is. All I try to do is work in order to be ready when I'm called to duty," the Brazlian added.

During the summer Lima was involved in a late-night car accident that got many to think he had his mind set on partying rather than Roma.

"What happens outside the gates of Trigoria have nothing to do with my work," stressed the Brazilian.

    Chelsea's riches embarrassed by Turks

Visit Chelsea mini siteChelsea crashed to their first defeat of the Roman Abramovich era as Turkish champions Besiktas resurrected their own Champions League campaign with a shock 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

After a nine-match unbeaten run since the Russian oil tycoon began injecting his millions into west London, Chelsea's attempts to graft 100 million pounds of new talent on to an established squad finally came unstuck at the hands of Sergen Yalcin, whose two goals secured an unlikely victory for the Turks.

"When you make mistakes, you pay," Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri said. "After 2-0 we tried to do something but they closed the space very well."

Chelsea's embarrassment of riches was underlined at the start of the match by the sight of Damien Duff squeezing on to the bench alongside two England internationals, Joe Cole and Wayne Bridge, and last season's first choice strikers, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

By the time half an hour had elapsed however, Chelsea were contemplating an evening dominated by a more regular form of embarrassment with poor defending helping to gift the visitors two goals from their first two forays up field.

Chelsea had the chances to preserve their unbeaten record but, as in the opening period of the match, their finishing let them down with Veron and Lampard, who failed to connect with a volley from the edge of the six-yard box, again the most notable culprits.

    Roma Want Cavenaghi

Visit Roma mini site Roma are currently very active on the transfer market. In fact it seems that the Edgar Davids deal is practically sealed; the Dutch player will be a free agent at the end of the season and will then sign a 3 year contract with the Giallorossi.

    Group respect for Besiktas

Visit Chelsea mini siteClaudio Ranieri, Frank Lampard and Marcel Desailly prepared for our home Champions League fixture against Besiktas, by speaking to the gathered media at our Harlington training ground on Tuesday afternoon and all three were in good spirits.

Claudio reported a clean bill of health following the 1-0 victory against Aston Villa on Saturday, with only Emmanuel Petit carrying a slight injury.

He said: “We have no injuries, everyone is available. Just Manu has a little, little problem but the other players are all available. Manu had a little hit to his knee but John Terry is okay.

He was keen to stress that despite Besiktas losing their opening Champions League fixture against Lazio, they are not a side that should be underestimated or dismissed.

"I know Besiktas is a very good team, I watched them last Sunday in Istanbul they won 5-0 and they played very well. They touch and move the ball very well but their personality, their philosophy are of champions."

Marcel Desailly, a previous winner of the competition with Marseille and AC Milan, was also keen not to let the enthusiasm of others and the impending tie against Lazio, overshadow the importance of tomorrow’s fixture.

Following his start on the bench in Prague a lot of headlines appeared the following morning about Frank Lampard’s agony at not being selected. This was the first opportunity the midfielder had to put the record straight.

"I think a big deal was made of that,” he said. “When I was asked about it I said I was disappointed not to play but it’s understandable, the manager wouldn't want me not to be disappointed. There was no great reaction because of that, I understand the situation this season. I won’t lie when I played the next couple of games I really wanted to be on my game to show what I can do. I want to play in big Champions League games as well as League games. People say I was hurt but it was bit blown over the top I think."

"I think every game is a special game at the moment, every game with Chelsea has got a lot of focus on it from the media, from everyone watching and I take every game as something that’s a good thing just to be involved."

Good luck guys and 3 more points please.
